Not yet in America. So what do the people who can get it think about it? Any "big" sites not work with it?

It's probably not out yet. The Weather Channel didn't come on at midnight, it was sometime in the morning. Opera will probably be the same. There's still 13 hours or so (depending on the time zone they use) where they can put it out "today."

got it downloaded this morning - only had a quick go on it before leaving the house, but I was a bit underwhelmed... what happened to being able to resize it so everything is clearly visable? You need to be sitting very close to (and squint a little) at the MR page to read the text.... here's hoping I just missed a zoom feature...
Still, as free browsers go its a nice addition, and simple to use...

doh.. when i posted prev message i hadn't gone downstairs yet (where my wii is).. saw the blue light flashing and voila.. was up and running on the opera browser within a few minutes.
can't comment much, but from what I can see, the fonts etc.. are very hard to read..
is that cos its hooked up to my tv?
its a similar in natuer to when i hook my laptop to my tv and attempt to web browse - not a good experience :)
i just have a regular 32" CRT.. no HD digital stuff yet.. but will that actually make a difference?
thanks

I had a mess around with this briefly about 1am this morning.
Rendering and page layout seems great, largely because Nintendo went with an established browser vendor rather than trying to roll their own. Zoom's handy, but I'm not quite sold on moving around the page by 'grabbing' with the B button. I'll give it a go again today and see if it was just tiredness that was making me cranky with it!
[edit]
Oh, and call me a nerd ("nerd!") but I'm going to a bit of packet sniffing (fnarr!) later to see if the Wii's browser is connecting directly to the sites we visit, or if it's going via a Nintendo-run proxy. I'm 99% sure it's direct, but I like knowing what these 'black-box' style systems are doing :)

After seeing the pics on engadget with the Internet Channel running on a Sammy LCD - and looking thoroughly usable - I'm looking forward to there being a release of some decent Wii "lounge" keyboards being released - laptop sized keyboard with all of the Wiimote keys on the side...
As there are recharging stations for the Wiimotes already coming out, hopefully some manufactures will be all over this...

Surprisingly usable so far.
Anyone know if there is a way to hide the buttons bar? Takes up precious real estate, especialy with webpage being usually designed in a vertical fashion.

i've been reading this: http://www.opera.com/pressreleases/en/2006/12/22/
Nintendo is currently offering a free trial of Opera for Wii which is now available for download. The release of the final version of the Opera browser for Wii is currently scheduled for late March 2007. Opera for Wii will remain a free download until June 30, 2007. After June 30, Opera will be available for download from the Wii Shop Channel for 500 Wii points. Users who download Opera before June 30, 2007, can continue to use the browser at no cost for the lifetime of the Wii system.
does this mean that if you purchase it later it'll only last a year? six months? three hours? 11min 39secs?
hmm.
i think webpage scrolling should be done by throwing your arms about. :D

[...] i think webpage scrolling should be done by throwing your arms about. :D
I think webpage scrolling should be like the maps in Zelda. So far, in Opera, pressing [B]+"dragging" the page seems less intuitive than pressing [B]+"moving" the page (hard to describe the difference).
With Zelda I get the real feeling of moving the map around. In Opera I get the feeling of "asking" the browser to move the page around, going to the edges of the screen and all. Not comfortable. I do understand that webpages could be much taller than a Zelda map though, so maybe that's a compromise.

Not really sure what you're confused about. From that press release it seemed clear that they meant if you download the program before June 30th then it is completely free and won't be a temporary program. So get it before then and you'll get the full channel for free with no downsides!

Some issues.
1 ) obviously a lot of media files dont play (quickime, wmv)
2) why wont it let me full screen, I dont need tha blinking big toolbar border taking up a quarter of the screen all the time
Anyone know if there is a way to hide the buttons bar? Takes up precious real estate, especialy with webpage being usually designed in a vertical fashion.
No way of hiding it, and it really is a pain.
3) flash 8/9 dont work
4) no home button ? why not
5) the button 2 to make everything load vertically so its easier to read they say ? but in reality it just screws up the page. So why bother ? make the button do somthing more useful
6) scrolling is poor/unresponsive. They need to make it more sensative, like in mii plaza. Dragging to the extreme edge to get some small movement, give me a break.
I think webpage scrolling should be like the maps in Zelda. So far, in Opera, pressing [B]+"dragging" the page seems less intuitive than pressing [B]+"moving" the page (hard to describe the difference).
exactly that's what I mean.
7) no auto complete. With the wii's method of entering data taking more time than a keyboard, autocomplete would be a real benefit
Needs a fair bit of work to be really useful, hopefully things like the latest flash, and better interface and a full screen option to hide the tool bar.

You probably didn't notice this, but your G4 is no where near the performance of later PPCs. ;) My G5 is 2 years old and that site runs great on it at 2560x1600.
But before I ramble, that site is poorly optimized. It requires about 80% CPU load when in the foreground. That's a joke. And that's why it's taxing your Mini. This site unnecessarily taxes any system..
Just for reference, I tried it on my MDD G4 DP 1.25 running at 1440x900 and it has some hicups, but my comp is 4 years old, so I wouldn't expect it to perform as well, especially for a site that was poorly produced. On my 3 year old XP3200, which is plugged into the same LCD, the site runs better than the G4, but it still has some hiccups.
You have to be realisitic. Flash does run great on a PPC. It's up to the developer to optimize the site properly for a wider range of comps. Most of these guys, like the peeps that made the site you listed, don't even care to check the CPU load, and will leave "dozens" of unccessary loops running in the backgroung. A good Flash Site should idle at 0-10% CPU load when in the background, even when playing video not freaking 60% like that abomination. 10% only if you have more than one SWF on a page. An occasional spike above that is OK, as long as it returns back to a low percentage.
Also, if you don't already know this, FireFox is slower than Safari when it comes to Flash.
I wish the Wii supported Flash 8. I certainly hope the final Opera release will offer it. If not At least it doesn Flash 7.

Dot.Tunes is looking for a quicktime plugin which you can't get. At http://www.dot.tunes.net/wii there are instructions for getting a flashplayer...It is playing the songs on mine but no sound is coming out...hopefully this will be figured out because I think it is really cool to stream content to the Wii.

* Step 4 - Click Admin Controls to view the Advanced functions including the Flash Control Center.
* Step 5 - Finally, use the Flash Controls to select which artist, album or playlist you would like to stream, how many tracks to display etc.

I'm sure they will get it working...If they give the option to replace the quicktime player on the main page with the flash player it would be awesome..
This site: http://www.redkawa.com/mediacenters/wiimediacenterx/
is working on an Opera media center program which will play music, photos, and flash movies but it still doesn't work yet...
Update: Ok, I got it to work for me too! It still is finicky on what songs it will play and I'm not sure what the difference is but I emailed the developer and they are working on it. I also asked if they might be able to offer the flash player out on the main page instead of the quicktime one as well. If you have any questions email Jeff at team@dotpod.net as that is who has been responding to my emails. I don't know if 30 bones is worth it to register the app but if they add video and picture support it might be.
Good Luck

Hi all,
Jeff here from DOT.TUNES
I am working around the clock to make improvements to the DOT.TUNES Wii functionallity and I'll keep you posted on developments. We work on DOT.TUNES full time so you can expect constant updates and improvements.
I should mention that the issues we are all experiencing with the DOT.TUNES Flash player not playing all tracks is more to do with the Opera browser and Flash 7 than with DOT.TUNES. As you may have noticed the DOT.TUNES Flash Player works fine on your Mac via a web browser but the Opera browser is beta, it uses Flash 7 and has memory issues. The Flash Player attempts to pull the track and it fails and we have very limited debug info to track down if it is Opera or Flash which fails.
I am now working with the Opera developers to get it sorted.
Please keep me posted on your developments as any additional info will certainly help.
Thanks
Jeff
