It is! It is in the software update. It's a small download, and as mentioned in the page 2 posts I believe that it fixes most USB hub crashes.

Apple sure is busy with updates today without the benefit of an Expo. Apple execs did say they were getting away from big Expo announcements and bringing out new products when they are ready.

And who said Apple would not address a specific game in an update?
"What's the difference between 10.2.5 and 10.2.6?"

Yeah that's what I was wondering, where is UT2K3, there is already an update for it and nobody has it. I guess they really want the demo to be the best it can be.

At 6.1 MBs, this soon after 10.2.5, and looking at the "enhancments", it sounds more like a bug fixing patch than an "update". Not that I'm complaining, I was just hoping the next "update" would bring iChat into the world of decent chat apps.

Very quickly posted after 10.2.5, though.

Me too. I'm actually hoping the rumors of H.323 support are true -- while ohphoneX works, it's still somewhat buggy. Hopefully, the next (native) app in the XMeeting suite will be much better.
I don't know if I'll even install 10.2.6, since none of the addressed issues even remotely affect me.

So, does this mean that support for various phones is handled through the OS rather than iSync?
And, if so, why don't they add some more phones, dammit!

normally I would be downloading this update right this very minute, but I think I'm going to pass 10.2.6 by. It seems like a quick bug-fix rather than a real "enhancement" type update. I'm not really complaining or anything, 'cause this was pretty unexpected right now anyway. Heck, I JUST read on Railheaddesign.com that a build of 10.2.6 was released to developers not long ago. I see now why it came out so quick- being a bug-fix and all.
I'm going to pass, because OS X.2.5 works just fine by me at the moment, and I'm afraid this will only gum things up on my PM (Hey, it can happen!). So if it doesn't offer anything relevant to me, then why bother, right?
Mudbug
May 6, 2003, 04:42 PM
I'm downloading it now, seeing as how I had a kernel panic about half an hour ago, and it took 10 MINUTES to reboot. Musta been somethin' nasty - fonts started acting screwy, then kaput. Hope this fixes it.

does this mean that an unreal demo is right around the corner? i have been forced to *gasp* play it on my friend's pc.
yes, it's tough to admit that.

May 6, 2003, 04:49 PM
Absolutely.
I will refrain from installing this update, too. Why bother with it. I am still waiting for the overdue iSync update. If anyone of you has got a good idea how to backup data from my P800 phone - please speak out loud.
Problems are:
? No iSync functionality
? Adressbook doesn't work with it
? I cannot browse my P800 via bluetooth
? P800 cannot see my iBooks internet-connection via USB
? No nothing
The only thing that works is sending single (!) files via bluetooth - apart from an annoying error message.
In a nutshell, 10.2.6 is no good for me and I won't risk to harm my iBook in any way. Never change a running system, unless... yes, unless it supports my P800.

I won't be installing it, either. I have had a lot of problems resulting from system updates over the past two months. I downgraded my version of Jag and things got much better. Now I fear updates, instead of looking forward to them.
Also, when the hell is Apple going to release some bug fixes for Core MIDI and Core Audio? Am I the only one who thinks it's foolish to leave the pro audio market with a half-finished solution?

I don't know about you guys, but I'm pretty psyched about the upcoming T610: http://www.sonyericsson.com/t610/
with that and SEC (Sony Ericsson Clicker) - you've got a sweet bluetooth system.
Not sure when it's coming out though. I think I read that it will be called T616 in North America (due to different GSM Bands) and will be out Q2 2003 aka anytime now. I was going to get the T68i through that amazon deal where you got the free phone with a 1 year T-mobile service, but I wasn't impressed with the mixed reviews of the phone. When I heard about the T610, I figured I'd wait. The guy that developed SEC seems psyched about the phone too:

Well, if we start seeing updates come out like that, then maybe we'll even see, in a few years, version 10.10.220, where, not only can we get all the music we want for $.99 (per song), but we can also make all the long distance phone calls we want for the same amount... :D ;)

UT2K3!!!!!! I CANT WAIT!!!
Anyway, I would like to update to 10.2.6 (I'm running 10.2.4), but the Combo Update is 84.4MB and I have 56k. Last time I remember, the 10.2.5 update is only 40+MB, and if the 10.2.6 Update is less than 10MB, then that'd only be about 50Mb to DL.
Should I DL the updates separately, or just get the Combo? Is there any difference?
One more thing, I have a FEELING that UT2K3 is coming soon, why else would it be in the kbase article??
edit:
Not fair http://forums.macrumors.com/images/smilies/frown.gif ....they removed the 10.2.5 update. But I guess it's for the benefit of the public; it was causing problems....

The T610 will cost around $300 with 2 year contracts and $400 with a one year. The p800 is now down to $550 retail to own it outright, so expect the T610 to be pretty affordable by Christmas.

It looks like from this article:
http://www.phonescoop.com/articles/semc_2003/index.php?p=2
that the T616 won't be out until Q3.
There's pictures of a presentation from a couple months ago, so that seems pretty reliable info.

Warning! Not using your mac under 10.2.6 will cause kernel panics.
1. I updated to 10.2.6
2. Restarted computer
3. Launched Safari
4. Did not browse any pages.
5. Left the computer to go watch 24.
6. Came back to discover that I had a kernel panic while I was away.
7. Posted this.
8. Going to repair permissions.
9. Note: I have no USB connections other than a Logitech dual laser mouse. Could this be my problem?
10. Will post results after repairing permissions.

If your on 10.2.4 then you can repair permissions whithout using your disk.
Just goto Disk Aid in your Util folder, then choose to repair permissions...you dont even have to restart.

What's wrong with them? I can't say I know of too many complaints, especially after 10.2.3. Plus, apparently plenty of people (Steinberg/Pro Tools/Logic/MOTU (soon) users) seem to think Jag works fine for audio...but I don't use OS X for audio on a regular basis, so I wouldn't have any direct experience with any problems.

I just had my first problem with Mail the other day, but it was after a...kernel panic I guess? First time since I installed Jaguar that it freaked out, but I was low on HD space and was running iTunes all night...anyway...it was more of a widespread problem.
It only remembered my (expired) .Mac email account, and I had to import all my other mail -- which wasn't too hard -- and re-input my account info.
Other than that it has a tendancy to ask for keychain permission more often than one would expect for an "always allow" answer.
But other than that it's been good. I just hope they make it more powerful. I don't know about "full of bugs" either...
Edit: BTW, I'm so damn happy not to have to use Outlook anymore I'll take a few non-fatal errors every once in a while. Just a few more security fixes in Safari and we'll all be MS FREE! YAY! My painful dependancy gone for good!!!!! :D :D :D I'd like to thank Mom, Dad, Steve, and Jesus.

Of course not. These big .1 updates, like 10.1 and 10.2 get hyped for several months first and they get all the PR they can out of them. Developers can't even get 10.3 yet, and WWDC is when it will probably get it's first big developer release. Then maybe in Sept or October we'll see 10.3. I can't think of ever when Apple pulled a big OS update out of the blue and just released it.

Is this what a kernel panic looks like?
the only times I've ever had this kind of hard freeze under OS X have been when the machine is idle, with just find file apps or the screensaver running.
It's very unsettling when you leave your computer doing nothing, come back, and see this - though I must say, this last freeze (kernel panic?) happened under 10.2.5, and I haven't had any since updating yesterday

Amen! iChat is a great little program, just wished it used a real IM engine. Not a big fan of AIM and most of my friends are on ICQ still. I'd hope iChat would add support for multiple IM Clients. I know there are others out there but I've had zero luck in getting them to work. I end up using Trillian on my Windows 2000 laptop or loading three different clients on my 12" Powerbook :(

I work in areas that have confidential things in them, and if I brought a phone in with a camera, I'd probably get fired. I need my mobile phone wherever I go, I don't want a camera :(

Well, first of all, I can no longer even find my PC (Windows 2000) when browsing the local network. Nothing has changed with my PC setup, and I've tried several times to create new shares on my PC (W2K) to no avail.
When I use the shortcut I made to my PC in Connect to Server, I get a dialog box saying something like "Connecting..." and then after about a minute of this I get a kernel panic.
Other people have had similar issues with samba after upgrading to 10.2.5 according to macfixit. Some said that recreating a share or recreating permissions for the share fixes the problem, but this hasn't worked for me. In any case, something was changed in 10.2.5 that really hosed samba sharing for me.
I've emailed apple with the kernel panic text, so hopefully they'll have a fix soon (maybe a samba networking update or something like that, if not 10.2.7).

Both the S55 and my Mac can send/recieve files to each other (pictures, ringtones etc) seamlessly. And the phone also shows up in iSync - albeit as a T68i !
Ohh, that is very nice, Vanquish. So you can synchronize your Mac's Address Book and iCal to your S55? Unfortunately, I haven't seen the Siemens S55 or S57 offered in the US yet. The S55's is definitely a gorgeous phone.

Yeah man. I want even better. I want my computer to spark and blow smoke out the back when it crashes... give me SOMETHING when it crashes. C'mon Apple. Maybe even make all the lightbulbs in the room blow up or something.

I think it would be fun if you could get a midi rendition of "taps" to play when a kernel panic happens - kinda give it the ol' funeral dirge type of feel.

A followup... I got it to work by using the IP address instead of my PC's network ID (which DID work before). I guess it's a DNS thing? I don't know enough to say for sure, but if anyone's having problems similar to mine, use the IP address.

I've had the PowerBook G4 12" since Jan/Feb. 2003. Never once has it crashed/had a kernel panic.
2 days ago, I woke the computer up from sleep, "ejected" the external firewire disk, and unplugged the USB hub. As soon as I unplugged the hub, i had a kernel panic.
I saw the 10.2.6 release last night and read that it fixed kernel panics due to USB hubs in 10.2.5
I immediately downloaded it and clicked restart when optimization was done. Upon reboot, the computer started up fine. I launched a program (can't remember which) and immediately had a kernel panic. I turned it off and back on. Everything has been fine since.

Funny how Apple always states that OpenGL and Graphics have been improved. I think they just put it there so we will all update our machines.. I haven't noticed anything in the last couple of updates in terms of Quartz speed.

It's supposed to be the S56 in the US, coming to AT&T Wireless "soon" -- in "2Q03" I believe the S57 does not have bluetooth.

Yep, I just checked on the Siemens website and you're right! I suppose that the only thing you can criticise it on is the screen. I think it's the same as the T68i (101x80 pixels and only 256 col). BUT, if you're not interested in photo messaging then this shouldn't be a problem as the screen is otherwise very bright and clear.

First, my experience with 10.2.6 was good, though I haven't put my cheapo USB hub back on yet. Its main function was extending the reach of my Mac mouse, and I'm using a Logitech now. So far, so stable.
Now, the suggestion:
Since most of the problems with system updates seem to be related to permissions, why does Apple not simply make updating permissions before and after a mandatory step?
Being Apple, wtih control over the installer, they could simply check the permissions that would be most likely to go bad ...
Come to think of it, putting a permissions repair routine into cron wouldn't be such a bad idea. There are a bunch of third party patches that really, really should be part of the system.
Otherwise, Macs will only be used by power users...and all those ordinary folk, including our moms, dads, wives, husbands, or kids, will chuck 'em for the good ol' self-repairing Windows XP2 or whatever it'll be called.
(XP2 is a rather fast black and white film, by the way.)

i've had my emac for 8 months now, smooth sailing all the way. i updated to 10.2.6 yesterday, today i get a kernal panic while editing song names in itunes. is it just me or does it seem like the more OS updates that apple puts out, the more problems they create? i realize that it would be an ecological fallacy to assume that just because my computer has had problems after updating that the update itself is a sloppy piece of work...but taking in everything that people have written here about 10.2.5 and 10.2.6 i can't help but feel like apple has started taking a micro$oft attitude toward updates: put out whatever you can as fast as you can and deal with the mess later.

Been there, done that ... on the first Mac Plus, a colleague walking past my cube mentioned to me that I could get more work done on the computer if I turned it ON. That's when we both noticed smoke comming out of the top vents. I yanked the power cord out of the wall.
And the same thing happened to it's replacement too.
I am a touch typist, so I wasn't watching the characters appear on the screen.
How I don't miss the days of OS 6...

Just goto Disk Aid in your Util folder, then choose to repair permissions...you dont even have to restart.
you have to use the jag disc if you consistently get kernel panics while running apps, including disk utility. Even on a fresh install of osx. I'm at a loss... It was working before 10.2.5

AppleMatt Here's the Apple Tech Note (http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106228). If 10.2.6 is producing more kernel panics than it fixes, we should all be reporting these to Apple.

After the 10.2.6 update, my kernel panics have finally come to rest. BUT. Now the icons for items on the desktop disappear for no apparent reason whatsoever. Like for PS files - the preview shows as the icon, but come back to it 10 mins later, and the icon is gone. The type is still there, but no preview icon. Any clues? This is a new one on me...
And no, it's not someone else playing a joke on me - I'm the only one here.

tip o' the hat to you - just repairing the permissions worked fine. You'd think with all the posts in this thread about permission repairing, I'd have tried that sooner. But hey, I've been busy...

I tried to install 10.2.6 on a Power Mac G3 (Blue & white).
The machine ... cratered. Not shure how to proceed.
It starts booting, no sound, I get the apple screen with the rotating gear, I here some disk accesses, but that rotating gear just goes around & around & ...
How do I get the machine back?

Startup your computer from the Installer CD. Got to the Menubar and Run DiskUtility. Select your hard drive/partition and then
REPAIR PERMISSIONS REPAIR PERMISSIONS REPAIR PERMISSIONS
You (may) have to start over with the Jaguar CD, then update to 10.2.6 with the combo updater.
You (may) have to reformat your hard drive and start over from scratch.
Have you tried starting up while you hold down the Shift key? This will give you a "Safe Boot". If this works, then
REPAIR PERMISSIONS REPAIR PERMISSIONS REPAIR PERMISSIONS
... ya-no, I ought to automate this:
"I've got a problem with OSX, what do I do?"

It seems that 10.2.6 does not agree with Power Mac G3 350 MHz (Blue & white)
I can at least get to a blank blue screen with mouse pointer , yay
Reminds me of working with windows, but windows does have some text.
Rolling it back to 10.2.5, this has been a > day job.

You really don't expect anyone to believe that, now do you? :p
If 10.2.6 is incompatible with THE B&W, then there would be a malestrom of hate mail to Apple, and to every forum in the Mac known universe.
Admit it, you messed up something somewhere, but you refuse to accept your responsiblities. You prefer to blame the computer.
Pobody's Nerfect. I accept responsibility for my mistakes.
Sometimes, the Mac needs a thorough flushing and a re-install of everything.
Sit down calmly, have a hot beverage. Have you ever reformatted the hard drive?
Reformat you hard drive to flush out all of your mistakes. Install 10.2, then install the 10.2.6 combo. Then install all of your personal applications.
