Virtual PC info please!

I am looking into buying Virtual PC for my PB... i am looking in the mac store and i notice many different ones to choose from... Virtual PC with windows XP, Virtual PC with DOS... i was wondering... when would you use the virtual PC with DOS???

Anyone use Virtual PC with Windows XP?

Also what is the Virtual PC 6.0 upgrade? Do you need to buy that when you buy Virtual PC 6.0 with Windows XP?

You would get this is you already have your own copy of Windows that you can install on it.
The VPC 6 upgrade is just an upgrade to v6 from a previous version (not sure if it has to be from v5, or if it can be from any previous version).

I use VPC with DOS to play some ye olde computer games - like the old lucasarts graphic adventures :)

Win 95 or 98se are the fastest Windows OSs on Virtual PC. Anyway a new version of RealPC is coming out in June so wait til then and it may be better than VPC. There are rumors RealPC is going to have things like graphics acceleration in it.

I have Virtual PC windows XP PRO, and it works fine.

One thing you should know is that Virtual PC is nowhere near as fast as windows on a pc. It is very slow on almost all applications, though it is stable.


Avoid the older versions of VPC, like the Windrows 98 edition, they have too many bugs.

Old versions do have more bugs than Xp, but they are a lot faster on VPC. Anyway Win2000 is faster and more stable than WinXP. So it is whether speed or stability is the most important.

I guess I have high standards, because I think all of the versions of Virtual PC are really slow. I don't even find them useable for anything. :( But if it works you some people, all power to you.

Since the program is emulating a PC inside your mac, speed can sometimes be a problem. I can play GTA in windows 98 on my iMac 500Mhz G3 JUST. I can also run a few basic applications without problems. If your PB is reasonably new then obviously it will be alot faster, however to get the best speed I think the general rule of thumb is to use the Minimum OS requirements that you need for your software. e.g If it'll run happily in Windows 95 then use that.

Also try searching the Software forum for more information as I think there have been quite a few threads on Virtual PC previously.

Having used XP Pro and 2kPro in VPC 5 and VPC 6.0.1.3147 (heheh), it is obvious that XP is a dog in the speed department.

VPC 6.0+ is optimized for NT-based apps, so it runs the post-95, 98 OS faster. :)

But if you want to see S-l-o-w, for real, then check out Debian Linux, hosted by VPC, with the little mac 68k-emulator, running Photoshop 3.. <laughs>

Stick with Win2kPro :cool:

XP runs fine under Virtual PC, you can make it a little snappier by turning off all the eye candy. Go to Control Panel - Peformance and Maintenance - Adjust Visual Effects. There you can turn off all the fade ins, etc. Makes XP look like 2k and it feels more responsive.

I'm with you on that.
I have tried many VPC setups, and VPC 6 with Win 2K seems fastest overall (on a fst Mac, that is...).
Note that the look and feel of Win 95 seem faster, but actually using apps is not!

Has anyone run IIS under Windows (XP Pro or 2K) via VirtualPC? If so, are you actually able to use a VPC Windows instance as a personal web server? I do a lot of web development, and I would need to check some of my work against IIS. If VPC can let this happen, I'll never need a WinPC again...
