This is just hilarious!

Said photo depicts a Zune box set out and used as an iPod display table. Ouch. It takes "crushing the competition" beyond the figurative. Good stuff.

The Windows fanboys would probably say that's because they sold out of Zunes and had all these iPods lying around.

Around Seattle, that would be possible.

They were advertising the Zune in Innovations at Disneyland. It was kinda pathetic actually. Don't even think they mentioned it could play music, just said you could view pics and movies. I miss the People Mover that used to be there.

I haven't actually seen anyone here using one out on the streets. iPods everywhere. Seattle was like that too when I lived there.

My boss got one for Christmas. I've picked on him about it ever since. Also, I've never been to Disneyland :(

With the huge tie-up between Disney & Apple, I'm surprised at this. I was actually sick in that place this summer.

It doesn't seem to be an isolated incident. Here's one I took today in Salt Lake City:

You mean Microsoft didn't give all their employees a Zune for Xmas? They had to buy them?!? IIRC Apple gave theirs a shuffle. :p

B

What company doesn't give their employees the shuffle every now and again? :D

If Microsoft gave them a zune, it was probably more like "See you Zune!" on a "holiday" card.

Are all stores like that in the states?

I should start taking pictures of our electronic stores and how things are advertised.

Usually less in your face... :D

Yep.

And they will communicate with each other or share their headphones! :)

Far from it. Costco is a "warehouse" store and competes squarely with the likes of Sam's Club (a division of Wal Mart). Costco's business model is to have large quantities of stuff for good prices (e.g. 24 rolls of paper towels for $6) and to throw in the occasional higher end items like telescopes, pianos, HDTVs, iPods... All in a warehouse DIY environment kind of like the pick up area of Ikea.

Places like Best Buy and Circuit city are the more traditional electronics stores.

In another Zune-demeaning occurence at Costco, they apparently have more of a mind to protect the iPods from theft than to protect the Zunes. You know those cardboard things they use for the iPods that you have to take to the register to get the real thing? Not for the Zunes. They keep the actual Zunes in the boxes and put them out on the warehouse floor. Makes you think of their reasoning behind that, doesn't it?

"Hmm, ok, since iPods are wildly popular, we have to put those cardboard replacements out to prevent people from stealing them."

"What about the Zunes, boss?"

"HA! Do you really think anyone's going to want to steal THOSE?? Just put them out there. Nobody's gonna steal 'em." ;)
