You know...I actually laughed out loud at this one. I felt worse about the PS3 (because there was such a great PS3 shortage, people were desperate, etc), but the Wii one...when he throws the Wii on the floor, the only thing that comes off is the *removable* side panel. The first two sledgehammer hits do little more than dent it!

This is not funny. This is terminally pathetic.
They claimed in the vid & site - they did it because wanted to see the look on peoples faces.
Here's an idea for those schmucks.. Take the wii and video record yourself giving it to some worthwhile orphans or child who is dying of terminal cancer and see the look of joy on their faces. That would be a worthwhile cause and a video worth seeing and somthing positive to come out of your video.
This was just a video to show the worst excesses of human behaviour and should not be condoned - it should be pitied.
 idiots.

All in all its stupid, but you gotta give the guys credit for ALWAYS coming up with a 360, wii, or ps3. The short guy always has the funniest smirk on, and I thought it was funny when that one guy was like "I was next to guy allll night, and let me tell you HE IS CRAZY", referring to the guy who picked up the wii and threw it down.
BTW, you gotta love the home made mario-luigi costumes :p

It makes me want to smash a Wii. With a sledge.
Preferably in front of crying children.

I agree that it's retarded and stupid.
Still, the laugh I got out of it is due to the Wii's durability, not anything funny the site creators did.

And it's not like that dude was missing with the sledge.

Completely agree, a bunch of losers - and I'm not even a 'gamer' so to speak.
I like how the guys behind this think that it bother the 'fanboys' of the device they are breaking to bits. I couldn't care less for what they break - I just think it is a disgrace. Smashing up anything that costs money is plain dumb. The people who donate to the cause are the real losers though.

you know, these guys got a lot of publicity out of doing this and probably made a bunch of money, so i doubt they would say it was a waste....besides, after all the ridiculous obsession and hype (they're cool, but people are way overkill on it) its hilarious to see someone wait all that time in line, pay all that money, turn around and smash it to bits. I wish they'd caught people's reactions.

I would say the PS3 seemed to hold up better, I was very surprised how solid it was. It seemed to just dent the more it was hit, not near the degree of thrashing the Wii finally got in the end...
Edit: And let's not forget Sony lost $300 when they bought the PS3, but Nintendo *made* money when they bought the Wii.

Seriously. Smashing a Wii? That's nothing. They're cheap and there's loads of them. Smashing a nunchuck controller might have got a stronger reaction :D
Durability looks very good. Nintendo making another tough console? Excellent. This shall go around the world with me after all.

I don't understand what I've done? Smashing the PS3 or an expensive system in extremely limited stock makes for a bit of entertainment. But seriously, if I was in a little queue buying a Wii, some guy came out and broke one infront of me I'd probably think for a second then look at the queue which was 1 person shorter. If I was him I would have given the Wii to my local hospital, perhaps even buy an extra 3 controllers. I don't think I'm the only person in the world who would rather make children happy than immature people laugh.

Well, considering that the PS3 is larger than the freakin' ORIGINAL XBOX, it'll understandably take a few blows. The Wii on the other hand is barely larger than the head of the hammer.
But we all know the Wii is made of Adamantium.

Smashmy....... is an act of total selfishness. To 'get off' on the look of disabelief on people faces is pathetic, especially when those people are merely thinking 'idiots'..
To say it is done to combat the concept of hype and captilism is bull too, if you want to combat the hype. Dont buy it, period. How has this achieved anything remotly productive ? A store and nintendo continues to make profit from the sale, someone who wanted a console has to miss out, some needy cause (childrens home/shelter) continues without a generous donation, but at least a few utter morons got a laugh.
How wonderful the world is.

I don't see why anyone would bother getting 'ticked off' about something like this, surely that just makes your time wasted as much as theirs.
Fair Enough if daddy was buying it for some spoilt brat and he was smashing it, but its paid for by the people, people donate on the site, which I think is the best bit. I personally loved the PS3 one, but only because there was such a shortage and he did it in front of a line of people. Who would have the balls? Not me...
At the end of the day, his money is just as good as yours and mine, after hes bought the console or whatever, what does it matter to you people what he does with it? If people want to sell it on eBay, so what? If this guy happens to want to smash his, who are you to tell him not to?

i think it's a pretty damn good idea. the point is obviously to get a rise out of people and based on some of the reactions here, it's obviously effective. but i think another important point they are making is showing people just how ridiculous it is to be so wrapped up and attached to material possessions. people sleeping in parking lots by choice to get an expensive gadget, some certainly missing work or time with their families or 5 million other better things they could be doing with their time. and to see the thing smashed to bits just shows how meaningless it really is, just a plastic box of parts. some of those people looked like they were on the verge of tears, which is most ridiculous part of it all and worth a serious social studies project. it's just a toy.

But how have they achieved that ? By themselves queuing up for days ? By them giving the store and Nintendo a profit ? If they wanted to achieve a reaction and video tape it - they could have achieved so much more with NO wasteful destruction.
Alternative Video Doc...
Here's a scenario for a video documentary that achieves better result.
You continue to queue, video tape the build up and the excitment. Capturing the rapture and hype of people queuing with you, and how self obsessed they are with a 'toy'.
Once the doors open and they get into the store, walk up to the counter. Just as the cashier reaches out to take your money - you snatch it back and give it to someone who is there on behalf of a good cause. (you have arranged that they meet you there on that morning).
You then video tape peoples reactions behind you as they look in disbelief that you queued up with them all night/day, befriended them and just as money was about to exchange hands you gave it away to a infinly better cause.
The store gets no money. Nintendo gets no money and it would leave people you queued up with all night with somthing more socially aware to think about.
Release that video onto the web... The same overall objective, completed and with far far better results all round.
Smashmywii achieved NOTHING but lining the hands of the store / nintendo and pleasing a few idiots who 'get off' on destoying things.

I understand what you're saying but why does everything have to revolve around money? I think that might be the point of this video. Money and material possessions are not the answer to everything, they're pretty darn meaningless in fact. There are thousands of ways to help people for free every single day. And more importantly, helping people without making sure everyone can see you doing your good deed. Real charity happens in silence. I don't think this video has anything to do with that and the idea of "he could give the money or the Wii to a poor kid" mistakingly got mixed up in this. I think this is more of a fun poke at consumerism than rubbing anything in the face of the less fortunate. People in true poverty have no use for video games.

Didn't political correctness go out of fashion a couple of years ago? I mean, come on, the guys raised the money, clearly stating the purpose, and then did it. It's their right to do so, and it's everyones right to donate the cash needed. If you don't think it's funny, then don't laugh.
All the ones talking about giving the cash to the poor, I assume that you never spend money on something unnessecary instead of giving it away? I mean like a stereo, a new mac or whatnot. If someone has the money to do something they think is worth doing then who are you to gripe about it?
Even though I didn't find the video that funny, seeing people here griping about how it's childish, stupid or how the money should be used for a good cause is really hilarious, so in that sence the guys gave me good amusement. Thank you, I might donate for the next smashing ;)

Yes we all buy 'wants' and not necessarily 'needs'.
But as for giving to charity. I give approx 10% of my annual income to charity every year, and no - I'm not 'well off'.
I just believe supporting local community and charities pay off for all of us in the end. Whether it's for the local arts council or for the local cancer hospice, or the village parish and old folk commitee. I have no problem offering my time or money when it is needed.
I firmly believe we reap what we sow in this world.

Yes, and the guys smashing that wii may donate as well, that we don't know. Personally I don't donate alot, but over here (in Sweden) we basicly have mandatory charity since all in all something like 65% of our income goes to different taxes (+ 25% vat) supporting a social security system that basicly makes sure everyone has healthcare and that no one is really poor. I would probably donate if I lived in a less taxed country as well, so I fully agree with giving.
What I am saying though that it can't really be used as an argument against the smashers, not unless you never ever do something unnessecary with your money instead of donating it. The guys giving cash to them spent their money on something they thought was worth it, and that is to me everyones right. Not letting people do what they want with their money and belongings borderline on communism.

They can do what they want with it, still doesnt make what they did with it any the less asinine.
And yes taxes here in Ireland are fairly big too + (we have 21% vat here)

LOL! I said it was a waste in that thread ;) I also said I dont think that was a real ps3 in that toaster conversion. Plus thread title was 'oh no, someone did it' which isnt exactly 'approval'.
I do have a shed load of electronics, much like many people here, but I dont buy them in order to get off on 1upmanship, over other people and to then destroy them out of some vague concept of anti-consumerism and then "get off" on the shock of people.
