Most HD TV's have at least one DVI, VGA (or HDMI) port, and, if not, there are adapters for S-video or even, God forbid, composite video.

Well, we did have that "Post Your Penis Next To a Yardstick" thread, but it was deleted for some reason, so we're stuck with this sort of stuff.

so i want to know your secret of how you keep your bass down and not knocking over all your Chihulys :p ;)Well, the tall Chihuly is glued down, as are the Blomdahls on stands and the Littleton. The other works are pretty stable... but I don't crank up my bass too high to begin with. Living in a condo means you have to respect your neighbors and you can't make their ceilings vibrate too much. :)

The wiring was installed professionally, as was the rack for the AV equipment. All the rest of that is me.

Do you have any pics of how this was all setup? Maybe of the build process? More specs on the PC as well? Thanks.. it's a beautiful setup. I'd like to show the wife this and sometime in the near future have something like what you've setup. The accessories complete the setup, almost like an old movie house.. In all honesty, the build process was fairly simplistic. The ceilings are Drop Ceilings (It is a basement in case that wasn't obvious) and so wire running was fairly easy. I planned out what I wanted in terms of technology, and then planned out in terms of that. I decided I wanted to max out the inputs for my projector so I ran a 25ft DVI cable, component cable, composite cable, and s-video cable, just in case. 25 ft worked well and I ran it across the ceiling and down the wall to the stand under the TV. The Speakers were wired the same way, and then run through the ceiling and down the wall. The screen is held up with several very strong lag bolts. I got a $20 mount from eBay made for my projector and simply mounted it in place. I got my mom to decorate it and pick out all the accessories etc, because that really isn't my thing, I'm more of a technology and get-your-hands-dirty-guy ;). The mural on the wall is actually like 12 strips of wallpaper that my mom put up. I don't know how she does it, because I can't see the seams and everyone that sees it seems to think that it was painted.

The PC has some very modest specs, and because it is a PC, I don't use it that often, but it's nice if i have something on my main machine and want to stream it down there, it has the following specs:

1.7Ghz Athlon XP Mobile
Large Copper Heatsink so it says cool and quiet
Dual Layer DVD Burner
512MB RAM
Radeon 9600
80GB Hard drive
Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005

And xp media runs just fine on it, you really don't need a lot of grunt. Then again, I'm not using the box as a DVR, and I'd recommend something a bit faster (2.2Ghz+) if you wanted to handle more then just one Low-def recording.

I hope this answers a few questions, but if there is anything I left out feel free to ask, I'd love to help out with your future theater.

Do I sense the beginnings of an American class system?

By George! Not really... it's just that the proportion of hicks is just as high in Georgia (if not higher) as in North Carolina. Having a Georgian imply that people from North Carolina can't have well-furnished condos is kinda like the pot callin' the kettle black. ;)

I just got around to snapping a couple of pics. I pride my rig on being the absolute cheapest I could assemble it. I work at Circuit City, so my whole rig is comprised of customer return/open box stuff...all for awesome deals. My 50" Sammy DLP was $1999 new, I got it for $1199. Matching stand was $100. Harmon Kardon 7.1 Speaker system and stand? $50, because we somehow lost it during inventory, so I took it off their hands. Denon AVR-587 receiver was $80 for me. My most proud deal is my Sony BDPS1 BD-player. This thing was $1000 when it first came out, and was recently $499. My cost? $50!! A little smooth talking my managers always has worked out. Anyways, for being a little rig in my apartment, it's not too bad.

Here's my setup, I got it a couple months ago and finally decided to take some pictures of it with my brand new Nikon D40 camera. I still don't know what I'm doing with it though :p

Equipment:

Samsung 42" plasma TV
TiVo HD upgraded to 500GB
Apple TV (hacked)
Xbox 360 Elite
Panasonic class D digital receiver
Some great little Yamaha satellite speakers -- they sound fantastic for such little things, and have real wood cabinets
12" Velodyne sub that the neighbors hate

The TV stand is two Ikea LACK units that I basically bolted together so I got twice the height and twice the shelf space. Works quite well. I then added some LED lights under the shelves, and all the lights in the room are tied in via X10 controllers so when I click "Watch a movie" on my Logitech Harmony 550 remote the lights dim :)

Yup! I'm surprised though...based on your first series of photos I would have thought the intensity of the lights on the stand would have been even more with the lights off. They looked rather bright to begin with when the light were on!

I had my camera ISO sensitivity pretty high I think. They're just the right brightness; it's perfect to have those on during a movie with all the other lights off. They provide just enough ambient light across the floor so you can see where you're walking if you have to get up.

Your idea is great -- I'm stealing it ;). I'm gonna pick up a pair of Lacks this weekend. Out of curiosity, how did you bolt the two pieces together -- or are they glued?

Your idea is great -- I'm stealing it ;). I'm gonna pick up a pair of Lacks this weekend. Out of curiosity, how did you bolt the two pieces together -- or are they glued?

Basically, I drilled a few extra holes on each side of the bottom of the middle shelf (which is really the bottom shelf of the second unit). The goal is to attach the middle shelf to the first set of side supports in the same way as the top shelf attaches to its side supports. You want to drill your holes on the underside of the middle shelf to mirror the holes on the underside of the top shelf, since it is attaching to the side supports in the same way. These holes aren't present in the middle shelf to begin with because, since it's really the bottom of the second unit, the only thing normally attaching to its underside is the four legs.

This makes the whole thing fit together beautifully, because you're able to use the standard screw-locks it comes with to put it all together as if it was designed that way in the first place. I used no glue -- only what came in the two boxes -- and the thing is as solid as a rock.

Once you start assembling them it will become quite obvious. The only place you need to drill is on each end of the underside of the middle shelf. At the end of the project you'll wind up with an extra top shelf and four extra legs. Since the Lack units are only $70, this looked a lot better to me than any other $140 TV stand I was considering. It's very solid and substantial looking yet sleek at the same time.

Here's my only caution to people considering this setup: the space between the shelves is not high enough to accommodate most receivers. I had a fairly standard-sized old Panasonic receiver, and after I had built this TV stand and wired everything up I went to slide the receiver in and it was 0.25" too tall! Fortunately, I was going to buy a new receiver anyway so I purchased this more compact class D receiver (http://www.amazon.com/Panasonic-SA-XR55S-Theater-Receiver-Silver/dp/B0009E1YPW/ref=pd_bbs_sr_2?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1202393045&sr=8-2) and it fits fine, as you can see in the pictures. Sounds great too. But most receivers are a little too tall to fit.

Good luck!

This is something else that survived the recent break in, thank goodness. It is a 46" Samsung sitting on a poorly engineered entertainment stand from Target. The damn thing only has one hole for cables, one hole in the middle, thats it. I changed that with frustration and a screw driver... :p

Oh and if your wondering why the 360 is on the ground. It tends to heat up and freeze while sitting in the entertainment system.

My cabinet (see above your post) is also from Target, and when the doors were closed things would get quite warm as well. While watching a movie using the PS3, I heard the fans on the PS3 kick in even with the doors closed and the movie at an above normal listening level. The Apple TV is also known to be a good heat source. I bought 4 120mm PC fans from coolerguys.com and mounted one in each of the 4 compartments in the cabinet to bring in fresh air. Components are still warm to the touch, but I can watch a movie without the fans revving up to turbo mode on the PS3.
I can post more pics if you like.

yeah, it came from the same company as the fans. It actually puts out 12V and 5V through a regular Molex connector. I actually switched a wire and have my fans running on 5V. Now they run silent 24/7, and still put enough fresh air in to prevent overheating. I think I spent around $75 for everything, more than I had planned on - but I have over $1500 worth of electronics in that cabinet, so I figured it was a good investment.

OK, here are the pics. I bought screens to put on the back to cover the blades in case the cat climbed behind the cabinet. They do affect air flow quite a bit, moreso than I thought they would anyway. Let me know if you are interested more about the setup - I can give more detailed information about the parts.

It was nice checking out all the setups. I'm in the process of designing our media room. We have our relatives living with us so they are taking up the extra room, but once they are out we are turning it into a media room. I've been doing a mockup in Google sketchup, and these have been giving me a good idea. Were going to have a flat screen wall mounted with speakers on the side and surround sound. We may do the LACK x 2 on top of each other like a previous poster did or demo a built in desk we have and have a little stacked media cabinet. In they're we'll have a receiver, dvd player, cd changer, xbox, apple tv. Then with the apple tv I'll probably just start a big movie collection. Can you hookup an external to the :apple:TV or is it just the internal HDD? If not i'll just keep them on one of our macs and stream them.

When they came out they had a list price of ~£200 (which equates to about £250 these days). I picked them up second hand for £31 :) They sound pretty damned good with a decent amp, wires & banana plugs. Not as good as B&W DM601 (which are a lot more expensive & will probably be my next upgrade path), but a helluva lot better than the Sony SS-MB250H I had before. They're rated at 20-100W & that's plenty loud enough for a mid-to-large room; here in my small dorm room they're too loud & if I played them at full whack I would end up with hearing damage! If you're looking for a decent pair of standmounts at a sensible price, they're ace!

Plus none of that gear comes close to 'audiophile' grade. Just because it's big & shiny doesn't mean it sounds good.

Watch it, don't hate on the equipment. It's not crap either.

Infinity speakers are by no means not good, for the money I'd say they are hard to beat. My KLH towers are somewhat meh but my sub and my receiver are really good. (BIC Acoustech H-100 Sub & Pioneer Elite VSX-54TX)

So, I just moved back to Chicago from Florida, and of course the first priority was a new TV. :) So, here's what I ended up getting.

Panasonic Viera (TH-50PZ80U) 50"
Panasonic PT960 Home Theater (the rear speakers are wireless...quite convenient)

The TV stand is by a company called Init...tempered glass shelves, and really sturdy!
Also pictured are the Wii and PS3, of course.

I will mount the TV at some point...I just haven't had time (or friends around) to get it done since I got back.

Thanks! Nice setup, hope you like the apple tv as much as I do!

It was about a year's worth of vision all wrapped up into one basement design. I did alot myself and everything I couldn't do I had my builder do. He rocks for being patient with me, we did alot of non-traditional things where I had to draw/re-draw out 10x times for his crew. :)

Thanks! And yes... I too am in love with my AppleTV. It's the solution I've been dreaming of for about 8 years now... In my opinion, Apple hit a home run with this one. It's just the perfect solution for my household.

I can completely relate to your 'year's worth of ideas' point... I am going through the same exact same thing with my desk (check my signature). One thing I've learned along the way is that anything worth building is worth taking the time and building right. Your basement looks like you've put a lot of thought and love into it. I am glad that you've got it finished, and hope you and your family get a lot of enjoyment out of it.

Well, technically its a home theatre, except for the 5.1+ channel thing (which will be available by mid 2009)

Equipment:

Sharp AQUOS 32" HDTV
Klipsch Reference 52's floorstanding loudspeakers.
NAD C315BEE amplifier.
60GB PlayStation 3.
AirPort Express for streaming music.

Watching movies and playing some games on HD without the complete multichannel audio is still effin awesome, and when I add the subwoofer (in October) it will be even better, and with my 160GB tv coming in a month or so this setup just keeps getting better :p. BTW I'm 16.

New sub arrived today from eBay. Mission M2Sas, 8" poly/alu driver, 100W amplifier. Should play nicely with my Mission 732 standmounts. I can't test it out until I buy some more speaker wire (luckily there's a hifi shop just across the road from where I work so I can pop out at lunch tomorrow). Once I've checked that it's in full working order, I'm unfortunately boxing it up again until September when I move into the new flat. My room in the current flat is far too small to set up my speakers properly (my standmounts are currently on the floor) & the walls are far too thin to use a subwoofer.

Thanks for the compliments, I ended up putting the entire basement design in 1 year after we built the house. We waited since it was a new house build and wanted the house to "settle" for a year before putting drywall in the basement.

Thanks for the compliments -- yeah, the TV is angled a bit. When I first set everything up, we had it flat against the wall but you couldn't see it too well from the far end of the couch. With the TV angled, you can get a good view from anywhere in the room. :)

I control my PS3 with a harmony remote, just buy the Nyko IR remote for the PS3 from Best Buy (it's like $15). It comes with an IR usb device that plugs directly into the PS3, the Harmony software even has a preset for the Nyko PS3 remote built-in.

Also, the PS3 is about as ugly as a console can get. :(

The amount of preplanning required to have hidden all those cables would be a lot of work given how much longer I plan on staying there( i leave in Nov). You can see most of the wires because most aren't long enough to make 'L shapes' (run along the ground, then straight up). Once i find my new residence and more time (This setup was more of a spur of the moment over a week type thing, I had a vision and acted fast :) ) to plan how everything will be, I'll take wiring into consideration so it can be macrumors worthy :D

Logitech hasn't came out with a remote that includes support for the PS3 as it uses Bluetooth and not IR. I've been holding out for a new remote for that exact reason.

Uhm they have a blutooth one from ps that works good and is nice since it goes with the system

Here is my bedroom, which is where I do most of my media watching.

Sony Trinition 30" 30HS420
Yamaha RX-V650
XBOX 360 + HD-DVD Drive
PlayStation 3
budget speakers that I spent about $225 for all five.

Some pictures, taken with my super wide Sigma 10-20mm @ 10mm.

"Uhm" the Sony Bluetooth remote is not a universal remote, that was the whole point of the discussion. I too will never buy a PS3 to be my Blu-Ray player (unless someone comes up with a 100% IR solution, including power on/off) because Sony was too cheap to include a $0.10 IR receiver in the system. I've got my Harmony remote that controls everthing, even my Apple TV and 360, and I worked hard to get it that way, and I'm not going to add a second remote just for Sony.

The reason I have all this in my room is because when it was in the Family Room, I never got to use it, since my brother was always hogging the TV.
And what is wrong with my bedsheets?! Most of my friends think they are cute and awesome.

Yah.... and I must say, Metal Gear Solid + HDTV + Fancy sound = holy effin *****.! Seriously, when you get pretty much addicted and stare in deep concentration into the screen, have the speakers way up loud and a stupid thing jumps behind you (in the game OFC) and makes a rumbling sound, you'll poop your pants; one of the Boss's in the game [Laughing Octopus] does that haha (I jumped "out of my seat" hahah)

As for the 720p versus 1080p fight; meh, I get 720p and it looks as good (in 32inch) as my cousin's 6 month newer Toshiba HDTV. For movies, games, still pics and others, I guess the panel resolution won't matter that much under 47", but if you're gonna use it as a computer display then the higher res the better (but then again you'll find better displays @ higher res for less dough, smaller though, for computers)

How do you like the 705? I am deciding between the 606, 705, or waiting for the 706. thanks in advance for any advice.

I love the 705. I also have a 573 in my office--I really like the Onkyo gear. Now is a great time to pick up a 705, since they're on closeout (seemed like I got mine at a closeout-type price).

As pictured, I don't have enough space above the 705--it gets extremely hot, hot enough that the fans come on--if I play music at extremely loud volumes for say > 30 minutes. I can't hear the fans over the music, but it worries me.

My front speakers are bi-amped, which the 705 supports in 5.1 mode. It does get louder quicker with the bi-amping, saved me from buying a separate amp.

The Audyssey calibration sounds pretty good to me--some folks don't like it, but it's a far better starting point that I would be able to manually do. The OSD controls are pretty good, though basic in terms of the look. Very functional.

It works great with my Harmony 880, though in my office I just use the Onkyo remote. The 705 remote keys don't feel as 'solid' somehow as the 573 remote.

Anyway, all in all I'm very happy with both my 573 and my 705.

There is a pretty active 705 user forum on avsforum.com.

Good luck.

Well, there has been some changes over this few months. Wall mounted the TV, changed the TV, changed the music source (from iPod to AirPort streaming) rearranged the whole setup, now there's no stupid bookshelf right next to one of the speakers, and there's more overall space for them.

I would seriously recommend wall mounting the TV, the mount costs like $100~ (and there are cheaper ones, non-tilting) and it takes a couple of hours to mount the stuff, truly worth it. And I know, the TV looks as if it was way to high, actually it isn't, its within the range of the speakers imaging (if this makes any sense) so there's no odd imaging and when watching movies the sound appears to come from the screen, not from the big speakers. Anyhow here are some pics:

Also, does this sound good for cables? They're the ones available at the store where I bought the Klipsches (thats what they use in all of their speakers, KEF, Jamo etc included)

"Jamo AG-cables (Audio Grade) ensure optimal connections between speakers and amplifiers. The cables are made of 99.9 % OFC copper, and the insulation is transparent. Available in the following thickness: 0.75 mm2, 1.50 mm2 and 2.50 mm2"

Any thoughts?
