I brought my iBook 12" 1.33ghz in to have the trackpad replaced and when i got it back the combo drive didn't work at all. In fact the computer refused to acknowledge that it had an optical drive. I decided, instead of bringing the computer back in and waiting for another week, I would just open up the iBook and see if it was jhttp://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Mac/iBook-G4-12-Inch/Optical-Drive-Page-10-DC-In-Board
iBook G4 12" Disassembly: Installing Optical Drive - Removing DC-In Board (page 10/18)ust a loose connection. I opened up the computer, following iFixit's (previously pbfixit) directions. (http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Mac/iBook-G4-12-Inch/) The directions only specify that they are for up to the 1.2ghz model, but I figured I'd see how it went. It went fine except when I disconnecting the optical drive the part pictured below popped up out of nowhere.

I can't figure out where it goes. It is metal but the black part you see is foam. It is roughly 2 1/2 - 3 1/2 inches long.

Now after the 2 hours i spent taking it apart and trying to figure out where the random part went, I said, "screw it," and put everything back together minus this one piece. And guess what, the computer now found the optical drive, saw the blank CD that I put inside the computer about 2 months ago (when I first got my computer back), but couldn't eject it. It tried, made the eject noise, but it wouldn't come out. So now I want to bring it back to Apple. I still have about 4 days left on my original warranty so they should do it free, but I'm worried that if they open up the computer and find a part is missing that they will blame the problem on me.

So in conclusion, does anyone know exactly where this part goes?

Many thanks!

And of course, merry Christmas and holidays!

I think that may be the support bracket from the HDDrive. I opened my 12" iBook some time ago and I'm sure that when you look down at the machine with the battery compatment on the lower right the HD is on the lower left. That part is across the HDD, cushion side down. I think one of the screws holding the "tin" cover also holds that in place.

I'll try and find a photo for you. <update>This is the part I think http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/83/images_large/49.jpg from page 15/16 of the guide you used.

Hope this helps.

Oh my god macboy, you are great. I was looking all around the optical drive trying to find where that went. I was looking in the wrong place. You have made my day. I salute you.

i guess that was a good job, but you ruined the game for the rest of us...

I think we should start finding random parts, and putting up a picture, with like
"Random part from a rev. A PB 12" and see if people can guess where the part came from hahahah

it could be fun..?

Thats a fair amount of medals you have there! Which campaign(s) are they from?

Or are you kidding, and its not really you? Sorry, I get caught being gullible far more than I would like...

Or maybe we could do like the start of Thundebirds (if you are old enough to remember Thunderbirds). Post a crop of a picture of a part of a Mac and guess want the full picture shows?

Those actually aren't war medals. They are medals I received for my break-dancing achievements. At one time I was ranked 3rd in the world. Alas, after being cheated by the judges in the finals of the 2004 Break-Dance Baby! competition against my nemesis, Nacho McDopemoves, I took a vow to never bust a move again.
