Bill Richardson, governor of the US state of New Mexico, has become the latest Democrat to declare an interest in the 2008 presidential election.

He has announced that he is setting up a presidential exploratory committee, the first step in the race.

Mr Richardson would become the first Hispanic president, if elected.

Former First Lady Hillary Clinton and African-American Senator Barack Obama are also running in what correspondents say will be a highly diverse contest.

Mr Richardson, 59, has served in a number of senior government posts. He was energy secretary, and the US ambassador to the United Nations during Bill Clinton's presidency.

He is also a former congressman, and would hope to mobilise the considerable Hispanic vote in the US.

Q: what's more confusing than sen clinton announcing on a saturday?
A: gov richardson announcing on a sunday.

ultimately, i don't think he'll get the nomination, but i think he'll make a good candidate. and suddenly i'm doubting the first clause there.

Historically, governors are more electable than senators. Richardson would have a broader appeal, nationwide, I imagine.

I like Bill, I hope he does well though I dont know if he can muster the $$$ thats needed for a campaign. I think I like Bill better then any of the other guys and he has ran a state something none of the other guys can claim. Plus he's a moderate.

I know absolutely nothing about the man, so he's my favorite so far.

Vilsack is up there too, but I know a little about him from his Daily Show appearance, and he only seems partially abhorrent.
