IDF World Expo has announced (http://maccentral.macworld.com/news/2003/05/08/creativepro/) that Apple will be providing a Feature Presentation during the Macworld CreativePro Expo from 9:30AM to 10:30AM on July 16th, 2003.
Neither the speaker nor the content of the talk has been disclosed.
Macworld CreativePro Conference and Expo replaces Macworld Expo NY this year and takes place between July 14 and 18th, 2003 at New York City's Javits Center.

Well well...
This could either be the announcement of the 970 or a nice presentation of the 970 announced at some previous event (WWDC...). :D
Just my speculation. :)

Duh. Finally, iWalk will make its debut...
But seriously folks, why must Apple put these poor expo guys through the ringer? Macworlds are a grrrrreat! way of garnering publicity and giving us something to look forward to.
C'mon Steve... grace the stage with your moxy and showmanship... Apple is one of the greatest shows on earth....

It's going to be a Bill Gates impersonator. They're going to reenact my favorite scene from South Park: Bigger Longer and Uncut.
Years later, nothing's changed (http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/business/aptech_story.asp?category=1700&slug=Microsoft%20Hackers)...
And Ballmer has the ballmers to talk smack about Linux compared to Windows server.....

This is good - nice to see that even though they won't be having a Keynote there, they're atleast being a part of it. Especially after all that crap with MWNY vs. MWBoston....
And if it is the 970 - I might have to go.....
Anyone planning on being there?

I mean think about it, if Apple shows the 970 and says
'coming in 3 months' or something like that they could pretty much guarentee that sales would fall off the charts until the 970 was actually available for ordering. Who's gonna buy a G4 if they know when the 970 is coming? Nobody.

Perhaps this would be a good time to pay NY a visit.
A friend of mine has promised me a broad way show for a long time.....

What exactly is "Feature Presentation" suppose to mean? A film? Some speaker showing new stuff? What?
Maybe it will be Mr. Jobs giving one last speech at a MacWorld (or what ever they want to call it now). Imagine a 970 introduction as the finale to all keynotes.

I guess its Phil. Steve handles the OS and hardware while Phil handles Software (Appls own, like FCP4,DSP3 and Shake3) +and others... PS and stuff + marketing of OS X features.
it's prpbobly a mix of the old, but new, Power Of X session with presentation of new Documents (iWorks or what ever) and so on. Some thirdparty software like PS and Maya probobly will be shown.
I don't mind Phil though. I think he is great as a keynote speaker. Actually most of the Apple people i'v listen to (e.g. WWDC) are excelent speakers.

I don't understand. Who said anything about 'coming in 3 months'? It could be a 'preview' in the sense of 'available to order now, shipping in 3-4 weeks'.
I presume that your objecting to the idea of 'preview' not '970'. Or am I misunderstanding? Are you also trying to say that we won't see the 970 at this MW, let alone before (WWDC)?
If that's what you think, then I'd like to know why? Personally, I'm very optomistic about seeing the 970 released this summer.

who's ordering a g4 now anyway (let alone in 3 months)? especially when an intel machine running whatever u need (linux, xp, redhat, etc.) can do it faster and cheaper?
bring on the 970 and bring it on now!!
I'm hoping they'll introduce the 970 in the upcoming 15.4" AlBook. I can't think of any other reason that this Powerbook has been delayed so long. They'll probably upgrade the 17" at about the same time. It is supposedly "the year of the laptop" so I hope this will happen. I do a lot of audio work and the software I'm using ( DP4, Reason, Ableton Live, NI softsynths) can easily max out my G4 500MP and buying a dual 1.42 machine just isn't enough of a performance boost to justify upgrading. I know I must be losing patience when PC notebooks are starting to look like a better audio solution to me. I hope Apple does something quick before I turn to the dark side ;)

Unless these things are in the Apple store on July 15th for sale Apple is stupid to announce anything at all.
Everyone seems to think they have some BIG THING UP THEIR SLEEVE.
Its lame. They will probably announce a new version if Safari, iBlaBLa and some word processor that, while better then word, is not quite compatible.
Shoot, at this point I will take a fully compatible MS Exchange client over a 970 powermac. What is all that speed worth if I still have to run a windows box for corp email.
Then I guess it's time to consider going PC. :(

I'm not going to be buying any more G4s even if the 970 is delayed that long. Either way, they lose me as a customer if the 970 isn't here really soon.

You...you're right! This is all a sham! Apple has been leaking rumors of a 64-bit OS and created an elaborate hoax with IBM to make it look like they're going to go with a new architecture when really...really we'll just be waiting for the G5......even if it......never comes.......
:( oh....oh, god, I don't think I can hold on any longer......I feel so sick....ohhhh god....I.....I guess me and my iMac will just....die together I guess...if only......hey! maybe, maybe the new version of iMovie will be really good! :)

Hi Folks,
Nice community here, some good folks. But here the question: I am a to be switcher, and im looking into what kind of apple i want. I often see people refer to 'events' at which i am lost to their propose/frequently and stuff like that.
In this thred people have referred to Macworld and WWDC, what are these things, why and when are they?
(hope this is kind of a clear question)

Boy, that's a toughie Cuckoo. It all depends on your wants, needs, and budget. As you may have noticed, in the Mac world, your budget makes a huge difference.
My reccomendation: WAIT. The next gen of mac processors and OS is coming and you don't want to be a recent switcher who has last year's (Q1-2, 3?) hardware, because there is going to be a huge difference, if you havn't picked that up already.
WWDC stands for World Wide Developers Conference. With a free membership to the Apple Developers thingamagig you can buy a ticket for $1200 or so. Then there's the Macworld Expos. These are basically just big opportunities for Apple to announce their Big New Things. The thing is, this year those Big New Things are getting hot.
Or maybe there'll just be enhancements to iLife, who can tell?
Someone may add to this, but just sit tight. The worse that will happen is you will be forced to buy something bottom of the line for $1500 or more less than what you'd be paying for the same thing now. When the bombs drop you'll know it...

Why are so many people being so pessimistic?
Think about good things in life:
-Apple will release new 970 Pmacs (w/ 900Mhz FSB, 200GB ATA/133, 1GB RAM, SuperDeDooper Drive, OS 10.3, New Pro Mouse & Keyboard, Quad 2.5Ghz Processors, etc...)
-Apple will also release the new tablet-like devices
-Apple will also release new PPC 970 iMacs & PowerBooks (up to 2.0 Ghz
-Apple will also release a major update to AppleWorks, which is fully compatible (not through MacLink) with MS Office
-Apple will release a video service (similar to music service)
-Apple will release an iMovie update that makes it much faster
-Apple will release a Safari update that upgrades your internet connection to T3 (or maybe DS3)
-Apple will release audio editing software that blows away Pro Tools
-Apple will release some cool sunglasses that replace the ones I just broke...

Hello,
I hope that Apple includes Serial ATA.
The speeds and throughput would help alot for video and audio manipulation.
Well this is of course proof of the quad 970, new tablet, and 10.3 shipping that day free for anyone with a license for 7.1 and up! Woot!

From what I've read about Serial ATA the performance gains won't be apparent until hard drives get faster. I guess in a RAID setup you would see some advantage but I doubt it would be much over a regular ATA RAID config.

Nice list. Maybe Steve will see this (we know he reads rumor sites!) and decide why not and unleash everything in the R & D labs on the unsuspecting public. Since we all know they have all the 970's ready to go in a warehouse underground in Cupertino.

Really? I have yet to see a PC with these MTOP numbers:
http://forgetcomputers.com/~jdroz/09.html
Not to mention Apple's machines are known to give you better productivity because of their ease of use and troubleshooting compared to PCs. Speed of processor isn't everything. There are many other factors. It is not to say the 970 isn't holding people
from buying G4s. But if you need a computer that performs, the current run of G4s are more than adequate.

I forgot to add:
-New Super Xserve (with 5 terabytes of internal hard drive space)
-New Enterprise Xserve (with unlimited multiple processors and "Ultra FireWire Enterprise Edition" w/ 50 GBps throughput)
-New iBook (with Apple's new iLife x2 edition) with 10" screen, weighing in at 1 pound
-New Wearable display (think sunglasses) with a microphone on each side (remember the patent) for speech recognition and surround sound headphones
-ApplePC PC compatibility card: put an AMD Opteron processor in your computer w/ up to 512 MB RAM & no fan!
-New Apple Pens (I lost my old one and can't find any new ones)

Yea, Keynote is super compatible. Oh wait, it ISNT compatible if you remotely use it any sort of power user context. Doh, bummer! We all went back to PowerPoint already in my office. I can only imagine that 'Document' or whatever the rumors say it will be called will be the same way.
Besides, why rebuild apps that already exist and work 'well enough'? I really do not understand this logic. Fill the voids that are empty and then go back and rebuild stuff that already works fine later. I'd give back Safari and Keynote to get one viable MS Outlook Exchange compatible mail/calendering client. Then I could finally ditch my damn XP box.
I hope all this new cool stuff comes out but there are basic needs that have to be filled before the mac can explode out of its single digit market presence. I fully believe in Apple and love my macs but I am not blind to the strange decisions they seem to make. Who knows, they must have some super cool business plan up their sleeves! Doesn't seem like it from my view but I am not an exec at Apple.
970's? Tablets? Not likely.

Geeze, why are you people like this? Someone says something that you dislike and you immediately insult them professionally and personally. Its kind of ridiculous.
Yea, everyone hates PPT, you hated getting them. Bummer, its a common tool of communication, life goes on.
Look, if PowerPoint is a waste as you seem to think it is then you even MORE validate my point. Why does Apple waste time on building Keynote when its (A) 'Waste of freakin space' and (B) A perfectly good waste of freakin space already exists.
Just because I criticize Apple doesn't mean I don't care. Let me get my credentials, yea, Mac users since 1988, apple user since the early IIe days. Keep your 'M$' comments in the closet.

Its NOT re-inventing the wheel as you like to describe it, but to make it EASIER and BETTER for us MAC users who's sick n' tired of having no choice BUT to use MS's BUGGIEWARE, and facilitate those poor buggers like yourself another option - and if you don't like it, then DON'T use it, but just don't mock it because "Power Users" like yourself are so far up M$'s ass that knows nothing BETTER and ultimately don't deserve anything BETTER!

Dude chill out, I dig my G4 powerbook. I use it religiously however I work in a corporate environment. Not ever Mac user lives the Myth of The True Switcher, the one true job where nobody else matters and there are no established standards.
I do whine to MS, incessantly! They don't care anymore then Apple does. Fact is, Corporate IT lives and dies on Exchange. Exchange is a crappy product, we all know this. Anyone NOT compatible with this product is in for a ****ty time in most corp environments. MS wants this, its Apple's job to fix it and get more users.
MS has no incentive to be kind to Mac users. Apple has EVERY incentive to make the Mac platform as compelling as possible. I know at LEAST 15 people who have wanted to move to a powerbook and ditch their XP laptops but the minute they found out 'No exchange calendaring' they stopped dead in their tracks.
Not every person who wants to use a Mac wants to use Photoshop. Sales folks, biz dev folks, execs, yes, even engineers like me, we love the Mac and what it stands for but in many cases we are dependant and must interact with 'Crappy Buggy Software'.
All I am saying is 'Hey Apple, make me iOutlook so I can friggin keep my meeting schedules straight.'
Geeze, you guys are nuts about this stuff! I dig some of the iApps, I just think if Apple is serious about the Enterprise they need to get serious about corp communications tools.
I'd end this with a pithy insult, but I imagine it'd be lost on you.

Hahaha, ok sure..
I'll let the clients that I interact with 'Hey, look, I know that the PPT I sent you last week by your request did not open for you and or opened and looked like total crap but thats your fault for using Buggy Crappy Software.'
Yea buddy, you betcha. People don't care WHAT it is or IF its buggy, they just want it to work, reliably and cross-platform. You export PPT out of keynote and it barely works half the time.
iApps are fine, Keynote is NOT an iApp, its designed as a PPT killer and it is, except when it comes to interacting with the majority of PPT users on the planet.
I am sure you'll just curse at me again, ignorance is bliss like that.

I repeat: Key Note is there as an ALTERNATIVE for us MAC users to do presentations just like PowerPoint was designed to do. They could of very well not build the import/export function and just let it be a stand alone software, but then that'd be M$ like and don't give you the option, if it does import/export crappy PowerPoint presentations perfectly as you wish, then A] KeyNote IS a buggieware B] it's re-inventing the wheel as you described earlier.
Of course we all know it doesn't do a PERFECT import/export job, and its not a programme designed so that - if so, why not just make a PowerPoint plugin which adds all the better functionalities like transparency for example? because PowerPoint is flawed, yet sadly enough most of the "Power Users" that you INTERACT with are mostly managerical type who has to justify their existence
by doing PowerPoint presentations which most of people fall a sleep to.
To "Think Different" and to achieve the similar goal with a BETTER experience and MORE functionality without all the bug is what Apple stands / renowned for... so maybe its time for the "Power Users" to switch and see the light - and maybe pull other people out of the darkness - us MAC users are LEADERS, not sheep-like FOLLOWERS [i.e. wake your fellow PPT users on this planet UP - there's a better solution!]

I really hope so. But, if they aren't announced or released at WWDC, I hope that they are at MW.

I'm sorry, but I have to chime in here. First, hokka, you are really completely neglecting reality. We live in a world of interoperability. Many of us have to produce files that others can read/view/whatever. If Keynote doesn't do that well enough, you cannot say that siberian should tell everyone else that they're wrong for not being able to read his files. That's just stupid. It would get him fired, more than likely.
Second, if you ask me, Keynote has potential, but it's not there yet. I attend many, many presentations throughout the year. Probably about 50% of them are done in PowerPoint. Almost all of the rest are done with transparencies. To date, I have seen one presentation done with Keynote, and it didn't come off too well. Why not? Because Keynote didn't properly identify the projector's screen configuration and displayed the slides with the left edge of the slides (including some of the text) cut off by the left edge of the screen. Is that 'just working'? Is that an example of software that isn't buggy?
I've also used Keynote a little bit myself, and have been equally disappointed. I spent a number of hours putting together a presentation in Keynote, only to have it tell me when I tried to save that there was some unknown error and it couldn't save. Curiously, I was able to export and finish the presentation in PowerPoint.
Now, I'm not saying that PowerPoint is better. I'm just saying that Keynote is in its infancy. I look forward to later versions that will make it a PowerPoint killer.

:( Gee guy, I didn't know I insulted you professionally.
Is your job title "Professional PowerPoint Power User"?
I apologize for any dishonor I brought to you and your family. My hatred of recieving PPTs when an email would have sufficed or been superior shames me. I humbly wish your forgiveness for not immediately recognizing the vast importance of Microsoft's honorable application.
Now, if you're done flaming me, I would like to point out that I, too, believe Apple must achieve a superlative level of interoperability with their files to achieve world domination.
Everyone have fun, don't let it get too toasty in here...

Besides, why rebuild apps that already exist and work 'well enough'? I really do not understand this logic. Fill the voids that are empty and then go back and rebuild stuff that already works fine later. I have to say I'd really like a good web page creation program. Graphics editing etc. Though they've certainly been done before.
In fact, I wouldn't mind some iMovie/iPhoto slide show and quicktime integration - but just a nice simple way to put up clean web pages would be a great iApp. Neat tricks can wait.
I guess someone will tell me there's already a great program to do just this.... (?) I haven't looked on the mac yet as I have previously made pages on the PC.

I like GoLive, though I haven't tried the latest version (I have an older version that still works just fine). Also, iPhoto can export web pages based on photo albums that you have. I've used it to good effect to produce the photo pages on my web site. (It really saves a tremendous amounts of time when you're trying to create pages with more then 200 photos on them.)

I haven't tried to mess with it, but I saw something that appears to be a web page tool in AppleWorks...ala that piece of utter dog crap, MS Frontpage...
Ugh, FP is a dog. My fianceé tries to use it for her pages, but it sucks. She basically says you have to lay everything out the way you want it the first time -- cause there's no editing it effectively once its there....
BTW, I seriously think if it were possible Apple should buy Adobe. How many people think this besides me? And how many problems would this solve? They've got the money, I would think. And I can't see Adobe seeing it as such a bad thing. Oh well, dreamin' again.

Maybe, but I wouldn't hold your breath. Adobe, from what I've seen, is a bit too into themselves to allow it. (Gee, if it were to happen, do you think that Apple would then make the Windows versions of Photoshop, et. al., cost twice as much as the Mac versions? Or maybe discontinue the Windows versions entirely, leaving the Mac version and a new Linux version - that would cost twice as much... Qui sait?)

That would be totally monopolistic. I would be ashamed of apple. The better way of doing it would be to continue with the type of products Adobe had been making (before apple purchased them) for windows... providing regular updates, but really integrate it into the Mac OS... the same way that Apple has done with other software they've bought.

Exactly...well, I don't think there'd be anything wrong with keeping the current pricing scheme, except with bundling offers with hardware.
The real sweet thing would be to totally ensure a very high level of optimization. Just think if when the 970s came out there was already a fully optimized version of PhotoShop and Illustrator to go with? Beat those damned benchmarks!!
Plus it would be nice to have access to PS, Illustrator, Pagemaker, and Indesign code for integration into things like AppleWorks, "Lite" versions of the professional programs, but what limited components they included would have all the sweetness of their professional counterparts.
Apple and Adobe. SERIOUS synergy. More than any other acquisition Apple could make, as far as I can tell. I only wish it would just happen. It just makes me tingle to think of it...but why even dream.... :(
After that they can merge with Sun, like that one guy was saying...oooooh...*shivers*

Ah, you didn't get the reference. So either you don't know about this, or you're already ashamed of Apple.
When Apple bought Shake, they discontinued the Windows version almost immediately. Further, they changed the pricing structure, such that the Mac version cost half what the Linux and Irix versions cost. So what I was suggesting was not without precedent.
(Yes, the pricing was done by cutting the cost of the Mac version in half, not doubling the Linux and Irix prices, but the relative result is still the same.)

No, they didn't type in anything wrong, they just assumed (ass-u-me) to much from what someone else posted that "they" thought would be a good idea. There is no merger or even potential merger with Adobe, pending. However, I am confident that Apple still has a an overall "good" working relationship with Adobe. Adobe will do what is "good for" Adobe. They will utilize and program for what Apple hardware is available, for as long as it remains profitable. If Apple produces better hardware, Adobe will not hesitate to jump on board to take advantage of it. It is to their advantage to do so.
Corporate relationships are often tested. I see this on a daily basis in my job where the company I work for is a vendor providing services for another company. Stuff happens, but most of the time they discuss it, and then work through it, to the mutual benefit of all involved. If Apple builds it, they (Adobe and many others) will come.
