How do I keep my Powerbook running fresh?

I am a switcher. In windows everything would start to slow down after a while, and to speed this up I used system maintainance.

I don't know if this is an issue with apple computers...but if so(or even if it's just good to refresh it) how do I do something like system mainantance in OSX?
