Apple 'Singing' Ads Posted [Archive]

Y105sucks.com (http://www.y105sucks.com) and Apple.com (http://www.apple.com/music/ads/) posted Apple's new iTunes Music Store commercials that aired during the Media Event.

Regular readers will remember the Casting Call (http://www.macrumors.com/pages/2003/04/20030412131444.shtml) posted April 12th that sought out people of all ages were "are not afraid to sing their favorite song with lots of energy. No need to be good singers. No shy people allowed."

The commercials were shot between April 18 and 22nd.

The ads, which were shown today during Steve Jobs' speech, show various people singing popular songs from artists such as Pink, Sir Mix a Lot, and Enimem.

Oh my god! The one with the guy Nick singing Baby Got Back is to die for. That's the funniest thing I've seen in a long time.

They should put that on TV in the UK even though we can't use the service just for the comedy value.

These commercials are painfully embarrassing to watch. One, for the sake of the people featured in them. Two, to know I'm a huge supporter of the company that makes commercials this lame.

The "Baby Got Back" guy isn't that funny. If he weren't smiling the whole time he was doing the rap, acknowleding that he himself found what he was doing to be hilarious, maybe it would have more potential to be at least somewhat funny. (I'm not in a bad mood today, I just know a lot of people are going to be praising these poor commercials.)

I agree that these ads are excellent. I hope to see them in heavy rotation soon.

BTW-- Am I the only one who thinks the kid swears during the Eminem song? How's that going to look during a commerical break of an all new "My Wife and Kids?"

y105sucks.com is back up...sorta...apparently I have limited MYSQL usage with POWWEB hosting and I hit it. I put up an html page with the links to the ads. Download to your hearts content. Also if you want higher quality or the whole thing, I recorded it off the sat to SVHS so i could get that for you if desired.

Sorry guys, these commercials are boring as hell. I watched a couple, but ended up fast-forwarding most of them. I could see maybe one of these as a decent ad, but to have that many as a whole campaign is just going to get real annoying real fast.
I was looking at some of the old apple commercials (http://www.windowssucks.org/commercials.php is a good source), and there used to be some hilarious spots. Switch was okay, it definitely had its moments and if nothing else it really made its point. These new commercials are just dull.

I think the ads are quite good (not surprisingly the girls are quite talented) except for the kid singing the eminem, i must be the only one (apart from steve) who thinks that was just put in there to amuse the crowd. No offense to the little guy but its pretty bad.

must say that these are the worst apple ads ever, i think the eminem one was just bad taste. i get the idea behind them, but really, they are just sad. bad marketing if you ask me. at least the dell guy was just one guy you could hate. fire whoever thought of this one.

Wow, I'm surprised to see so much hatred towards these ads. I figured I'd see a couple, but not this much.

My favorite is Nava. Beautiful. I also like the old chubby guy.

These ads just plain suck.....I mean they're funny at first, but wait til we're all watching them for the zillionth time.

I mean look at the new iPod.....it's beautiful. So is the interface for iTunes....

I SO wish they would just STOP THESE SUPPOSED TO BE 'COOL' COMMERCIALS...

Yeah, I'm sure commercials showing off the iPod's operating system and industrial hardware design would be really cool.

Not.

It would only be cool to geeks like us, who already know about the iPod's elegance anyway. Commercials like that would just make iPod owners look like geeks themselves, which believe it or not is undesirable to many.

I disagree, poly...er.....

The iPod is a beautiful piece of design.

Many companies advertise their products with little more than slow mo views of said products - car companies for example.

Manyy consumers buy their products because of little more than liking the design

I think the iPod is inherently attractive enough to generate sales based on:
(a) its looks as described
(b) its specs - tell the audience how many CDs it holds!

I agree about the OS to an extent.....but it is amazing how many potential switchers are wowed the first time they see the dock or genie effect. Remember, what is eye candy for people like us who hang out on these sites may be enough to tip the balance for people who just want a good looking surf/WP.

I guess one response might be that it is the download service which is being advertised, but I stand by what I've just said, all the same.

There's nothing special about these commercials at all. Goofy white guys rapping isn't funny after its been done 100 times. Apple should be ashamed.

Meh, anyway, the ads are so-so. I agree that techy "THE IPOD CAN HOLD UP TO 20GB OF MP3 OR ACC SO BUY ITT!!" would be crap. They're aiming these iPod things at people, not geeks.

I'd buy one, but they're so expensive! (Aussie btw)

These ads are horrible! What is being sold? My favorite songs 99 cents? What's the service? How does it work? Why is it better than alternatives? No answers no point! Apple needs to get practical. All PC users I talked to hated the switch ads, and I really hate these ads. Give us a phone number, some info, something. Pointless. If Apple had an ad that showed of the iPod, the Operating System, and why they are better, people would get it. These ads don't tell me anything but that young white kids suck at rapping. Embarassing.

I called Apple about not being able to buy any Sir Mix-A-Lot albums, the representative I talked to was stupified. He said that they were adding new songs daily but couldn't understand why Apple would have an ad with someone listening to Baby Got Back and yet noone can buy it. :rolleyes: Kinda dumb.

That's why it says AppleMusic.com at the end. The point of the ads is to grab your attention. If you're interested in the 99c/song, then you go to the link. If 99c/song doesn't interest you, then no amount of phone numbers, or descriptions or pics of the operating system are going to get you to use the service.

Whomever actually got paid to come up with this cr@p is a very smart individual. Whomever decided to keep using this tired style is not a very smart, or original, individual.

Anyone else think that the 15gig should have been a 20? 100 bucks for a dock, 5gig, and control thingy seems like a waste of ca$h. At least if you go for the 10gig you can buy the dock for $39.

How long before cg pics go away and pics of the real thing show up at www.apple.com/ipod/ ??? Did they have to wait until Friday to get one too...? :D :confused: :rolleyes:

I hope they don't broadcast the Baby got back commerical on TV. I don't think those lyrics are appropriate for kids or some parents would not appreciate it. Personally I found it a little funny a light-hearted because me and a friend of my like to sing that song in a joking way.

I did like the one with the girl sing "I'll be there" she was kind of cute in a shy way and probably exemplifies the average users. I also like to picture her singing that song as opposed to Micheal Jackson. If fact I'd buy a .99 track of her singing that song if it was released.

You CALLED Apple about this? Lord have mercy...

If I was a customer service drone in a warehouse somewhere and some freak called me up demanding to know why they couldn't buy a song featured on a commercial that was shown 2 hours ago that I probably hadn't seen because I'd have been at work all day, on a service that I didn't even know existed or had seen any sooner than everyone else on the planet I'd be stupified too. Stupified as in, "what the ***** are you talking about, you spastic twat?"

The person you talked to was probably handed a quick fact sheet around 2:00 PM EST yesterday and that's as far as their knowledge goes.
