I was just about to post this. Basically a 10-year-old controller design minus the rumble with tilt sensing. Surely you don't have to be a Nintendo fanboy to see that there's something wrong here.

While I do enjoy the added immersion it brings, I think was probably a ploy to get the media away from its lack of rumble........but regardless of that, they now need to take advantage of the SIXAXIS.
btw - Sony patented their tilt before Nintendo even announced their secret controller(teh Wii-mote)

But it's clear in actual applied use the differences between the Wiimote and the Sixaxis. I have no idea how Sony won an award for a such an old and tired design that has motion sensor tacked on.

Right - the only REAL difference(besides conceptual design), is application.
NOTE - one uses an external & built-in devices to track movement, while the other ONLY has sensing built in. And, while the Wii-mote completely changes the way you interact with a game, the SIXAXIS merely adds immersion to an already tried/true interaction(the basic controller).
Which is a little absurd, but like I said, this is probably more of a ploy to help nudge unhappy rumble-fans into trying out tilt.

For some reason the rumble feature of all of my five DualShock 2 controllers has died and while its nice, I think accelerometeres add much more to the experience than a rumble feature.

I agree, I prefer tilt offer rumble, and while both would be nice.....rumble is not THAT imperative.

"The overwhelming consumer demand and critical acclaim for PS3 is a testament of the platform's strength and the industry's desire for a true next-generation entertainment system," said Jack Tretton president of SCEA. "The full potential of this powerful machine has yet to be realized -- what you've seen so far is just a taste of what will be on the table for 2007 and years to come."
Bwhaha. I think this guy needs to be reminded of the lack of interest with the PS3. Shelf stock anyone? I feel embarassed for him. He's talking about how much the system has demand and critical acclaim, where in reality they produced less systems than Nintendo and they still have machines in shops! Incredible.
Critical Acclaim? I guess they must not be playing the games. The best game is what? R:FoM which has acclaim for being a run of the mill, forgetable game.
In actual fact the first thing Jack said was a bare faced lie which is evidented by his 2nd quote "It will get better", "potential" etc. What a ****ing moron.
a controller that hasn't changed much since the mid 90's. they lost rumble and stuck in gyroscopes. Sure the 360 controllers haven't got gyros but it's leaps and bounds above the PS3 controller. We entered the 3D gaming world now Sony. Swop the left analogue stick with the d-pad please. It would help if the controller wasn't a bastardisation of the SNES controller to begin with.

Did Sony patent tilt before these guys; (It's a SNES controller with tilt.)

Anywho, I merely stated they had tilt in mind before the Wii-mote was announced.....

Why did my question without a question mark bother you? ;)
I'm just curious. The tech has been around for a long time, since at least the first pinball games. As you mentioned the 2600 had tilt, all GB/GBA pinball games that I know of, had tilt support.
Even Nintendo's PowerGLove had tilt.
So stating that Sony had a patent on it prior to Nintendo made me curious to when they filed this patent?

roger that, I understand.......I just wanted to prevent any "Sony copied Ninty" remarks/flamewars to ensue in such a thread.
(which is why I replied with the 2600+tilt post)
Anywho, I still think this award is more of a novelty than anything.

Empty your cache in Safari. It should now be working :)
I'll reserve my judgment of SixAxis until I have my PS3. For me i'm guessing it will be just like the wii remote in that for some games it will work fantastically and for others its a complete miss. But I am looking forward to Lair & Warhawk :)

I see. If I didn't know someone in porn, nor work for a marketing company in the past, I would say that these awards are all deserving, but it all comes down to advertising dollars spent, which determines the winner. :)

That's what I was wondering at first.
Now I'm left wondering why the **** it went to the SIXAXIS. People need to remember that it's not motion sensing, but tilt sensing (rotation around three axes, but not movement along them).

That's not true at all. In COD3 for PS3 you have to hold the controller and move it up and down (not tilt it) to make your guy do something. I forget what it is though, but it worked.

yeah... that exactly what was i thinking...
the Wii is where the REAL motion sensing is at.
I bet Sony bribed them to give them a emmy for publicity on the failing system :p

Also in Resistance if something latches on to your body you have to shake the controller up and down to get it off.

It says up and down :D but i assume wild flailing will work too :)
The SIXAXIS controller has the same accelerometers and gyroscopes that the Wii-Mote has, the only difference is that the Sony version lacks the ability to point like the Wii-Mote can, but thats a funtion of IR and not motion control.

I'll just toss it out there that I hate the name of the controller, and the fact that it's always in capital letters.
I don't care if it's a palindrome.

Turns out SIXAXIS didn't win an Emmy at all, the guys at Sony PR got it all wrong. Engadget clarfies things nicely: Sixaxis not getting an Emmy (http://www.engadget.com/2007/01/09/oops-sony-declares-sixaxis-emmy-emmys-say-uh-uh/)

Regardless of winning or not I think it's nice. For me personally I don't want to have to do the wii mote all the time and view it as more of a novelty for a few games. I love my graphi pad, but don't use it for everything you know.
All the FPS games and most of the racing games I've played on Wii have been lacking in controls. The Wiimote actually gets in the way of gameplay...not enhance it for me. Try playing a real FPS in Legendary/Nightmare mode and see if the inconsistencies in the tech don't drive you nuts. It's fun for games where critical movement isn't a must, but I doubt you'll see folks winning too many gaming contests with the mote.
So, in the end some movement in a controller that gives one waaayyy more consistent movement to me is a better thing than the other way around. I'll take it in the 360 remote please :) as the Xbox controllers have always fit my hands well...unlike those tiny Dreamcast remotes
