View Full Version : Mr. Anderson - formerly Dukestreet

Mr. Anderson
May 12, 2003, 11:06 AM
Its already come up in a couple threads and to prevent it from popping up in a bunch more here's the explanation.

I've been wanting to move away from dukestreet for a while. my webstite dukestreet.com is going to take a smaller focus than my newer projects, although I'll always have that domain.

And that left me with what to choose to be as my new member name. Well, in real life I am 'Mr. Anderson' and I'm rather a fan of the Matrix. I like the dual meaning, and it works well and has enough name recognition that pretty everyone here gets the reference.

Friends and coworkers also call me Mr. Anderson - just like Agent Smith in the first Matrix on occassion - so I'm used to it. I hope everyone approves. :D

Thanks Duke....erm...I mean, Mr. Anderson ;) I feel much better now knowing what brought about the change :)

Nice to see the old 'tar back too, maybe we'll be seeing the "Show me the G5" one again?

Well, as for the 'show me the G5' tar, i don't think so. We don't even know if the new machines are going to be called the G5. I might make a new tar that would be a 'special edition', only around for a couple days on the announcement of the new processor....we'll see.

Any future 'tars will probably have some sort of Matrix reference. I'll stick with Fiji/Lightwave for now, though. Its my favorite.

its a little much actually, but it was interesting for a while and dates back well over a year ago....

Thank you for the explanation. For me personally calling someone Mr. is very formal. When working at a hospital many of the doctors would ask us call them by their first name. It always seemed to be a friendly gesture! I don't mean any disrespect though, so If you prefer Mr. Anderson! ;)

OOOOOO. Your friends and coworkers tack a "Mr." on your name??? I'm impressed.:D Usually, if something is tacked onto my name, it's derogetory. As in, "Where's that idiot Roger at?!!?" :D Sigh. Not even little kids call me mister anymore. :( Ah, well, if they called me Mr Roger, it might confuse them. ;)

Actually, its not a term of respect in that sense, its said exactly like in the Matix by Agent Smith, more jokingly.

If you haven't seen the movie, which I imagine there will be a few of you, although not many, it won't be as obvious. If you haven't seen the movie I highly recommend it - the Matrix is one of those rare movies that changes the genre and has a much greater effect than anticipated. Special effects, references and 'treatments' used in the movie have cropped up continually since it first came out.

I can't wait to see what's done for the two new ones this year.

Well Duke, this is certainly most unexpected. Congrats on the shift, though. I hope everything works out for you with these new ventures. I have just one question, though. Used to be that we called you Duke, and Mr. Anderson is such a mouth full. What should we call you now, boss? Are you hoping for Neo? ;)

ah, well, good question, not sure on that...we'll have to see what happens. I'm sure most people will still call me Duke :D

There is a first name anyway and it starts with D......

i will always remember the old name, and i can picture you with your frisbee or running a five minute mile...and at your age!!...but i still cannot picture you with a different name

i remember when you came on board...you were one of the old ones like me

but since then, some real "old" ones have come here as major, daily posters...all to make the two of us not look so old...remember when macrumors was practically all teenagemacusers.com?

I'll probably forget from time to time and still refer to you as, Dukestreet (quite a memorable name). But over time, I suppose that will probably erode and we'll all be calling you "MIS-ter Anderson..." with that Agent Smith inflection. :D

Well, Mr. Anderson, I wanted one of the T-shirts that say "I took the red pill". Then I realized that it would be funnier to have "I took the blue pill". After all, we're all still here going to school and/or working. Of course, you could have taken the red pill when you were Dukestreet and now you've come back as Mr. Anderson. Hmmm.

Of course I respect you. Why wouldn't I, when you could quite easily ban me? ;) Did you go back to the older tar to make you new name more recognisable? I must say, it's probably my favourite of the lot that you've had.

I just hope this doesn't spawn a whole round of depols. It could get rather confusing round here.....

I'm using the Fiji 'tar since that's my favorite as well. And it works better to help in recognizing me - anyone around when I used it before should remember it.

As for what to call me, well, it really doesn't matter what you call me - as Dukestreet I was called a lot of other names that had nothing in common with duke or street ;) And I don't think that's going to change.

Love the new tar britboy :D

Well, for the record Neo (http://forums.macrumors.com/member.php?action=getinfo&userid=386) is taken. Unfortunate, too, since its a leftover name that seems to be from 2000 - and the person never posted a thing.

Trinity is still available - the only one close is Trinity570 (http://forums.macrumors.com/member.php?action=getinfo&userid=13892) - and they're active.

But no one wants Morpheus?

There should be a way to delete unused names.

Well, the only problem with that is that they might be a lurker - a member but not contributing to the forums, just reading. So unless arn had a way of tracking every user name and their activity, generate a monthly report and then automatically act on it - well - it would be too much work.

Besides, with over 16,000 members, there are still plenty of names available....;)

There should be some sort of disclaimer in the user agreement that if you register but don't contribute at least once in 6 months the user name will be deleted and opened up to be used by someone else. You would think there would be some easy way to track users since the forums list whos on.

Then what happens to users like myself, B2tM and krossfyter who have not posted in months, yet regularly come back to read the boards?

I wouldn't like it at all to see my user account deleted just because I haven't been on the boards in a few months.

Those are established users - in the case I mentioned the member hasn't posted a single time.

Its not a big deal and won't really ever be an issue. If it comes around that you really, really, really want a name that is taken and that user hasn't been active at all (zero posts) you could always appeal to arn. I'm sure something could be worked out. But as I've said, there really shouldn't ever be an issue - there are too many possibilities available even with 10 times the number of members we have now.

Like Anderson said. I am referring to accounts with no posts period. I'm recommending that the user needs to have at least one establishing post in there first six months of membership to retain there name and membership.

i think the best policy is that if a person wants a certain handle that's taken, they should be able to request a review of that handle. if, like neo, the person has never posted, an admin should email the user and ask if they will give up the handle. if they permit it, or fail to respond within, say, a week, it should be given to the user who has requested it. honestly, i think it would be nice to let people who actually do have the will to post here have the handles they want, if it's just taken by some nobody who never posts. if a user wants to just monitor the boards and never post, then his handle may as well be 4360423 or something.

and having a request-based system would cause minimal trouble to the mods. i can't imagine that more than a few a year would be made. even if it were once a month or something, it's still a minimal job with as many mods as we have.

Oh, WOW!!!!! I never noticed that before. I just changed it to the OS X version, and it's so much lighter! Not as much contrast, so I'm not sure if I'll keep it or not, but it's definitely impressive. So cool. Thanks for that one, Shadow! :)

By the way no one has seen it here unless they went to a special pre-release party. I think the earliest showings available would have been at 10PM tonight in the LA area. Even if someone has gone to one of those showings they wouldn't even be out of the theater yet.

Seriously, who's mouse? mouse is the little guy from the first movie who has a high voice and is like a programmer type. they call him a digital pimp 'cos he designs "the woman in red" and tries to get Neo to have a "more personal encounter" with her or whatever. in addition to his libido, he also makes random comments about things like tasty wheat and chicken.

Well, first off she's Monica Bellucci. Suffice it to say that she's absolutely stunning. She's bored with those around her, bitter towards her husband, and incredibly undersexed. That's a bit of a slapdash description, so maybe someone else who's seen the movie can help me out with it. Still, she's Monica Bellucci. What more do you need to know? ;)
