And yet WMP looks nothing like iTunes at all. The Zune software does look at lot like iTunes, while still being "Zune"-like e.g. cumbersome to use, overly complicated for basic functions.

The latest iTunes is near-perfect. The integrated iPod manager is awesome. The cover art browser (which Apple purchased, of course) is neat.

From what I have read of Zune software and the Zune itself (via Engagdet) the Zune software is a standard Microsoft software turd and the device is a clunker (the "wheel" is not a scroll wheel at all).

Yeah, it's not so much the literal user interface but the features that they copy. And copy, they did and do. Early versions of Video for Windows actually contained QuickTime code - that, and some other "borrowings", were behind the 1997 settlement (the $150 million "investment").
