I don't have enough talent to make one myself! :D It's available on the Oilers website.

It was our pleasure helping the Rangers win in 1994, if only to prove the core group had plenty of cups left in them if the team hadn't been dismantled.

that just makes me laugh out loud! Have you seen the new Ice Age? I haven't, but there is one take on a commercial where the acorn goes under the ice (on a frozen lake), and then a piece of it flips over and the acorn is on top and the squirrel is under the water. I rolled when I saw that!

Why do people keep asking for pm of the image if they like it and are asking someone to share, then why do they not want the link easily accessible to the community rather than requesting only they get the link? :( The theme is holidays, get in the spirit and keep it. If you like something on a thread that people clearly are engaged in such as this one, then the chances are that someone else will likely be interested in the link as well.

You can theme the Mac's GUI with an application named ShapeShifter. While I'm personally not a big fan of darker-colored GUIs, it definitely looks slick. I use themes that are different enough to be noticed, but that's about it. I actually like the Aqua interface and want to remain somewhat true to it.

ShapeShifter is shareware, so it's not free... but you can try it for 15 days or so and then decide if you want to buy it. If you do and want to look at some other great shareware apps, I'd suggest strolling over to www.macheist.com. Right now they've got a big bundle for sell for $49 ($39 if you were doing the heists all along). ShapeShifter is included in that bundle along with several other really great titles.

That is the wallpaper. I used Carbon (obviously). All the icons were either stock or picked out of packs I got from InterfaceLIFT. I also colored the backgrounds of the folders gray, to add a little extra.

Does anyone know how I can change icons without CandyBar, until I can afford to buy it. Just being in college 12.95 is alot. PM me if you can point me in the right direction.

I'm glad you like the theme... I wanted it to be like new school meets old school, so I am going to use only modified Aqua icons (like black and white) with classic OS 9 icons, that haven't been changed.

PS- someone should use these

I know this is completely off topic.. but I agree, although sadly many people don't. A semi-friend of mine in college thought being in a frat was the "be all, end all" of his college existence. He barely had money to put himself through college and used what he had left (plus more, putting him in further debt) to pay dues to a frat... ended up very badly and it's costing him much more in the long run. Not only did he get kicked out of the frat, but he's been in college for 7-8 years now (he was there a year or 2 before I started and is still there now that I've graduated after 4 years) and still has classes he needs before he can graduate.

You are indeed right that the "Phi" sits in-front of the "Sigma" and "Kappa," thus being read as Phi Sigma Kappa. It is the same way that our active-member pin is designed.

And Canerican, the amount of time involved in being in a fraternity really depends on how active the chapter is, and how much you want to put into it. This isn't to say that you can just join and not do anything though.

To me, the "a lot of work" that people often refer to with regard to fraternities, is the process of joining, or what some may call "pledging." This usually lasts one semester, and typically requires new associates or "pledges" to attend classes learning about the history of their fraternity, at the end of training program, which in my case was 8 weeks long, you will be given a test on the information that you learned.

If you have any questions, feel free to PM me.

Try Adobe Illustrator CS2.

One of the new features in that version is "auto trace". Play with its settings to vectorize a photo, and you can come up with results that are similar to that. To get the best results, though, you'll probably have to manually edit it a bit, unless someone knows a trick to it.

I agree, the live trace feature is awesome. It's especially good for taking hand-drawn sketches and vectorizing it for resizing to print on a large area, where otherwise just scanning the raster image would pixelate really bad.

In Live Trace, though, it has a drop down that gives you various options. I don't have it installed at the moment, so I can't fiddle with it, but I think there's a photo option or something similar that keeps color and such. Tweaking that helps get it fairly close, but you're right, to get it just like the picture here, you'd definitely need more tweaks.

Well its just a couple apps really, though they are neat ones.

The System Monitor on the far left is called X Resource Graph (http://www.gauchosoft.com/Software/X%20Resource%20Graph) using a custom blue toned skin.

To the right of the system monitor, all of those vertical icon container things, is done by using an app called DragThing (http://www.dragthing.com) with the theme "Let's Be Bad Guys".

DragThing is basically a better dock (it doesnt disable the dock though, it is still there) and allows you to file and easily access folders, urls, documents, and well anything else for that matter. Its completely configurable (hot keys, sounds, effects, you name it) and you can make as many floating holder things as you can think of. Showing an Apps version number is a nifty feature as well, as is the ability to show full paths via hovering over them, Like I said, lots of options).

And to quickly just explain my layout of these, the first one contains my harddrives, networked drives and any cds/diskimages, and trash and desktop. The second one, contains all active processes, excluding system processes(they can be shown though optionally). The next bar is like the dock, it has all apps I use, links to documents, URLs and Folders. Finally the last box has shortcuts for some most used things, especially a few one touch connect to server buttons, which gets shown by the up and down green arrows on the icons. Also this lets you put a trashbin on the desktop, which I kinda like.

Finally the white text at the top of the screen is displayed using an app called GeekTool (http://projects.tynsoe.org/en/geektool) which lets a few custom scripts that I wrote output onto the screen. My scripts are here (http://rob.sdf-eu.org/macrumors/SystemMonitoring), but be forewarned this can be pretty resource intensive depending on what scripts you use and how often they update.

Oh and that little thing at the bottom left is just a web radio player, FStream (http://sourcemac.com/?page=fstream).

He always has these cool screenshots. Very unixy and geeky stuff....in a good way that is.

Hey thanks, yeah I always have this insessant need to know as much as possible about everything going on with my laptop at all times :D .

I doubt I'd use them myself, but I'd be interested in knowing what app has made the popup windows with the app icons. As far as the bar on the far left with the system monitoring info, it looks like the mac port of gkrellm. The text on the desktop looks like what you get with GeekTool. However, they're outputting text from the command line, so you need to know the commands necessary such as "uptime".

CrackedButter, nice! Was that hard to do?
BryanP, did you make that yourself? If so, same question.

It wasn't hard, it just took me around 15 hours (8 of those hours were straight) to do. I'm not that knowledgeable with Illustrator.

Here's my first:

I've had the standard mac blue thingy on for the first 3 weeks. But as it's Christmas, i'd thought I'd change! +it means I get to mess around on my new toy!

I treated myself to a MBP 17" C2D 3 weeks ago, and Yes, I need they power of it for school work. ;)
I'm a switcher, and saw it as a desktop replacement that is portable, (to replace an aging 4 year old P4)

Let me know what you think about the wallpaper!

The snowfall screensaver would go really well with that. For anyone else that wants a good winter-themed screensaver:
http://www.alittlebitofnothingleft.net/snowfall/

here's a short clip of it in action for those who are curious before trying:

note that I tweaked the color and such- by default, it's red with red bars going across

Now I have a matching set. ;)
I got the background from iStockPhoto, it's a vector, so it can be scaled to any size! 30 inch or more??? :p

I don't know if I can post it... is that allowed?
At school, we are doing this "Young Enterprise" scheme, make something, sell it, basically. I'm the "Techy" and so called designer, so I bought that with the companies budget and stuck it on as a background for the Christmas fair where we promote our product.

It's Christmas... should I post it?

It looks like none of those files/folders are accessible via the web. Trying to go to "phoenix.co.uk/images" gives a permission error, and the others 404.
Are you sure that folder you're looking at is a public folder on a web server? If so, how do you view it in the Finder? I've never been able to stick a connection to my FTP in the Finder like that....

Not really into the holiday-themes since my desktop usually remains the same for long periods in the first place. Generally they're pretty simple though. This however is my first customization on my new Mac Mini :) . Looks great!

Rockin' idea! I'm so totally doing the same -- using the screensaver as a desktop. Thanks for the idea davidjearly! I too am using the Apple Store screensaver (http://www.alittlebitofnothingleft.net/snowfall/) as my desktop using the following in Terminal.app:

/System/Library/Frameworks/ScreenSaver.framework/Resources/ScreenSaverEngine.app/Contents/MacOS/ScreenSaverEngine -background

Beautiful.

^ As do I .... link please!

All I did was take a screenshot of the screensaver when the snowflakes were falling the way I liked them.

I can however upload this if people can't be bothered with that or can't get the keystroke right on time.

David

EDIT: Lixivial's method is more elegant I guess...

Lixivial
Dec 21, 2006, 04:03 AM
No, davidjearly, it's not a matter of elegance; elegance would be using a separate app such as Backlight (http://freshsqueeze.com/products/freeware/) or an AppleScript solution. It's more a matter of a moving desktop vs a static picture. I just assumed that you had used the screensaver as your background rather than a screenshot of it. Both solutions work well, they just do different things. :)

Even though you weren't, I still appreciate the idea because, while I knew of the feature, I never found a screensaver suitable as a desktop. Until I saw your screenshot, that is. :)

Thank you very much for the clever terminal code....

Is there a way I can close terminal and still have the snow background falling?

EDIT: Nevermind....you posted the solution in that exact post

All it does is overlay the screensaver over the desktop picture. In fact if you have it running and use expose, you will see the desktop pictures appear. If you run Backlight, you can return to normal by clicking the menu item and selecting "Stop Screen Effect."

If you run it in Terminal the exact way I posted, simply closing Terminal will return your desktop to normal. If you run it as a background process (so that it will run even after closing Terminal.app) by appending an & to the end of the command I posted, you will have to use Activity Monitor or the kill command to stop the ScreenSaverEngine process. That's why I intentionally left off the & in my previous post and suggested using Backlight or a very simple custom rolled Applescript solution, which is what I do.

Anyroad, it does not affect your wallpaper settings.

Sweet, thanks for the link to the CS3 icon. I absolutely hate the "blandness" of the new Adobe icon scheme... I can't believe a company that makes some of the most widely-used design software could design something like that and use it.
