After living with a 12" PowerBook (60gb) for the past 2 years I thought that a 160gb HDD in the iMac would be enough. Low and behold it wasn't.
I have a 300gb drive sitting in an external case for the time being, would it be possible to swap the HDD's around? I've no idea what physical size the iMac HDD is, but the external one is a 3.5".

If it's a current gen iMac it uses a SATAII HD, if your external one is of the same spec it will work. The iMac HD is a 3.5" so the size is no problem, only gotta check that connector out

Bugger, I don't think it has.
Though a new 500gb SATA HDD would set me back £130 which isn't that bad at all! That and my 300gb should see me through for many years.

What about getting inside the iMac? I can imagine that being a huge pain.
