"We're also taking steps to ensure a mistake like this doesn't happen again."
They should really be taking steps to make sure that a mistake like Windows doesn't happen again.

I'm surprised they admitted there was a mistake. I thought they'd just pull the update and then deny there ever was one.
I remember several years ago when a virus managed to infect Windows Update. It trashed one of my computers. I had solid proof that it came from MS's servers. I reported it to them, as a good citizen. The response I got was one of "that's impossible, you must be lying". And when I pressed the issue, they got indignant, and then stopped replying altogether. (They did remove the infected update, so someone got the message, but to this day, you'll find no admission that there ever was a problem.)
Microsoft's support department exists for one purpose - to deflect bad PR. If there's a problem that doesn't result in a media circus, they will deny it exists.
