Go on then, I'll play...

Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not – Arctic Monkeys
Superbi – The Beautiful South
The Chronicles Of A Bohemian Teenager – Get Cape. Wear Cape. Fly.
Empire – Kasabian
Sam's Town – The Killers
How We Operate – Gomez
The Life Pursuit – Belle And Sebastian
Hot Chip – The Warning
The Back Room – Editors

... and I'll also have a compilation album, if that's allowed. The Best of Radio One's Live Lounge has some fantastic and in some cases downright strange music on it. I like.

My Top Ten:

THE DEARS -- Gang of Losers
THE STROKES -- First Impressions of Earth
MORRISSEY -- Ringleader of the Tormentors (although his B-sides that followed were even better)
BECK -- The Information
RICHARD BUTLER -- Richard Butler
THE KILLERS -- Sam's Town
KEANE -- Under The Iron Sea
BEN KWELLER -- Ben Kweller
KASABIAN -- Empire
THE BEATLES -- Love (not exactly new, but certainly fresh) ;)

1. Juliette & the Licks: Four on the Floor
2. Iron Maiden: A Matter of Life and Death
3. Morrissey: Ringleader Of The Tormentors

I could add Dans Til Musikken, a tribute album to Lasse Myrvold, but I guess that is irrelevant for about 99.9% of the MR community... :(

Cannot think of any other albums worth mentioning, The Eraser was REALLY disappointing, and The Open Door by Evanescence seems like a step down from Fallen.

Wolfmother - 'Wolfmother'
The Hot Puppies - 'Under the Crooked Moon'
Isobel Campbell & Mark Lanegan - 'Ballad of the Broken Seas'
Red Hot Chili Peppers - 'Stadium Arcadium'

Plus three possible contenders (if I could afford them ;) ):

Morrissey - 'Ringleader of the Tormentors'
Yeah Yeah Yeahs - 'Show Your Bones'
Damien Rice - '9'

Dec 4, 2006, 03:10 PM
In no particular order:

Beatles - Love
Fratellis - Costello music
Feeder - Singles
Fatboy slim - Why try harder
Zero 7 - The garden
U2 - U218
Lily Allen - Alright, still...
Dirty pretty things - Waterloo To Anywhere
Subways - Young for eternity
Badly drawn boy - Born in the UK

This year's best albums for me were compilations for bands that I could never be bothered to spend my small budget on. In fact, the music I have enjoyed the most this year has to be the old stuff - mainly getting back into my Beatles collection, and Pink Floyd.

2006 is a weak year for music. Although there were some notable releases, 2006 has been a disappointing year for music. 2005 on the other hand was very solid.

2006 is a weak year for music. Although there were some notable releases, 2006 has been a disappointing year for music. That seem to be an opinion you're not alone to have, thus the "2006: The Year of Disappointment. (http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=229850)"-thread... ;)

2) Revelations - Audioslave (I do realise that some people hate this album, but it grew on me)
3) Underworld Evolution Soundtrack - Various Artists

And the stupidest albums goes to:

10? That's tough. I think this is the first year in a long while that I haven't bought a lot of albums. While not the best, the ones I've listened a bit:

Ta Dah - Scissor Sisters
A Posteriori - Enigma
A Lively Mind - Paul Oakenfold
Press Play - P. Diddy

My iPod currently has older stuff on it, very little from this year. Hopefully, there'll be more noticable releases next year.

Someone asked this question in work and got this response from someone else:

Ahhh yes, that wonderful time of the year when all of the musical cognescenti in ONS start listing albums by bands that no-one has ever heard of...

Band no-one has heard of + album release in 2006 = album of the year.

Get in on the action people! Scour the net for obscure releases this year. It doesn't matter that you will probably never listen to the album more than twice in your entire life, or even that you've heard it at all - who's going to know!!!

It has been pointed out that people have different tastes in music and there's a chance you may not have heard of any of it. But the quoted person isn't having any of it!

Hmm, not got 10 really (very poor year for Music in my opinion) so I will post the few that I have purchased in no real order:

The Beautiful South - Superbi
The Housemartins - Live At The BBC (iTunes)
Keane - Under The Iron Sea
Snow Patrol - Eyes Open
Feeder - Singles (Ok I didnt buy it as I had all the songs already  )
Freddie Mercury - The Very Best Of Freddie Mercury Solo
The Darkness - One Way Ticket To Hell(this may have been 2005 but I bought it in 2006)
Morrissey - Ringleaders of the Tormentors

Well that makes 8, nearer to 10 than I thought I would be!

Joanna Newsom: «Ys»
Ghostface Killah: «Fishscale»
Bob Dylan: «Modern Times»
The Knife: «Silent Shout»
Mastodon: «Blood Mountain»
Arctic Monkeys: «Whatever You Say What I Am, That's What I'm Not»
Spank Rock: «YoYoYoYoYo»
Justin Timberlake: «Futuresex/Lovesounds»

I've always thought that these lists should be held back a year. We should be talking about 2005's best albums now - to see what albums stand the test of time after the hype has died down. A great example is Wilco's Ghost in the shell which was all over top 10 lists but doesn't even crack the band's top 5 (in my opinion). It will be interesting to see how many people are listening to Bob Dylan's Modern Times in the next few years. I predict very few.

With that said, the Snow Patrol album is really good...

2006 is a weak year for music.Agreed. I only bought a handful of 2006 releases:
- "Reprieve" by Ani Difranco
- "10,000 Days" by Tool
- "Wolfmother" by Wolfmother
- "Stone by Stone" by Floater
- "St. Elsewhere" by Gnarls Barkley
- "Hello Everything" by Squarepusher

The rest of my purchases this year were filling in some of the holes in my collection.

I dont think I could even name 10 albums from this year. I usually only buy a few singles through iTunes.

However, I did buy The Black Parade - My Chemical Romance and absolutely love it. So I would have that as number one on my list...

Hmmm, oh and I bought the Soundtrack to The Departed. I guess that would be number 2. Not much out there that really grabs my attention and makes me want an entire album these days.

Why hasn't "The Bes of What's Around" been mentioned?

I mean, Dave Matthews Band. Also, Continuum rocked.:D

So, in this order:
1. Continuum - John Mayer
2. The Best of What's Around - DMB
3. Stadium Arcadium - RHCP
4. The Pick of Destiny - Tenacious D
5. Live in New York - Jonatha Brooke

Can't really think of more. Unfortunatelt Ridin' Thumb or Sting haven't rewarded my hard work with new music, but all to come.:D

The Decemberists - The Crane Wife
Brand New - The Devils And God Are Raging Inside Me
The Killers - Sam's Town
Lily Allen - Alright Still
The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus - Don't You Fake It
The Cat Empire - The Cat Empire
The Shins - Wincing the Night Away (I realize it's not *technically* out right now, but after listening to it, it's really grown on me)
Ben Kweller - Ben Kweller
Muse - Black Holes and Revelations
My Chemical Romance - The Black Parade

P.S. As a Sufjan Stevens fan, I have to say that his Songs for Christmas album is awesome as well, but since it's a "holiday" album, I didn't include it.
P.P.S. The Kooks album Inside In/Inside Out is an honorable mention.

1. The Cat Empire - The Cat Empire
2. Thom Yorke - The Eraser
3. Beck - The Information
4. Counting Crows - Hard Candy

Off the top of my head, those are the only decent albums which have been released this year. I may have missed one or two, but I felt it's been quite disappointing this year. 2003, 1996 and 1973 were the best years ever for new album releases...

What's the deal with everyone not liking the Thom Yorke album. I think it's brilliant. No it is not Radiohead, but it is probably his best work since Kid A. The songs are beautiful, melodic, and fascinating. This album is definitely been a highlight for the year.

Since I only bought 11 CDs that were actually released during 2006 here is the order I rank them in.

John Mayer Continuum
Matt Costa Songs We Sing
Jack Johnson Curious George soundtrack
Jet Shine On
Red Hot Chili Peppers Stadium Arcadium
The Flaming Lips At War with the Mystics
The Killers Sam's Town
Sean Watkins Blinders On
Punk Goes 90's

These two are at the bottom of the list for the soul reason that I bought them and then never listened to them for whatever reason.

Thom Yorke - The Eraser

5. Albert Hammond Jnr - Yours to Keep
6. Bedouin Soundclash - Sounding a Mosaic
7. The Hold Steady - Boys & Girls in America
8. Mystery Jets - Making Dens

Kid A is good to listen to when you are on drugs......

I'm a huge fan of Radiohead's post-OK Computer output; the less conventional rock they become the more I like them. Their progression onto glitchy electronic themed stuff pretty much influenced me into checking out similar artists, and I haven't look back since.

Who possibly thinks Pablo Honey is the best album??

I would put Keane - under the iron sea in there lists or The Fray - How to save a life or the Decemberists - The crane wife.

I thought three Cds were pretty good

ok forgive me I am running on 5 hours sleep in two days... Keane and The Decemberists were mentioned.

I also think the Justin Timberlake CD is pretty good also for someone who is trying to shed his boy band image, I think him and Timerland make a good team when it comes to producing songs and music.

Such a shame that it's leaked...

It's a long year but the only album I liked this year in hip-hop was Christina Aguilera's album Back to Basics.

Most of the stuff is junk except for classical.

I like Helene Grimaud's new album. Good piano job.

Why is music quality declining? Can't Dylan even put out a good album anymore?

2. Boris - Pink
3. SunnO))) / Boris - Altar
4. Mastodon - Blood Mountain
5. Tom Waits - Orphans

Erm, I've having trouble thinking of the others

You, my friend, like some good music. I did not care too much fo 10,000 Days but I am still a Tool fan, and the album was not bad.

Did you not like ISIS' In the Absence of Truth, or the releases from Red Sparowes, or God is an Astronaut?

This was a good year for people into progressive/post/ambient rock/metal.

Damn, I'm glad I read through all three pages, reminded me of things that I'd forgotten came out this year (I'm still rounding out my back-catalog, so lots of things that were "new" to me this year really aren't that new). Though, to the dude who said that 2005's best was that Liars album... man, do you not have ears? That crap was completely unlistenable! Clear winner of 2005 was Sigur Rós' masterpiece "Takk...." The Decemberists' "Picaresque" was also an amazing 2005 album.

Anyway, in no particular order:

Mogwai - Mr. Beast
Belle & Sebastian - The Life Pursuit
The Decemberists - The Crane Wife
Neko Case - Fox Confessor Brings the Flood
Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Show Your Bones
Tool - 10,000 Days
Lupe Fiasco - Lupe Fiasco's Food & Liquor
The Pipettes - The Pipettes
The Dresden Dolls - Yes, Virginia
Clint Mansell - The Fountain Soundtrack (performed by The Kronos Quartet & Mogwai)

Honorable mentions go to:

Stars - Set Yourself on Fire (holy **** this one is awesome... but I JUST discovered it now, so I feel like the initial reaction to how awesome it is might be higher than its actual awesomeness quotient)
I'm From Barcelona - Let Me Introduce My Friends
Gotye - Like Drawing Blood

But yes, next year is exciting: new Shins (already awesome), new Massive Attack, new Filter (hopefully), new Jimmy Eat World, new Portishead (yeah right, but here's hoping), and probably lots of other stuff I'm forgetting about.

The new Massive Attack album is going to be good, I know someone who's a close friend of Grantley and apparently it's better than 100th Window (which was a pretty fine album, but not as good as their other stuff).

I'd heard about the new Portishead album too, but I doubt it's going to happen for some reason :(

What's the deal with everyone not liking the Thom Yorke album. I think it's brilliant. No it is not Radiohead, but it is probably his best work since Kid A. The songs are beautiful, melodic, and fascinating. This album is definitely been a highlight for the year.

I agree--"Harrowdown Hill", "Black Swan", "Skip Divided", that's some of Yorke's best material. I think people feel ripped off because it's only 9 tracks, and it's a bit cold, off-putting (and samey-sounding) at first. You really have to give it multiple spins. I think he sounds more enthusiastic on it than he has in Radiohead since Kid A.

Of course, most people would prefer that he re-write "High and Dry" 11 more times---that's what's disappointing. You would think that Radiohead fans were more adventurous.

Disappointed in:

Cat Power: The Greatest (snoozer country album, most boring thing she's probably done, and she has several dull albums; critics of course salivate)

RHCP: Stadium Arcadium (instead of 1 whole disc of purely mediocre songs, we get 2? Gee thanks, guys!! Frusciante should just stay solo..)

Kasabian: Empire (didn't even much like their debut, but this one just plain blows--why are these guys on a major label??? Who listens to this *****?)

DJ Shadow: The Outsider (could've been great if he'd cut down on the crunk-rappers and had busted out the avant-funk electronics that we have all come to love & expect--what has happened to Josh Davis?)

Also: Disappointed that there's still no new Brian Jonestown Massacre record this year. Strange.

Looking forward to: new Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, NIN, Massive Attack, Queens Of The Stoneage, Stooges, etc.

I buy between 50-100 CD's per year so a top 10 was tricky (and my taste a little eclectic) but

2) Claire Sproule - Claire Sproule
3) Juliette & The Licks - Four To The Floor
4) Mark Knopfler & Emmylou Harris - All The Road Running
5) The Open - Statues
6) Paolo Nutini - These Streets
7) Damien Rice - 9
8) Ray LaMontagne - Till the Sun Turns Black
9) Sting - Songs From The Labyrinth
10) Yusuf - An Other Cup

Honorable mentions to the following artists albums released this year.

Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Taylor Hicks, Brad Paisley, Seth Lakeman, Nerina Pallott, Madeleine Peyroux, James Morrison, Guillemots, The Feeling, Belle & Sebastian, Amy Winehouse.

Edit: and Morrisey ;)

KPRI Live Tracks Volume 4 (http://www.kprifm.com/LiveTracksVol4.html)

Such a good mix of live acts definitely one of my favorites for this year.

Here are the artist that are on it: KT Tunstall, Jason Mraz, James Blunt, Blues Traveler, Lifehouse, Ozomatli, Pete Yorn, Moby, Saucy Monkey, The Fray, Donavon Frankenreiter, Train, Better Than Ezra, Kenny Wayne Shephard, Jonny Lang, and David Gray

4 pages in an no love for JC or the Dixie Chicks?

1 - Johnny Cash, American V: A Hundred Highways
2 - The Dixie Chicks, Taking the Long Way
3 - Tom Waits, Orphans
4 - Jay-Z, Kingdom Come

That might be it for me... the Tom Petty album was so-so... I'm not a big fan of The Islands, but Return to the Sea was pretty good (saw them live -- their performance blew the album out of the water).

Maybe I wasn't as adventurous with new albums as I should have been this past year. All of my favorite artists seem to be dead, which is a problem. No more Zevon, no more Wesley Willis, and Rick Rubin will eventually run out of Johnny Cash recordings to release.

As for the following, I dunno either. It seemed like a pretty crap music year to me, but my students are through the roof excited about this Bodom band. Sounds like bad 80's thrash metal to me, but I 'spose I was guilty of Headbanger's Ball once myself ...
