iPhone is great, but how about a "regular" widescreen iPod for those who don't want cellphone functionality?

I'll need to zoom off to the nearest Cingular store to see this thing in action soon. :)

I 100% AGREE!
I'd rather have an phone and an ipod - rather than having both in the same product.

Let's hope so. I'm slighty disappointed with it being a phone and a ipod. I just updated my contact phone for a year.

With the easily accesible SIM card it looks like this device is meant to be sold unlocked and used with almost any carrier. It probably just says Cingular cause thats the network hes connected to at the moment. Like he could have just as easily connected to T-Mobile.

I think thats definetly a revolutaniry bit, not playing the phone companies' games.

If it's over $700 I think they're going to really cut down on their sales. They need to price with their competitors in mind - although this is better than what's already out there (via blackberry/palm), those options have sufficed so far, and are pretty popular - people won't switch over to Apple if they're charging twice as much.

Yepp, but even $500 is a lot different than $700+. And also, the fact that you CAN get contract discounts on the other phones, and probably won't be able to with this (though maybe?), means that the other phones can be had for a LOT cheaper..

I only just started watching (internet at home was down, and I had to run to a coffee shop!), but I'm really impressed with the device so far (I feel like I'm looking at the world's first tricorder or something!). Battery life is of course the next big question (along with price), but I could see myself going for this even if I never used the phone part. And if this is only first generation, think about where the revisions might take it... ;)
