It seems like it should be enough for you, but I'm not sure about Macromedia Studio 8. Either way, upgrade to 1GB of RAM.
Another thing is the combo drive. You can't burn DVD's with it. For the extra $200 or so, I'd go with the 'middle' white model. You get 1GB RAM standard, I think they hard drive may be updated, and you get a dual-layer 6x superdrive. For $200, it's definitly worth it.

I wont want that much Space for a Laptop. The standard 60GB is fine and If I want to Burn DVDs I would transfer them over the Network to my PC to Burn it with Nero.
Oh, well then yes, that MacBook should be more than you need. Have fun with your Mac.
Hah, I'm kinda jealous. I'm waiting until MWSF to get my iMac once I have xmas money (and help from parents :D).

Hello,
After making an agreement with my mum and dad to get me a MacBook for Xmas as long as I do a few things between now and then, I have been looking at MacBooks around the web and was wondering if the Standard 1.83Ghz White MacBook with 512MB RAM would be good enough for the Beginner Mac User.
I wan't to run GarageBand and a load of other iLife Stuff, surf the web (through AirPort) and run Macromedia Studio 8 (Not at the same time.)
If you want to run GarageBand I would recommend getting at least 1GB of RAM.

Also, I don't know if you know this, but it sounds like you're at the age to be at school, so look into education discounts. I think that the 'middle' one is the best for you as well.

Off topic, but I don't want to start a new thread for this quick question.
Anyone know what you have to be to get the education discount? Is it just college?
I'll be starting high school next year; can I get one from that?

You can just pretend.., but it says you have to be over 18 or a teacher.

Okay. :D
If my cousin is in college though, can I get it through him? It wouldn't be hard to do that, and I'd feel better if what I was doing was.. well authorized. :p

Well im at Upper School, Yr. 9 So I dont Qualify. My Mum is a teacher though but wouldn't that mean that she'd have to buy through the school?
No, I think you go on Apple's site or to a store and just say that you're qualified. You probably need ID though; I'm not sure as I've never done it before.

Your mom just needs to take her Faculty I.D. with her when you go to the store. Hopefully with her discount you just might be able to swing getting the
2.0 GHz model with 1 GB RAM and superdrive.
It's going to have much better re-sale value when it's time for you to upgrade.

^^But he'd be better off with the 1.83 Ghz model and 2GB of RAM now that he is saving money and so technically has more money to spend.
If you can't, then get an extra 1 GB stick of RAM from a 3rd party vendor like OWC. Get a 1GB stick, and you should have a total of 1.25 GB of RAM in your MB, which is good enough.

Have the store explain the difference between the two models to your mom
addressing the pros and cons and let her decide then gladly accept her decision.

0.17Ghz won't make the difference
ram will
that's why I went with the basic model with 2GB when I got mine
rosetta slows things down, i forgot if macromedia has gone universal yet...
flash likes ram, rosetta likes ram, maybe later if you want to use photoshop... that one loves ram too ;-)
more ram makes it easier to keep several programs open at the same time, work with bigger files and not slowing it down, so at least get 1GB, and ask them to put one 1GB stick in instead of 2x 512 so later when you think you need more, you can put more in without throwing away the ram that's allready installed...

Thanks! everyone for the help :)
We will buy online and I will go for 3rd party Ram as it is alot cheaper.
If I opened the case up and installed some non-Apple ram would it void the Warranty?
I heard that as long as you dont touch anything that Apple put in there then your OK?
Installing your own RAM is easy, you just have to be careful not to damage the RAM slots inserting the new DIMM.
You just need to make sure that is has properly seated and MUST be careful
to follow anti-static procedures.

Hi Preston, what can we help you with?
What model(s) are you considering and what is your expected use for the machine you want to buy?

0.17Ghz won't make the difference
.
The meagre increase in clock speed is not the reason to go for the 2GHz version of the macbook. The 2GHz and up C2D macbooks have 4MB of cache which can make up to 10% difference in performance (DivX) http://anandtech.com/cpuchipsets/showdoc.aspx?i=2795&p=4.
The superdrive is a handy addition too. The C2D 1.83 macbook is no longer the bargain the CD version once was.

Go to either Datamem.com or macsales.com and follow the easy links for MacBooks. Both places ship international.
The thing is that Apple has reduced the prices of their RAM down to almost reasonable, so many current buyers have been opting to buy their RAM
included in their purchase.
Saving money is much more difficult for our freinds overseas because of shipping costs, VAT, etc.
You can practically re-build your own machine from the tutorials at ifixit.com

Does anyone have a Link to a good place to buy RAM from for a MacBook (link to actuall RAM for MacBook Please?)
I can install RAM and have built PCs before so I know all the Precautions I should take, the only thing I won't know is where the Cover for the RAM is on it :P
Aren't you in the UK? If you're mum is a teacher you are allowed to get educational discount too.
Macbooks use PC-2 5300 RAM 667Mhz 200 pin SODIMM RAM.
To buy: Crucial (http://www.crucial.com/uk/store/listparts.aspx?model=MacBook+1%2E83GHz+Intel+Core+2+Duo+%2813%2Dinch+White%29)
PC World (http://www.pcworld.co.uk/martprd/store/pcw_page.jsp?BV_SessionID=@@@@0197121917.1164396566@@@@&BV_EngineID=ccgdaddjhgikeflcflgceggdhhmdgml.0&page=Product&sku=939040&calling_page=Product)
There may be better places so shop around.
