what about lemon twist coke?
lately a lot of the polls are binary. well, some of them anyway.
and actually, now that i think about it, i tried a new cola from Sapporo Breweries here in Japan. it was heavy and a little bitter but i really liked it. though i drank it too fast and i felt sick. anyway, that's my my favorite cola. i think it's 'cola gold' or something

I must say that the way that these poles are being configured lately is rather disappointing. Take this pole, for instance. I used to prefer Coke, but didn't mind Pepsi. However, about ten years ago I just got to the point of being completely burned out on colas, altogether. I haven't really liked either, since. So I'm in a position that I can't vote in this pole, because I dislike both equally.
In other words: There needs to be an option for those of us that don't fit into a simple (a) or (b) catagorization...

While I do prefer Pepsi to Coke, I like Vanilla Coke even more than those two.
Has anyone tried SoBe Mr. Green? It is similar to Dr. Pepper, but with ginseng and a slightly different flavor. I like it a lot.

It will dissolve meat. And if you've ever cleaned the drain tubes on a fountain soda machine, you'll see how diet colas form a soft solid over time -- it has the consistency of canned mushrooms.
Gross.
And that's a couple of the many reasons why I don't drink the junk.

I don't know if it's on sale in the US, but it used to be over here. One could buy it in the Virgin Mega Stores. Now you can at least get it in the UK. I honestly don't know if it's on sale anywhere outside of the UK, but it sure tastes good!
So count one vote for Virgin Cola. But, between the two on poll here, I definitely prefer Coca Cola. Pepsi's just a rip-off. It tastes quite okay, but Coke is the best. Plus, the new Coca Cola look is awesome! Haven't tried Vanilla, but I've heard it's sweet as hell, so I'd probably despise it. The original Coke's sweet enough as it is now.
So, now where's Virgin Cola in this poll?

Is it true that the corn syrup in Coke changes during Passover? I've noticed that it tastes different around that time. Worse than normal.
I'm a Pepsi fan. Coke is too heavy. It makes me sick. However, I love the Coke in the glass bottles. It doesn't have the plasticey (?) taste. If it's in the little bottles, then I prefer Coke. Otherwise, Pepsi.

I am not a big softdrink drinker, but when I do it's Diet Coke.
I gave up softdrinks for about 6 months a few years ago, and one day I had a craving for something. All that was available was a Diet Coke, so I went for it. Weirdly, it tasted really good. Apparently, I'd been off the sugar so much that I lost the taste for it a bit. I cannot stand the taste of a regular softdrink now. Besides, too much sugar in them...not good. ;)

Well, in general, at this point, I'd choose not to drink anything over drinking any cola. Indeed, even if it was a case of facing death by dehydration, drinking a cola could actually speed that up, rather than slow it down.
Say, arn, is there any possibility that you could make it possible to see what the poll count is without voting? (I'm abstaining from this poll, but I'm curious where things are at, and I'd rather not have to wait until the poll is over.) If you're worried about letting the current standings effect how people vote, might it be possible to put in an 'abstain' link that would allow you to see the results, but then prevent you from voting?

Hemlock. It's also "natural."
Phosphoric Acid (http://scifun.chem.wisc.edu/chemweek/H3PO4/H3PO4.html): found in baking powder; also used as a flavoring agent in carbonated beverages, beer, jams and jellies, and cheeses. In foods, phosphoric acid provides a tart, acidic flavor.
I hope you don't drink beer. Don't eat cookies, crackers, or tortillas--using baking powder just isn't healthy. Better to use baking powder's "natural" equivalent which is...?
Abandon your Perrier; it's full of carbonic acid!
And better stop eating oranges. Why they've started taking the oil from oranges and begun using it as a paint solvent and as a bathroom cleaner!! Just imagine what it is doing to your insides!

May 14, 2003, 11:46 AM
Being a Texas resident who has visited the Dr Pepper museum, I can answer that question! Dr Pepper is not technically a 'cola'. And frankly if you want to see why Texans are addicted to the stuff, drink some that was bottled near Waco Texas. That's where the guy who invented it, did his research. It was designed specifically for the water there, and I can attest that it tastes much much different anywhere else in the world.
I drink more Dr Pepper than any other liquid. I'm drinking some right now.
Interesting tidbit--the guy who invented Dr Pepper (he was a chemist, not a doctor) used to pride himself on being able to reverse-engineer any other drink into its separate components. Much like Coke and Pepsi, there are only a few people in the world with access to the actual ingredient list for Dr Pepper, but they have access to the lists for all other major drinks that were invented around the same time (the new Pepsi is not included in that because it post-dates the lifetime of the chemist who did the work).
Hey, you asked ;-)

Coke in Europe and Canada (at least) still use sugar instead of corn syrup (I enjoy this so much I make trips to Canada to buy Coke there). Kosher Coke is available during Passover because such food must not use grain, thus they provide the standard sugar formula. It must be specially ordered by case amounts, at least at my local grocery store. I suspect that it is possible that some stores either put extra in with the regular during this time, or simply switch their stock over to cater to their Jewish customers.

Firstly, I have given up drinking caffenated beverages, and caffene free cola just tastes nasty, but back when, it was RC all they way. Less sweet than pepsi, smoother than coke, (usually) cheaper then them both!

we all know coke changed over to new coke just to come back with corn syrup and save money, it was all planned ahead of time. They thought no one would remember what coke tasted like with sugar. But on a recent trip in Canada, I noticed you can still buy coke made with sugar, just that now I am used to the bitter burn of that cheap high fructuse corn syrup. The real coke made with sugar just didn't get it any more. But when it comes to that whimpy, sweet, watered down pepsi, just try to make a bacardi and coke with that and you will see why coke rules.

I completely fail to understand why anyone can stand any pepsi products. every pepsi i have tried has been utterly horrendous. i like coke a lot, and Dr Pepper is better, but Vanilla Coke is really the best.
also, all you critic really should read this thread. it's not asking what the best cola is. it's asking, between coke and pepsi, which is better. the poll is not asking "what's the best cola?" and only giving you 2 choices, like some communist-era eastern european election, it's seeking to find out which of these two products only is any good. arn said this on page one. so stop calling it a "BS poll" or anything like that.

FYI, here in Caracas, Venezuela, Pepsi was first and king for a long time.
Now Coke seems to rule.
Both are cheaper here than in Ohio, USA (our "home"): about 80 cents everyday for a 2 liter of Coke or Pepsi in many stores.
But a can of "Pringles" is 4 bucks or so.
Imported (Pringles) vs. manufactured in the country (Pepsi and Coke).

Hey, thanks for the link. I've had the discussion of 'pop' vs. 'soda' with many people. There was a thought that it had to do with East Coast vs. West Coast, but this clearly shows that it doesn't. Of course, both are in fact shortened versions of the original term 'soda pop', but it seems that hardly anyone realizes that.
For the record, 'cola' is a particular type of 'soda pop' that is caramel in color and contains, amoung other things, flavoring from the cola nut. Examples of cola are Coke (aka Coca Cola), Pepsi (aka Pepsi Cola), Mecca Cola, RC Cola, Jolt Cola, and so on. Other kinds of soda pop are not colas.

Hey, isn't that the renamed Cream Soda? :D
Also, my thanks to whoever it was that pointed out that Kosher Coke is still made with sugar instead of corn syrup.
FWIW, for me personally, I generally buy on price. But if all other factors are equal, I buy based on who owns the Company.

I drank Coke while I was growing up. Pepsi was okay, but given the choice, I liked Coke better.
When they changed the formula and had the whole New Coke/ Coke Classic formula fiasco, I knew the Classic stuff was different than the original. It wasn't just a small change. The new stuff is horrid. It tastes like medicine.
I know the claims that it's really still the same formula and the change to corn syrup had nothing to do with it, blah blah blah. I don't care. My taste buds tell the difference. I didn't WANT the stuff to taste like crap. Really. I don't know what they did, but the Classic and the Original are NOT the same. So I went with Pepsi, since it didn't taste like medicine.
RC is good too, as is Jolt.
Vanilla Coke is even worse than the regular stuff.

Hey, you asked ;-)

being a former texas resident, definitely Dr. Pepper, although I didn't know about the Dr. Pepper Museum.

It's true that the corn syrup is replaced for Passover, but only in a very limited run for specially labelled packages. There would be a seal on the label stating that it's "Kosher for Passover". I doubt that you've had Coke from that production run, unless you shop at kosher supermarkets. That's the only place you'd find the passover recipe.
In case you were wondering, here's the reason they change it:
Many grain-based products are prohibited on passover by the Torah. Corn is a New World "grain" for which we (Orthodox Jews) have no firm classification, as it isn't mentioned specifically in the Torah. We err on the side of caution and refrain from eating corn and some other questionable semi-grains during passover. So, the problem with Coke is that for most of the year, the label reads "high fructose corn syrup/sugar". Which one is it? Does the soda contain sugar, or the corn based sweetener? The overwhelming majority of the time, it contains corn syrup, which is the cheapest sweetener available to manufacturers, but the label leaves a little ambiguity so that Coke can't be accused of not even having natural sugar in its already unhealthy product. Therefore, Orthodox Jews used to have to refrain from drinking Coke on passover, as it probably had (forbidden) corn syrup. Recently (only a couple years ago, I think), Coke decided to produce a limited run every year of Coke containing (the more expensive) sugar, and stating so clearly on the label, so that it could sell its product to Orthodox Jews.
There you go, a little advanced kashrus for you. As a side note, many stricter families (like mine) don't even use the "Kosher for Passover" Coke, mainly for nostalgic/traditional reasons. Passover is generally viewed in the Orthodox community as a time from refraining from foods which we normally are allowed to eat, so having Coca-Cola at the seder kinda ruins that feeling. As time goes on though, and as the amount of kosher for passover products available skyrockets, nostalgia wanes. I don't see any specific reason why I would keep Coke from my seder table when I conduct one for my own family (I'm 22).

I drank Pepsi growing up, that was what my father bought. For some reason when eating at a resturnant I would order a Coke. We ate out rarely so it was a real treat! ;)

A minor point: someone a ways back said that drinking nothing would be better than drinking a cola, even if you were dehydrated.
This is not the case at all. True, there is a lot of sugar in soda, but the vast majority of it is still water. If you had to cross the Sahara drinking Coke only, you would feel bloated, belch a lot, run an increased risk of diabetes, possibly even damage your liver. Your hands might shake somewhat and you would probably require some dental attention. But you would live. If you tried to do so without drinking anything you would be vulture chow in a few days.
The human body can stand quite a high proportion of impurities in its drinking water, as was proven by the insane (French)man who rowed across the Atlantic a few years back drinking nothing but seawater - a much more toxic liquid than soda. True, he suffered liver failure, but he completed the voyage......

Pepsi.
Or to be more specific, Pepsi Max. I drink about 3 litres of it a day.
Sugar-free, but with much more flavor. I switched from full-cream Coke (by which I mean regular, normal Coke) to Pepsi Max, and without changing anything else, dropped from a size 34 waist to a 30.
The discussion about "there should be more choices" ignores what Arn said in the beginning - in a choice of two, pick one. That simple. If you can't pick one, abstain. Trying to list every possible Cola would be impossible, not to mention, nuts. And someone would always object to the fact that the poll was US-centric and how come their local variant wasn't listed, etc, etc.
Which is why I say again: Pepsi.

It seems like the point of this poll will be to see how effective the iTunes giveaway is at switching peoples opinion about which cola they drink. If you don't like Coke or Pepsi then you probably aren't going to drink Pepsi or Coke when the giveaway begins. I think this will be used for a comparison in the future. Whose ever idea this was(at least I think this is the idea), Good Thinkin':D
