I won't buy one until they put a good analog audio input... or maybe if a fireware adapter that does the same was released...
I'll use my MD for now...

If the University of California Regents did not take all my money I would be happy to buy one, but alas they have drained my bank account so I am unable to purchase one. :(
And since the economy blows I wont find a job when I graduate in june, so I wont be able to get one then either. :(
Damn you apple... damn you... quit making things I want so I can be happy with my iBook... ;)

if my work situation improves, and last/this week looks very promising, then yeah i'll get one, i bought the original 5gig the day it came out, and sold it months ago (to pay for rent, ouch). so i need a new one. i'm liking the 30gig, very sleek, i don't like the touch sensitive scrollwheel though, i liked the old style one that you could spin round. but yeah, couple of months maybe, along with a new p800 phone and a laptop of some sort. i'd love the 17' but it's not exactly portable now, it's massive! :)

I had planned to buy one immediately but I don't like the new look. It looks plain. I'll go take a look at one in person, maybe it'll have more impact. But the design is a step backwards, at least that's my initial impression.
I'm going to take a look at some alternatives. The old 20g iPod and some of the new competitors.

I bought a 10gig yesterday (for my brother).
I already have a 10gig (old model), and it works great. I'd love to sell it and get the 30gig, but I don't really need that much HDD space.

10gb model is finally cheap enough.

When I went to the apple store I thought it said "order today and have it by friday." When I went back later, that message was gone and the order says "shipping by 5/5". Did they sell out the units that were ready for immediate delivery? Or were my eyes deceiveing me?

it's pretty crazy how, after a year and a half, you can score a thinner/smaller iPod, with six times the capacity, a remote, a carrying case, a dock, ACC encoding, more games, an alarm clock and a calendar, a customizable user interface and the ability to create playlists ... for just $100 more than the original.
go Apple!

In earlier polls about purchasing an iPod I voted no. This time I voted "undecided". Don't ask me why. I dunno if it had something to do with the price drop, new design, docking cradle or the fact that I've got a new job with a substantial pay increase and close enough to walk to. OR could it be ALL those factors?! I'm seriously thinking about getting one now. I might wait until my birthday in August though.

No... I got my 5 gig at MWNY last year on the first day. It hasn't given me a problem since. And now that I spent all day yesterday converting all my music to AAC (still have to rerip a lot of stuff from CD), my iPod now stores like 1500 songs. That's more than I could possibly need at any given time.
And I don't like the new button position. They screwed up a perfect interface.

I am very happy with my current 20 gig iPod.
The current new crop of iPods look great and if I did not have my 20 gig now, I would buy a 30 gig, however, I do have the 20 gig.
I see the current 30 gig as an incremental step, and I am waiting for the next evoloutionary (species change) jump.
Balanceable Audio (to manage different abilities in left and right hearing)
Dual external mics in the ear buds for Pass Through amplify-able Audio (for monitoring the outside world as audio boosting hearing aid working with the balanceable L&R)
Video, video phone, GPS and a couple other useful things.
All running off bluetooth so that the pod can sit in my pocket and I have a couple little bitty wireless earbuds that send me tunes, give me super hearing, call my friends, pull out the screen and get visual directions, automatically call an ambulance. ... Species jump!

Still waiting for the 5x8 pda/tablet thinggy. I am sure it will be more useful than the ipod, and still just as portable.

I have an old 10 GB iPod (scroll wheel) The only thing it doesn't do apparently that the new ones do and I care about is the on the go playlists.
I don't care about the games, and right now, I don't care about the customizable menus.
If my iPod dies (out of warranty) I would get a new one instead of getting it repaired. However, it still works well.
I'm still waiting for a must have feature.

I voted undecided, because I'd like to sell my 10GB iPod to my brother and buy a new one.
The problem is, my brother uses a windows pc and I don't know if he will be able to use my mac iPod. Is it possible/needed to format the iPod, so my brother can use it? Or is this impossible at all?
Thanks,
Veldek

Your Mac iPod should have no problems with a PC computer, you'll have to download the Windows software from the Apple website, but yeah, should not be difficult. There is no hardware difference between the Mac and Windows iPod, totally software.

I think that once you format it, it'll be fine, I may be wrong but I think it's because a Mac will recognize a PC filesystem but a PC won't recognize the Mac's. . . maybe.
Anyway, so now that there are a couple of different versions of the iPod, is it time to nickname the old and new? I'm calling them "cyclops" and "4-eyes" personally. . . I know that's lame but I hate having to say "the new [or old] iPod". . .

I probably gonna buy the 15 gig. I like the dock but 30 gig is too big for me. And it saves me 100 euro. Can I also hook it up at a friends pc and exchange (legal) files?

The On-the-Go Playlist is what I was waiting for.
My only remaining concern is whether or not I can add Playlists to the On-the-Go Playlist. I know I can add songs and albums, and that works for almost all of my needs, but being able to add Playlists would be the "killer function" for me.

Perhaps. Maybe. I'm getting a little tired of fumbling with CDs in the car. An iPod with an iRock transmitter attached to it sounds pretty good to me.:D

To us an iPod I would have to upgrade to a new computer, my iBook dosn't have FireWire. It would be a nice toy, but until I can justify it as a tool, I have no reason to purchase one.

This morning I sent an email to all my friends to "unintendedly" inform them that my birthday is coming up really close. I also included a link and "unintendedly" mentioned how cool it is and how much I love it. Hope they are smart enough to see the "relationship" :D

I'll use my MD for now... i wouldn't hold my breath if i were you. the iPod would have to have an encoder to save audio in mp3 format, and i don't think that would be practical... i suppose it could be done, but ultimately, i think it defeats the purpose of having a pocket-ized music player if it makes it have to be any bigger or anything like that. i would much rather pay in features than size. the last thing the iPod needs is an elaborate recorder.

Yeah, I'm going to get one of the new ones...the 15 gig model.
I originally was bummed because there wasn't going to be a 40 gig model (so I could fit all of my songs on there), but now I see that the 10/15 gig models have hit something of a sweet spot in portable sizing...similar in size to the small Sony handheld computers. I think the new size is a big deal, as I'll be even more likely to take it with me (in a pocket or on a belt clip).
I also like the new "all touch-sensitive, no moving parts" design of the buttons. I'm assuming the main reason they moved the buttons up top is because if they had left them in their original position with the original size, it would be difficult to accurately press using the touch-sensitive pads (too narrow).
The other thing I really like about the new design is the rounded front. I wonder if some of the people complaining about the new button positions aren't taking into account the fact that the rounded top and thinner design will effectively give you better reach with your thumb.

I plan to get a 15Gb iPod in a couple of weeks once I have some money + am sure no problems exist with them.

I voted yes, already bought one, though it's not necessarily true, depending on how you define 'new iPod'. I bought a nice new 20GB iPod from the store, where it was discounted to $399 because of the new iPods coming out. I figured, 5GB more space, but no dock, and no waiting. I can handle that. :D
So, I've now joined the ranks of people with an iPod. Happy me!

one, but unfortunately, this isn't the case.... yet. ;)
so no. :(;)

I'm assuming they did it to keep the production costs a lot cheaper, I'm sure that is cheaper to make, while keeping a thin profile. And they can sell it for less as well.
Beyond that, there aren't any real advantages that I see. I have the original scroll wheel, and would sometimes have a problem shifting the volume without wanting to, fumbling for it in the dark, but I never have considered that a problem. I probably would have bought the second wave of iPod if i wasn't unsure about the touchpad. The original looks the best, with that thick lucite front. The newest is more practical and utilitarian.

I totally agree. Apple could make a KILLING if it had some sort of support for audio input. I'd love to be able to record live concerts and groups that I play in right to an iPod. In 24 bit, 44.1Khz or HIGHER bit rates.
