I want to play avi's and mpg's on my tv through my 360, but connect360 doesn't seem to want to do that. It says they support only wmv. Is there a way to get the other movie types onto my 360's HD so I can view them on my new HDTV? I have been using an s video cable for a while, but I feel like the 360 might be able to produce some better quality.
Thanks!

I think its only a matter of time before a dash update to support those extra codecs is available.

yes i hope your right - at the moment it's just a pain having to export some of my movies to WMV to play on my 360 , if only the 360 could play Mpeg's and Avi's that would save me a whole load of time

OK so I'm guessing it's impossible. Thanks for the info!

OK so if this happened, could the 360 be like a superior media center? Hook it up to a network, run it to your tv through component cables, sync with itunes, toss your videos on there. It sounds pretty nice to me. Is this already happening to a certain extent?

Well yes it's already there to a certain extent except your limited to what video files to play. If they added more codecs it would be the icing on an already nice cake.
Add internet TV & Radio and you've got a lovely cherry for the top too. :)

You can try TVersity, I haven't had any luck with it though. (It does real-time decoding to play avi, divx, mpg to the 360.)
I tried it last week and couldn't get my 360 to connect to (or even realize that it was there and available).

I never had the original Xbox. I swore never to buy a product like that from microsoft, but I bought the 360, and I couldn't possibly be happier (well, Guitar Hero 2 is exciting).
I guess I just want the most out of my new tv, and think that this has huge potential. Let me know if you get that real time codec thing working. I would be so keen on recording a show with eyetv and my miglia tv micro, tossing it on the 360, and watching it on my tv. It may not look fantastic, but it would be very cool.
Also, how is the music player on the 360. Oh, and can you connect to a 360 that is not on your network?
Thanks!

It will be the perfect day, the day they release AVI and MPEG support on the 360.

OK, I don't know a lot about networking, so see if you can help me out here. I go to a University, so every connection is on the same LAN (I know that for sure, because we LAN starcraft all across campus :D ). My roomate has a router set up to split his connection to his 2 comps and now my 360. My iMac is connected to the wall, directly to the school network.
Would these be considered on the same network? Does it depend on some other factor?
I know this isn't about the original post, but it's semi-related. Plus, I'm the OP, so...yeah.
Thanks!!

They should all be on the same network so you shouldn't have any problems. If he changed (for instance) a subnet or anything his computers and the 360 wouldn't connect at all, so I'm assuming (everything being equal & as it sounds), yes, everything is on the same network with the same settings.

What is the easiest (and cheapest) way to convert mpeg to WMV?

Microsoft has a Windows 9 Media Encoder (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=5691ba02-e496-465a-bba9-b2f1182cdf24&displaylang=en) free for download (for XP); I don't know if there are any encoders out there for Mac (free or not).

I'd most definitely need a Mac version. Thanks though.
I don't like being a "newbie"...
