View Full Version : iMovie Cross Dissolve Audio Problem

I'm editing some DV footage from my camcorder, and I'm running into a strange problem.
I've split the footage into clips, and I'm trying to use cross dissolves between them to add transitions. In some cases, the transition is placed at the split between what would otherwise be continuous footage. In others, I've chopped out about 10 to 15 seconds in the footage.
In these transitions, the video is fine, but some random stray audio blares out during the transition. The audio is not from either the end of one or the beginning of the other clip. The footage is an orchestra performance, and each clip ends with applause and the next clip begins with silence, and in the transition, I get the loud sound of the strings????
This is very frustrating for me, as I've made what would otherwise be a pretty nice disc, but the glitch in the transitions is very disappointing.
Any ideas?

Was that tape (if it was miniDV) ever used to record a strings concert before? Perhaps with 16 bit sound, and your current video is in 12 bit?

This is a bug with iMovie which rears its head occasionally.
If I know I'm doing lots of cross-dissolves, I now extract the audio from the clips and then make the video line 'silent' by checking the appropriate box on the right.

Fantastic tip! This is probably obvious to you veterans out there, but this saved my ego on one of my first big productions!! I'm still a newbie. :)
Thanks!

Even if you had 100 or more clips together would you still extract the audio??

I have done... although it's rare for me to need the sound from so many clips ;)
Then I tend to work in chunks. I'll complete a section of around 50 clips and then get that working. Then I'll export that audio layer out to AIFF and delete the individual ones. Importing the AIFF file back in gets me 1 sound clip (admittedly no longer editable) and keeps iMovie relatively speedy.

oh so familiar (http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=219689)..
Personally, I'm sick of extracting audio to fix this problem and will be buying FCE once xmas is out of the way..:(
