MBP won't boot

My 17" MBP Core Duo (10.4.8) is hanging on reboot. It gets to the startup screen with the blue progess indicator ("Starting Mac OS X"), and the progress indicator grows to the max, and then it just stalls. I've tried it in Safe Mode, and same problem. The disk isn't doing anything once it stalls - it just sits there. Any suggestions?

Try fsck (http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214) in Single User Mode. :)
