Just got a Mac and I'm interested in recording vinyl into MP3 format. I have a standard pre-amp (you know, the one that Circuit City sells, that Radio Shack sells, that everyone sells) and a Technics turntable. With these two things, or equivalent, what luck has anyone had using Garage Band to record vinyl to MP3?

Thanks.

it's not the most elegant way, but if you put a 3.5mm stereo cable between the headphone plug and the audio line in on your Mac, you can record it in GarageBand.

I've done it before, and it sounds like it does when the vinyl is played though speakers (the pops are still there). Good luck! :)

I used a cable from the line out on my amp to line in om my Mac and used CD Spin Doctor.app (which comes with Toast Titanium) to record a couple of vinyl albums, with excellent result (or at least as good as expected).

do you mean it's a phono preamp?

yes, of course GB can handle this task, it's the hardware setup that has to be sussed out.

You could use Amadeus II (http://www.hairersoft.com/Amadeus.html) that has noise reduction and de-clicking tools.
