I'm looking for a player that will play avi's and other file formats. Quicktime doesn't play all avi's and my avi-to-mov converter turns some movies all green. Is there a good player out there?

Is there anything else? Is there any add-ons for quicktime? VLC is fine except it has a lot of lag time while waiting for a movie to start. Also on VLC while trying to skip ahead further in a movie, it just sits and processes forever (1-2 min) before actually playing. Mplayer is good, except that you can't fast forwards or rewind. Why can't Apple just make quicktime play these formats?
