I've seen the threads about how lame the VC is but I really don't think its too bad. Personally, I'm thinking about buying:

The Legend of Zelda
Sonic the Hedgehog
Super Mario 64
Gunstar Heroes
and Super Mario Brothers

Thats like $36 already and it hasn't even been out a month...That said, I can't wait for some some game like Punch Out! and Ocarina or Time come out...! Also, like others have said I would like to see some of these titles with higher res and widescreen options but I can live without it...

My roommate has purchased Donkey Kong, Bomberman '93, and (just yesterday) Ice Hockey for my Wii. (: I'll be getting a classic controller for, or after, Christmas, and will probably buy Super Mario 64.

Agreed.

At least with xbox live arcade they added those kind of things to the original games, as well as an online scoreboard comparing your score to your friends.

I dont think it's alot to ask nintendo to do a little more to justify the $10/$8 asking price.

I bought Gunstar Heros, and I like it alot is is kinda like Contra. Anyone remember contra?? They need to release ninja turtles which was on Snes (it could have been on sega I dont know exactly). That was my childhood! growing up playing that game it was good stuff.

I think they are overpriced, so I won't be buying any. Maybe if they were retooled to make use of the Wiimote it would be worth it.

How is sonic?

Christmas day we are getting SMB along with a few other nice VC games. I made a post about it here http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=262646

I currently have Mario Bros. & Bonk, ive about cleared bonk but Mario Bros lost my interest pretty fast.

They need more N64 games :(

Wii Play is really disappointing actually so you're not losing out there.

I've only got Mario 64 and I only got that to tie me over in the week I had to wait between getting my Wii and getting Zelda.

I haven't bought anything. Wondering about what games to actually buy (and figuring out how to get some funds...).

I'm wondering if I should get Gunstar Heroes or Mario 64...

I missed the N64/PSX days, so Mario 64 wouldn't be bad. And I can't find the GBA version of Super Gunstar Heroes... I may get Super Mario Bros. somewhere down the line for real old school nostalgia although I have the Super Nintendo Mario All Stars. I feel like I should wait for some better games. And there's still a need for some better SD support before my VC library gets too big.

I'm also still waiting for VC to support online multiplayer. It should be quite feasible. Since VC is an emulator, just add NetPlay-style code from your Mac and PC emulators and have a separate online service to match up players based on the games they have or friend codes and such.

Picked up Sonic (MD/Gen), R-TYPE (TG16), and Super Mario Bros (NES) recently. This brings my total to 10.

It's funny how quickly you remember the old games. I was playing Super Mario Bros for less than 20 minutes before I had remembered how to warp to the 8th world. I also find it amazing how all these years later it's still 1 of the best platform games ever! GREAT GAME!!!!

I bought Street Fighter 2. :D Now hopefully I don't get pissed off at it, like I did on my SNES to the point of destroying things. The game cheats big-time on level 7. That was a long time ago, so hopefully age can control my SF2 rage. I certainly would not want to chew on my Wii. :o

I'm going to get R-Type next. :) I have 200 points, so need to spend $20 more to zero my account.

So far, I bought Zelda(nes), Street FighterII, F-Zero and Baseball(nes). Actually, I like them all, but my best is baseball. You must think I’m crazy but it’s so challenging when you play with someone else. There is a lot of tactics in that game and the best part is when you steal a base. Ok heres the jacka$$ question of the day. Well 3 of them actually.

1. Can I use my Wavebird for Super Mario Bros
2. Have they done anything at al with Super Mario Bros or is it the exact same game from the old school?
3. Does the internal Wii memory card have enough room for a few downloaded games?

WII-KLY UPDATE: THREE NEW CLASSIC GAMES ANNOUNCED FOR WII SHOP CHANNEL

Jan. 15, 2007

Today Nintendo adds three new classic games to the popular Wii™ video game system's Wii Shop Channel. The games go live at 9 a.m. Pacific time. Nintendo adds new games to the channel every Monday. Wii owners with a high-speed Internet connection can redeem Wii Points to download the games. Wii Points can be purchased in the Wii Shop Channel or at retail outlets. This week's new games are:

Xevious™ (NES®, 1-2 players, 500 Wii Points): Players control their Solvalou ship and destroy the XEVIOUS forces. Fire the zapper missiles against air-based enemies and drop the blaster bombs down upon ground-based targets. Destroy Andor Genesis to earn bonus points. Unique enemies, interesting background music, a variety of vertically scrolling background environments and many hidden game play features differentiated Xevious from the other shooting games released at the time. Are you devious enough to beat Xevious?

R-Type III™: The Third Lightning (Super NES®, 1-2 players, 800 Wii Points): It was believed on Earth that the deadly BYDO Empire had been destroyed - but now they've returned, as nasty as ever. Their ships and armies are more powerful than before, and Earth will surely be conquered unless the new R-90 ship can destroy them. Powered with engines that launch it into different dimensions, and armed with the Round, Shadow and Cyclone Forces, the R-90 has what it takes to wipe out the BYDO threat. The BYDO mother ship must be found and destroyed to entirely erase the species from our galaxy.

Moto Roader™ (TurboGrafx16, 1-5 players, 600 Wii Points): Moto Roader is a futuristic racing game that allows up to five players to compete against each other. Players use the cash earned when they win a race to power up their machine. Not only can they change the "TIRE" and "BODY" of their vehicles, but they also can add "SPECIAL" parts. Jump over tall obstacles with a "HOPPER" and blast past rivals at incredible speeds with "NITRO." What multiplayer game would be complete without attack items? Use a forward-launching "GRENADE" or a backward-dropping "BOMBER" to blow up and knock away rivals. Outmaneuver rivals in all eight heats to become the champion. Any combination of Wii Remote™ and Nintendo GameCube™ controllers can be used in multiplayer games.

On the contrary! The only game I bought so far has been R-Type, and now I'll be adding R-Type III to my list. Other than that the other games don't appeal to me at all.

Remember, the virtual console is for classic games, and shooters were really popular during that time (and yes they used to be called "shooters" until the 1st-person games like Doom came out and stole the category name). :p

GunStar Heroes will need to wait, I'm buying this next.

Shooters were a very popular genre Sky Blue. Maybe no Mario, but still enough to warrant sequels upon sequels. R-Type is my all time favorite shooter series. :)

If you like Golden Sun, buy Shining Force I or II when they come out as they were both developed by Camelot I think. Shining Force is a tactical RPG and the forefather of Final Fantasy Tactics and Fire Emblem. I would imagine most of the guys clamoring for FFIII (VI), Super Mario RPG, Earthbound, and Chronotrigger will overlook them or complain that they aren't one of those games but they are brilliant.

So far, it looks like Sega has the best VC selection IMO and I'm guessing that this is by Nintendo's design. They want third party developers to have some success with their games so that they will put more on.

So far, I have:

Super Mario Brothers
LoZ
Super Mario 64
and Gunstar Heroes
(I didn't get Sonic because I am holding out for 2, 3, or knuckles...not sure which is the best though...Similarly, I didn't buy Street Fighter II because I imagine they will release the Turbo edition or Super version later. Both, of which, are better...)

I played all of them as a kid but Gunstar Heroes is more fun than I remember and I find myself playing it more than the others; which, I mainly bought for nostalgia. In fact, it might be the best run 'n gun I have ever played. Even better than Contra 3 Gasp!

I got my arcade sticks today. It's so much nicer for SF2 and now I can finally actually place SNKvCapcom. It also adds something to R-Type. I'm going to sick with the CC for comfort.

And on this RPG thing, I definately would like to see the Shinning Force games offered. SF 2 was a great game on the Genesis.

I liked Golden Sun overal, but the story was horrid. The "to be continued" thing at the end ticked me off. Enough so, that I sold the game and didn't care to play the sequel.

<]=)

I guess Defender, Space Invaders and Galaga weren't popular games? Nor Gradius, Life Force, or even Contra, just to name a few.

It's probably just the lolipop you live on, where they weren't that popular. :)

Anyways, silly to you, good news to me. R-Type 3 offers 2-player mode, something the first one does not.

Yup, Shining Force is on the GBA but not Shining Force II...It is also more expensive than it will be on the virtual console if it comes out. Plus, I like the idea of having all of my favorite games on one console... There is a version of Final Fantasy Tactics for GBA but it is a shell of the PS1 game with the job system providing most of the value.

I've been waiting for Shining Force on the VC, one of my favourite games as a kid. Give us Shining Force IV on DS!

If they ever release any Saturn games for the VC, Shining Force III would be a must play for me. It was a three part saga but the Saturn died before part 2 & 3 were translated to english. Even NiGHTS would have to wait for me to beat SFIII. Its too bad that they have strayed so far from the Shining Force formula on the new systems.

You need FireFox with some kind of extension to view it. I had a play about but removed it because FF is ugly as hell.

Good news though. I'm in two minds whether to buy it or not. I'm not too keen on the game myself, having to force play sessions on the GBA port. (seems to be my key word at the moment) just doesn't feel like theres any charm in there, where LA had bucket loads. But it's a classic so I might as well buy...

You're right. Defender and Space Invaders were HUGE during the SNES/Genesis Era. I remember Nintendo had Galaga and Sega had Gradius, people argued which was best for ages. They were big system sellers back in the day.
Take a look at some of the best selling games for NES/SNES/Mega Drive:

* Super Mario Bros.
* Super Mario Bros. 3
* Super Mario Bros. 2
* The Legend of Zelda
* Zelda II: The Adventure of Link
* Dragon Warrior III
* Dragon Warrior IV
* Golf
* Baseball
* Dragon Warrior II
# Super Mario World
# Donkey Kong Country
# Super Mario Kart
# Street Fighter II
# The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past
# Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest
# Street Fighter II Turbo
# Sonic the Hedgehog 2
# Sonic the Hedgehog

Some awesome shoot em ups there, Dragon Warrior had some great enemy ship designs, and I loved the power ups for your craft in Donkey Kong country.

So I plugged in my new classic controller last night and I'm very impressed. First, you do not need the wii remote at all (though, of cours, the CC does need to be plugged into it). The classic controller's left analog stick controls the pointer in all the wii menus, so you you can just set the wii remote aside and forget about it. Second, the dpad is light years ahead of the wii remote dpad, or obviously the cube's dpad for these games. It has a bit of a soft feel but the size is nice and it's very responsive. Not quite as good as the SNES dpad, but way ahead of anything in the last 10 years. The controller is smaller than it looks in the packaging, but was extremely comfortable. The buttons are great, the form factor is excellent, the analog sticks are the best Nintendo's ever done, and the shoulder buttons feel good (although the ZR and ZL buttons are a little tough to reach - not sure what would actually use them).

Here's hoping Nintendo rigs up something in a future update to let you use these w/ GC games, because it's a great controller. If you play a lot of VC games I highly recommend it.

Possibly a stupid/repeated question for US VC users:

When you buy a Wii points card in a store like Target/Best Buy are you charged sales tax? or is it like a gift card?

How about the points you buy directly on the Wii?

I was just looking at buying points via the Wii Shop channel tonight and it hit me that stores price the points at $19.99 (typically) while the Wii shop want the full $20, however if the brick and mortar stores charge sales tax the free point* isn't worth it...

*(not that I'm nitpicking over a penny, it was more of a "why the different price?" question that quickly became "do the stores charge sales tax on Wii points?")

In the UK it's pretty much loads cheaper to buy them online. Even the Wikipedia entry for the VC has a table of points/cost in different countries- the UK is the only one to have 2 entries for online and in store!
It's something minor but still. So I'm guessing there is no sales tax from the Wiki entry alone...

Cool. I just looked at the table. :)

Why do they charge $9 in New Zealand just to download a game?! There's no shipping/importing going on!!!

Gunstar Heros is a great way to kill a few hours with a friend. I was bummed when I found out R-Type 3 was only 2 players alternating, so bought GH last night. We blasted away for about 3 hours on this seizure causing game.

I want R-Type 2. :) Anyone know the titles of these new Genesis games?

I have 200 points now. I've spent $30 bucks on the VC so far.

How do we recover our VC games if we get a replacment Wii, if the current one breaks?

Super Mario World

I didn't mind the GBA version, mainly because it's portable. The convenience of being able to play it anywhere, is why I finished it.

I'm going to answer my own question on this one. After buying 1000 Wii points last night through the Wii (and promptly spending 800 of them on LoZ:LttP) I found you get nailed for sales Tax regardless of where you purchase them. When going through the Wii it asks for the City/State/Zip/County for the billing address of the credit card. So now I can go buy the cards at the store and after I buy my 500th get a free NES game for the penny saved on each card.... (a free NES game for every $10,000 spent, what a deal! of course with the 1,000,000 Wii points you probably wouldn't be able to find a game you didn't already download).

I could also save using coupons at Best Buy provided a Wii Points card is considered a Video Game Accessory...

That sucks. I just double checked mine to make sure I didn't brush over the tax charge and Nintendo didn't charge me tax on any of my purchases. I'm In California.

I've been leaving the county field blank, don't know if that makes a difference. If I got charged tax, I would just buy the cards from my friend's store.

I might have to try that but I doubt it will work, I'm thinking this probably goes by state rather than county... and it's not that hard to find the county if you know the city and zip code... guess I'll just have to find out if Wii points count as an accessory at Best Buy... use a 10-12% off coupon to negate the tax.

A reward zone membership (I think they're free now) and a Best Buy card. They send the coupons about once a month. Usually in a 3 pack. One that gives 10% off music, movies, or games with a limit of 3 in any combination (it used to be 5), another that is 10% of some fairly specific area merchandise (HDTV, Computers, Cameras), and a third that is 10% off a broader range of stuff and that one lately adds the 12% if you use your Reward Zone membership. We used to use them more but now we're getting more frugal with the kids and all...

And yeah! A Link to the Past is out now!!!!

This link (http://press.nintendo.com/articles.jsp?id=11109) confirms Mario Kart 64 next week and it's straight from Nintendo.

On a fun side note... Suspend only works if you actually hit the home button... if for some odd reason the power button gets hit and the Wii turns off (gotta love toddlers) it will reset the game so you will have to continue from where you last saved... which for me in a LttP was before getting any of the pendants and about 4 hearts, at the point the power was hit I had 9 hearts and was almost to the 3rd pendant... about 2 hours of playtime gone...

Oh well at least this time I get to try to do it in 0 saves to really see how well I remember the game...at least with suspend I don't have to sit for what I seem to recall being a 7 hour marathon session to pull that off.

JackAxe
Jan 25, 2007, 02:05 AM
No toddlers here, so I haven't had that issue. :D

Does the VC LttP still have that counter bug, where as if you save and quit the counter advances by one?

I wish I could save multiple suspend states. This would certainly help out for R-Type. I got to the level 4 boss without dying again and forgot he comes from the left, so backed into him. *grumbles* Level 4 is a nightmare without all of the upgrades.

A bit of a hack and I won't guarantee that it'll work but you might try getting an SD card, suspending and then backing up that recently suspended game to the SD card. That way if you want to start from before you died you can just restore from the SD card.

I may have to try this myself just to see if it works. It could save me some time if I just back up to my SD card before starting to play...

Master Quest isn't much more than a harder version of OoT.

I believe I played OoT for a few hours once a few years back... since it seems to be highly regarded I thought I might pick it up for the Wii, just wanted to make sure I didn't get in a situation where one of the versions was much better than the other and purchase the wrong one.

Of course this would require me to accumulate more Wii points (self imposed limit of 1000/month) and for them to release OoT, and me to not want another game more (OoT is highly regarded but I will be more predisposed to purchase games I've played more and know I like).

I actually have the Zelda Collectors disk with Zelda, Zelda II, OoT and MM on it. I've put it on Ebay, it's already over $30, so I can rebuy the games on the VC. Having the games on the Wii, not having to use the GC controller and not being able to go back to the Wii menu from a GC did it for me.

heh. I have 1 game from each system now. Funny how that happened.

Did you buy Gunstar Heros yet? It's made by the same peeps that made Contra.

Gunstar Heros is a 2 player Contra type game, so running and shooting in all directions with loads of difficulty. If you like Contra, I guarantee you'll enjoy this game.

Most Treasure/Contra Fans consider GSH to be the cream of the crop when it comes to this genre.

I probably wouldn't have bought the game if it were only single player, but it's well worth the purchase to play with a friend.

4 new games for Virtual Console today
January 29th, 2007

Today Nintendo adds four new classic games to the popular Wii video game system’s Wii Shop Channel. The games go live at 9 a.m. Pacific time. Nintendo adds new games to the channel every Monday. Wii owners with a high-speed Internet connection can redeem Wii Points to download the games. Wii Points can be purchased in the Wii Shop Channel or at retail outlets. This week’s new games are:

Mario Kart 64 - (Nintendo 64, 1-4 players, 1,000 Wii Points): Put the pedal to the metal in this worthy successor to the Super NES classic, Super Mario Kart. Mario Kart 64 boasts great graphics, tons of unique power-ups and a stunning 3-D version of the legendary Battle Mode. With improved courses and a revolutionary head-to-head four-player mode, Mario Kart 64 is sure to win the heart of any race-driving fan. The game includes 20 different courses filled with dips, valleys, jumps, tunnels and bridges. Smooth, precise control ‘a trademark of all games from Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto’will bring players back time and time again for freewheeling fun.

Contra III: The Alien Wars - (Super NES, 1-2 players, 800 Wii Points): In the year 2636, the Alien War continues, and it’s up to two soldiers, Jimbo and Scully, to put a stop to the alien invasion. The aliens have ravaged the Earth with their powerful organic and technological weapons. Players can join with a partner and battle through six stages of nonstop run-and-gun action. Collect power-ups, including bombs, flamethrowers, spread shots, lasers and machine guns to take out the aliens. Control Jimbo and Scully as they travel through war-torn cities, race on air bikes, ride missiles and ultimately break into the alien base to defeat the alien boss once and for all.

Bonanza Bros. - (Sega Genesis, 1-2 players, 800 Wii Points): Mobo and Robo Bonanza are enjoying their favorite television show when the picture crackles and the shadowy figure of a mysterious stranger appears on the screen. This figure asks them to collect certain items that he has placed inside various buildings to test his security force. If they return the items successfully, Mobo and Robo will be rewarded. The two of them state that they will get the job done in just three minutes. However, little do they know that each building is packed with security guards who will raise the alarm if they are caught red-handed. Fortunately both Mobo and Robo are equipped with bullets that can knock the guards unconscious for a few seconds. A huge reward will be given out if Mobo and Robo are apprehended. Help the infamous Bonanza Bros. infiltrate a number of different locations ranging from banks to mansions to casinos, and don’t get caught.

Comix Zone - (Sega Genesis, 1 player, 800 Wii Points): Sketch Turner is an artist in New York City. One day while Sketch is drawing, a huge thunderstorm strikes the city. A bolt of lightning hits Sketch’s image and brings it to life. That image is Mortus, a megalomaniacal mutant who wants to become real and rule the earth. Mortus magically transports Sketch into the pages of his comic book so that he can end his creator’s life and become real. Inside the comic book, Sketch meets General Alissa Cyan, who believes he is a superhero that came to save their post-apocalyptic world from the evil brought by Mortus’s hand. Now that he’s a comic book superhero, Sketch can really put the hurt on the bad guys. Instantly, Sketch can fight like a one-man mercenary platoon.

Nowt for me this week.

Contra frickin' 3. That's great. Now if they only could get Contra 1 up there...

VC is really shaping up in recent weeks. This whole "Nintendo holds good VC games until Wii droughts" strategy seemed terrible back in Nov., but it's really got me looking forward to something, if not buying something, most weeks, and sustaining hype/interest in the console. Helps that they finally seem to be past the crap NES games and into the quality titles.

Aye, there are still some games on the VC that I want but won't pay full asking price for (yet). The strategy works. I'm coming to the end of Zelda, Wii Sports is still getting played loads, and Warioware is still good. But these little 2D games are really holding me. I just can't get my ahead around how cheap they are, sure theres no physical boxes or anything but they're indestructible exact digital versions with a manual that will never scuff, and super quick (no cart blowing) straight-to-the-game times.

I swear to almighty God if Mario World is out this Friday then BAM. Some games I wont think twice about buying.

Can I ask what exactly a "Probotector" is? I know "Contra" is kinda un-PC, especially from the '80s, but it has a certain charm. Probotector sounds like something aliens do to your posterior (hmm, actually kinda close to the games themselves!)

raggedjimmi
Jan 29, 2007, 02:32 PM
I've no idea either. But the bot designs are direct rips from Uridium 2.
I prefer them as robots in this one. Guys in Contra, robots in Contra 3+.

Plus I get to fantasise about it being some kind of super linear Turrican.

Oh, OK, guess that makes sense. Having never seen the game, apart from reading its title, didn't know that. Are the main characters robots? Do they look different from the Contra 3 guys (i.e., like robots), or are they just called robots while still looking human (i.e., the cheap way out)?

Yeah, it does compare well. MK64 has a few things over Double Dash: lots of course shortcuts not intended by the developers (awesome - look them up), better battlemode courses (skyscraper for 2 players, block fort for 3+), and better all-around battle-mode (no invincibility crap to protect you after you get hit).

well well well. Sega haven't changed their VC lineup dates this week. So looks like we're getting Bonanza Bros, Comix Zone and Gain Ground.
I liked Comix Zone back in the day but felt it didn't keep the momentum going. Absolutely genius concept though.

Nintendo are semi-nice to us Europeans now... but I don't know if they're going to be absolutely lovely and release LttP or Mario World tonight along with three Sega VC games (which is probably a record in its own so far). Fingers crossed! just over an hour to go...

EDIT:

There we go. The above games plus Gradius. GRADIUS?! WTF. Lame guys. Gradius was never good.

Every Monday in the states....

I think Jimmi is going to come over here and kill us this week....

link (http://press.nintendo.com/articles.jsp?id=11194)

This week's new games are:

Super Mario World™ (Super NES®, 1-2 players, 800 Wii Points): During a vacation in Dinosaur Land, Princess Toadstool gets kidnapped and a spell is cast on the inhabitants of the island. When they stumble upon Yoshi™, a young dinosaur, Mario™ and Luigi learn that Bowser is responsible for the terrible misdeeds. Now, all Yoshis are trapped in magical eggs that Bowser has hidden throughout seven castles. Many hidden paths aid Mario in making his way to Bowser's castle, completing 74 areas and finding all 96 exits. Discover items, including a feather that gives Mario a cape that allows him to fly, or a flower that shoots fireballs in layers upon layers of 2-D scrolling landscapes. Players can even ride Yoshi and swallow their enemies.

VIGILANTE™ (TurboGrafx-16, 1 player, 600 Wii Points): Brave the streets of New York City in this side-scrolling beat-'em-up game. Thugs kidnap the beloved Madonna, and it's up to players to become vigilantes. Players fight their way into enemy territory to get her back. Enemies attack with weapons like iron pipes, chains, guns and motorcycles. To fight back, players can punch, kick or use the "nunchaku" item that appears in the stage. Players must use each of the attacks effectively to defeat their enemies. To clear a stage, defeat the boss that waits at the end. Players fight their way through exciting stages that include the City Streets, Junkyard, Brooklyn Bridge and the Backstreets.

Gain Ground™ (Sega Genesis, 1-2 players, 800 Wii Points): It's the 31st century, and science and technology have progressed to the point that the human race is approaching perfection: no war, no poverty and no conflict. With nothing to worry about, the human race seems destined to live forever in harmony. But what if Earth came under attack? By this point in time, people did not know how to cope with problems or conflicts, and had completely lost their survival instincts. In response to this, the United Earth Government created the Gain Ground system, a war simulator that would help humans rediscover their lost instincts. After several terrible malfunctions, the creators became prisoners in their own creation. Now it's up to players and two courageous comrades to go into the Gain Ground system, rescue their fellow humans and destroy the system. Players battle through different periods in history as they revive their survival instincts, while trying to live.

I know my wife won't be happy... between LttP and SMW, I don't think I'll ever get a chance to sleep...

So I got my Wii a few weeks ago (finally :) and have purchased the following VC games:
Super Mario Bros. (NES)
Super Mario World (SNES)
The Legend of Zelda (NES)
The LoZ A Link to the Past (SNES)
Super Castlevania (SNES)
Super Contra (SNES)
Kid Icarus (NES)

So far I love the Wii. If I want to sit down for hours and play video games, I'll play WoW. If I want to play online with some friends, I'll use the 360. If I want to play these older games, do some bowling, play video games with my wife, or play video games with a bunch of people visiting, I'll play the Wii.

Here's to hoping we get some Metroids soon, SMB 2&3, and the original Castlevania :)

We gathered that with other games. :D I like the GC's controller overall, but for 2D it plain sucks. I ripped the skin off my thumb playing SNK vs Capcom do to its awkwardness.

Fortunately Classic Controllers are finally in abundance, at least in my area, so besides budget, there's no reason not to get one for VC games. :) Great controller, easily the best available.

I have CDs full of errr... Anyway, I agree with zap2 that it's just so much better to play these things on a TV with a real controller. Even using a gamepad on my comps was never quite right.

I broke down and got more Wii ponts to get Vigilante. Another one of those games I wanted back in the day, but never bought. It's pretty fun for what it is - a simple, linear beat-em-up in the Kung Fu tradition. Visually, it's a very nice looking game, but I was expecting a *little* bit more out of the gameplay - something closer to Bad Dudes, Double Dragon or Street of Rage. On the other hand, the simplicty is also kind of nice if you're in the mood to beat up "skinheads" for 20 minutes. It's pretty difficult, but it's designed to be played over and over, and the quick pace of the game makes that enjoyable. Not sure I'd recommend it for mass-purchase, unless you're either already a fan of the game or a big fan of the genre.

WII-KLY UPDATE: THREE NEW CLASSIC GAMES ANNOUNCED FOR WII SHOP CHANNEL

Feb. 12, 2007

Today Nintendo adds three new classic games to the popular Wii™ video game system's Wii Shop Channel. The games go live at 9 a.m. Pacific time. Nintendo adds new games to the channel every Monday. Wii owners with a high-speed Internet connection can redeem Wii Points™ to download the games. Wii Points can be purchased in the Wii Shop Channel or at retail outlets. This week's new games are:

Kirby's Adventure™ (NES®, 1 player, 500 Wii Points): Not everything is well in Dream Land. For some mysterious reason, the Dream Spring, a magical well that is the reservoir for all the dreams of the citizens of Dream Land, is no longer working. Everyone is being subjected to their worst nightmares every time they go to sleep. Upon reaching the Dream Spring, Kirby finds out that evil King Dedede has stolen the Star Rod, thus depriving Dream Land of the magical energy that feeds its spring. Using 20 unique tricks and the ability to steal enemies' powers by swallowing them, players have to make their way through a horrific land filled with all kinds of nightmares. Recover the broken pieces of the Star Rod and everyone in Dream Land will sleep peacefully once again. Fail and the citizens of Dream Land will be subjected to a lifetime of terrible nightmares.

Ice Climber™ (NES, 1-2 players, 500 Wii Points): As Popo, players use a trusty mallet to work their way up the mountain. They chip away at the blocks overhead, then jump up through the resulting hole to the mountain's next level. Once Popo reaches the top level, he enters a fast-moving bonus stage in which he can pick up veggies and, hopefully, reach the summit for a big point payoff. Of course, not everyone's supportive of Popo's pastime. Toppies fill Popo's holes, so players must jump through the gaps quickly. It's easy to slip off some of the icy levels, as Polar Bears, Toppies and other ferocious fauna don't want players up there. There are 32 challenging peaks to scale – players can face them alone or with a friend.

Kid Icarus™ (NES, 1 player, 500 Wii Points): In a time when men and gods lived in harmony, the kingdom of Angel Land was ruled by two goddesses: Palutena, the Goddess of Light, and Medusa, the Goddess of Darkness. Unlike Palutena, Medusa despised all humans and enjoyed destroying their crops and turning them into stone. One day, Palutena decided to punish the evil Medusa and banished her after turning her into a hideous monster. But Medusa would not go without a fight. She created an army of monsters and evil spirits and captured Palutena. Players play as Pit, a young angel trapped in the Underworld, and Palutena's only hope. They use a magical bow to retrieve the Sacred Treasures, defeat Medusa and restore peace to Angel Land.

Kid Icarus and Kirby...wooooooooooooo!

I find (still, today) Kid Icarus to be horrendously difficult and unforgiving. When playing it back in the day, I used various Nintendo Power-published codes for lots of life & powers. Starting from scratch is too rough for me.

But still, a very solid NES selection. VC is really getting fleshed out.

I'm holding out for Rock&Roll Racing.

Wow this week was a good one. I'm getting Kirby for sure and maybe Kid Icarus in the future. I'm not sure about Ice Climbers...I think it wouldn't be so hyped if is wasn't in Super Smash Bros. I hadn't even heard of it before then.

The remaining NES games I would like to see are:

Super Mario Bros 3
Punch Out!
Little Nemo: DreamMaster
Star Tropics
River City Ransom
Ducktales
Mega Man 2
Castlevania 3
Final Fantasy
Ninja Gaiden
Kid Icarus
Maniac Mansion
Blaster Master
Treasure!
Zelda II
Super Mario Bros 2
Contra

Any big ones I'm missing? I can see that the VC is starting to turn out to be quite expensive. I have around 50 titles I want for the systems that are represented. But I guess it is cheaper than buying that many Wii games...

Oh cool, sorta like how I modded my Xbox and PS2 so hell, I didn't have to buy games legally anymore. I just downloaded iso's!

Nah. The appeal of playing these games on a PC with all the junk running in the background doesn't appeal to me. If I'm working and I take a break, I head to the kitchen, get a drink, grab the Wiimote and have a play on Mario World some more. I've popped into the living room some times to find my computer illiterate mother playing Mario Bros or Sonic. Oh sorry, we're not allowed to bring in families here. like a non-gamer is actually playing and enjoying her first game system since the 80's, an audience Nintendo has targetted and is working, is any sign at all.

I really wish Super Mario RPG would come out. Does anyone know if this can't be an option because it was developed by Square? I'm just not sure if things like that hold back a game from being rereleased.

Well if/when I get a Wii maybe I'll get sucked into spending money this way. :)

I can think of several reasons...

1. I'm not usually one to preach but unless you own the original carts, emulation (not sanctioned by the property owner) is illegal and wrong.

2. I don't have my Mac hooked up to my 42" TV, and the VC titles work with controllers that are pretty much the same as the originals. (Snes=Classic, Wiimote=NES, TG15, GC=N64...) $5-$10 is really a competetive price IMO if you consider how much some of these carts are selling for these days. Most NES carts are at least $5 if not more, and rare titles like Chronotrigger are significantly more.

3. It is super convenient to have all of your games in once place. My Wii can play most of my favorite games (excluding those on Sony consoles) from the last 20 years. It is so cool having NES, SNES, Genesis, TG16, Game Cube, and Wii games available to me all in one convenient place.

Ive seen several lists having Super Mario RPG being released this quarter. It is a must download as well, and a complete bargain for the Virtual Console price.

1. Exactly. I'll never pirate or rip games. As a life long gamer it's something that I find cheats the industry. Hell cheating in games is no fun either.
2. My monitor is my TV :) but even so, I'd have to restart into XP to use an emulator and disrupt my whole workflow. The games are priced perfectly. I challenge anyone to find a SNES game first hand that doesn't cost the world. An unboxed Mario AllStars went for 70 quid at my GameStation. Even 2nd hand ones cost more than the Virtual Console. NES Zelda? 30 quid. Virtual Console? A fiver.
3. Yup. TV show goes off? Onto the Wii. Adverts? Resume a game on Sonic. Rather snazzy and convenient.

Truth be told I'm spending more time on the VC now than Zelda and WarioWare.
I have completed both games :o

I wonder what the Wii is like for someone without a history gaming? Someone who didn't play Zelda as a kid and gets to play it for the first time? Mario Kart 64 and Kirby's Adventure (my last NES game) were my recent additions.

Will get Super Mario World and possibly Zelda: LttP. I think I should play that one again. Been a long while.

I was surprised by the lack of selection and pricey-ness of X-Box Live Arcade games. I'm happy with the Virtual Console. Online multiplayer support is all that's left to add.

WARNING!!!!!!!

Do not buy Super Mario World unless you have a classic controller!!!

If you use a Gamecube on playing it is HELL!

I so called that in one of the first few posts. No way you can run and jump with a GameCube controller.

If a person doesn't see any VC titles they would like to play (not likely in my opinion as some of the greatest games of all time are already in the list), and there aren't any Wii titles they want to check out, they can always go get a wavebird and a few used gamecube titles. I was able to come up with about 10 GC games that I hadn't played but wanted too.

This, on top of my list of 50 VC titles that I want to download and list of Wii games I want to check out will keep me very busy for a very long time. If a person can't find at least a few games to play on the Wii with its already big catelog (Wii, VC, GC) then they probably should trade it in for a Sony or MS product...That being said, I can't imagine a person like this...Man, go get Kirby, you know you want him. Or does his pinkness offend your masculinity?

Not 100% relevant, but I have to ask...

Has anyone else played multiplayer MarioKart 64? Has anyone else noticed the slowdown by about 30%? It's completely noticable- you move slower, your weapons pop out slower, everything's affected. This almost ruins the experience... it no longer has that classic hectic feel to it. Is there any fix?

Bought Mario World now. Picked up 4000 points from Woolworths (only 27 quid) so I should be sorted for a few weeks now. Now Mario World is out I doubt I'll get Donkey Kong Country.
Funny too, I bought Kirbys Adventure for 7.99 boxed a few months ago and soon the VC will have it for a much nicer fiver. Really love that game

Oh and we need Zelda: LttP too.

Mario World is just too incredible. I played the GBA version since I didn't own a SNES, it's so much more difficult and the music and sounds are miles better. Plus the Classic Controller is just perfect for SNES games. Really enjoying this. Best game ever? Could be a good poll option ;)

I'm not sure about a 30% slowdown, but the original game for the N64 did run at noticeably different speeds in battle mode, depending on the number of players and battle course selected. For instance, a 2-player Skyscraper game was really fast compared to 3-player Block Fort game. Since it's being emulated, some of this is probably preserved. However, maybe the recent bug fix corrected it?

Speaking of bugs and bug fixes, I wonder if they caught the one on Skyscraper? If you play long enough, occasionally the connecting tunnels will change to become completely "solid", so you can no longer jump into them from the outside (passing through the side wall), and instead bounce off and fall into the pit. I'm assuming the first behavior was the correct one (i.e. you should be able to jump through the wall), because it seemed to be the default, but you never know.

1. I'm not usually one to preach but unless you own the original carts, emulation (not sanctioned by the property owner) is illegal and wrong.

Not if the copyrights have expired, or trademarks in some cases. And I have spent over $7500 on anime dvds. I could have easily downloaded most of that, but why?

2. I don't have my Mac hooked up to my 42" TV, and the VC titles work with controllers that are pretty much the same as the originals. I hook up my MBP to my 60" lcos 1080p set running at 1920x1080 and use a ps2 controller. Perfect combo! :D

Dude, look up copyright expirations on Wikipedia, because either you're wrong, or you've traveled here from the future to tell us who won the console wars. Corporate copyrights expire 95 years after date of first publication or 120 years after date of creation, whichever comes first.

And trademarks don't even apply to whether you can emulate legally. Unless you're going around calling yourself Princess Peach, trademarks don't apply at all.

Maybe I misunderstood, then. Perhaps it's just a voluntary thing a lot of companies do after so many years go by. (Freespace for example.)

Either way, almost all the roms I play I do own original nes/snes carts for but they're in boxes. I do have a working SNES but not a working NES. :( I also play a lot of Japanese games not released here.

Assuming your HDTV does not lag, I think MK64 drops the frame rate to 30 FPS for multiplayer and single player is 60 FPS. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but that was kind of the "cheat" programmers used for multiplayer in some games. The framerate is dropped.

I haven't noticed any lag when playing MK64 with my sister one weekend.

Its cool that you hook your laptop up to your TV but alot of people don't have a laptop so it isn't ideal for them. Also, most people probably still don't own the carts so it is pirating for them. And the PS2 controller isn't perfect for playing old school Nintendo titles....The classic controller might not be either but it is closer to perfect...I was having the hardest time with Gunstar Heroes' 2nd level until I got the classic controller...For some reason it made the difference...

I never said that Super Mario RPG is the best game ever but it is an expensive cart and is a bargain for $5 compared to ebay prices. It is adored by many though...It is the most requested game on the Nintendo Nsider forums...

Any idea what the bug fix does?

Not sure, I don't have the game...You should be able to Google it though...I think you download it through the VC...

I'm not sure about the list that was posted but I wouldn't trust any source other than Nintendo (maybe the ESRB rated ones) on what will come out....Certainly they are all possibilities for this quarter and the entire catelog on every console is a possibility in the future. I wouldn't even rule out Rare games as agreements can be made on these things...

having the original game does not make emulation legal.

Can I Download a Nintendo ROM from the Internet if I Already Own the Authentic Game?

There is a good deal of misinformation on the Internet regarding the backup/archival copy exception. It is not a "second copy" rule and is often mistakenly cited for the proposition that if you have one lawful copy of a copyrighted work, you are entitled to have a second copy of the copyrighted work even if that second copy is an infringing copy. The backup/archival copy exception is a very narrow limitation relating to a copy being made by the rightful owner of an authentic game to ensure he or she has one in the event of damage or destruction of the authentic. Therefore, whether you have an authentic game or not, or whether you have possession of a Nintendo ROM for a limited amount of time, i.e. 24 hours, it is illegal to download and play a Nintendo ROM from the Internet.

aidanpendragon

having the original game does not make emulation legal.

Lemme guess...that's the Nintendo boilerplate, right? They'll give you as balanced an opinion on ROMs as the MPAA will on ripping DVDs you own for backup, laptop, iPod, etc. - that is, not balanced at all, and entirely in their own interest. Common sense, not Nintendo's lawyers, should tell you what constitutes "fair use."

At least the VC gets close to the iTunes model: have a reliable product at a decent price, and people will do the right thing. Now if they could only work on the cost and some games' functionality...

While I understand the sentiment, "common sense" isn't really the issue here. With the DMCA in place, there aren't many legal options for making copies of ROM's.

I like how Nintendo will get its panties in a bunch over ROMs - but (how quickly) do they do anything against physical piracy?

I actually called the Nintendo anti-piracy line once. Was in a (major DC) mall, in EB, looked out, and saw a kiosk selling, apparently, Super Mario Bros. On closer inspection, it was a "100 NES ROMs crammed into a cheap Chinese gizmo that plugs into your TV" device, complete with knockoff N64 controller and zapper. Emulation was pretty poor, too. All for $39.99 or some such! The stand-keeper was very complicit in all this - first he claimed loudly that it was "legal," then got very defensive and said "nobody can stop me," basically.

People making money off rampant piracy is one thing I can't abide. That they'd have the stones to do so in the heart of a major mall (in front of EB, no less!) - not at some ramshackle flea market - was even more surprising. I promptly went home and called Nintendo with all the specifics. The guy on the other end was interested, but far from surprised or even excited.

End result: that kiosk was there for many more months before it eventually went away. With all the vigor Nintendo goes after free ROM sites with ceast-and-desist letters, you think they'd rapidly act to shut down someone actually selling their IP. As a result of all this, I remain a little jaded about Nintendo's frothing over ROMs.

Back to the actual thread topic, VC: I've gladly put my money where my mouth is and bought lots of SNES VC games (as have most people here), even if easier & free alternatives exist. I think that's only fair.

That doesn't apply for Mario Kart fans. Or Kid Icarus password fans. Hell, it doesn't apply for the crappy, graphics-filtered TG-16 emulation. This isn't console-perfect yet.

If "common sense" = being cheap and stealing, then yes, emulation is common sense.

If "common sense" = having a copy of something I already paid $49.99 for in 1989, then yes, that's common sense. If "common sense" = pulling a copy of a DVD you own so you can run it on your laptop or iPod, or protect it from your kids, then yes, that's common sense.

If "common sense" = following companies' interpretations of what constitutes fair use to the letter, then no, that's not common sense. Corporate sense, maybe, but not common sense.

Is there much of a distinction between A. having ROMs for games you own and B. ripping CDs you own onto your computer? Both involve putting content you paid for onto a different medium. If there isn't a distinction - and I don't think there is, reasonably - then "ripping CDs you own" = "being cheap and stealing," to extend the earlier formulation.

[We'll leave aside that ROM copiers are illegal, whereas CD drives & iTunes - or VCRs, or TiVO - are legal.]

Getting back to the topic at hand - "What VC games are you guys buying that are out now?" - anything that I enjoy but don't already own.

I've also seen various reviews saying the graphics look oddly filtered, that there may be some audio problems, and that some people think the game feels laggy/slowed-down compared to the cart. It's enough that, together, I decided against getting this one, when I'd been planning to.

It's not so much that I care about Mario 64, but I've been pretty steamed at the uneven TG-16 emulation, and to see issues creep into other consoles isn't the direction Nintendo should be going.

Hate to burst your bubble, but AFAIK ripping games for backup is legal. Downloading them isn't. That isn't your game, that's somebody elses. His/her game was never in your possession. Though owning the device to rip carts is illegal. Or can you apply your ideology to owning the VHS version of a film so you're perfectly allowed to download the DVD version for free?

Oh and the games/emulators are perfect too. I've hit the same bugs in Super Mario Bros, I can't tell exactly (for some reason the Wii picture is a tiny bit bigger than my TV so it misses off the edges) but it looks like they've fixed the NES scrolling bug. Same for Sonic. They're even limted to the 576i versions released all them years ago. Us PAL users even get the full speed Super Mario Bros and no SNES/GBC slowed down version. Short of the Ghost save data (no memory card after all) it's there. Slowdown is in the right places, bugs, glitches. all there for me.

I get your distinction between downloading vs. ripping...unfortunately, as we both recognize, you can't get a cart ripping device, which is illegal for some silly reason (CD ripping, video recording are not). Wouldn't say that having a VHS "entitles" you to a DVD download, as the two can have wide differences in quality. Don't mean to unduly prolong this line of discussion...

Glad to hear a first-hand account on MK64 & that it works properly.
Like I keep saying: make it work, for a good price, and they will come.

holy crap...

We are aware that there are some very successful Japanese franchises that have a small following in the US, and that they could never be reached by putting these products out at retail. We're open to games released in Japan if we can get them translated properly.

I would seriously pay 3000 points for either of the SNES Fire Emblems.

Wow.
Good news, and only 50 mins left till us Europeans get our VC update! I swear if LttP is out tonight I'm cracking open the Coke Cola bottle I was saving for an all-nighter. But hell if the Wii has taught us anything, it's that Nintendo is good at pulling surprises (who'd have thought interactive weather would be fun, or polling). I'd love a sneaky Super Metroid.

EDIT: they're out! it's a shame too. I was just getting used to the free time I've had.
Excitebike, Kirby's Adventure, New Adventure Island AND R-TYPE 3.

Haha I bet. I'm actually liking this Wii games drought. That said we do get ExciteTruck tomorrow, explains why Excitebike is on the VC at least.

Or the original Metroid.....I'd love for them to release either :)

Zelda 2
Castlevania 1-3
SMB 2 & 3
Metroid and Super Metroid

These are the games I am wanting most right now :)

having the original game does not make emulation legal.

Not that I wanted to add this emulation debate, but...

That's interesting. Looks like Nintendo updated their FAQ and actually give you the honest statement. It used to be ROMs were illegal, period. Now they actually tell you if you made the backup yourself, it's a different story.

The statement probably changed because of a dispute with Console Classix. It's an online service (which to my surprise is still alive after all these years) which has some intricate system that basically is an emulator connected to an Internet database of ROMs. I say it's intricate because they backed up ever game personally and had a way of the game not being copied on to the user's computer, thereby not being illegal.

Sadly no, Nintendo later on puts the kibosh on that:

"Are Game Copying Devices Illegal?

Yes. Game copiers enable users to illegally copy video game software onto floppy disks, writeable compact disks or the hard drive of a personal computer. They enable the user to make, play and distribute illegal copies of video game software which violates Nintendo's copyrights and trademarks. These devices also allow for the uploading and downloading of ROMs to and from the Internet. Based upon the functions of these devices, they are illegal."

Again, part of my problem with Nintendo. Any copy is considered by nature an "illegal copy," and because the devices "allow for" the potential of uploading games, the copiers themselves "are illegal." This is the same argument movie studios made against Sony & VCRs in the early 1980s - because VCRs might be used to make illegal copies, the hardware is thus illegal in and of itself. Studios lost that; I can't see how Nintendo's argument is much different.

As for the "backup/archival copy exception," Nintendo indeed must think it "a very narrow limitation": because game copiers and game copies are both, in their opinion, illegal, it's entirely unclear how one would/could make a legal backup/archival copy. I've read elsewhere that Nintendo argues the backup clause relates to early floppy disks, not game consoles.

...Once more returning to the real topic at hand: I noticed IGN's guesswork list of VC releases has lost many entries - all the light gun games and probably some more. That's deflated some of my hope for actually seeing Duck Hunt, etc. workable on the VC. Bully for IGN, for earlier taking everything on the ESRB list and randomly giving it a "January 2007" VC release date. Good journalism there, guys. At least they've corrected themselves.

I've never played these 2 so close together before, but how much better is R-Type 1 compared to 3? It seems much more precise, there are less frills. Music seems about the same, all except the boss battle music in 3 - horrendous.

The variation in the weapons is a good touch, I got to the level 2 boss with the first one, but couldn't get far with the other 2 weapon modes.

Now give us R-Type 2! What console was that originally launched on? Its a shame they probably wont get the higher colour palette version seen on the Amiga.

Fingers crossed for a new Arcade console I suppose. Oo, if they did that then I might finally be able to play R-Type Leo.
