Hi all - I have a 24" iMac and am going to get into some simple home recording using logic express and a basic Miglia Audio input.
can anyone give me some thoughts about which speakers to pair up with my machine. Money is not a major issue - but I would rather get as good as I can afford with a ceiling at around £300......
Conversely if you have any speakers that are way cheaper and you think are amazing let me know.....Cheers !

I am extremely happy with my HK Soundstick II speakers. Unobtrusive, very powerful, and a good, rounded output. I have the bass turned most of the way down as it's much more powerful than I want or need.

I would recommend the JBL Creature II speakers. They have great sound quality and go with the iMac perfectly.

The Creatures, having only 2 high range speakers to the Soundsticks' 8, has little to no middle range and not much top end either. The Soundsticks are far more rounded.

I 100% agree with you, I have the Soundsticks II and I LOVE them. They were a little pricey (I think I got mine for like 125 shipped which is pretty good) but they are such high quality. I would highly recommend them, they are the best speakers I've ever had for a computer :) (and I had a creative 5.1 set for a while)

Are the HK Soundsticks better than the Bose Companion 3?

Bose is overpriced crap, IMO. The JBL Creatures are waaaaay over-hyped and the SoundSticks are tinny. All three products appeal to folks who are big fans of form over function.
If you're recording, get a pair of solid desktop monitors. M-Audio makes some good stuff, from what I hear.

Get the Altec lansing fx6021's or, with a little more cash, the Swans m200.
You won't regret it.

I have these (BX5a) and I LOVE them, excellent sound from a reasonable sized speaker. Great low end response from a 5" driver.
I previously had the smaller DX4 and was pleased with the quality of the sound, but they lacked low end response.
If you can afford it (and have the desk space) get the BX8a, they are big (8" drivers) but will give you a full range, and HUGE sound.
M-Audio is the best bang for your buck, and you WILL NOT BE LET DOWN.
