Low iMac C2D Audio Volume

I have noticed that my iMac's audio volume is very low... For example when listening to a CD and hit the + / - to increase/decrease the sound, unless its up by 50% I can barely hear anything. Same goes for the little beeps that sounds when you increase or decrease sound, I can only hear them after the 6th notch...

Is this normal?

Assuming you are using the internal speakers and have average hearing, this is about right. The lower settings give you more control if you are piping the sound into ear buds or an external stereo.
