View Full Version : My Magsafe Just Caught Fire!!

My MagSafe has been having some problems lately, The wires started to show but I didn't have time to take it in so I wraped it in electrical tape for a while. Tonight I took it off and it wouldn't keep charging it kept disconnecting. So I put it back in and it started to charge again. The next thing you know it is SMOKING and it smelled like burning plastic. This is crap because I have freaking exam stuff all over this machine along with art projects due tomorrow! How should I handle this with Apple! I am so angry because I have to study and now I can't! It freaking caught fire!! What the hell!!!:mad:

well this isn't unheard of. get them to replace your magsafe cord and if your laptop is damaged, have them replace it.

run it off the battery, if you need to charge it, find another computer. best of luck

I had something similar happen to me. The plastic around the connecter tore and exposed wires and i got electrocuted. I called apple care and they told me the only way i could get it replaced was to take it to an apple store. Bring the computer too.. I then drove 200 miles to the nearest apple store and they replaces it right away. The guy on the applecare call was more concerned about me getting electrocuted than helping me replace the adapter. Apparently it is impossible to tell over phone if the thing was my fault or a defect.

If they even so much as try and blame me, it's back to windows :) Just kidding bust honestly I could have burned my house down if we are thinking realisticially. And I think I just swallowed electrical tape :P Oh and I have to get a new battery. Whatever the hell just happened screwed up my battery horribly. The capacity dopped from 93 all the way down to like 67 I'm so pissed.

Bring the entire comp. Show the adapter. Mention the battery. Tell them that everything was working fine before the fire. They should replace the battery too.

Just to mention I didnt actually see fire, it was just smoking... so it counts as a fire. And I will but I might ask for a new unit and say because I feel like I am in danger, which I sort of really do feel like that. It might have even been the unit that contributed to this.

do you think I could get a new machine?

Sorry, but I have to ask. If the magsafe adapter was broken with wires sticking out, and it was malfunctioning, why didn't you stop using it? And on top of that, you kept fiddling with it by applying and removing electrical tape, likely exacerbating the problem.

Use a little common sense next time. You're lucky things weren't any worse.

They wont be able to tell. Tell them it caught fire and that you had to smack it out with a towel. It will make the thing more dramatic. And in truth if you hadn't seen it start to smoke t would have caught fire.

Umm I didn't have the time and I needed my laptop! And electrical tape is nothing bad for it. Well of course electrical tape isn't bad, but a sloppy patch job is. The wires weren't properly isolated and as a result, shorted out.

Sorry if my post seems harsh, but you're lucky it didn't completely burn up, along with all your data.

The fact is you shouldn't mess around with something electrical if it has frayed wires. If you try and patch it with electrical tape, and still use it, you are taking a huge risk of burning your house down or electrecuting yourself.

You ended up pretty lucky, it could have been a lot worse.

I think Apple should make it clear that just because your adapter is MagSafe does not mean you can yank it out of the computer by the cord. Just like some of us were taught in elementary school, when you are unplugging an electrical appliance, you pull the plug out of the wall by the plug itself and not the cord. Obviously, pulling the cord exposes the shroud and even bare wires. MagSafe is a safety feature for 'that one time' use, not a lazy feature for every use.

For some reason, when I read your posts, they sound much louder in my head than normal. Why is it you always seem like you are excited and/or worked up about something?

That said, it does seem like you are trying to make the situation a bigger deal than it is because you feel you are entitled to something you aren't. It's not Apple's fault you continued to use the MagSafe connector after it was damaged (by you, nonetheless). This entire situation is your fault, and I sure hope you don't demand a new machine of Apple because you certainly aren't entitled to one, IMO.

Oh, for cryin' out loud. You damaged the power cord, blotched up a "fix" for it (electrical tape...) and the machine "caught fire". Quit looking for someone else to blame this on.

Come on dude use some common sense.

No matter how well an electrical cord is made, it's still an electrical cord. This is why people burn their homes down during the holidays using outdated extension cords and stuff. No one is blaming you for the cord wearing, but once it reached the point where it needed to be patched you should have stopped using it all togther.

Everything that happened after you made the decision to keep using it IS your fault.

No offense, but Apple should not have to deal with customers like you. How can you honestly think this is anyone's fault but your own? Or even moreso, some kind of manufacturer's defect? You're lucky your ignorance didn't get you killed.

Step out of the apple bubble and use some general common sense when dealing with electricity.

You CAN make a TEMPORARY patch for electrical cords, but if you use that for too long, or fail to patch it correctly, you are risking injury. This is something universal to all electrical devices despite the manufacturer.

Personally, I don't understand why you can't just take a slightly better picture. I mean, that has to be the worst picture of something I've ever seen.

All of us here watched in suspense the big MagSafe hoax unfold last year, where someone who likes to talk about his Aston Martins obviously set fire to his computer, and tried to fool the Mac World into taking his side against Apple. So we're all a little leery about claims like this.

Show me where it says in your warranty information that CONTINUING TO USE a MagSafe connector which has had the internal wires EXPOSED and taped over with electrical tape by someone who is NOT an Apple Certified Repair Technician does not void the warranty?

If it is said by a technician then it is fine :) here you go.... second post down

Why don't you just...
You know why.

I work at an Apple Authorized reseller if you purchased it within two weeks we would exchange it, of course this may vary by computer store. You can put tape on it, but to be safe just pick up a new MagSafe, we sell ours for $79.00 dollars, which is the standard price.
Bolded for emphasis. And what does this have to do with the warranty?

I don't understand why you don't just take a picture of it from a few feet back. You don't have to have the MagSafe literally in front of the lense. Just step back, take the focused picture, and crop it.

The fact that you still believe you are completely innocent and not responsible for it in any way is baffling. As a consumer you have a responsibility to use your products in a responsible manner. You failed to do that because you simply didn't want to lose the access to your macbook.

You made the conscious decision to do what was easy instead of what was responsible.

As fuzzy as this photo is, it seems obvious that there are no signs of the type of scorching I would expect to see if there was a short circuit. Also, is it just me, or do the dimensions of the Magsafe connector look off? Too long and thin.

You can stop all of this by taking a clear picture of the MagSafe and the MagSafe port on your MacBook. I don't see why, at this point, 67 seconds of work wouldn't be worth proving to all of the people here that you're telling the truth.
