1) OKAMI - PS2 Capcom (game of the year)
Simply stunning adventure title that features so much innovation and creativity and techincal marvel it's a surprise the PS2 is powering it.
Having played through this marvel, it made Zelda TP a little lackluctre IMO.
2 ) G.R.A.W - Xbox360 Ubisoft
Take the first of the next gen consoles, apply a huge graphical boost, introduce great AI, Physics, Storyline, Graphics, Innovation, Sound and deep rich gameplay and cram it into not only a tight singleplayer, but 4 player co-op and rich online mulitplayer too.
Fantastic tactical shooter.
3) LOCO ROCO - PSP Sony
The perfect example of a game suiting its format and that orginality can sell games. A beautifully crafted game alround and possibly the best soundtrack on the planet. I wonder if I can have a loco song at my funeral :)
Just when you thought it was safe to leave the psp lingering on the shelf, loco saves the day.
4) OBLIVION - Xbox360/PC
Re-defining the RPG with a beautiful vast living breathing world. Giving players the option to be good or evil in a more successful way that fable or black & white ever managed to achieve.
With a great single player story hat players can freely divert or completely abandon from, and still find 100's of hours of rich rewarding gameplay.
Thousands of NPC's all voiced. Massive world all on a single DVD (who needs BluRay?)
Simply a Great game.
5) Brain Age - Nintendo DS
It was a close call between this and Wii Sports, but brain age got there sooner. A fine example of how a 'game' can appeal to a wider audience if marketed and targeted correctly.
A great game that has left hundread of thousands of people feeling inadequate about their mental prowess.

Chose 5? this will be hard. On initial thought I haven't played many good games this year.
1. Castlevania DS
Forget best of 06, this is tied for my fave game ever. All down to the beautiful music.
2. Cave Story (PC)
Again, the music made this. Melodic and memorable.
That's the best I can do :o nothing really stands out this year for me at all. A few games were alright, a few started off excellent but dwindled.

1. Zelda Twighlight Princess- Even though it should have had voice acting and better graphics IMO, it is still the best Zelda ever and my game of the year.
2. Gears of War - The cover system is awesome, the graphics are awesome, but I wish it had better offline multiplayer. Sometimes I don't want to have to have a lan party to play against my friends. Still it is a great game in the shooter category.
3. Rainbox Six: Vegas- Its simply awesome to run and gun in casinos!
4. Guitar Hero II - Ill admit i don't actually own this game because I don't have a PS2 but I have played it a bunch and it is super fun. Probably the most fun game I have played in a long time.
5. Wii Sports - I wanted to put a handheld game on my list but i realized that most of my favorite DS games (Trauma Center, Advance Wars) came out last year. Wii Sports is simply the most fun free game of the year. Sure it has its problems, but as party games go, it will keep you entertained for a long time.
Honorable mentions: Brain Age, Yoshi's Island DS, Okami, Prey, Viva Pinata, Oblivion

In no order
Madden 07 For the Wii(The others I think would not be for me)-I've never liked sports games, last Madden I got was Madden 02, and it was a gift, possible that was bought in a bundle with my NGC. But I'm loving the free motions on the Wii
COD3 for the Wii(Again I'm sure COD3 is fun on other system, but I don't think it would make my list)-I've gotten stuck on a part, and since then start playing some other games but its SO much fun shooting Nazis with the Wii Remote.
Wii Sports for the Wii-Wow for such a simple games it TONS of fun.
Gears of War for xBox 360- I played it when my friend brought his X360 over and its one hello of a shooter. When I pick a 360 up its on my list of games to get.
New Super Mario Brothers- What can I say, I like Mario Side Scrollers, I liked this game.
Other Good games-Yoshi's Island, Red Steel, R:FoM, Club House Games DS

1. Zelda TP - Wii - Great story, hours of play, really a showcase for the Wii
2. Madden 2007 - Wii - Sports game of the year imho, the Wii adds a new level of play to it.
3. Resistance - PS3 - Interesting storyline, great graphics and sound, overall the best FPS out for any console. Hours of gameplay, it isn't a quick game to beat unlike other games where the developer ran out of space on the small DVD disc with the HD content *cough* GoW *cough*.
4. New Super Mario Bros - DS - It's me Mario! Brings back that old time feeling :D
5. GTA: Vice City Stories - PSP - I am a sucker for the 80's, loved the game play.

I suppose I can offer, and sorry to alter the idea of the thread, a list of games I'm most looking forward to in 2007 because 2006 (and probably even 2005 IMO too) were drab years in gaming. DS digging itself into a rut, 360 being nothing more than a mix of a PC and original Xbox, Gamecube being virtually dead, PSP being sold 3 days after purchase.
Wii Sports
I've only played a bit of this but it single handedly (quite literally too) was more enjoyable than anything I've played on the 360, the DS or PC.
Pokemon Diamond/Pearl
First RPG I got into. Love the formula, though I think the environments could do with a huge overhaul, the square based system looks a little old now. Still, it's gameplay that counts and that's why I'm looking forward to another 30 hour RPG.
Twilight Princess
Fan of the series. Perfect mixture of art direction, music and gameplay. If I could only choose one game in this list it would be TP.
Metroid Prime 3
Final game in the Prime series, that alone gains my interest. The little story they've been building up of this radioactive substance that corrupts is so B-Movie-ish, but the games are so atmospheric, so immersive, so beautiful they get away with it. Story takes 2nd place to everything else, but with the promise of the phazon being detailed as to it's origins etc is just tantalising.
Halo 3
Is it out next year? I'm not bothered about all this crappy hype, I don't care about documentary's, or backstories. Halo 1 won me over because it didn't tie too much to the enemy's backstories. Halo 2 let me down more than any other video game has, not quite continuing with the pinnacle that was Halo 1. Maybe that was the problem? Maybe they should have left a sequel a good long time, Halo was about being revolutionary. The sequel is more the same, enter the problem. But we'll see. Halo 3 is the game that can really push me to buy a 360 as Halo 1 did with the first Xbox. I just hope it can contend with the likes of Half Life 2 and FEAR. This isn't blind excitement.

1)Viva Pinata
All for 360 except brain training
viva pinata was at number 6 on my list. I love that game so much. So refreshing on the 360. I had Chromehounds lingering in the background too. Was relativly shallow single player but the multiplayer was absolutely awesome, and I dont normally go in for mech games at all, but ended up with over 100hours online with that game.
2006 was a great year for gaming. :)

Jimmi, probably for the same reasons that people buy huge trucks and have no commercial purpose for it.

Honestly, I can only think of one game, but then again, I only really bought one game.
1) Mario Kart DS
Yep, I'm that lame. :D
EDIT: 500th Post! And it only took me a little over 2 years and a purchase of a Mac!

Because he doesn't understand anything else. Why do you think he considers the US a fascist country? ;)
Anyways, my top five games for this year are Rainbow Six: Vegas, Civilization IV, Gears of War, Call of Duty 3, and Splinter Cell: Double Agent.

1) Mariokart DS (DS) - played this game for hours and hours and hours, the online play is great fun and a sweet addition to a realll fun game.
2) NCAA 07 (PS2) - love this game, does an excellent job of faithfully recreating the college football game. Tons of teams!
3) Fifa 07 (PS2) - another great sports game...
4) WoW (PC) - didn't play it that much this year as I decided this game is a little too addictive and time consuming but still a fun game nonetheless.
5) Clubhouse games (DS) - just tons of card games, board games and arcade style games. Really fun.

Nothing lame about one of the best multiplayer/single player games made. ;)
This game alone probably helped Nintendo sell a billion more DSs, just to exaggerate quite a bit. :)

Zelda: Twilight Princess
Worth buying a Wii or GameCube just to play it. Proof that the Wii concept includes games that are large in scope.
Mario Kart DS
Great graphics, control, variety.. It would be perfect if it were not for those losers who drop out of online races.
Nintendogs
Accessible to anyone and infinitely playable. Best relaxation game.
Metroid Prime: Pinball
The best video game pinball on any format because it uses the best bits of both formats; eg. multi-ball, ramps, power-ups, bosses, etc. The Rumble Pack that comes with it is icing on a very tasty cake.
Trauma Centre: Under the Knife
Unlike most games the aim is to save lives. Very immersive and the touch-screen control feels completely intuitive.

Hmmm...
5. Something on the Wii - (Wii)
I'm not sure whether this slot is going to Zelda TP or to Red Steel at the minute. Or just the console itself. But I've just got it a couple of days back and the control system makes two otherwise 'normal' games magical.
4. New Super Mario Bros. (DS)
A great 2D side scroller platform game. Love these in any format and Mario just works.
3. Lego Star Wars II (360)
This game has given me hours and hours of playtime as I work towards getting 100% completion on it. I'm not there yet but I'm sure once I'm back at uni I'll get it done!
2. Rainbow Six: Vegas.(360)
This was very nearly gears of War, but the only thing that blew me away on GoW was how fluid the cover system was. Then R6:V came along with cover, and snake cams, and real solid teamwork and shot GoW straight down for me.
And the big Number one...
1. Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon - Advanced Warfighter (360)
This is the game that got me involved on the 360 to start with. An accidental purchase of sorts with a bundle but got me onto Xbox Live and then playing with my clan. At the time truely revolutionary, and still solid to this day.

LOL. Exactly the same here. It was this game that got me really playing on Live and its where I met the people from the clan I later joined :D
Amazing clan game. :) Probably Xbox Live & Clan gaming has been the most memorable gaming moments of 2006.

3. tetris ds
4. guitar hero ii
5. loco roco
my copy of twilight princess is sitting on my shelf unopened. i really really want to add that game to this list, but the lack of a wii is preventing me from doing so. :(
