Oh well. Here's hoping there are contract discounts.. in which case I may get one in August, since that's when I get the discount again to update my phone (new every 2!).

price seems about right, but you won't be using it for too many videos with only 4-8GB of storage. If it has a good 'standby' power life, 5 hours ain't too bad for talk time. I hope they put these in stores soon to play with! :D

MUCH less of a good deal - it'll be interesting to see how these sell. To the none-mac lover, Blackberry works just great.. and those can be had for $199 with contract.. they're going to see the $599 price tag and skip right over, I imagine.

What a waste.
In the end, the other phone manufacturers will upgrade their phones and make them available to Sprint and the other carriers.

The iPod is locked into iTunes. You can't just use it with any computer. You have to play things Apple's way. It's almost always been a dictatorship. What's the difference with the phone?

It looks like all their innovation over the past 5 yrs has been in iPods and Phones. Right when innovation tapered off around the intro of the nano for the iPods, the Phone took precedence. They probably just switched to Intel so they wouldn't have to do as much development. Intel does all the heat testing and ****... they just takes the chips that fit.
I'm sorry but I am PISSED. I like Apple software, which means I have to use Apple computer. But instead of making them the best produts they can be, which would be easy considering all the features WIndows players have been pulling out (easily copied) they are sitting on their hands and playing with phones.
Someone needs to figure out a way to port Leopard as soon as it comes out. Cause this is just getting ridiculous.

This is a revolutionary product. This is only the first step, remember. Eventually, there will be ones with bigger storage and the ones with less storage will be cheap.
No, it's an evolutionary product, nothing really revolutionary about it. They only thing it can do that some other device can't already is the multi-touch screen. That's pretty slick, but it's something that's bee coming for years, we've all seen the demos of it, this is just the first consumer use of it. Other than that, they've taken a lot of tech and rolled into one, nice easy to use product. It's the evolution of the phone, not a revolution in communications.

That simply can't be the end. Certainly Leopard has to be mentioned at some point, no?! If not, that's a very bad sign with Vista coming out for consumers at the end of the month, the fact that we weren't even given an update on Leopard or about when it will be out...
Does this mean they put all their eggs in one basket and threw most of their R&D budget just into the phone and away from other things, like Leopard?? The phone is very cool and I think it will eventually do great, especially as technology improves (battery life, capacity, any kinks) but with or without the word "computer" in their name, people are expecting Leopard to compete with Vista, and we still don't have any more specifics than last time Steve talked.

Of course not, it just means that Apple is going to wait til later to talk more about the stuff in Leopard.
If Leopard is as revolutionary as Apple has hinted at, it would have been too distracting to have the iPhone unveiled as WELL as the super secret Leopard stuff.

This is a typical business tactic..DONT GO HEAD-TO-HEAD with a market leader. Gates just did a huge Keynote about how great Vista was, and it looked pretty damn good in there too. Apple would be "me too" if they talked about Leopard today.

I looked and this thing and said brilliant, multi touch, accelerametors, proximity sensors. There is innovation. New ways to use stuff in applications. ITS ALL WONDERFUL. Yet I want it in a tablet not a 3" screen. What good is this sweet trick of pinching to zoom in or out when its on a 3" screen. The price is fine, it's just too bad I have no need for a phone, and already have an iPod with far more storage capacity for music, photos, and movies.

YES! Thats the idea of capitalism. Companies are supposed to make products that consumers want. A lot of people want innovation in computers but they arent giving it. You know why, cause Apple knows that the OS X is so good no one can switch back to XP, so they rather let their computers lag, since no one is going to leave, a few just might not switch. No big deal when you can reel in a cash cow like a phone.
Great. Its better for Apple. But not for me, they are just going to put that money into accesories not computers, its no longer Apple Computers. Unfortuantely there are still alot of people who love OS X but think the hardware is way too limited, innovative, and expensive. Its like Gates said, which I think was actually a very wise statement, he couldnt concede that Vista was better than OS X but he said we've got flexibility that Apple doesn't. They have 19" touch screen. Laptops with wi-fi finders. Laptop that are less than 3 pounds. Ones with spill-proof keyboards. Tablets. UMPCs. The hardware on the Windows side kills Apple's Hardware. The only problem is the software. Its obvious this shift in strategy is going to be long term just look at their website.

And a lot of that Windows-based hardware is crap or poorly implemented (seriously, have you tried using the UMPC's from Samsung, Sony, etc?).
Part of the idea of capitalism is also to make products that as many people as possible want.
It would be awesome if Apple made some crazy tablet Mac, but I think the big reason they haven't yet is that the tech just isn't there, and a lot of tablets that are out there don't sell all that well.
But as much as you seem to hate Apple for focusing on this new phone, I would again venture to say that what they've accomplished with the new tech in this phone will find its way into new types of Mac that wouldn't even have been conceivable before.
I think Apple is doing plenty of cool stuff on the hardware side, and I expect more things unveiled over the year. Everything doesn't have to be released during Steve's keynote, especially not when it is dedicated to a completely new Apple product.

Samsung and Google Align to Create Rich Experience for Mobile Phone Users Worldwide
Cooperation ensures quick and easy access to GoogleTM search, Google MapsTM for mobile, and a fast, new GmailTM application for Samsung enthusiasts worldwide
Seoul, Korea and Las Vegas (Consumer Electronics Show) - January 8, 2007 - Samsung, a leading provider and innovator of mobile phones, and Google Inc. today announced a global cooperation to enable mobile phone users worldwide with quick and easy access to GoogleTM products and services - directly from their Samsung mobile phones.
Samsung mobile phones equipped with GoogleTM applications will enable consumers to search information, find locations, and manage their email on the move. Samsung's mobile phones offer today's latest technologies with unique applications and mobile designs. Now, the combination of GoogleTM applications and Samsung's advanced mobile devices represents two companies' dedication to offering a hassle-free mobile Internet experience for consumers world-wide.
Beginning in early 2007, selected Samsung phones will be provided with a range of GoogleTM products and services aimed to create a more dynamic user experience, including:
* GoogleTM search: Samsung handsets will include a GoogleTM icon in the application menu, providing users with one-click access to GoogleTM search
* Google MapsTM for mobile: Also featured on Samsung handsets will be Google MapsTM for mobile, an application that enables users to view maps and satellite imagery, find local businesses, and get driving directions when they're on the go
* GmailTM: GmailTM for mobile devices, a new application that brings more speed, convenience, and functionality to the mobile GmailTM experience, will also be available on Samsung handsets
Samsung has already launched, the Ultra Edition 13.8 (SGH-Z720), its first mobile handset installed with GoogleTM mobile search and GmailTM services. The slim 3G Z720 is only 13.8mm in thinness, is HSDPA ready, and comes with a 3-megapixel camera, MP3 Player, and Bluetooth connectivity. The HSDPA connectivity combined with embedded an Internet browser and GoogleTM mobile services will provide users with a rich mobile Internet experience. Future models will also be Google-ready as consumers continue to demand trouble-free mobile Internet access. Consumers will enjoy and appreciate Samsung's simple-to-use user interface and Google's familiarity for an effortless mobile Internet experience
"We are very thrilled to introduce Samsung mobiles with one-click access to Google services. Our cooperation with Google exemplifies our commitment to leading the evolution from the fixed-Internet era to a mobile Internet era and ushering in a ubiquitous world where mobile enables our consumers to access information about anything, anywhere, anytime," said Kitae Lee, President of Samsung's Telecommunication Network Business. "Samsung and Google will enhance users' mobile experience with a powerful, yet easy-to-use handset with simple access to information and personal management."
"Google is dedicated to providing users around the world with easier access information and services when they are mobile. Working with an industry leader like Samsung is a great way to accomplish that," said Deep Nishar, director of wireless products and strategy for Google Inc. "Improving the mobile user experience is of paramount importance to both Samsung and Google, and by working together we'll be able to bring the power, functionality, and convenience of GoogleTM search, Google MapsTM for mobile, and GmailTM for mobile devices to millions of Samsung users across the globe."

Just noticed that as well - what a crock of crap. Replace the tab for the ENTIRE line of computers with info on a not-even-available cell phone? Give me a break. At least with the switch to Intel, even if Apple royal farks up OSX and stops selling computers we can run Vista along with our old 10.4/5 apps. :(
EDIT: Even .Mac, a worthless product and Quicktime, which is now/should be more a part of iTunes than a stand alone product have their own tabs! They should have just bundled .Mac with all iPhones and lumped the .Mac info into the iPhone tab so that Hardware would still be up there.

A lot of it is crap I agree. But a lot of it is better than Mac. The fact is you have a choice. And a lot of the crap is cheap too. So some people care more about price than quality. Choice is a very nice thing. I mean if Apple's hardware is crap I have no choice but take it. Yet other places I can look all around for whatever I want.

What if Jobs introduced a new laptop that only blue eyed left handers could use? You'd wonder why Apple would do such a thing?
Apple has just introduced a great phone/iPod that only Cingular customers who reside in the U.S. can use -- and not until June.
Cingular has a thirty percent marketshare in the U.S. Why is Apple dissing sevently percent of cellphone users? Do they plan on doing the same with future iPod introductions, or laptops? Of course not.
EDIT: One last point. It scares me when someone says that all they need to do is capture "1 percent" of the market. If the iPhone ends up capturing numbers this low (just as Macs do) investors will be screaming. Did Apple just introduce the equivalent of the Mac for phones? If so, will Microsoft come in and introduce a phone that can be used with Sprint and Verizon? If so, Jobs will be crucified for doing to the iPhone what Apple did many years ago when they didn't license their OS.

Okay, so, it all started great, salivating at all the cool features of this new Apple gadget called iPhone for nearly an hour...
Then the bad news:
* $500-$600 WITH a contract.
* Cingular only (so phone will be locked and you get crappy service).
* Not available until June. WTF???
* Partnering with Yahoo for email. Why???
* Only 8GB on the most expensive unit??? Not enough for all the media.
Bah Humbug! Looks like the curse of Newton is back. All this buildup for an overpriced, crippled product that is still 5+ months away. Disappointing.

I hope you are right. My rant is slight premature since Apple could easily announce a Tablet in a month with this technology and I would be delighted. It just stymied me a bit how the Keynote was dedicated.
On another not its nice to see the New Airport Extreme being $180. That way in line with products form other manufacturers which makes me want to buy one. Since I was looking into a n, and have always wanted the Aiport since its easy to configure, yet the price was a huge turn off. Might be interested, wonder whats the price in Canada and for students.

Umm because for all intents and puposes MS was finished with code development in Vista back in November. There is a negative percent chance of MS releasing ANYTHING demoed by Apple at this point.
Right, I'm not talking about Apple worrying about MS lifting anything at this point, just that there isn't a whole lot of need for them to spill the beans on Leopard yet, since it won't be out til May or so. I would think that a special event would be more appropriate, same with new hardware (i.e. new Santa Rosa-based MBP's, etc.).

Adding a USB drive to your airport extreme will make Time Machine very easy to deploy. I like that idea a lot.
Does anyone know if the USB slot on the Apple TV does has the same functionality?
I guess we'll be on high media-event-alert for the next month or two awaiting Leopard/iLife/iWork news. I'm disappointed not to be ordering at least iLife and iWork tonight but I am excited to think they may be enhanced by Leopard.

Fair enough. And I would agree, now that Apple has perfected this technology, it would be silly to not extend it to a larger touchscreen portable Mac. I just wouldn't have expected Apple to not only unveil the iPhone today, but then also unveil a Mac tablet using the same technology.
Heck, I think it goes without saying that the next iPod will have the same kind of multitouch touchscreen interface, but I also wouldn't have expected them to unveil a new iPod as well, as any other new products would have been lost in the shuffle.

I think it's almost guaranteed that the next revision of the iPod will use this same technology (kind of like how the big iPod got the advanced scrollwheel introduced on the iPod mini) to offer a true widescreen hard drive-based video iPod and run this same new embedded OS X.

LOL they still have the Airport Extreme up. $300 CAD with edu. LOL. Thanks for becoming more realistic Apple.

Oh shut up, please do us all a favour.
I've been reading this forums and you've done nothing but whine since the phone was announced. Really we don't care about your opinion the 6th time its voiced.
OK lets be fair here. For most people the iPhone is a non-event since many will not switch carriers simply for a phone. However iLife and Leopard are a more viable, real world, and cheaper option. So for those who were looking to see what Apple has up their sleve in regards to iLife and Leopard this WAS a disappointment. When was the last time that Steve didn't demo an OS at MW?
And I think you are the one who should shut up because there is NO reason why anyone can't express disappointment. Only zealots get worked up to the point that they have to shout down people who a bit saddened by what Apple did or did not show.

Apple tv has no market here until they actually make some video content available on iTunes, really. I do like the concept, personally however, I have no use for it right now. I think the market here will take a year or so to latch on, if not longer. Remember, broadcasters here have boycotted iTunes and set up their own services. (Channel 4, ITV and the BBC have versions launched or planned for some point this year.) What use is Apple TV without the content?
The phone is certainly impressive, I think it would be absurd to state otherwise. It will defiantly be priced out of my range when it hits the UK, particularly if they do partner with a network here. I choose my network, my phone doesn't do it for me by default. To be honest, my current phone, isn't even a smart phone, but does everything the iPhone claims to be revolutionary (Sony Ericsson), bar the WiFi and touch-screen so I've got to be objective and look past the glossy interface.
This is good for the mobile market. Nokia, Sony Ericsson and Motorola will have to work harder, and make their phones better. Apple is good at innovating, and other companies are good at following and emulating, so I look forward to using versions of this or similar technology several years from now at a much reduced price when I'm in the market for such a device.

It would have been revolutionary if everyone could use it. But only Cingular customers will be able to use the phone. The truly revolutionary product will be the one that everyone can use. Until then, this is a competitor to the Blackberry -- a very small market indeed.
I agree. Not everyone can use it and you also gotta have the big bucks. I wouldn't have minded so much to pay for the $499 knowing im making a good commitment with an awesome ass phone but I cant because im with another provider. Oh well.... :(

I'm not sure what the big deal here is. The iPhone got all the attention and time because it is a completely new product from Apple. Leopard will get its attention probably at a special event/unveiling closer to when it is ready to come out.

About Engadget: We had different types of coverage. Our feed was fast and furious, about the soonest you could get the news on the Internet, and designed to serve a huge number of site visitors with the lowest possible bandwidth. Engadget provided more of a transcript of what was said, and some larger photos, on a very large web page. Even though the Mac universe is expanding?
What makes a Mac a Mac? I would argue that fact that it runs the Mac OS.
Last year, the only thing Apple sold that was a Mac were the actual physical Mac computers (MacBooks, MacBook Pros, Mac minis, Mac Pros, and XServes).
This year, we now have, in addition to that, the iPhone, a new type of Mac that still runs OS X.
Next year I would expect to see the iPod also running this new "Mac OS X", in place of the old iPod-specific OS, since I expect the new line of iPods to use this same tech.
So, the "mac world" will be expanding more and more. Why are people acting like the Mac is getting short shrift?

I gotta admit, I'm a bit disappointed as well. The iPhone, while cool, just isn't something I could see myself buying (especially at that price point). The iTV/AppleTV barely interests me at all unless it has the ability to load non-iTunes content, which doesn't seem to be in the cards right now.
I was really looking forward to a Leopard preview, and had pretty much committed to buying iWork '07 (a spreadsheet app would be really useful) and maybe iLife depending on the feature set. Replacing my iPod wasn't out of the question either.
As cool as the two announcements were, they really wasn't the broad scope of announcements I was hoping for (and have come to expect in the past).

I have no interest in either the iPhone (although admittedly cool but way overpriced) or Apple TV. I was really hoping for one of the rumors pertaining to what Apple used to be about (i.e. computers) to be true.
Apple has become so swept away by the popularity and profits of the iPod / iTunes that everything else it does seems to be suffering from a severe lack of innovation.

a) The iPhone is a computer (hell, it is actually running OS X, which makes it more of a "computer" than most other phones out there).
b) I think it is absolutely mindblowing that Apple can be criticized as suffering from a severe lack of innovation after what they have just shown off with the iPhone. If you want to see a severe lack of innovation, go watch Microsoft's CES keynote.
c) Even if you aren't specifically interested in the iPhone itself, it is notable for a lot of reasons. First, since it is running OS X, it has the potential to expand the market for OS X itself. That means more developers interested in developing for OS X, which is good for people even if they don't use the iPhone at all. And it is also good just for expanding the platform. The iPod has had a halo effect just by being associated with Apple, but the iPhone will really give people the "OS X" experience and be a great selling tool to convince more people to buy Macs. This is great for everyone.
And finally, for those not interested in the iPhone specifically, the technology behind it is still of great interest I think to Mac users and iPod users. I fully expect the tech behind it to make its way to future Macs and iPods as well.

I wish that Apple would get an indie band to perform instead of John Mayer or what ever his name is.
How about Wolf Parade, Modest Mouse, Broken Social Scene, Sleater-Kinney, Asobi Seksu...etc. Some band with more energy that appeals to the young, the independents.
IMO I don't think John Mayo is all that great of an artist. And that recent photo posted on MR does not do much to change my opinion.

I believe OSX/Mac are superior than this phone, and what tech behind this phone can "make its way to future Macs"? in your opinion?
I agree this phone is prototype of future iPods, just wonder how apple is going to avoid the market competition between this phone and future iPods.
Again, this phone is quite Palm-PDA-like, with much better UI, but not that far as a "computer" yet.

I think a guy like John Mayer is sort of a "safe bet" who plays a style of music that appeals to a fairly wide group, and at least is inoffensive to people who don't specifically like him. The problem with trying to pick an indie band is that they are more likely to only appeal to smaller segments (nothing wrong with that, but it's just one of the differences between a lot of indie bands and why they aren't "mainstream").

What more does Apple need to show you exactly? They've already shown off iTunes, Safari, Dashboard widgets, etc. running on it. I use a Treo 650 and this completely blows away what my Treo is capable of (hell, I would buy this just to not have to use Palm's crappy "Blazer" web browser). It seems PDA like probably because the specific apps they've shown off for it are optimized more for PDA/phone type use, but the full functioanlity is well beyond most PDA OS's.
As far as future tech that will make its way into Macs; the big one from what I have seen would seem to be the multitouch interface, which I think is a natural to find its way into future Mac portables, and possibly even desktops (this could blow away the recently introduced HP TouchSmart desktop).

looks better than palm? absolutely yes
more like a computer than palm? probably slightly
can do most work a computer can do? probably no

Well, yes, of course. This is the point though, it can run the full iTunes, the full Safari, etc. It is OS X. People can make other apps to do a wide variety of things. The capabilities are much closer to OS X than something like Palm OS.
Will you do all the work a computer can do? That's a good question. Heck, a Palm PDA can do some of the things a computer can do (i.e. use DocumentsToGo to edit MS Word docs), but whether this iPhone would be used that way remains to be seen.
Again, I'm not sure what other convincing you need to know that it actually does run OS X, beyond that Apple has already said it and shown it running OS X apps and capabilities, far beyond what Palm OS is capable of.

I just woke up (the Keynote was at 3AM in our time zone) and am looking through the coverage, and all I have to say is:
What? No iLife?
I've been holding off purchasing a MacBook so I could get one with iLife '07, and was planning to order one today, and I must say that I am bitterly disappointed. I really don't want to order one now, because iLife could be released at any moment.

If I was holding off until now to buy a MacBook, I would just as soon hold off until the Spring when I could get a MacBook with Leopard (and presumably iLife 07 as well, which I wouldn't have expected to already be available for sale).
