I've never played these 2 so close together before, but how much better is R-Type 1 compared to 3? It seems much more precise, there are less frills. Music seems about the same, all except the boss battle music in 3 - horrendous.
Gamespot seems to like 3 a shade better than 1, as a more-refined take on the formula. That's what I would go on, but I never played R-Type very much.
EDIT: Good guess that N. America will also see New Adventure Island on Monday...I have an email from Hudson saying as much.

We talk about lost functionality...wonder if carts would see added functionality? Specificially, Excitebite's "save your custom track" feature never, ever worked (the game would hang up). Wonder if it would work on VC?

Bleh, where be the games I want.. Me me me me me me...
I want Intelivision, Colecovision and and Arcade options. I would buy R2 and games like BlackTiger in an instant.
I hope that Nintendo offers an external HDD later this year. I have a feeling I'll have used up most of my storage by that time.

R3 taints much of what made the first one great by confusing it with too many options that aren't necessarily better. Still a fun game though. :)
I own both on the VC, but would recommend R1 over R3, but both are worth getting.

So no US games that I want either. Hopefully Nintendo will see sense and give us Zelda. Surely that is going to be a huge seller.
Yea, R-Type 3 seems to just jazz up the series, the weapons option screen is good though. I like the variation. But it clouds the precision of the previous game. It's hard to describe, but objects have blind spots around them. Very noticeable around big enemies with the front shield thing activated. You have to get really far into them to do any damage at all. R-Type 1 is WYSISYG. It's like a classic film, free of special effects and "filler". Maybe it's me but 3 seems to run slower too, and not just with the PAL effect, it's the pacing. Difficulty is all wrong too. I can fly through level 1 without dying (easy as hell) but level 2? I lose 2 lives on average.
R-Type 2 perfected it IMO. Precision, better music and level design.
All still the pinnacle of shmups though. Gradius, Disposable Hero eat your heart out. Maybe not Project X '99 though.

R-Type 2 wasn't in that many arcades around me, so I rarely had a chance to play it, but I always gave it my money.
I just hope to beat the first one some day. :o

Are the Virtual Console games really worth it? I need a new game to play, at least for a week or two, and considering I don't have much money at all, the Virtual Console games look appealing.
JackAxe
Feb 18, 2007, 05:25 PM
Definitely worth it!
The Wii has become my complete gaming console. It's easy to transport, supports up to 8 controllers, and will plug into any TV.
I honestly didn't think I would even use this feature, since I've collected soooo many, errr, over the years. Playing on any computer, even my PowerBook just isn't as convenient. It's just awkward when it comes down to it.

^ personally I think they should be cheaper. Basically they all need to come down half price and I'd be more happy.
€10 for a N64 game download is too much considering a Playstation title on the PSN marketplace is only €5
Like for like, value for value - I think the virtual console games are all over priced.
theman5725
Feb 18, 2007, 05:46 PM
I also think they are a bit over priced, which is why I'm asking if they're really worth it. I've played my fair share of roms over the years, but nothing comes close to the actual experience of playing with a controller and on the the tv. I'm really short on money right now, which is why a VC game looks interesting compared to another Wii game.
Dagless
Feb 18, 2007, 05:57 PM
I think they're very much worth it.
I bought Kirby Adventure and Ninja Gaiden for about £4.99 each, boxes weren't too damaged either. Now Kirby is on the Virtual Console for £3.50 with the added convenience that I could download it any time and use the best 2D controller conceived. Exact same sound reproduction too, something GBA ports of various games could never replicate.
I'd like prices to be lower, who wouldn't! but at £3.50 (NES) £5.60 (SNES) £7.00 (N64) £5.60 (Mega Drive) £4.20 (TG) they've seriously undercut my regular source of retro gaming so it's nothing but thumbs up.

Do I want to buy DKC all over again? I beat it almost completely. The one secret I missed was in Kremcroc Industries. There's one mini-game where you have to tag the barrels so all of them show one banana. Then a barrel drops, and you break a wall and you have yet another mini game. From what I understand, it can only be done once.
DKC2 was still my favorite of the trilogy though. DKC3 was just too easy. DKC was cool for the time, but DKC2 was more refined. And DKC2 seemed bigger.
I'm wondering if I should buy SMW all over again, too. I got 96* on my original SNES cart. But, it wouldn't be a bad game to pick up again. Well, I go home this weekend, so I can play Kirby's Adventure all I want while I think about DKC and SMW. :D
I was kind of hoping for Excite Bike...

Nothing for me this week. :) So I'll most likely buy Mario World also.
There are a few N64 games I would still like to play, but I can never find them used, so I'm hoping they show up under VC. I have Zelda here, but will probably still buy it just so I can have all of the collection on my Wii.

Ha! that video was pretty funny! I was basing my impression on my memories which tend to be better than the actual games are. Still, I think TMNT 2 & 3 were pretty good. I am happy about Zombies though.
I'm thinking I only need 1 or 2 beat 'em ups though. What games would you guys get you were limited to only a few from this genre? River City Ransom? Double Dragon? BattleToads? Streets of Rage 2? Ninja Gaiden 2? I am having a hard time deciding but I think River City Ransom will be a must own for me.
Also, is the original Castlevania worth a look or would you go for 2, 3, or SC4? I want to support Konomi but I got Gunstar instead of Contra 3 because of its crazy difficulty. I remeber Simon's Quest being fun but 18 years later or so and my memory seems to be a bit faulty...

I agree, River City Ransom was just awesome. I'll buy it the instant it's released. I remember enjoying the Double Dragon games and BattleToads as well, but not as much as RCR.
I think the only NES game I'm looking forward to more than RCR is Bubble Bobble - not exactly a beat-em-up, but I couldn't tell you how many hours I spent playing that game, always 2-player mode with friends. GEJJJ!

I had some really old map for zelda in a gaming magazine from my youth. I memorized it later on in High School when I went through my first retro Old School NES phase :) . I could beat the NES one in around an hour or less...first way through...even got pretty good at the altered map that happens for the second run through...I'd put on cd's and see if I could finish before the cd was over. I think it was one play of Sublime and a half to beat it :)

Somehow, I actually managed to beat TMNT 1 once (in part helped by the "load up on scrolls in Level 3" trick). I remember that 5th level, where you look for & fight the Technodrome, was pretty cool.
Also beat NES Star Wars once, somehow. Some of the really hard games, you'd get in the zone and manage to beat them just that one time. Going back now, I wouldn't have the patience. Others that were hard seem much, much easier now (Guardian Legend).

Given that Nintendo had Zelda I, II, Ocarina, and Majora's Mask all working on the GC pack-in disk, it shouldn't take them any time at all to get these on the VC, if they want. Wonder if Majora's Mask will contain the same emulation (sound) glitches?

New consoles :) good stuff. Neo Geo means Metal Slug right? I mean it's like Mario or Sonic to them.
I really hope they spread the European love with C64/Amiga games. I know most the old studios are gone with the wind now, but Factor 5 could bring Turrican across (please no 3D remake), Rockstar/DMA could bring over Lemmings and Team 17 with Worms.

Hmm, Legend of Kage, all the 1985 Nintendo roster...heck, many or most of the NES VC games to date. Clearly Nintendo is rationing the dregs with the quality fairly evenly, and will probably continue to do so. Still only 2 N64 games in NA. Still many, many great SNES games outstanding, let alone tons of solid NES titles. Will we see already-compilationed games (Mega Man)? Final Fantasies?
Come to think of it, it makes sense to get the Mario, Zelda, and Sonic out early, to get people used to buying VC games; at the same time, padded with crap to keep the release #s up and prevent a save-the-worst-for-last situation; and, lots of interesting cult classic/forgotten gems choices (esp. TG-16 & Genesis) that get to shine. Pretty well handled, all in all.

1. I think you missed the point of my post...it's not like Nintendo's getting all the good games out now, only to have years of drought later - they're doing actually a very good job of balancing classics, crap, and forgotten gems (Zombies Ate My Neighbors soon?) I also was trying to point out that there are actually very few of the really great SNES, N64, even NES games out yet, thus still many waiting for the VC. Rock&Roll Racing, Super Dodgeball, and Blazing Lazers would make a happy Monday for me.
2. Might as well raise the compilation point again: I wonder if companies other than Nintendo will VC-port games recently included in "greatest hits" disks (Mega Man) or remakes (Final Fantasy)? MM Anniversary Collection did not get the Mega Man II difficulty right, so I'd get a "true" NA version on VC despite having the larger disk. And FF II US, might get that for its own sake even though I have a working cart.
The only reason companies might not do this is to avoid encroaching on their other compilation/remake sales, which surely have more profit involved. Only Nintendo seems willing to sell people eight versions of the same game in quick succession.
3. One other question: does the presence of a game on one virtual download service preclude it from others? I ask because of Contra on XBLA - if we don't get NES Contra on VC, that actually removes a big draw for gaming together with the wife.

I hadn't played Gunstar Heroes before I downloaded it on the VC and it is phenominal...I just got to level 6 today (the star fighter one) and it is really fun...(I should probably have already beat GH but I only have time to play my Wii on the weekends and I play VC titles between GC and Wii games...)

Most of them. :) I played most of their games in the arcade. Samarai Showdown is a good game, not as good as SF2, but still up there when it comes to fighters. I personaly liked it better than any of the Mortal Combats. :o I have SNK vs Capcom. I recommend picking it up if you have a real arcade sticks for the Cube. It contains most of SNK's characters along with modern SF2 characters.
I played GH with my friend. It took us 3 hours to beat. Was loads of fun. :) I bought Contra 3 also, now I'm just waiting to find time to play it through.

Nintendo being coy, or is it really just Ocarina of Time today? Usually we know by now.
EDIT: Can't tell if this site is official Hudson or not (leaning that way), but it says to A. expect the stunning Chew Man Fu today, and B. look for Splatterhouse and Double Dungeons in March.

If anyone gets Ocarina soon, please post about your impressions of it visually compared to the original N64 version. I'll definitely buy it when I get home tonight...I'm just curious. I'm just now getting into Zelda, being part way through LttP, so getting to play what many consider to be the best game of all time for the first time should be rewarding. :)

Does anyone know if there are any plans to release Panzer Dragoon Saga on the Virtual Console?
It was a 4 disc (cd based) game.
I'd say...no. :D
Unless they release a hard drive for the Wii (which itself is highly unlikely).
Many Saturn games had redbook audio so therefore the cds were full. (600 megs)
Even if they ripped the game itself and made mp3s of the audio, it'd still be 40-50+ megs per game (like Castlevania: Symphony of the Night will be on the 360 on Live).

I assume it looks the same as the disk-based Ocarina on the Collector's Edition GC pack-in. That version, truth be told, looked a little dated to me when I got it in 2003; the game definitely looked older & cruder than I remembered when first playing it on N64. All of that was before Twilight Princess, too. I hope there's not a lot of spoiled nostalgia when people start playing this today...gameplay is still great, after all.

New VC games - was Nintendo so worried that Ocarina of Time wouldn't stand out that they intentionally surrounded it with crap? Bio-Hazard Battle's "nuclear crabs, electroworms and gut-grabbing insects" aren't filling me with fear...abdominal cramps, maybe, but not fear. For Chew Man Fu, they also claim, "the fun is endless," which is probably a lie.

Today Nintendo adds three new classic games to the popular Wii™ video game system's Wii Shop Channel. The games go live at 9 a.m. Pacific time. Nintendo adds new games to the channel every Monday. Wii owners with a high-speed Internet connection can redeem Wii Points™ to download the games. Wii Points can be purchased in the Wii Shop Channel or at retail outlets. This week's new games are:
The Legend of Zelda®: Ocarina of Time (Nintendo 64®, 1 player, 1,000 Wii Points): The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time reveals the genesis of the fantasy land of Hyrule, the origin of the Triforce and the tale of the first exploits of Princess Zelda™ and the heroic adventurer Link. Vibrant, real-time 3-D graphics transport players into the fantasy world of Hyrule. The quest takes them through dense forests and across wind-whipped deserts. Players swim raging rivers, climb treacherous mountains, dash on horseback across rolling hills and delve into dungeons full of creatures that fight to the finish to put an end to their adventures. With immersive graphics, a sweeping story line, swashbuckling adventure, mind-bending puzzles and a touch of humor, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time is one of Nintendo's most epic challenges ever.
Bio-Hazard Battle™ (Sega Genesis, 1-2 players, 800 Wii Points): An army of biogenetic mutants has gone haywire, terrorizing the world and putting the future of the planet in jeopardy. In Bio-Hazard Battle, players must take on the mutant menace and restore order and harmony to the planet Avaron before it's too late. Through eight levels of intense action, they'll be up against some of the nastiest, most vile creatures they've ever seen, including things like mega amoebas, nuclear crabs, electroworms and gut-grabbing insects. They have four different Bioship fightercraft to choose from, each with unique handling capabilities and weapons systems. Hop into a fightercraft and save Avaron from certain doom in Bio-Hazard Battle.
Chew Man Fu (TurboGrafx16, 1-2 players, 600 Wii Points): A novel action-puzzle game set in the sacred towers taken over by the evil sorcerer, Chew Man Fu. It's up to an apprentice female monk to free the towers and lift Chew's curse to bring peace and fried rice back to the land once ruled by the Egg Roll Dynasty. The rules are simple. The objective is to clear each round by pushing or pulling four colored orbs onto their matching colored tiles. Beware the sorcerer's minions in the tower who stand in the way. Players kick the orbs to take enemies out or to break down walls. They must overcome the obstacles and place the orbs on their respective tiles. Chew Man Fu also features the two-player Kick Ball minigame, as well as an Edit Mode for creating unique stages. The fun is endless.

I think if there was a way to offload them onto a computer via Wifi, USB, or some hard drive attachment, then we could definately get Saturn games...
It really isn't too big of a technological hurdle, Sega and Nintendo just have to want to do it. I could see them being $12-$15 but I think they would still sell pretty good because there are a ton of people who didn't have a Saturn who would want to play the better games...I guess it all comes down to if it would be cost effective. Right now, I doubt it because an emulator might still be hard to develop and the games would need more work than other platforms...That being said, Xbox Live is getting Ikaruga which was on the Saturn and GC and is being sold for relatively cheap, so it could be possible on the Wii.

Elevator Action (NES®, 1-2 players, 500 Wii Points): This is a multidirectional, scroll-type spy-action game that is a blast from the past. Control a spy and sneak alone into a building to steal the secret papers hidden there. Use a pistol, kicks, an elevator and even the lights to take out the building's guards. The gun-fighting action is full of thrills. Players will need speed and timing to get on the elevators, move between floors, steal the secret papers and escape from the basement parking lot.
Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts™ (Super NES®, 1 player, 800 Wii Points): The third game in the legendary Ghosts 'n Goblins series of video games, Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts follows Arthur in another quest to rescue the princess, his fair maiden and damsel in distress at large. Players take control of Arthur and defeat the creatures of the night to save the day once more. Discover what glory awaits those brave enough to take on the armies of Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts.
Sword of Vermilion™ (Sega Genesis, 1 player, 800 Wii Points): Sword of Vermilion is about the role of Erik's son, who takes on a quest of revenge to defeat Tsarkon and free the world of Vermilion from evil. In the town of Excalabria, the people went about their business and tended to the fields. One day, vicious fighting broke out everywhere as the army of Cartahena, led by the wizard-king Tsarkon, swarmed all over the town. The townsmen were overwhelmed. The castle of King Erik V collapsed. Erik summoned his bravest, strongest and most faithful warrior, Blade, and gave him his infant son and an ancient family heirloom, the ring of wisdom. He ordered Blade to save himself and the child while the castle burned. Blade traveled to a small village named Wyclif, where he settled down and raised the child as his own son. Eighteen years later, the son of Erik begins his quest. Save the world of Vermilion and fulfill the prophecy of the Malaga fortune-tellers!

I don't think anyone ever came up with a good (or even "effective") Saturn emulator because no one could grasp the twin SH-4 processor design enough to get a working emulator. Then again, it's been years since I looked, so who knows.
I would imagine that if one were available and working, you'd need discs to play to go along with it, ala Bleem on the PC for Playstation games.
That being said, Xbox Live is getting Ikaruga which was on the Saturn and GC and is being sold for relatively cheap, so it could be possible on the Wii.
Ikaruga was on the Dreamcast, not the Saturn. :D
But the Saturn had a better shooter in Radiant Silvergun. :) (the Saturn was a shooter fan's paradise...sooooooo many good 2d shooters on the Saturn. Arcade perfect 2d fighters as well.)
Oh I miss my Saturn :(

Oh yeah you are right...I got Ikaruga and Radiant Silvergun confused...sorry...Both excellent games...
I hope Ikaruga GC prices drop after it is released for Xbos Live...$35+ is too rich for me but I want it pretty bad...
While I have noticed that you are right, all of the online projects to emulate Saturn have been messes (Bleem included), it might be a different story if Sega helps Nintendo get it going. They designed the original hardware and software so it should be easier for them...I don't see why they couldn't separate the audio and video and re-encode it into more manageable files since they have the masters...I wouldn't think the Wii would have a problem emulating the processor if Sega provided all of the design schematics and requirements but who knows...
I did "test out" Shining Force III on Bleem for PC last year but it was too buggy and the sound was too glitchy for me to play...Too bad...I wanted to try to get a translated version of Senarios 2 & 3 and play them on an emulator since Sega hated money so bad they wouldn't port them...
I think the real problem is not engineering but marketing...It probably would take more effort to get Saturn games onto the Wii than other consoles and why would Nintendo/Sega put any effort out or take a risk when they have garaunteed money with little or no investment elseware...Heck Nintendo can cut a deal with Atari and sell 2600 or 7800 games for $5 a piece (highway robbery). Or they can just start adding older Master System games...Or 3DO, CDi, Neo Geo, etc...
If they did get Saturn games working, I would buy Panzer Dragoon Saga, Shining Force III (all three senarios), Gaurdian Heroes, Radiant Silvergun, NiGHTS into Dreams and possibly Dragon Force and Virtua Fighter 2...

Man I love both but Ikaruga is just too frickin' hard man. :D
When I had the DC import, I think I made it to Level 6 as many times as I can count on one hand. RS I've beaten so many times I've lost count, but that's just because they let you keep your weapon's strenghts/power up progress every time you play.
I bet the GC Ikaruga prices will fall once it comes out on Live.
Hell I had a mint (with packaging) Gamecube broadband adapter I was expecting to get $50-$60 for two months ago. How much did I get? $15. Value went down since the Wii came out with built-in WiFi. :o

All I've heard about this game is from people here that it's ecchh. After actually reading the above, I think they're right. On the video-game narrative continuum, it seems to fall just above Chew Man Fu and far below, say, Dragon Warrior I. I remember all that time in elementary & middle school spent dreaming up games & plots, and our efforts were definitely better than this.
As I'm able to parse the described plot, it's like this: the evil king from Voltron leads his Colombian army to attack a country-town, like the Swiss into Liechtenstein; the manly-sounding Erik V gets schooled; Wesley Snipes saves his son, and both (Fugees in their own way?) seek shelter with Wyclef Jean; the kid grows into less of a kid, and goes to fulfill the prophecy of Spanish gypsies.
Mmm, smells like a must-download tonight!

If you ignore the whip they are very similar with Capcom cartoony graphics replacing Konomi graphics. So what, you shoot swords etc. in Super Ghouls...It still isn't really a shooter like Contra...I would imagine that at least 8/10 would place Castlevania over any Ghouls 'n Ghosts game...
It is almost as if Capcom saw Konomi's success with Castlevania and Contra and decided to make their own version with Capcom style graphics. Maybe this isn't how it went down but it seems like it might have.
It is a decent game but I would get Gunstar or Contra III and SCIV instead...
Capcom this is a good start, but if you are listening give us what we really want...Mega Man 2, 3, Ducktales, and Chip 'n Dale...Oh and freaking Street Fighter II Turbo or Super Street Fighter II, and Okami Wii!
Super Metroid is the Babomb! It is hard but super cool! Release it soon Big N!

I personally like Gn'G much better than Contra and GH, but I liked both Castlevanias on the DS better than Gn'G. :) I could never get into the early CV's, because like early Mega Mans the controls were very limiting. I've beaten both, but I 'own' SGnG. I've beaten that game so many times I've lost count. I'd sit there and beat it repeatedly in one sitting because the game was that good.
GnG on the other hand...I remember beating it back in the day, but the last time I played it was on the Saturn Capcom Collection. I got to like level 5 and played that one level for about 2 hours before I gave up before I broke the controller by chucking it at the tv (which would probably consequently break the tv as well).

I agree for the most part. However, I think my skills have degraded a bit, too, or I just play in a more haphazard fashion (e.g. I'll sometimes plow through minor enemies if I know I can take it, just to get on with the game), because I heard some people going on about how easy Twilight Princess is (something along the lines of completing the game without even having to use a fairy), and I've died at least a few times, and come up against some stumper puzzles. :)

Actually you could on the SNES version when it was on the Snes, so i'm not sure what's going on in the VC version.
Also Ghost & Goblins was the first game. Ghouls & Ghosts was it's sequel.

Yep, I know Ghost came before Ghouls and that the SNES has some purdy graphics. I personally didn't like Ghost that much on the NES, so I'm always thinking Ghouls when I write Gn'G. :)
Why whould they take out just that aspect of the gameplay, when the VC version is the SNES ROM, just emulated?
I did a search, and this peep (73 SUPER GHOULS 'N GHOSTS (Capcom, October 1991) (http://ryangenno.tripod.com/sub_pages/SuperNreviewsN-S.htm) mentions you can't shoot up or down on the SNES version of SGn'G.
The SNES version isn't an arcade port like the Genisis, it's kind of its own thing, so the weopons all vary a bit, which definitely makes up for the fact one can't shoot upward, nor even downward. The double jump is also new to this version.
Anyway, I like this game quite a bit. It's every bit as fun as I recall and I'm actually quite happy that it's something slightly different. It was jut a bit of a suprise, since I thought it would be the exact same game, but better graphics. :)

No problem. Too many games, too many things to keep track of. My memory on many occasions has been skewed. :)
Until I read that guy's comment, I was thinking that double jump was part of the other ports. :o

I finally got the Wii lan adapter and bought some vc games. R-type, R-type 3, SMB, and MB. Mario Brothers was a total waste of 500 points. I even remembered not liking it very much back on the nes, but wanted a game that was easy (for my gf) and that could be played by 2 simultaneously using 2 wii remotes (no classic controller in my area yet and own only 1 gc controller now). Boy was I whacked. I had forgotten that Mario could be killed even when jumping on enemies! Plus the jumping control and responsiveness is horrible compared to SMB.
I'm quite satisfied with R-type, though my firing thumb hurt after 10 minutes and after several days I'm still trying to beat the third level. Just discovered rapid fire which is making a world of difference.
R-type 3 looks better from a technical standpoint and has bigger bosses, but I like the original R-type better. RT3 throws in too many visually confusing effects, especially in the first few stages, though overall it seems easier so far than R-type.
If I hadn't wasted the 500 pts on MB, then I'd have 900 left right now to spend on one of the 800 point games such as Castlevania 4, GnG, Super Mario World or Contra III. As it stands there's nothing I can buy with 400 points so I'm probably going to buy another 1000 points (bought 3000 so far) so I can buy one of the above plus a 600 pointer such as Bonk's Adventure.
I was planning to get Mariokark 64, but from what I've read in reviews, the graphics aren't emulated very well on the VC, so I'll pass on that.
I've found the web browser to be very good. I could navigate to gamespot and read the Zelda TP review but not watch the video review. However I was able to go to google video and watch videos with no problems whatsoever (in higher quality than on a 900mhz g3 ibook) and add two movies to my queue in Netflix.c0m. My only real gripes with the browser is that it should support 720p, have more keys on the wiimote mapped to commonly used browser functions (such as a 'return' or 'enter' key), and have more shortcuts for domain names (e.g. .edu, .gov, etc). Webpages look good in 480p, but I often need to zoom in using the + key on the wiimote just to be able to see certain little html buttons (such as 'google search').

I haven't checked Target or Walmart since buying the Wii console itself, so my bag if it turns out that those are the stores currently carrying the CC.

Oh right, I finally got mine in Target, I've seen them there since. The Fenway Bestbuy had a ton once when i was where, but their games section always seems really limited. What did IGN exactly say about it? I'll see if I can emulate the problem and clarify.
Here are some IGN snippets:
There's no arguing that Mario Kart 64 was an influential game, played and enjoyed by millions over the past 10 years. So the issue at hand becomes how the design has held up over that decade, and HOW PROPERLY IT'S BEEN RE-PRESENTED HERE ON THE WII'S VIRTUAL CONSOLE. THAT VERDICT? UNFAVORABLE
.......
....
..
.
Sadly, that's not the only issue with THIS VIRTUAL CONSOLE Kart. THE GAME LOOKS BAD. Out-of-place odd. You may have noticed that the graphics of Super Mario 64 got a considerable upgrade in the leap to the Wii, its 3D environments rendered more crisply, cleanly and vibrantly than ever before. But you may have also noticed that the 2D elements in that title stood out from the rest of the world – the flattened trees, the HUD icons showing Mario's life total and energy level. IT WAS PLAINLY PERCEPTIBLE, BUT IT WASN'T THAT BIG OF AN ISSUE THERE. IT IS HERE.
..........
..
.
MOST OF MARIOKART 64 is presented in 2D, including the characters themselves. They're flat, simple sprites. Two-dimensional drivers in a three-dimensional world, and it's OFF-PUTTING. Playing a game intended for lower resolutions and decade-old televisions on newer sets with progressive scan is weird, as there's a STARK CONTRAST BETWEEN YOUR RACER AND THE RACETRACK. The 3D elements look great – crisp and clean, just like Super Mario 64. But the 2D elements stand out, appearing flat, JAGGED AND ALL-AROUND UGLY. It's not a pretty sight.
Closing Comments
If you never owned an original Kart cartridge, consider this download. But if you've still got the old N64, four dust-covered controllers and the game itself sitting in a closet somewhere, do some digging. This re-release comes close to capturing the full spirit of the original version, but PLAYING IT OLD-SCHOOL REMAINS SUPERIOR.
[end of IGN quotation]
Gamespot gave it a lower rating and had harsh things to say about gameplay (i.e. powersliding a slippery mess compared to later version), though to be fair, their comments were directed at both the original 64 version as well as the VC emulated one.

Oh right, so the problem is the Wii displays it too well? haha. I see what they mean, everything is very sharp. If I didn't read any of these reviews I'd have never thought it was too sharp :) I thought they were going to say something about mad overlaying graphics appearing left right and centre! Or have the flickery texture issue in Mario 64 (probably in Zelda too). Ah well.
Powersliding has always been hard in MK64. Controls nowhere near as well as MKDS.

He he, IGN. They're pretty dense about some things. :)
Not even the great SNES MK compares to MKDS IMO. ~i~
When I was looking for a LCDTV for my office, I recall hearing the sales peep at one of the stores telling an elderly couple that HDTVs were sharper, but at the same time was showing them LCDTVs that were plugged in via composite cables displaying a standard broadcast. So of course everything was fuzzy and just looked like comlpete crap. They had a complete look of confusion on their faces. :)

The convenience of having all my games on one console, that can plug into any TV and supports 8 controllers, is why I really like the VC and why I'll buy games I still own, or have in the past.

Tecmo Bowl™ (NES®, 1-2 players, 500 Wii Points): Tecmo Bowl pits the player versus the computer in 11-game, single-elimination playoff action. Players also can go head-to-head with a human opponent in action or coach mode. The player can select from 12 teams. On offense there are usually two run and two pass plays to choose from. The player takes control of the quarterback before the snap and then either hands off to the running back or works through his receiver progression from the top to the bottom of the screen. Defense consists of trying to guess which offensive play the opponent will select and then taking control of one of the defensive players before the snap. A very simple power-meter system is used for kicking field goals, extra points and punts.

He is using energy from the magma flowing under the volcano to power his Veg-O-Fortress. He has the power to transform helpless animals into robots. Sonic the Hedgehog must take down this fortress to free the enslaved animals. The only way to make that happen is to trigger an eruption in the volcano it's built on. Sonic knows this can be done by removing the Chaos Emeralds that keep the volcano stable. Dr. Eggman, however, is also aware of the fragile relationship that exists between the emeralds and the mountain, and he's set up an elaborate Pinball Defense System to make sure the precious jewels don't go anywhere.

The higher the level is, the harder the scenario. Because each scenario is independent, players can choose to start the game from any scenario other than the final one. Players defeat monsters in each dungeon to gain experience while searching for the "key" that opens the door to the room with the boss. They buy equipment at the shop, team up with characters and defeat the boss to clear a scenario. Players must conquer all 21 scenarios from levels 1 through 5 to obtain passwords. WII-KLY UPDATE: THREE NEW CLASSIC GAMES ANNOUNCED FOR WII SHOP CHANNEL
March 12, 2007
Today Nintendo adds three new classic games to the popular Wii™ video game system's Wii Shop Channel. The games go live at 9 a.m. Pacific time. Nintendo adds new games to the channel every Monday. Wii owners with a high-speed Internet connection can redeem Wii Points™ to download the games. Wii Points can be purchased in the Wii Shop Channel or at retail outlets. This week's new games are:

"Smooth-scrolling 3D play"
That's a smooth description, cleverly worded so as to avoid false representation. Better might have been, "Was considered in its day to feature smooth-scrolling 3D-style play."
Does anyone know how to enable password entry in VC R-Type? I ask because gamefaqs (under Wii-->R-type) lists a code under 'cheats' that supposedly enables 'hard mode'.
Last night (after finally beating level 4 in VC), I played R-type on my powerbook (in a very small window) using the Sega Master System emulator 'SMS Plus', and noticed that there were many more red pellet bullets, even on level 1 (e.g. fired at one's ship while inside the large rotating structure halfwau through). In addition, the level 1 boss fight (still laughably easy) was different from the VC version in that the screen continued to scroll to the right (bringing one's ship ever closer to the boss), while engaging the beast, instead of the scrolling ceasing once the fight had begun (latter the case in VC/Turbo GFX version).
I'm also trying to recall whether my Amiga version (the one with which I fell in love) was harder.
I really love R-Type, including the VC version!
(even though I hate these things!)

I will probably wait a while and get it if Super doesn't come out in a year or so...I really don't have time to play it anyway.
The games I have beat on my Wii so far include: Zelda TP, Wario Ware Smooth Moves, Super Castlevania IV, Kirby's Adventure, Gunstar Heroes.
I'm playing Fire Emblem PoR and Ikaruga  ! and hope to beat them soon...
I can't seem to beat Excite Truck despite having it for a while now...I have S ratings in all of the races through platinum but then it gets really hard...I rented a bunch of other games but didn't have them long enough to beat them...
This is why I love the Wii, I can play games from 5 generations of consoles all in one place! It is phenominal...My friend pointed out that I could have modded an Xbox and put some ROMs on it but I really try to be legal as much as possible and to be honest the VC isn't really that overpriced...
I could get an original NES from a local store here but they are $90! (and thats just 1 console) and the games for NES usually aren't much cheaper than $5, especially if they were popular...As I said before, if they figured out a way to emulate Saturn on Wii (even with a HD attachement) it would be phenominal. The consoles only cost $50 or so but the games can be as much as $200. I'm looking at you, Radiant Silvergun!

I've decided on Super G'nG.
Based on reviews, CV4 is more like the early CV games, but with a more versatile whip mechanic and quality music composition for which the franchise is known. Unlike the later CV's, level progression is purportedly linear and the whip is the main weapon. I'll probably end up getting it, though part of me thinks, "life's too short to be playing a retro CV when I still haven't played CV:POR on the DS." 8 bucks may be cheaper than $35, but such games are only rentals to begin with, possibly making a rental POR a much better deal, especially with gamefly and the like being so affordable.

It is already looking better than GC with Fire Emblem, DQ Swords, Final Fantasy CC etc. already coming out...I'm gonna take a wild guess and say its Golden Sun or Shining Force IV for no particular reason other than that is what I would want. I guess it could be the new Kid Icarus or a new one in th Mother series though... I doubt it is SMG because we already know about it. What would the secret be then?

That'd a pretty lame exclusive seeing as everyone has known about it for a year.
I think you're misreading what exclusive means. They're just saying that they will have an "exclusive" on developer interviews, official screenshots, etc. in their next issue. This is pretty standard for a magazine to promote "exclusives" on an upcoming title that everyone knows about.
There's very little chance of releasing a game (especially one based on an existing franchise) that nobody knows about.
While I wouldn't mind seeing the games that others have mentioned, I'm going to stick with SMG as my guess.

I think you're misreading. If it was SMG, they'd put that, not hint at an un-named game. They had the exclusive on BWii, and they did a similar thing. I can assure you it's not SMG.

Battalion Wars 2 for Wii. There was a bit of a brouhaha over Nintendo Magazine's "exclusive" coverage of that game too because it had been announced at Leipzig.

The linear part about CV is why I'm having troubles getting into it. It's really just a platformer compared to the later DS versions. You pickup items that were earned upgrades in the DS versions, and if you die they're gone. Blah. Just need to get past my expectations, since I'm basing them on a much newer game, which isn't fair, and play this one through.
CV:PoR is an awesome game. It takes longer to get into than CV: DS and I was bummed that the sol-collecting thing wasn't present, but the game has its own thing going for it, which is similar to the first one. It's well worth the time and money.

IT took a while to grow on me too. I'd easily put C: DS as the top platformer ever, so you can imagine my dissapointment with PoR. But... I realised a few hours into PoR that no game is going to overtake DS for a long time so I might as well enjoy this.
The only game I can imagine competing would be a Metroid game where you start off without a suit (seeing this look is about to be hugely popularised with Smash Bros Brawl) and you slowly build up to the godlike powers of a near invincible Chozo suit. hell... destroy canon and stick in multiple suits about 50% into the game, giving the player an option of how the rest of the game will play? World map would have to be utterly massive. No needless online components.

I think they're being nice with Zelda VC games because of Twilight Princess. Mario Galaxy? Expect Yoshi's Island, Mario 2, 3 etc. Metroid Prime: Corruption? Expect Metroid 1 and Super Metroid.
Personally, I think we're seeing so many Zelda games because they already got 4 out of 5 working on GC hardware for the Collector's Edition - must be much less work to port over to VC after that. I've long wondered if that disc was either test-bed or inspiration for the VC code.
Still, there's something to the VC-releases-linked-to-Wii-releases idea. Probably fortuitous with Zelda, but wouldn't be surprised to see more of this in the future.

CV-DS was my favorite platformer on the DS, though I never played it quite to the end. Music in my head would not cease after playing it a few hours a day for several weeks straight. Now I'm having the same problem with R-type.
After watching CV4 on yootube, I've decided to pass for the time being in favor of Super G'nG and possibly Donkey Kong Country. Those games seem to offer the best combination of retro appeal and dynamic gameplay. Likewise I'm going to pass on Gunstar heroes (gameplay seems hectic yet bland based on some videos) and Contra III.
Does anyone have any reliable info for upcoming VC releases? And what's this about the VC having 'free downloads for 1st party"? (Jimmi mentioned that with a 'woot!') Will that be Nintendo games, or free expansions to purchased vc/wii games, and if so, will the free games be the same ones currently being offered now, or the B-sides that noone wanted badly enough to purchase?

Nobody really knows. Sega lists some release dates, though those generally changes. There's people on some forum 'hack' the Wii SHop channel to see what is waiting in the wings.

Vectorman, eh. I've played it a few times on the Sonic collection disc for Cube.
I'm hoping that Sega brings Buck Rogers (http://www.amazon.com/Electronic-Arts-Buck-Rogers/dp/B00002SUKE) to the VC. This game looked like cheese, but was one of my favorite games on the Genisis. It had it all. :)

Yeah, DS was just amazing. PoR in its own respect is by far one of hte better games I've played and I'm so glad I devoted the time to appreciate it. But I feel it should have been released/made prior to DS.
Huge games that have lots to do and clear direction make me happy. :) I've never played a Metroid side-scroller to the end, let alone to level 2. :o I'm going to remedy this atrocity on my part when they make them available for VC.

Because ROMs are illegal?
Because I can be sat on a sofa, press the Power button on the Wii remote and within 10 seconds I'm playing the best classic games going, cheaper than buying them from a shop (as it has been explained a million times before). If Apple has taught me anything it's that convenience is a force to be reckoned with.
Why would it make you pissed off? No game is ever going to be as good as Mario World, Mario Kart 64 is still one of the best kart racers going, Ocarina of Time. It's about overall quality and these games ooze it.

Right now the DS is so good that it kind of makes the Wii look bad in comparison.
New Super Mario Brothers DS vs. Super Mario Brothers/Mario World in VC
Meteos and Gunpey (for puzzlers) vs. Columns in the VC
Don't get me wrong, I am enjoying the VC, but more in the way of being grudgingly eaten-out of my quarters and less in a happy value-minded DS way.
The VC model could benefit from an overhaul a la XBLA.
For example, Joust in XBLA can be played co-op, both locally and remotely (if memory serves. sold my 360 one year ago this month), has the option of original graphics or a more refined version (subtle improvement but better for larger tv's), has full leaderboard support (did, at least), and achievements which add a new dimension of enjoyment to some otherwise repetitive games. Robotron 2084 was similar in my experience (e.g. co-op, NO death until stage X achievement, etc). Right now XBLA is more of a 'wii play' whereas the VC is mostly a 'mii play' with few exceptions.

The DS definitely has much going for it; Magical Starsign is great! :) But compared to the Wii at 5 months, the DS didn't have crap. ;) I was relying on my GBA games and gnawing away at the few DS games that were OK to play.
So if the Wii is this great now, chances are it will explode into game glory later this year, just like the DS did not even a year later. Easy development and new ways to play seem to bring out the best in developers. :)
The DS only needed Mario Kart DS to get its online components going, so I'm assuming more options will be made available for the VC as soon as that aspect is up and running. I would hope that a service that's not free, like XBLA would offer a bit more, since you have to pay a subscription just to enter. ;)

Right. What Nintendo needs to do is herd some guys into a room, Psygnosis style (man, what those guys could do with 7.16MHZ!), with all the Coke they need and not let them come out until they've produced a fully optimized 3d engine in assembler. More innovative Wiimote play too, but that goes without saying.

The subscription is really nominal. $8 for 1 month (most expensive scenario) of xbl considering Mario Brothers, a terrible game, alone costs $5 on the Wii and at least in XBL one doesn't have to mute the volume to avoiding hearing K-Mart department store music while 'shopping'. Plus, all the XBL games are playable as demos whereas the Wii ship doesn't even provide as much as full-screen stills to prospective buyers (at least one MR member regretted wasted points taking a gamble on "Sword of Vermillion"

$8 a month is a SNES game.
The XBLA games are only playable as demos, "if" you have the Silver or Platinum membership.
Why would you even buy Mario Brothers? My friend did for his son, but personlly it's a game I've never really liked.
K-Mart music rocks, so I'm glad that hitting the mute button takes very little effort.
Full screen images would be great. I completely agree that they should offer something along this line.
I enjoyed Sword of Vermillion on the Genisis, even though it was more drudging than fun. I wouldn't buy it on the VC though.
Nintendo can only improve on the VC, but until that time I'll rely on my comp to do my research before buying a VC game. The only game I've bouht that I kind of regret, is Dungeon Expoler. But I'm hoping someday to play it with 5 friends and I'll probably be hoping for a really long time, since they're not interested.

There's hope of Japanese (http://www.nintendowiifanboy.com/2007/02/16/japanese-vc-games-in-the-us-not-entirely-dismissed/) VC games coming to the US market, but they would still be region locked.

New Super Mario Brothers DS vs. Super Mario Brothers/Mario World in VC
Sacrilege! Super Mario World is far superior to New Super Mario Bros. in every way. It is the second best 2D platformer ever, after SMB3...
Sorry had to get that out...
The other thing is, VC games cost $10 at most for N64 games...DS games cost around $35. DS games are more overpriced than VC games IMO...Not that I don't have a nice DS library, but it pains me to pay those prices for portable games.

Where are you buying $39 DS games? They retail $34.99 at most and Nintendo has a few at $29.99. The only $39.99 game I can think of was Final Fantasy III.
My hopes to see on VC soon: N64 Kirby and the SNES Kirby Super Star (cost me $70 back in the day... Be thankful for the normal $60 and $50 console and PC games you see these days, kids :) ). I was watching a trailer for the Kirby GameCube game that is canned (most likely coming for Wii). I totally forgot about those two Kirby games. Oh, I was all over Kirby's Adventure. That was my childhood NES game :D Disappointed that it took me 2 hours to beat it on the Wii... :o
Darn Final Fantasy games ruining DS game prices! I guess DS games (and even GBA games) could be cheaper since it's a handheld. But, they are on cartridges and those aren't ever cheap to begin with. If the handheld market was as large as the console market, I bet the systems and games could be cheaper, but I digress.

Must admit to having a soft spot for Kirby. Though I had never played a Kirby game before, Kirby Canvas Curse on the DS was the first game I bought for the DS that had me forget about my PSP (prior to that my MR game forum posts HAD concerned the latter. Meteos had been fun and compelling for its interface, but the game itself IMO wasn't as deep as Lumines) After playing through the admittedly short (but satisfying) Kirby adventure, I couldn't wait to play through again, so compelling was the interface/gameplay, artistic conception, and upbeat music. I'm just *barely* a kid at heart, and as well a bit anhedonic these days - so for a game thus themed to have drawn me and my people in to such an extent reflects extremely well on Nintendo and their people. Though I will likely need to hide it in certain walks of life, I'm not sure I'll ever be able to see a little pink ball again without getting all touchy-pokey. Scarred, in a way.
So if the Wii really is to be considered a 'DS 2.0', as someone on MR mused, I hope Nintendo designates Kirby CC as the official lineage master inspiring future incarnations on the Wii.

Or is it the possibility of further games because of new systems that everyone is so excited about?
Paul
I don't know either, but I've never played it, but I'm going to try it out. Sega's releasing lots of their old franchises for the Wii, from what I've read. :)
I've asked the same type of question about Halo 3. :) Halo was just OK in comparison to other FPS games I've played and H2 sucked IMO. But go figure, for others it's the best game they've ever played and they're excited about H3's release.
I'm excited about the possibility of Neo Geo and Satun VC games and I'm going to be redundent about it. :)

Nights was and has been completely over hyped since its release. As a saturn owner - it was more utter repetative tedium, and I was utterly disspointed with it. Never have understood why anyone has held this game up as somthing of a 'highlight' moment in gaming.

NiGHTS is a big deal because at the time it had some of the best graphics, sound, controls, and especially gameplay of any platformer out there. Like most platformers, its an easy game except when you try to master it. Basically, you have a set time to free as many Ideya (or whatever they are called...I forget) as you can by collecting blue chips. You fly around on rails and collect them. In order to get A ranks in levels you will probably find yourself repeating the level over and over again. You could call any SCHMUP or Pacman repetetive too but there are plenty of people obsessed with mastering them.
I just saw another rumor on Go Nintendo about the Wii getting a hard drive today so (as I said before) maybe NiGHTS isn't a sequel but the original coming to the VC.
If so, I am more excited about the prospect of finally getting to beat Shining Force 3, and play Dragon Force and Panzer Dragoon Saga. I don't expect many to be excited though because they don't see a point in playing old game like some of us do.

Kind of goes agains the arguements most folks have when they're Wii fans :D
It did have that...at the time. To me the game doesn't offer as much as say Mario 3, original Zelda, etc...so that's why I'm ho hum about it. The length of this thread will show you that there are loads of folks interested in playing old games....some are more discerning than others (not saying you are less discerning by any means)...personally NiGHTS has no old love from me...but some of the other games you mention are exciting prospects...

I was just trying to point out why it was popular at the time. I'm sure some of my other posts make it seem like I care nothing for modern graphics, sound, AI, etc. That isn't completely the truth. I love them but not at the expense of the most important thing.... Gameplay. Also, I'm a big believer that Art Direction is far more important that screen resolution.
Hopefully, Nintendo adds HD level graphics on their next console but right now most of the world doesn't have the HDTVs to take advantage of them anyway.
As I pointed out, NiGHTS has gameplay that could be very boring to some but for those that try to master it, it can be very addictive. I just got S ratings on all of the Platinum tracks in Excite Truck. Many would find this undertaking completely boring but I like the challange. The same might go for someone trying to get all of the star coins in NSMB etc...
In any case, there are a huge number of people who think that NiGHTS has better gameplay than any other game the Sonic team ever developed. Better than Ristar, Better than Sonic 1,2,3, Knuckles etc. Personally, it may be the best game developed by the Sonic team but it isn't the best game published by Sega or even on the Saturn IMO. It is in my top 10 Saturn games I would like to revisit but I'm not sure about top 5. There are quite a few good games for that system that nobody ever played because of its early demise....

I just don't see making a whole press release around this one game...seems kind of silly as there are other games a lot more worthy of an announcement like this...but maybe there's something more to it...I certainly hope so. Even adding the saturn to the VC line up is big but doesn't seem like organize a press event and have people wait for the announcement...but then again maybe news is kind of slow coming for Nintendo publications right now.
But then in the end it's all up to the person reading the story. To me I'd expect a press release for Simon's Quest :D

If/when it appears, curious to see if it has audio glitches like the GC version. Did it originally use the N64 expansion pak? If so, we could be seeing another "incomplete" VC title. Or, maybe they're taking extra time to fix it?

Over the last two weeks i bought Super G'nG, Donkey Kong Country, SMW. Prior to that I had only owned SMB, R-Type 1&3.
Even though I've only spent about 90 minutes total playing SMW (had never played it before except briefly on the DS) and haven't touched it in days, I still have the main music theme stuck in my head like mad! Having a similar problem with Super G'nG. Kind of reminds me of why i 'moved on' from classics such as these in the first place. All fun games though. For those of you with mates claiming that games - especially 3D ones - irritate theirs brains (e.g. 'driving response' to flashing lights, interlacing, dancing edges of images, etc), I thought I might share that, of all the games I've played on the wii so far, the only ones that my gf can tolerate looking at for any length of time are Wii Sports (except golf), R-Type 1 (not 3), original SMB (NOT SMB3 - she says the 'edges dance' too much, even when sitting 6+ feet from a 26" Sony XBR w/ 480p), and Super G'nG (btw- 'most bang for the buck' in her opinion, even though she can't even get past the second flaming foe).
I was surprised to find that DKC was the worst offender and that surprisingly she could tolerate looking at Zelda TP. If anyone else is up for discussing this topic or a similar one (I myself get headaches with some of these games), I'm up for starting a new thread.
Just to contribute something appropriate for this thread, I should add that all the VC games I mentioned seem to be emulated 99% faithfully (including SNES slowdown in G'nG), they all look great even on the TV I mentioned, and the SNES ones even control well (except for SMW - button layout, etc) with the Gamecube controller. STILL can't find a damn classic controller anywhere and have been checking 3 different local ebgames and one bestbuy almost every other day, plus target twice a week.

Thanks for the tip. I've been trying to minimize online shopping, having had to keep track of so many small shipments to my apartment building since christmas, everything from DVD's to video cables, that a cash deal for one of those controllers would maximize the pleasure it would give. However my local search for a cash deal constitutes false economy given how much time I've wasted going from store to store, so I may bite the bullet and order a controller from one of the places you mentioned.
Question: How much better is the d-pad on the classic controller compared to that on the Gamecube controller? Does it seem to have a softer touch, so to speak, in that finer control in R-type is possible (e.g. avoiding having the ship graze a boss, etc.)? So far my impression is that the Wiimote d-pad is a little better than that on the Gamecube controller for minute adjustments, but the Wiimote can't be used for SNES games.

I'm enjoying SG'nG qutie a bit, but a little part of me is missing the Gensis/arcade version. The SNES version seemed to add spice where it wasn't needed, while taking out some of the flavor that made G'nG one of my favorites. R-Type 3 is way too spicy. I'm happy with the purchase, but the first is the king.
I noticed the same thing about the emulation. Street Fighter 2 slows down just as I recall it did on my SNES, where as the Genisis games were always fast, but with graphic flickering/tearing.
My LCDTV gives me a headache sometimes, do to its image bastardizing technology, AKA HorridDTV. :o

Yesterday I checked two different Best Buys in the Boston area, 3 ebgames, 3 Targets (everett, somerville, and one other), and the Walmart in Lynn. I visited several of the above and called the others around lunchtime.
No one had a single classic controller. One of the Target operators said at first that they had one, but then it turned out she had misheard what I said, hearing "classic stroller" (!?). No kidding! I'm sure if I had said "Nintendo Wii" first, this could have been avoided, but every time I mentioned Wii at all to any store operator (right before following up with "classic controller"), I got a flat out "we have no wiis" from people who didn't understand that I was looking for an accessory and not the console.

Meh...
The last game I got on VC was OoT...
I have been underwhelmed by the VC lately.
Elevator Action-Looks like a completely crappy game.
Sword of Vermilion- Crappy compared to the RPGs that will be out in the future.
Double Dungeons-Looks really crappy
Sonic Spinball-Meh
Beyond Oasis-Looks good but I already have the original Zelda and Alttp...
Tecmo Bowl Tecmo-I probably should have gotten but was annoyed by no player names.
Excitebike-I don't really like to buy old racing or fighting games.
With the exception of Street Fighter 2 Turbo, Mortal Kombat 2, and maybe Rad Racer.
Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts-Good but too hard.
Splatterhouse-I think the main appeal of this was that it was one of the rare violent games back in the day...doesn't look too good to me.
Romance of the Three Kingdoms IV: Wall of Fire-Looks Ok but I am waiting for an SRPG to come out. I like them better than pure strategy...
I'm sure some people will want every one of these games but they just aren't my cup of tea. Out of the games that should be upcoming (soon hopefully) I am waiting for:
Castlevania
Punch-Out!!
Zelda II: The Adventure of Link
Super Mario Bros. 3
Kirby Super Star
Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars
Super Metroid
Vectorman (maybe)
I really hope Capcom gets off their a** and puts Megaman 2 on there (I'm not getting the GC collection because that is the only game I really want) and tries to get the Disney NES games (Ducktales, Chip n' Dale etc.) on there. I'm sure Disney doesn't hate money.

I just bought Super Castlevania 4 for the VC over the weekend and am really pleased. Even though i had already played it for a few hours on an snes emulator on the Powerbook in my sig, I wasn't prepared for just what a difference even the GC controller makes. Actions such as flailing the whip around to fend off bats and grab hard to reach swing points, jumping down on a enemy and whipping diagonally down while descending upon him/her/it, and being able to chuck projectiles so easily using R (instead of using a third finger on my left hand on the keyboard) is a major selling point for me.
On the other hand, the purely platform elements of SCV4 are easier for me using the keyboard - this might have something to do with my having grown up playing games such as loadrunner and jumpman exclusively on an original IBM PC keyboard - but once the game reaches the point where combat and platforming challenges are clustered in the same portion of the screen (e.g. in level 4 where one is swinging while avoiding thrown bones and such) the GC controller is the clear winner. I did notice that, with the keyboard, it was easier to avoid the typical stupid platforming mistakes such as letting loose from a swing at the right time, only to accidentally nudge a but too far from the landing platform, once 'safely' upon it.
Another thing I was not prepared for was just how much better this game looks in 480p on my 26" Sony XBR TV compared to the 12" screen on the powerbook. Considering how certain games (e.g. SMW and DKC) had looked better on a smaller screen, I had expected the blocky sprites to look much blockier when blown up, but the XBR's built in scaler managed to render SCV4 images such that they appeared very 'solid' and deeply color saturated without the usual 'dancing edges'' that even my gf complains about in some other VC games. Even the sound fx seemed more impressive than I remember ever hearing from an SNES game back in the day. For example, the reverbant decay of the groans uttered by whipped ghouls popping up in the graveyard is emulated so well - and possibly enhanced by the various licenced DSP technologies in my TV - that it helps me forget that I'm playing an ages old game on an emulator, especially when the music is so good.
Oh and I forgot to mention that what pleases me the most is SCV4's balanced and progressive difficulty, compared to Super G'nG in which I still haven't been able to beat the first level (getting close though). I like how in SCV4 one goes back to the beginning of a sub-level (e.g. 4-1, 4-2,etc) when dying, but throws you back to the beginning of the level (say back to 4-1 when dying on 4-3) once continuing after all lives are lost. Though still frustrating at times to be sure, it beats the game design of Super G'nG IMO by encouraging longer play sessions, though the latter surely has more 'bang for the buck' in short gaming spurts. So in short, get SCV4 if you like to survive for a while and whip a bunch of things (at least early in the game) before getting whipped.
I know, the run on....

The GC controller's placement of its d-pad contributed to my skin being ripped of my thumb last year. That was a very painful Capcom vs SNK session.
I'm going to play Castlevania 4 later this year and plan on buying all of the other Castlevanias when made available. C:PoR is still too fresh in my memory and I was taken back a bit that C4 was a more a platformer in comparison.
Is it me, or is SG'nG harder than G'nG? I'm used to the nonstop action, but it took me about 2 hours to get to the first boss. I'm probably just getting old.

Man, you make a tempting case for SCIV... I had it for my SNES, and am really on the fence for the VC. I'm a Castlevania junkie, or at least I was one through the SNES version, never had a PSone so I missed out and kind of lost track of the series for awhile.
The one thing sort of holding me back is that I remember SCIV being an easy game back in the day. Of course I had already beaten Castlevanias I-III repeatedly, and gotten all but one ending on III (never could beat the doppleganger without one of the other characters). Since the March releases thus far have not been anything I must have SCIV is looking really tempting for my $10/month self imposed limit on the VC.
I'll see what tonight holds... I should probably make myself finish of Twilight Princess first but that's at least a month off... but sometimes I just need my Castlevania fix. Had they released the original on Monday I probably would have gotten I & IV (little left over from Jan/Feb 1000 point allotments).
The Wii is becoming a money sink... of course it has introduced discipline in going out to lunch so I'm actually saving more than $10/month on that...

Stop the insanity TheGimp, put down the GC controller! Please order this (http://www.amazon.com/Nintendo-Wii-Classic-Controller/dp/B000IN0BSU/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1/102-7905312-9012104?ie=UTF8&s=videogames&qid=1174936552&sr=8-1) online. :)
The GC controller's placement of its d-pad contributed to my skin being ripped of my thumb last year. That was a very painful Capcom vs SNK session.

Woot! Just found a CC (three actually, but bought just one for now) at the mini Circuit City (has another word in the name, like 'express') at the Cambridgeside Galleria (Boston area).
Now I'm tempted to get something like SM64 since I never played it more than about 20% through back when I had a 64, and didn't like the controls on the DS version so I sold that. The button layout on the CC is awesome, almost makes me want to play SF2 so I can give my friends a good roundhouse kick with Ryu, but I'll hold off for a while to see if a better SF incarnation appears on the VC (damn that corporate greed and my consumer appetite). For now I've still got SMW to enjoy, having saved most of it until a CC was found.
Also, let's hope that the CC helps me avoid falling off the ledges in SCV4 so much after letting go from a swing, and grazing certain objects with my ship in R-Type.

Fingers crossed for this one. I just really wish I had the opportunity to play the original, might pick up a Saturn off eBay actually... Still need one!

Awesome!! I don't know about the ship grazing thing in R-Type, that game is just hard, but the CC is sooooo much better for that game than the GC controller. :)
I forgot my arcade sticks last month when going to my friends to play SF2 and the CC controllers kept us playing for hours. :) I recommend some real sticks for that game, but the the CC is hands down the best pad I've used for it. I soooo hope to see more Wii fighting games. The Cube really got the shaft.

My friend has a spare Saturn. It's his favorite console, so bought one for backup. :)
I'll wait for the Wii version and hopefully a Saturn VC version.

On the first floor. I believe the name on the store front was "Iris Stores" with a little "Circuit City Express" inside a white circle, but now that I think of it, that may be due to the fact that there WAS a Circuit City Express in that same slot that got bought out or merged or something. I just looked at the receipt and it says, "Iris Stores", so I guess I was mistaken. Anyway, they had a total of three classic controllers for anyone on MR in the Boston area who still hasn't found one yet. The store is located about halfway along on the first floor, near the Apple Store as a matter of fact. Also had Wii steering wheels, Wii tennis racket and golf club plastic extensions (lame looking crap IMO), Wii glove, and Wii point cards (2 of those left).
I've now played SCV4, R-Type, and SMW using the CC and have found it to be a major improvement for SMW especially. The D-pad and the two buttons used for SCV4 still need breaking in, as they feel a bit stiff compared to the GC controller which I bought pre-owned from Ebgames. Even so, it's still an improvement but ironically I seem to be falling off ledges MORE and not less than with the GCC, yet my hands were comfortable enough during the last play sessions that I perservered long enough to finally make it to the level 3 boss (the two animal skulls on long bony spines).

Go Nintendo said these games are coming soon to the VC today!
Street Fighter II Turbo is probably one of the most classic fighting games out there.
If you don't buy Shining Force and own a Wii you are wrong! In the US territory, it defined the SRPG genre...I know Fire Emblem was first but we didn't get that here in the US until the GBA ones...
Final Fight is good too! Anybody who bought the World Warrior version of Street Fighter II has to be feeling like an a** now!
Shining Force looks like it was announced for the VC but I couldn't read the linked game site (http://gamefront.de/) because it is in German. The other two were put on the ESRB list.

SF2 :( I'd love for Capcom to bring us SFA3. After playing it on my GBA it's very hard to go back to anything SF2.
Cept the anime film :)

BLASPHEMY!!!
Street Fighter is Street Fighter regardless of the version. I love SF2A just as much SF2, or SF2T, or even SNK vs Capcom. All you need is some good arcade sticks like me, not some horrid GBA pad and the game is king. I couldn't even play SF2A on the GBA, becaue the controls were so awkaward. :)
I certainly hope for SF2A Wii and will buy it the day it's released, but SF2T is finally coming!!! :D
I'm a collector. :o

My Nintendo Power came in today and it has a Zelda:OoT strategy guide. I 'm going to buy the VC version of OoT, so I can play it on the Classic Controller.
Now I must rant about non CRT HDTVs in general.
I'm finally fed up with my HORRID Samsung LCDTV!!! Thankfully it makes an excellent computer monitor. CRTs looks 100 fold better when it comes to colors and so on. I like the widescreen aspect, but even my little 14" TV here in my office looks vastly better than any HDTV I've played on thus fare. I live here in Southern California, so I have plenty HD loving friends. I just wish I could get a hold of an old plasma like my friend's 37" set. He bought it in 2000, or 2001. It's a Panosonic that displays at 852x480 (EDTV). He also has a brand new 62" 1080i plasma, which his PS3 is hooked up to. The old Panosonic looks better for most content, including DVDs. I would say this is because it displays at the optimal resolution for them. The PS3 looks great on the 62" of course, but that's about it.
Anyway, I said screw it to the widescreen and now I'm visually enjoying all of my VC and Wii games on a smaller, but clearly better looking CRT. Even the web and news channels look better at 480i. If HDTV CRT's weren't $500 and so huge, I would buy one for my office, but I have limited space on my spare desk.
If only there was a way I could get a better picture on my LCDTV? I have component cables.
