Since pre-MWNY 2001. That one sure turned out to be a snoozer...

For me it was only about a year ago. And still I see no bluetooth multi button mouse, no G5 and no portable communications device!
Which sites were around 5 years ago? Why didn't I know about them?!

Simple answer - too long!!
And I still get excited about 'The Next Big Thing' that takes longer to arrive than the rumors sites say.
Another answer - long enough to have seen when MacOsRumors got things right instead of stating the bleedin' obvious and trying to pass it off as a rumor.
sigh.

Since I bought my first mac back in 1996. I needed to know more about what was available and what was going to be coming out. Been doing it ever since.

Well, okay, not Internet rumor sites. I did not have access to Web resources until I moved up to the 8100/100AV.
The amount of time between checkups was much longer then - every three to six months, typically before Apple events were scheduled.
Now, I can get a fix every few hours...
An awful, yet winderful addiction.

It seems so sad that I have been following the rumors since 1997 when Apple bought NeXT in favor of BeOS. From that time I have been watching and waiting for the right time to "switch". I can't believe it has been over 5 years for me. I feel like I have wasted so much attention while using Windows that whole time.
I have ordered a Mac 2 times now, but returned them as rumors reveal something better in the near future. Even now with the near certainty that the 970 powermacs will be delivered in August I have doubts that the value is there in Apple hardware. I very much want to use Mac OS X, but I can get everything done on Windows.
I will say this though. The 970 PowerMac and the 20 inch LCD display is what I will have on my desk in August or I will turn my back on Apple for a long, long time.

Unfortunately, if you keep waiting for the latest and greatest, you will either be never happy or you will have to upgrade about every 6 months. But I certainly understand in wanting to wait. If even half of the rumors for the next line of PowerMacs is true, then it will be quite a beautiful and powerful machine.
I'm in a similar boat, waiting for the next line of PowerMacs before upgrading from my 400 MHz PowerMac. I just visited an Apple Store for the first time a few days ago so I could compare the 20" and 23" displays. The 20" looked pretty good, but I wasn't quite sure if I should go with that or with the 23". After seeing how huge the 23" is, I decided to stick with the 20" which would fit on my small computer desk better. Sure the 23" would be nice to have, but it just seemed like overkill in my case, so the 20" should hopefully be more than enough. So, I should have a few months to save my pennies for a new system.

wow.
anyone else notices how this statistic proves how easily on gets addicted to rumors?
if there was more people in it just looking from time to time... but like this it's clear that those who just startet reading rumors will go on because there are so many that are following rumors for about several years!
it's like a birth or age pyramid (<<not sure about the word in english). or what di you think?
BTW i'm in it for 1-2 years. at least that's i am sure of.

I used to follow MacOSrumors many years ago (around 96-98). I dropped off the rumor mill for a few years and just recently found this site. The other site has deteriorated greatly since and is pretty useless now. I'm glad to see someone else has stepped up and taken its place. I'm looking forward to the PPC970 so I can have a Mac as my daily machine again, and put my only OSX machine (a way too upgraded 8600) out to pasture.
Actually, I remember reading about specs of the Apple //gs+ back in '91 or so. They were posted on fidonet.

between mac purchases (dual 500 and quicksilver 867) i checked periodically. i needed a machine that week for both purchases, so rumors had nothing to do with what i bought. but when i went mobile this year, i kept close tabs on what the tibooks were up to. it ended up saving me about $600.00. i got addicted to this site after my purchase, and registered after two months of lurking. i check in at other places, but MR and macsnaps are the only places i care to register/post.

I used to read Mac the Knife in MacWeek way back in the day. That must have been in the mid 90s, but before that, before the web even existed, I used to read "Vaporware" a text file about computer industry rumors (including Apple Computer rumors).
It used to be posted in the info-mac usenet group. I would say, it was about 1992 when I first started reading it. It is gone now

interesting that so many of us got into it with our first mac. i did before the TiBook G4 came out. that's what i was looking for, in septermber/ August of last year, is a time frame for when it would come out. my waiting paid off, but of course i stuck around :)

I started reading these rumor sites in April/May of 2002. I was looking to replace my 333Mhz iMac. I got hooked. :)

I didn't really start to look at MacRumors till last fall. Now I don't want to miss anything! ;) I'm certainly in the minority at 16.9%!

I've been hookled on rumors since System 7.5.3 came with my Performa. Looked everywhere for an update to 7.5.5. Heard all of the stories about 8.0 and Copland/Pink/etc.
I even bought an eMate!
Then there was CHRP, cloning, and the Gx series processors.
Good ol' 5300 fires.
I feel like a veteran!
What ever happened to Apple Recon? Their "Golden Convergence" prediction has turned out to be very prescient.

Its harder to pinpoint when I was searching the WEB for rumors. I was a MacWeek subscriber, and much could be gleaned from the articles there, from Mac The Knifes column, naturally, as well as the other articles.
I would even guess I might have known about the switch from beige to Platinum on the Mac Plus, my first mac, before it was announced, as I waited until the platimum model was available. I know that rumors from various sources had me looking hard at the Mac IIci as the first color mac right for me- but it didnt' prepare me for the Quadra 840 AV, which appeared within two weeks of my purchase of my first color mac, a quadra 800.
Much was gleaned from Compuserve forums, before I had a decent copy of Mosaic or Netscape to search the web for any rumor content. For years, my main bookmarks for rumors were MacOSrumors, and AppleInsider. Can't say I have gotten much useful from either of those sites since the g4 was announced.

Thank you scem0 for the spelling correction, and thank you Shadowfax for the defence.
This is not an excuse for not using perfect spelling and grammar, but here is a little information about me. I have dyslexia, disgraphia, and a whole slue of other learning disabilities. For a chunk of time my parents (and the school system) thought that I was retarded. Some 10 years out of high school I still have the spelling ability of a third grader. Spell checkers don't exactly help, as I can't tell the difference between similarly spelled words. In this case, I just didn't use a spell checker. I do get embarrassed by this, and I always appreciate any help. I have my iBook set up to read back to me what ever I type, and that helps a great deal.
The handle Eniregnat is fairly fitting, as it is both the color of my computer, and a play on my dyslexia.
