Good review, except that the author labels people who use the Sport Kit with non-Nike shoes as "a few penny pinchers." I wrote a rebuttal (http://podophile.com/2007/01/03/nike-ipod-review-in-businessweek/) on my blog.

Penny pinchers if we don't use Nike shoes? Give me a break.

I've had Reebok, Adidas, Nike, and New Balance (current) running shoes. I buy the shoe based on how it feels, not because of the brand name.

Another vote here for the lame penny pincher comment. It would have been more helpful to link to marware or switcheasy for their products (especially when he mentioned his own duct tape job).

Also, he mentions that the nike shoes range in price, but fails to mention that the ipod nanos do as well (only mentioning the 4GB price of $199).

The complete system (brand new) could be as cheap as:

existing shoes: free (kind of)
strap for existing shoes: $7
2GB iPod Nano : $149
Armband: $29
Sensor Kit: $29

Total: $214

However, given that the nano is apple's most popular ipod model, I imagine for many, the setup will really only be the kit, maybe a new armband (b/c they likely already have one that could work), and the $7 strap. A great deal for what it is.

Of course, when BW rated this it must have been before the current issues with the Nike+ site in which you can't even access the site for data or challenges.

nike is smart for teaming up with the iPod, or is it the other way around...
