I'm under the impression that those are placeholder graphics.

Nope, they are the real deal:

They are even using the new adobe reader graphic:

Well, in that case, yikes.

It'll be a nightmare to distinguish between that lot, not to mention the inconsistencies (some of them have the second letter in lowercase, others have it in uppercase but a smaller font, and some of them are graphics).

Plus I don't see the ones for Help Viewer or Stock Photos on there :p

I think they are really good. When I first saw PS CS3 i thought they were a placeholder, but now I know they are not, well I like them even more.

Their reasons are valid for doing this and by them not trying to make them stand out, they stand out in a different manner.

Anyway, I love them.

Shame. I'm not impressed.

I can live with it. The CS2 icons drive me bonkers, with Illustrator and ImageReady having the same color scheme, but ImageReady and Photoshop both using feathers :p

Maybe they could work just a little harder on them. Round the corners slightly. Maybe add subtle graphics behind the letters to help us tell them apart.

I do like the color scheme idea though.

Honestly, the new icons don't bother me, but they don't impress me either. It seems that the company that makes the de-facto tools for imaging and press professionals could come up with something better, they just are completely uninspired.

because adding craptacular visual eyecandy is supposed to make them better somehow?

i quite like them, they are different enough and the letter combinations are much, much clearer than the flower/butterfly/feather they use now. it works much more systemically and the undertone of the periodic table as a connotative nod to these programs being the "elements" of design software is reasonably clever. i also think that they will clean up the dock by making it simpler and neater looking as well. the system is also nicely extensible.

i would like to see them get rid of the graphic elements and stay purely typographic as i think that would make it stronger as a whole.

Ugly though. At least the CS2 icons looked good in my Dock. Now I'll have to keep them hidden away.

Hmmm looks like Table of Elements to me but with Color Wheel used. Mehhh I can always change the icond if its too hard to decipher.

I like these icons better than the current ones, but they could have been better.

I'm generally a minimalist as well, but I just don't see these icons as being different enough when you have six or seven of them in the dock. I like the elements of design metaphor as well, I just don't think it's enough...they should also hint at the elements of the programs themselves.

And I'm not asking for "craptacular visual eyecandy". I want them to add very subtle hints (for example, maybe a subtle lens iris behind the "Ps" of Photoshop) to these icons, not animate them with dancing squirrels and disco Jesuses.

I believe Adobe achieved a functional design characteristic with these icons, which in turn is really what the CS3 is about. If I have 5-10 of these icons in my dock, I think it'll work very well for indentifiable purposes. We're all used to seeing the little .AI or .PSD icon design element on the current generation of CS files so it should have the same effect on the actual application icon - let's hope so anyway.

Graphically, I'm a bit bored with the concept. But afterall, they are just icons. I do, however, like how they've kept the colors somewhat consistant throughout the versions of the creative suite. Ex. Photoshop: blue, Dreamweaver: green, InDesign: pink. This feature also adds an identifiable trait to the icons, perhaps it will carry over to the file version as well.

I don't applaud the design, but I don't disapprove either. I'm just glad that the programs will finally run natively on my iMac!

But, if you're honest with yourself, doesn't a Jesus-as-portrayed-by-John-Travolta really sum up the core features of Photoshop? :D

I don't like them, and I don't hate them, but they sure do look goofy in the dock. It's like adding a pack of rainbow Starburst to your dock. Surely they could have come up with a better idea.

i really don't like them.
i like the CS2, and the round macromedia icons a lot better.
i like the fonts they used for macromedia,
but i guess since it's one nation under adobe they'll all be related..

CS2 had nicer icons.

Those are more "minimalistic" indeed, but it looks like someone really just wanted to make cheap looking icons lol.

In the upper right, over in the red area. The swirly f logo is probably the Flash player, Fl below that for the Flash editor, the film strip for the video encoder. Those'd be my guesses anyway.

yes, I am too. Are those colored boxes the icons that are going to show in the finder? If that's true, then that's ridiculous. Worse icons I've ever seen....will definitely use replacements

Very good idea. Poor execution. Too generic. Boring. Not the end of the world though. If the icons are the worst complaint I have about the apps, I'll be dancing in the streets.

I couldn't care less about the app icons, those are changeable with Candybar!
However, Adobe Photoshop CS3 icons (http://macthemesforums.net/viewtopic.php?t=16778609) for you freaks ;)

Thank god that was a joke, that would drive me round the bend trying to pick a tool.

horrid icons, but luckily for me (and my eyes) I have my dock hidden at all times. Doesn't make a difference to me, I'll still buy CS3 when it's released.

I really really like this icon set. And i have been so impressed with the beta version of CS3, the Vanishing Point just takes it to a whole new level.

I cant wait to see what additions come in Photoshop CS3Pro. Im hoping for an ability to rotate the canvas just for editing. which out actualy editing the image. That probably doesnt make any sence, but some people might know what i mean.

Sorry, but i don't think GoLive and DreamWeaver are going to be included in CS3 since they killed GoLive in favor of DreamWeaver. I think CS3 will look like this and i'm excited about it.

Edit: CS3 Premium is what i think this will be.

I get all of them except for "Fw" and "Vc"?

I could have sworn and bet money on the icons being placeholders when I first saw the Photoshop CS3 one. When I found out the truth, I hated them a LOT.

I've uninstalled the CS3 beta now (too buggy vs. speed), but actually the icon was starting to grow on me. Maybe by the time the Suit comes out I'll actually like them.

FW is for FireWorks (which is replacing ImageReady i think)
and VC is VersionCue

I put Flash in there as more of a hopeful thing, than being realistic. I wonder with all the Macromedia stuff if they will have to bundle it differently now

CS3 Print= ID, PS, AI, Acrobat Pro/Distiller
CS3 Web= PS, AI, FW, DW, FL
CS3 Ultra= ID, PS, AI, Acrobat Pro/Distiller, FW, DW, FL

for everyone who doesn't know what the icons are check this site out

At first glance I didn't like them but after a couple of minutes I realise that they are a brilliant concept.

I'm using CS still and I wouldn't mind having a new powerbook for each time I've hit the ImageReady icon instead of InDesign.

However seeing as I won't be ugrading until CS4, it's no biggy.

I believe these icons are a step below the CS2 ones.

I actually laughed-- out loud-- when I saw the image.

Then I saw it was linked from an Adobe page.

I'm terrified. These are HORRIBLE excuses for a "new icon". I admit it, I didn't mind CS2 (CS3, eh). What the hell happened to pretty icons? InDesign 2, anyone? Photoshop 7? Sure, they weren't "functionally related", but you knew they had something to do with each other.

1. They are square. Every app icon in the Dock is on a slant. This is just plain stupid.

2. Text on an icon DOES NOT WORK. Ever. The worst thing about the Macromedia MX icons was how ridiculous they looked-- it's insulting. Dw, F? At least MS Office managed to make shapes of letters that stood out in a way that DIDN'T LOOK STUPID IN THE DOCK (since they were mostly transparent). You'd think Adobe would know better than to follow Macromedia's example and create another nonstandard shape...

(with no other way to determine the different apps aside from slight color shifts, we're reduced to reading--and deciphering--a 2-letter "code". Icons in OS X are supposed to be image-based, to AVOID these very problems.

3. The suite's corporate branding is now "we're square and colored"? These are DESIGN apps-- what are they smoking? Show me DESIGN! Give me something that conveys the function of the app or its logo (these are Human Interface Guidelines for a REASON)

I don't even want to know what the splash screens are going to look like. [sigh] Photoshop always had such wonderful splash screens until v6...

I'm really upset by this, simply because the Macromedia acquisition seems to have really screwed up Adobe in a lot more ways than I thought.

I think they suck.

So my dock will soon look like a periodic table? Surely they can do better than that?

Maybe Adobe should work with Apple to design some nice icons. :)

Everytime I see those lame lettered icons it always makes me think the Adobe people have been lurking about the macthemesforums.net (http://www.macthemesforums.net) as I've always seen this style in a lot of users desktops there, just like this one for example...
