Description:: Swarms of online shoppers armed with new iPods and iTunes gift cards apparently overwhelmed Apple's iTunes music store over the holiday, prompting error messages and slowdowns of 20 minutes or more for downloads of a single song.

I had heard about this, and I wanted a song last night... it was slightly squirrelly... I don't think I was asked for my password, and I had been set up to require passwording to buy songs. And I also wasn't asked if I was sure I wanted to purchase the song, which I usually am. But the song did download fairly quickly. It just seemed to skip a few steps. Strange.

Glad to see reports of the iPod and iTMS's demise continue to be far-fetched.

I must have missed it. I purchased 5 individual songs and the movie "Cars" the day after Christmas. No problems and quick downloads.

Apple should not have let that happen. For many, it may have been their first time at the store and this is what they experience?! They're probably not going to know that it's just busy and to come back later. They will just think the store sucks and is slow and doesn't work.

I had some trouble on the Canadian iTunes Store on Christmas day and on the 26th. I could navigate throughout the store okay, but sampling songs gave me long-lasting rebuffering dialog boxes. When buying songs, the transaction took longer and the song downloads often timed out. I assumed the store was really busy and resumed the downloads late in the evening. They all came through fine.

I'm very curious to here the Christmas numbers.

I had some issues last night with the itunes store. I purchased six albums and the downloads were fast, but searching for things timed out at least 10 times.

It was frustrating, but as I was having issues the iTunes slowdown story came across the news and eased my mind... at least to the point of knowing it wasn't my airport that was giving me trouble.

Hopefully they'll give it a chance... I mean, they've experienced what other stores are like during Christmas! :D

Hopefully, though, this will lead to some capital investment for resource upgrades.

I also hope the good publicity stemming from this (all the analysts seem to be spinning this very positively) leads to more studio interest in movie availability and so on. I am ready to try out buying a movie, but there's nothing I really want.

It also seems like Apple dropped Just For You to compensate the load a bit.

I can't log on to iTMS right now.

First time in months I've tried to check it out and I can't...too bad.

I was one of those who noticed the wonkiness.. Was trying to show my mom how "easy" it is. (Sure mom, just keep clicking this over and over until it works.)

I thought Akamai was responsible for providing Apple's distribution?

I have been having the same problem. I have an AOL account and iTunes Store keeps telling me that I've got the password wrong. I set up another account now which works just fine, but my old account has 15 credit in it. Was it the UK store you had problems with and managed to get back in? Has anyone else experienced this problem?
