mp3 vs AAC

Just about to start importing my CD collection into iTunes. But which format to use?

I hear AAC is better quality for the same file size? True?

Also, can iTunes convert mp3 to AAC and vice-versa.

Yes, and yes.

AAC is better than .mp3 in terms of quality per bitrate. iTunes can also convert back and forth between .mp3 and AAC.

That is, of course, to answer your second questions.

You should try to avoid converting from .mp3 to AAC whenever possible. Reimport your songs from your CDs instead of from your computer to keep optimum quality.

Yes, AAC is definitley the way to go. I re-imported all my music into AAC format.

Yes AAC: there's more depth to the sound although I have found that the volume seems to be somewhat lower.

But I'd definately continue to import all my CDs with AAC and will slowly re-import all the ones I already have until they're replaced.

I dont see the need to do this because any quality gained would have to be ripped CD to ACC not ACC to MP3 the quality in the MP3s is already gone and cant be brought back, just tring to help :D

I very highly recommend against converting between mp3 and AAC. Each time you convert you will loose quality in the sound file. It can even give you really terrible quality with just one conversion. Just import directly from the (uncompressed) CDs.
