Mupen 64

Has anyone tried using this software? http://macupdate.com/info.php/id/9499 its a nintendo 64 emulator for mac... im not entirely sure how it works tho, theres another emulator called sixtyforce which seems interesting, but where do you get the games from? do you download/bit torrent them? any insight would be great because these do seem fun!:)

I don't really know about Mupen 64 but I believe SixtyForce is the best Mac emulator, you should try that, plays many good commercial games at full speed and is universal binary.

To download roms just search around Google, torrents can probably net you big packs but if you want specific games to play just search around for n64 roms on google.

would I need to find mac specific roms? or are pc roms and mac roms the same? what is the extension for a rom? and what is the best site you can recomend for a rom?

Links would be a problem.

But, ROM files are independent of OS. Extensions vary and almost don't matter on a Mac to answer the OP's question.

They aren't that hard to find.

Mupen64 works, but as with all N64 emulators requires a lot of processing power. Sixtyforce currently is more compatible with most commercial roms, but you can check both out.

Rom's are like mp3's - they can be played by software on macs, windows, linux whatever.

As for acquiring the roms, there are many ways to do it. Of course we have to mention that its a legal "gray area". If you own an N64 and some games, its generally accepted that you can legally download these roms and play them.

Searching on the internet will reveal tons of sites with Rom info, and some of them are legit and some arn't. A lot of them will bombard you with popups, porno and all manner of crap. Bittorrent will have roms, but most files will be rom collections several hundred megabytes worth. Limewire and the likes work well if you just want to download a rom or two - particularly if theyre common, like Super Mario 64 or Goldeneye.

I have been goofing around with n64 emulation since the system was still commonplace, and progress has been made. Emulation of MOST games is quite easy on windows, but on Mac only a few common games work acceptably (and generally with much higher requirements than on Windows).

That being said, you can still have a good time replaying mario 64 especially if you have a decent g5 or intel machine.

The transfer of backed up roms is illegal, so we can't tell you where to get them on this forum.

I back up my own GBA roms with a Flash2Advance cable though.
