Stop the insanity TheGimp, put down the GC controller! Please order this (http://www.amazon.com/Nintendo-Wii-Classic-Controller/dp/B000IN0BSU/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1/102-7905312-9012104?ie=UTF8&s=videogames&qid=1174936552&sr=8-1) online. :)

The GC controller's placement of its d-pad contributed to my skin being ripped of my thumb last year. That was a very painful Capcom vs SNK session.

I'm going to play Castlevania 4 later this year and plan on buying all of the other Castlevanias when made available. C:PoR is still too fresh in my memory and I was taken back a bit that C4 was a more a platformer in comparison.

Is it me, or is SG'nG harder than G'nG? I'm used to the nonstop action, but it took me about 2 hours to get to the first boss. I'm probably just getting old.

Quoted for truth. Has anyone here ever used the GC controller for Super Mario World! Aargh, the pain!

I just wish I could get a hold of an old plasma like my friend's 37" set. He bought it in 2000, or 2001. It's a Panosonic that displays at 852x480 (EDTV).
<]=)

I got a 42" Panasonic ED plasma a couple of years ago. It has a superb picture. Unfortunately, the early HD adoptors are getting ripped IMO because there isn't enough 1080i/p content out there to justify it at the moment. By the time there is, I will have had my EDTV for 5 years and will get an HD for much cheaper (hopefully <$1000) and move the ED to the bedroom. I'm sure 1080p console games will get here but they aren't really here yet and I am on the downloadable content bandwagon so I could really care less about Blueray or HD-DVD. I have Verizon Fios which has HD channels but they certainly aren't in 1080...

Anyways, back to discussing VC games...

Nope, I'm still scarred from using it for SNK vs Capcom. :)

I'm sooo glad that they realized the d-pad should be to the left, not in some aukward lower-right position.

People that can't see the interpolation and compression on HD scare me. I figure they must be far-sighted or something. :)

I've been building trade-show demos for years now, which of course generaly end up on a HD set. This and all of my friends jumping on the HD bandwagon have helped me to stear clear of this work in progress. The only reason I bought one for my office, was because of space and the fact it would work as a spare monitor. CRTs have had over 60 years to evolve to their current state and it certainly shows, where as this migration to basically computer screens has been rough. Didn't they gather in the ninties, that TV playback on computer monitors looked like crap.

My first experience with BR was on my friend's 62" and it wasn't a H.264 version, so it looked just as bad as DVDs did on his Panasonic when he first bought it. Weird how history repeats itself. So I figure in about 6 years current HDs will look great.

I still want widescreen support for Zelda. :( Blah. Where can I find a Panosonic EDTV? :)

The screenshots in the VC are also way clearer now.

Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts is beautiful on me 14". :)

I get draw issues on Kirby NES, anyone else? The left part of the screen doesn't get tiled in properly. It's as if the function that removes the leaving tiles to clear up memory is one off.

I LOVE my Samsung 32 inch CRT HDTV for the reason you hate the LCD. I'm so glad I went with a "slim fit" (but horribly heavy) CRT over the LCD...not only did I get mine for less than 500 USD but it shows non HD stuff really well and the blacks are killer. I don't know why people are buying the other stuff really.

My friend has a Samsung CRT HD, not sure of the size, but it's awesome. It looks better than another HD I've viewed. That's why earlier I left HD CRTs out of my rant. :D

I'm hoping that SED TV will live up to the great CRT, but I'm not keeping my fingers crossed.

The 36" Trintron in my front room from 99 weighs about 270 tons.

It's a shame they don't sell Tube HDTV's here. I'm absolutely no fan of how my LCD monitors handles dark colours, and seeing the 360 on my bros own 32" HDTV makes me glad I haven't forked out for a proper HDTV yet.

Is there any tech coming out that will make these screens better? I mean Tube is so good with dark colours and LCD with bright colours. Something inbetween would be so nice.

SED TV (http://www.hdtvsolutions.com/sed_tvs.htm)!!! Supposedly. :)

It's basically a flat CRT from what I gathered? Anyway, it's coming this year along with Laser TVs. So I'm in no rush to replace my TV in the other room.

The EB gamestore just north of me has the same Samsung LCDTV I have, but hooked up to their 360. The difference between it at 720p and 480p on my Wii is marginal at best. I'm sorry, I just don't see the HD glory. :) I'm just a snob, since my screen is 1600p, so it's that much better at bastardizing content. :p

Adventures of Lolo, Super Mario Bros. 2, Donkey Kong Jr. Math, and Metroid were rated by the Australian OFLC. The boxart they posted on GoNintendo is too big but here is a link...

Oh... right then! It may very well have been. I'm notorious for jumping in on the VC at 11pm, when I was there last week only Zelda was up. I'll toddle off and have a look after midnight then!

edit: Mystical Ninja, Punchout and something else. I remember it looked like my kind of game too, have to research into it :) I should probably wait till midnight before checking the Virtual Console...

I'm definately getting SF. I loved this the first 2. The second is one of my favorite games from the 16-bit era. :)

DC starts out kind of poorly, but once the game gets going, and your guy gets turned into a draon, it's lots of fun. At least this is how I remember it. :o The level up, armor upgrades, and ability to turn into different animals as the game progressed really made the game for me. You had to be a certain type of animal in order to access some areas.

I'm getting Punchout, but even the haze of nostalgia can't mask how much of a disappointment (not just the tiny boxers) the nes version was when it came out. I was a big fan of the arcade (sans Mike Tyson) version and its sequel, but even VC one should be fun with the CC and good for some chuckles, assuming it costs no more than 500 points.

... That game are running a countrywide promotion on Wii Points cards. 7 quid for 2k points when bought with anything else in store. This isn't just a local thing after all. Thats half price from anywhere else, even the Wii shop! You could effectively get 4000 points for £15/$29. Think I'll get a mountain of them and buy some of those on-the-fence VC games.

It was in Games summer catalogue today. Be cool if they offered a trade in for Game points (if they're still doing them...) for Wii points cards. Get there before Nintendo does with its Stars.

You could set the wiimote to rumble and then let that sit in your lap while you hold the classic controller.

Actually I don't give a rats #@& about rumble for most games, but I would like to see more N64 titles. I figure Nintendo is holding out a bit until we've gobbled up the 8 and 16 bit titles before releasing too many N64 ones. Rationale would be simple enough. Retro gaming is more lucrative when starting with the oldest classics and then becoming more current. I don't think emulation problems could be the issue, considering that very good working emulators (e.g. Nforce for OSx) already exist for PC's and Macs. I mean, if that guy Geritt who did Nforce can achieve all by himself what he has, practically as a hobby in his spare time, then IMO the folks at Nintendo should be able to top that.

Today's games.

Today Nintendo adds three classic games to the popular Wii(TM) video game system’s Wii Shop Channel. The games go live at 9 a.m. Pacific time. Nintendo adds new games to the channel every Monday. Wii owners with ahigh-speed Internet connection can redeem Wii Points(TM) to download the games. Wii Points can be purchased in the Wii Shop Channel or at retail outlets. This week’s new games are:

Star Fox(R) 64 (Nintendo(R) 64, 1-4 players, 1,000 Wii Points): Players take the controls of their Arwing and complete 15 missions to reach the final objective: a showdown on Venom, the home planet of the interplanetary tyrant, Andross. Throughout the adventure, players have to accomplish challenging objectives in order to reach and conquer every mission. Skim over the surface of an alien sea, weave through the concrete canyons of a futuristic metropolis or dodge planetoids the size of mountains. Between missions, players will be treated to real-time 3-D movies that progress the story of the Star Fox team of space mercenaries in their struggle against the evil ape emperor, Andross.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles(R) (NES(R), 1 player, 600 Wii Points): Cowabunga! Players take control of the turtles in a half shell and rescue reporter April O’Neil from the clutches of the evil Shredder. Battle against the Foot Ninja Clan as Leonardo, Michaelangelo, Donatello and Raphael with their trademark weapons and ninja abilities. Search through five stages and dozens of areas throughout the New York City sewers, rooftops and ultimately Shredder’s Technodrome to save April. Players must scarf down some pizza to keep up their energy, as they’ll need it to defeat Shredder. Turtle Power!

(C)2007 Mirage Studios, Inc. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles(R) is a trademark of Mirage Studios, Inc. All rights reserved. (C)1989 Konami Digital Entertainment Co., Ltd.

Dragon’s Curse (TurboGrafx16, 1 player, 600 Wii Points): After defeating the Mecha Dragon in the depths of the Dragon Castle, the wounded beast casts a spell on the hero, turning him into an ugly creature. To return to human form, he must find the Salamander Cross, which can break any curse. This side-scrolling action role-playing game is nonlinear, allowing players to
venture freely. Collect gold and items while upgrading equipment and powering up stats. The hero starts as Lizard-Man but, upon defeating the dragon bosses, is changed into other creatures such as Mouse-Man, Piranha-Man,Tiger-Man and Hawk-Man. Each creature possesses distinct abilities such as the ability to fly, swim, walk on ceilings or cling to walls. Players use each creature’s special skills to widen your search for the Salamander Cross and bring the hero back to his human form!

How is that game worth more than any other NES game? Maybe it's to deter too-casual players from wading into the hell of that game and losing their minds, throwing controllers through TVs, etc.

I actually beat TMNT on the NES, fair and square.
-Sacrifice 1 guy on Level 2/Dam to reset the clock
-Rescue said guy on Level 3
-Load up everyone on scrolls in Level 3
-Proceed and pray for luck (that you get past the spike walls on Level 4, that you find the Technodrome quickly on Level 5, etc.)

Like it probably was with many of us, I was capable of some amazing gaming feats when I was younger. TMNT and beating NES Star Wars are right up there. Don't know if I could muster those same feats today.

Picked up Splatterhouse a couple days ago (it was one of the few TG16 games I owned back in the day, but I've long since sold that system). Simple, but fun. Not a great game, but still pretty entertaining. There are some cool bosses, and you just can't beat whacking zombies with a 2x4.

Original Castlevania would be nice, now that I'm finally on stage B-2 of SCV4 and plan to beat it tomorrow. One hell of a great game, and none too easy. Platforming and combat both get better and better, as does the music, as the game progresses. The pattern memorization in the higher levels actually reminds me of playing one of my other favorites, R-Type (!)

Today I bought SM64 and LOZ:OT. I kind of wish I had stuck with the 2-D games though, as the blurry visuals give me a headache and remind me of why I got rid of my N64 way back in the first place. SM64 is very sharp and has good visability, but the classic analog stick seems too sensitive for my taste. I really never liked that game, but I've always wanted to like it and hoped this time around I'd be read. For now I'm going back to SMW.

LOZ:OT has fine controls but the washed out blurry textures in anything but the brightest areas literally gives me headaches. It's as if my eyes are confused and can't seem to (more like, don't want to) lock on to the image in a stable way and my brain seems to be resisting making the necessary type of compensation. The 26" Widescreen LCD is at least 6 feet away - fine for all the other VC games I've played and noteably fine for Zelda:TP and Excitetruck. I like the game so far, but have to take short breaks every 15 minutes or so after that uneasy feeling sets in.

I am wondering about that one too.....been waiting awhile for it. Also, give us Castlevania please. I finished Castlevania SotN on the Xbox 360 Live Arcade and am really wanting to play the first now :)

SotN was the first Castlevania I played. It was a blast. I couldn't get into the other CVs, because of their stiff controls, but will play them now. I'm currently qnawing away on CV 4. :)

Have you played CV: DS and CV: PoR on the DS? They are 2 of my all time favorite side-scollers. CV: DS is the cream of the crop.

Only briefly on a friends DS as I do not have one anymore (bought mine when they first came out and sold it d/t a sorry selection of games after about 7 months of having it).

Castlevania (1) is still my favorite after all these years, but SotN is great too. I think the only version I didn't get into that much was the N64 version.

Bomberman '93 is fantastic, especially if you have a bunch of friends around.

It was only about a year after the DS was released, for it to explode with lots of great games. All good things take time. ;)

CV: DS is easily of the best games in the past decade, let alone absolutely the best CV IMO and the eyes of many others. All I can say, is pick up or borrow a DS to play it. It's more than just a platformer.

Dude, that's almost exactly what I have! :D

I do have Bomberman '93, Kirby's Adventure, Sim City and Zelda: OoT in addition though.

hah, nice

if they released the kirby game that came out for the N64, I'd be all over it. I really wanted to get Zelda:OoT for VC, but I already have the version for gamecube and I heard that the GC version is actually a little smoother.

Nice!!!

When will we see Sega Master System games? I was hoping that the upcoming release of Alien Syndrome, would spur the release of the original for VC. I noticed it was out for the NES, but the SMS version could display like 52 hyper-realistic-uber-colors on the screen at once, from a breathtaking palette of 256 colors. http://www.bainne.com/fun/blah_happy.gif

Do you have an itch to blast bug-shaped space fighters? Have you ever wondered whether Dr. Bomb was a medical doctor or a Ph.D.? Do you resolve all your disputes with a heated round of Rock, Paper, Scissors? If you answered yes to any of these questions, you'll want to pay a visit to the popular Wii™ video game system's Wii Shop Channel.

Three new classic games go live at 9 a.m. Pacific time. Nintendo adds new games to the channel every Monday. Wii owners with a high-speed Internet connection can redeem Wii Points™ to download the games. Wii Points can be purchased in the Wii Shop Channel or at retail outlets. This week's new games are:

Galaga™ (NES®, 1-2 players, 500 Wii Points): Players control their fighters, with their unique ability to combine with other fighters and shoot down the invading aliens. Aliens attack in formations using a variety of attack patterns. Rescue a captured fighter to combine with it, forming a Dual Fighter with twice the firepower. Earn Perfect Bonuses more easily by using a Dual Fighter on the Challenging Stages. Galaga was released in 1981 and became an instant classic with its innovative fighter-combination system and varied enemy attack patterns.

BRAVOMAN™ (Turbografx16, 1 player, 600 Wii Points): The village of Nitta has been invaded by the army of Dr. Bomb, an evil scientist who is plotting to take over the world. Facing this crisis is Bravoman, who received his powers from Alpha Man to stand up against Dr. Bomb in the name of justice. The village of Nitta consists of 22 stages - action stages that take place on the ground and shooting stages that take place underwater. Action stages use a unique control system in which the height of a jump and the distance of an attack changes depending on how long players hold down the button. Players collect the Luck Symbols that appear when they defeat enemies and give them to Lottery Man to get recovery and power-up items. Stop Dr. Bomb and bring peace to the village of Nitta and the rest of the world.

Alex Kidd™ in the Enchanted Castle (Sega Genesis, 1-2 players, 800 Wii Points): When King Thor was kidnapped, his son, Alex Kidd, held out hope that his father would return to their kingdom on Planet Aries. Finally, it was revealed that he was being held captive on Planet Paperock. As Alex, players race to his rescue through 11 levels, battling enemies and avoiding obstacles while winning coins that will buy special items and vehicles. At the end of each level, players encounter a boss and enter into a match of "Rock, Paper, Scissors." Throwing the right symbols puts players ever closer to bringing King Thor home; throwing the wrong symbols squashes them beneath a heavy weight.

Bonk's Revenge, eh, I need to buy the first one. Oh well, Beyond Oasis it is...

I thought that region issues, where as certain peeps have the rights to distributing certain games in certain areas, were preventing games from being released about the same time?

Contra 3 is great. Me and my friend suck at it, so were bummed when we found out the US released has no cheats. :o

It was also ported to the Sega Mega Drive/Genesis in 1996, but because the hardware couldn't handle the complex visuals of the arcade version, it was re-made as a 2D fighter.

WII-KLY UPDATE: THREE NEW CLASSIC GAMES ANNOUNCED FOR WII SHOP CHANNEL

April 16, 2007

Three classic games from three classic systems. The only problem you'll have this week is deciding which one to download first. For the best retro gaming around, it's time to pay a visit to the popular Wii™ video game system's Wii Shop Channel.

Punch Out!!® Featuring Mr. Dream (NES®, 1 player, 500 Wii Points): As young boxer Little Mac, players have a once-in-a-lifetime chance to battle the big guys of the World Video Boxing Association circuit. Take them on one by one, starting with skinny Glass Joe. Battle up through King Hippo and all the way to the WVBA Champion himself. Players use their best jabs, hooks and power uppercuts to knock out opponents, but must pay attention to subtle changes in their body position to dodge jaw-breaking blows. With great graphics, addictive action and a touch of humor, this game will keep players entertained for hours.

Virtua Fighter™ 2 (Sega Genesis, 1-2 players, 800 Wii Points): Virtua Fighter was the very first 3-D fighting game in the industry and introduced six unique characters, each with their own martial arts style. In Virtua Fighter 2, the intrepid fighters return to the World Fighting Tournament. Players take to the stage to see who will claim the championship title. Will it be Lau Chan, Kage-Maru, Wolf Hawkfield, Jeffry McWild, Akira Yuki, Jacky Bryant, Sarah Bryant or Pai Chan? The answer lies within. Players immerse themselves in this technically challenging game and see if they have what it takes to be the champion of the second World Fighting Tournament.

Bonk's Revenge (TurboGrafx16, 1 player, 600 Wii Points): The "hardheaded" hero is back for more in the second installment of the Bonk series. Taking place in the Monster Kingdom, Bonk the Caveman makes his way toward King Drool III. Bonk's Revenge is a side-scrolling action game in which players Jump and "Bonk" (head-butt) their enemies while they make their way to the goal at the end of each stage. Double, even triple, attack power by eating the meat that appears in a stage. There are eight different hidden bonus stages, and the Dinosaur Train that appears after players defeat a boss will change depending on how many Smileys they've collected. With new actions such as the Triangle Jump and the ability to climb trees, as well as seven variety-packed stages, Bonk's Revenge will keep players playing over and over.

As far as I remember Iron Mike was only in the US version and even that was pulled once the rape charges came out. Then it was simply Punch Out in the US.

I also remember just a year or two later Green Jello became Green Jelly and they replaced their cd's as well :D

Yeah, I know...a bit of Soviet-style revisionism from the Big N. Still, it's good to see a true classic out on VC.

No interest in Punch-Out = no interest in LIFE!

I never really played Punch-out when it was first released, but started playing in the last 5 years or so...it's really a great game, and one of few that's better in 8-bit than 16 (Double Dragon being another). I'd say it's worth a try even for those, like me, without a big nostalgia factor.

Bring on Super Dodgeball, Blazing Lazers, and Rock N' Roll Racing, and I'll be a happy VC camper.

EDIT 4/17: Looks like this entire thread & forum has been consigned to second-class citizen hell...can't even reply to the ongoing discussion...can't say as I'll be back in two weeks, as this seems such overkill/baby-with-the-bathwater...it's been fun.

Interesting you should say that. Apparently all games can be done in any "dimension" or bittage and retain the same quality and feel of the original.

I'm with you though. Some games, I'll add Contra, Sonic and Prince of Persia to the list, only work in certain situations.

I agree. There are a bunch of NES games that I don't think they ever topped. Super Mario 3, Contra, Mega Man 2, and Ninja Gaiden 2 all come to mind as being the best on NES IMO.

I agree. The changes made to Contra on the 360 were not for the better with the exception of being able to co-op via Xbox Live. The rest of the alterations were garbage....almost ruining the experience. I'll probably buy it on the Wii VC too if they ever release it.
