MacOS X spell corrector

Am I the only one that notices one of the biggest problems with MacOS X is the horrible spell corrector built into cocoa applications? It doesn't give 1/10th of the accuracy as Microsofts spell corrector in windows when trying to correct misspelled words and it wont underline misspelled words if you paste a block of text into a document and such. This, scrolling speed/smoothness, and window resizing are the most annoying problems in MacOS X for me.

I don't understand what you are trying to say. All of the words in the dictionary are spelled correctly, both Mac and PC. How can the Mac version have an accuracy of 10% the PC version??

You mean into something like Appleworks?

Apple is going to have a major upgrade for "Appleworks". (Basically, the current Appleworks is really a variation of the old Clarisworks, as it was called.) Apple has code-named the program "Document", but very few details are available about the app. It will, more than likely, have an automatic spell check. Be patient.

I'm with you, man - Microsoft Word's spellchecker is much better. Another problem I have with it is the fact that I regularly write in English, French, and Icelandic, and I don't like that I have to switch languages for the entire system and then log out to spellcheck in a new language.

It is pretty bad. You can essentially replace the dictionary and the suggestion lists with cocoAspell available at http://www-ciir.cs.umass.edu/~leouski/cocoaspell/.

This helps with the words and with the suggestions, both of which are extremely lacking in Apple's implementation. However, it doesn't help with the various bugs in the check spelling as you type feature.

I would highly recommend installing it. In fact I see no reason not to, as it is free :).

You can change the dictionary language without loging out, just right-click and choose Speling -> Speling... and then Dictionary there you can set what language to check.

I like a it lot. Just for checking my posts in Safari before I submit them in these forums. It cuts down on stupd carless errrors. :)

The flag doesn't let you change languages, it lets you change keyboard layouts. But I'm happy for the tip from Jays - I never noticed that before, and it's gonna save me lots of time. Thanks!
