You're welcome!

Don't forget the /fps command via the chat panel, so you can see how your system holds up in the bigger battles. We'd love to hear some detailed reports on that.

Thanks so much! Now playing dota is like playing it on a windows computer! On skibi i averaged 100fps and on dota around 80. 1.83ghz macbook pro. I have yet to try a footie war or something like that.

That didn't work for me is there another command line somewhere? Is there a command to show FPS in a single player game?

This is awesome. Now all I have to do is get a AV video chat program that works in MSN messenger and I can get rid of my windows partition!

Excellent, I can tell performance increased dramatically!

I was able to bump up all settings to High and go to 1680x1050 (previously 1024x768) and get 100+ FPS (averaging around 130, often peak over 150).

iMac CD 2.0 GHz
X1600 256MB
2GB RAM

No idea what FPS I was getting before, but this is obviously better. Load times also seemed to halve. Previously I could count to 10 before the map would load, now I barely make it to 5! A rough benchmark, but still impressive!

I've loved your games since Warcraft: Orcs and Humans. I begged my parents to buy a G3 (we had an LC III) so I could play Warcraft II because it was just the coolest game I'd ever seen. Starcraft was my favorite game for years. I've been playing War3 since 2003 and still play it more than any other game. WoW is also an amazing game that I really enjoyed (too much so, in fact, which is why I stopped).

So what I'm really trying to say is THANK YOU Blizzard, for this port, and for your ongoing support of Mac gaming. This one port may not make you much money directly, but this kind of dedication to Mac gaming keeps many, many of us coming back to you, year after year, game after game.

And lastly, thanks to Rob for always being willing to answer our questions and keeping us up to date on the inner workings of Blizzard!

I just played a 1v1.. I was getting about 49 fps in the beginning, but forgot to check it again when I was fighting and such. At 1280x800x32 on my MacBook (2Ghz, 2GB), it ran very smooth (although I did have a few settings down to Medium). Oh, and I owned the other guy :)

I was so excited when I read that the patch had Intel Mac support, I nearly crapped myself! No need for me to reboot into Windows anymore! Thanks so much Blizzard!!!

On a side note, I seem to be experiencing some sounds not playing, as well as others not playing as loud as they should be. Kinda strange, but the UB is definintely worth it!!

I'd like to learn any details you can gather about sounds not playing or volume issues. The sound engine in Warcraft III for Intel Mac is a bit different from the one in the PowerPC version, which still uses the same Miles library as originally shipped.

My email address is in the sig.

Just installed the patch in Windows (Boot Camp) and I feel confident the OS X version not outperforms windows!

The FPS under Windows jumps around oddly from 39 - 60 - 100+
Under OS X it's constantly higher and I have never seen it dip as low as 39 so far.

Eric5h5
Jan 23, 2007, 04:51 PM
Thanks Eric! Now I know if I can expect any performance improvements on the PPC side.

The point of a universal binary is that it runs natively on PPC and x86; since it already ran natively on PPC before, but not x86 (it had to be emulated), that pretty much answers the question. There are the usual minor bugfixes though.

sweet - I missed out a lot on this game because my old iMac G3 500 couldn't quite power it well enough to be enjoyable, so I gave up after a few quests.

Now I can rock it bigtime on my macbook pro, Only problem I'm having is that the icon didn't come through properly on the install - besides, I'd like to get a new, fresh icon to put in my dock anyway. Can anyone recommend a nice aqua warcraft 3 icon? I searched xicons.com to no avail...

Thanks in advance

It's there, it's just that Finder may not show it immediately. Open Terminal and type this (and hit Return) to get the Finder to update the icon:
touch /Applications/Warcraft\ III\ Folder/Warcraft\ III.app

Probably double-click it? I'm assuming you have Stuffit Expander installed, which will most likely uncompress the .bin or make it into a format that can be opened directly.

lol, on my mac pro at full 2560x1600 on my 30" cinema I get around 155-190 fps consistently. I haven't built a huge army yet to really stress it, but had a good 50 on 50 or so battle with all the options turned as high as they go and it only went down to around 155-160.

Looks AWESOME on my 30 with the full resolution. I just wish they would give me a play in a window option so I could multitask.

WC3 crashed on me today while playing DotA. Totally random crash. I looked through the crash log and it said that physical disc missing or something like that i think. I am using a NO-CD, could this be the issue? (Though, in 1.20 it never crashed).

Are you sure it wasn't the traditional DotA Fatal Error (where the host gets a fatal error message and all players in the game also crash, whether on internet or LAN)? That has been an issue with DotA Allstars forever, and, although it is rare these days, it has never been completely erased.

All of you who play DotA should try out my AoS map, Land of Legends.
Download it at http://www.wizera.net

It's been under development for over 2 years, and I think if you give it a fair chance you'll see that it's a lot more fun than DotA.

I have a PPC so this doesn't apply, but thanks in general to Blizzard for A. patching the game and B. posting here to tell folks about it. It shows a real customer commitment.

rbarris, a separate issue, and maybe outside your bailiwick: there's a current thread here on poor Diablo II performance in hardware mode on G4s. http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=271142. Maybe you or some other Blizzard folks could comment?

testing out frame rates, in a big battle.... 85vs85 or so..... i get 4-10 fps... just looking at my base i get 30 tops. never goes higher. damn 3 year old 933 MHz iBook G4 :( and yet, i still have a 65% win account with 200 games+

My advice would match that given by others on that same thread. If performance is lacking in GL mode, on your particular config, then try software mode. I didn't see if the OP had actually tried that yet.

I'd just like to say that my MB now never drops below mid 30's fps with 1280x800x32 resolution and every graphics option maxed. My gf's imac core duo 17" never drops below low 70's fps with 1440x900x32 with all options maxed. AND war3 now has sound, and doesn't randomly crash in multiplayer games.

A really fantastic job by blizzard. Such a pleasure to play this game now! :D

One question though - does anyone have a guess as to why I can't host games? I think there's probably some setting on my router, but I haven't ruled out a setting in war3...

Easiest way is to DMZ ur gaming computer's ip through the router. But that makes you a bit more invulnerable. There are other ways that's a little bit more techy through adding ip etc

I can't go to the Options menu without it hanging and then crashing everytime... ?

delete preferences. That worked for me in the same problem.

Anyone notice that the sound coming from spell effects (e.g. a stun in DotA etc.) is a bit soft compared to other sounds e.g. ambient/Hero speech?

What I've noticed is that the speech like "the Scourge is OWNING" or "____ is Dominating!" is nearly or entirely silent, whereas hero speech and spell effects are both normal...

Go to http://www.portforward.com/ , select your router and choose the Warcraft 3 section. Everything is in there. That's how I have set up warcraft 3 to work with my airport express.

thanks all, I actually figured it out myself. :) Appreciate the responses though.

Like wc3banlist? Nope, none at the moment. And I believe they don't have any plans to release an OSX version.

It may be coincidence, but I've kernel panicked twice now playing WCIII UB (the campaigns) on my Mac Pro. Just added RAM, but the RAM has been quite stable all the rest of the time (including playing other games). Not sure what to make of this.

Today we're releasing the OS X universal binary patch for Warcraft III. It is available as an automatic patch by connecting to battle.net.

OH MY GOD!

I have been waiting for this for so long!

umm... mine does have widescreen options now.

ah, is that new? Because last time I tried it, it wasn't actually widescreen, it just stretched the pixels out to fill the extra screen space, and made everything look streched

I have a 5.1 speaker system connected via optical audio, and maybe that is the cause of the problem, but... Has anyone else been noticing kind of weird sound since the latest patch? Some things are way quieter than they used to be, some sounds don't play at all, and sometimes when music is playing it cuts in and out.

Even with the patch, WCIII does not support true widescreen. I wouldn't hold your breath for any updates to make it so, either.

Your hunch is correct, this is virtually guaranteed not to change.

I have a strange problem with the new patch. After like 40minutes of playing my interconnection dies and i have to restart the router. This only happens with wc3, never for example when i download and upload at 1,2mb/s.

I reset the router to its factory settings but that did not help.

Any suggestions?

rbarris probably thinks: "They can't never get enough", or something along the lines. I'm really happy for the UB patch, because you shouldn't be forced to boot Win XP if you want to play Warcraft III on your brand new Macbook Pro. Thank you for 1.21!

However, I'm also curious why the problem with the stretched gfx on widescreen notebooks can't be fixed. Sad to hear.

With 1.21, you made Warcraft III playable on my Macbook Pro, now it's time to make it enjoyable by un-stretching the pic :)

Pretty sure Rbarris only meant that true widescreen will never be supported. It would provide players with an advantage over others since they could see more horizontally.

I think a fix to remove stretching with bars on the side of the screen is still possible. Also, you can play in windowed mode with apple key + m, it removes stretching but I havent been able to get used to it.

That's really strange... With your system, you shouldn't have been noticing poor performance even before it was universal. Are you sure everything else is running at proper speed (ie, other applications)?

that's very strange. On my macbook it now runs at low 30's fps in pitched battles with every setting cranked. On a core duo imac it runs mid 60's to mid 90's, everything on high. your comp should eat it for breakfast twice over.

As mentioned in the patch notes for 1.21, the TFT CD installer can't handle the new file layout on the hard drive for the universal application. So, you have to finish the TFT installation before applying Patch 1.21.

Try this approach

Install War3 from CD, do not patch it up
Install TFT from CD
Then log on and patch up to 1.21.

The higher the resolution you run it at, the more it taxes the video card. I run the game at 1280x800 on my 20" cinema display and it runs as well as at the same resolution on the macbook's internal screen. If I upped the resolution to the max of the display, then yes, the gameplay would suffer dramatically.

Does this patch only work for RoC? On my Applications list on "about this mac" it states that RoC is universal and TFT is still PowerPC. If this is correct will it be patched as well? I have actually found a bug when running TFT:

When I have been on a game that requires a sizeable amount of memory (or when I have played for a while, I can't really tell) and I exit the game (as in, the actual game engine) the system just freezes and I have to Command-Option-Escape to get back to OS X.

Other than that I think it's amazing that you guys port your games in-studio. You set a really good example that I hope other will follow. Taa.

So, weird problem.

I have a Mac Pro, which had never frozen before. Now, three times my Mac Pro has frozen while sitting in the channel for a while in WC3 since the UB patch. It completely locks up, and force quit doesn't work. Once the screen went black, but usually it just freezes. I also noticed that it makes my fans spin up a lot, and they instantly spin down if i quit or even window the program. When my computer freezes this way, if I restart and boot into WC3, it will freeze again within about a minute.

So, between the freezes, the fans, and refreezing rapidly if repeated right away, it appears that some bug in the new patch makes my video card overheat! Has anyone else experienced this problem?

i have the same problem on my intel macbook, though specifically the problem happens for me when i use CMD-Q to quit. screen locks up, and the fans keep running until i force quite. interestingly, once locked up, usually CMD-OPT-esc immediately causes WC TFT to quit, rather than bringing up a program list for me to actually force-quit. any fix to this?

This is probably a dumb question...

I just got my very first Mac at home (24" iMac -- whee!) and would love to run WC3 natively. I bought WC3 when it first came out. Do the original CDs include the OS X version so I can play it natively, or do I need to buy it again?

I'd check my game box to see, but it's at home and I'm at work, and if it doesn't have the OS X version then I want to go ahead and order one to be overnighted for the weekend. :-)

Thanks.

The program doesn't crash, the whole system locks up, so there is no chance for the console to report anything.

Nearly all of Blizzard's products have both Windows and Mac versions on the same disc. Too bad more companies aren't like that.

I just installed the WC3 and TFT on my 2.0 ghz Core Duo Macbook with 1.25gb ram, and all I get at medium settings with a bunch of the extra effects turned off (@ 1280x800x32) is like 22-24 fps. This is on a 1v1 map in the very beginning of the game! Am I doing something wrong? I only have about 5 gigs free left on my hdd, could that be a problem? Also, would bumping up my ram to 2 gigs help? It seems that for a game this old, I should be able to run it pretty smoothly even with integrated graphics...

QCassidy352

I don't know... but those fps are too low. I get ~30 in 5v5 DOTA on my 2 Ghz core duo macbook with 2 GB RAM. I also have a lot more free HD space than you, but I don't think that should much matter. Maybe it's the RAM... do you have any pageouts after playing?

QCassidy352
Apr 21, 2007, 07:42 PM
This (http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/lackofram.html) is a pretty good summary. Basically, "To free RAM for other applications and processing, data is copied from RAM to a swap file. This is known as a page-out."

When I had 1 GB RAM and war3 was not intel native, I would get tens of thousands of pageouts each time I played on my macbook. The result was fairly choppy performance at times. Now that I have 2 GB and the game doesn't need Rosetta, I get 0 pageouts. Check activity monitor after you play and see if you have any. If you do, then more RAM would help performance.

kallaway1
Apr 21, 2007, 11:19 PM
Thanks for the explanation, cassidy. I tried it out and I didn't seem to accumulate any page-outs after playing the game for 5-10 minutes. I did get a ton of page-in's, however. Does that mean anything? My frame rates are still hovering in the 20's =/ I don't mind coughing up some money for extra ram (patriot ddr2 667 1gb sticks are only $44~ on newegg after rebate now), although I'm wondering if that would actually help.

If you're not getting pageouts, I wouldn't think more RAM would help. Since our machines are the same except for RAM, I can't really explain the performance you're seeing. As I said, I have the settings maxed and still get better fps than you do, which doesn't make sense.

Hey all,

I can't get Warcraft III to mount on my MacBook Pro. I used to have it installed as I migrated it from my old PowerBook - and it ran perfectly well on my MacBook Pro. But I wanted to install Frozen Throne - so, as per directions, I went to uninstall my original installation so I could load both the original game and the expansion before applying the update...

Only problem now is that the original game disc won't mount. I borrowed a friend's copy and it won't mount either. Both discs mount successfully on my friend's machine. Interestingly, the Frozen Throne disc will mount on my machine.

Any thoughts?

Ah, I as well. Though it happens in any online game; it need not be DOTA or some other custom game. Also, my game doesn't "crash"; it merely begins to lag horribly, lacks sound, and eventually causes my network connection to drop. As per the others, my network connection can only be restored by restarting the computer or by re-establishing connection through the System Preferences.

Please somebody acknowledge this issue and make a fix! I simply do not play this game anymore, as the problem is extremely frustrating, and my win ratio has dropped to an annoyingly low number. Though, I would like to resume playing...

Are you playing on wireless at the time of lagging and lost net connectivity?

On some systems we have seen this behavior when overheating of the CPU was a factor - it would cause thermal throttling where the CPU slows itself down, then some traffic from the wireless chip would be lost, and the hardware driver would get confused leading to a loss of connectivity.

Not sure if this is what is happening in your case; an interesting test if you are on wireless would be to shut off wireless networking and play by ethernet, and see how that affects the situation. Also, if you suspect overheating is a factor, you could download SMCFanControl2 and use it to pump up the system fan speeds during gameplay, also an interesting experiment.

But this does not solve my initial problem. I still can't play WC3. I'm a big dota fan and it kills me I can't play. I sold my PC and my mac is my only option. I just need this one game on my computer and I'm satisfied.

Anyway, I installed Windows XP using Bootcamp and this time, ROC works! but once I install FT, it won't open and gives me an error message saying something about, "memory can not be read".

I've tried nearly everything and I'm just desperate for some solution now.
Please someone help!

Try running MemTest.

I dont think a Mem Test will help. And I haven't patched it up to 1.21 yet but should it matter?

I thought the game is suppose to work before you even patch it up, so you can patch it when you connect to Battlenet. But I cant even start up the game yet.

any other suggestions?

If you use HFSX+ (case sensetive filesystem) you need to make a HFS+ image and install into that because blizzard looks for filenames with other "cases" than the real name the files has.

HFS+ is default thought so if you haven't change anything that should be fine.

In that case all you need to do is install ROC, not update anything, install TFT, and then go to:
http://www.blizzard.com/support/?id=mwr0744p#universal

And get the universal 1.21 patch for mac, install that and you should be good to go.

If you need more help add 60208991 on icq/aim or dospam@gmail.com on msn/jabber.

Iīm having troubles aswell. I have to force quit every time. Any idea whatīs going on? And my MPB SD goes from 2000rpm on both fans (@ desktop) to 6000rpm x2. Seems a bit too much of a workload for such an old program, or?

Having similar quit problems. I have to force quit everytime, and if not w3 will just freeze. I never crashed with custom games, dota, or ladder.

Thank you.

I figured out what my problem was. Apparently my quicktime was out of date and I had no idea you needed Quicktime to play the game. Since I was a PC user I didn't even have Quicktime installed on my old com. Any how, did the update and everything is working perfectly. Now my Macbook Pro has become the best laptop I have ever owned.

Cheers.

So I'm trying to update my WC3 installation to Universalness. But every time I launch the patcher (or, indeed, WC3 itself) the app accidentally quits before it gets a chance to bounce once. The crashlog reads thus:

I notice that you're using ROC patcher, have you TFT installed as well? Patching a ROC/TFT install with the ROC patch could be something to do with it

Have you tried the latest 1.21b standalone patcher?

minimum FPS for TfT is mid80's running everything maxed, that is 100v100v100v100 lan
seen it over 130 in lower loads. Boot's very quickly!

WOW on the other hand, everything maxed, lucky to get 15FPS when questing.

Computer specs in my sig.

Only gripe is that WC3 and WOW dont release ram after quiting, WOW is terrible for that.

Cheers.

Yep - just tried it, crashed before it managed to open (like it started to bounce then died). Virtually the same crash report as before.

My install is ROC only. I'm on a MacBook Pro 2.13GHz, OS X 10.5.2.

Last resort ( other than deleting the WC3 folder and re-installing ), I suppose, is to delete the plist file under ~/Library/Preferences, unless you've already done that?

The only other option, is to install/patch WC3 on a PPC machine, if you have one? My ROC/TFT install was done on my PB, patched to 1.21, and then copied across to my MacBook....

The crash report isn't that informative, unfortunately....

Irritatingly, this problem seems to extend to all PPC apps. Rosetta, seemingly, does not function on my system.

So it's not a WC3-related issue, really. It's worse.

Sound is much better when running WCIII: TFT on WinXP. Is there a way to make the experience much more pleasant for my ears when running the game on Leopard? It's like the sound positioning is off on Leopard, which creates a void in the sound field when playing the game. For example, when a unit is created, or something is happening to that newly created unit, such as it taking damage, and I'm scrolled to the opposite side of the map I can't hear anything, so the unit ends up dying or sitting there unbeknownst. It's very frustrating, because I actually get better video performance running on Leopard than I do when running on WinXP. The sound issue is keeping me from playing it on Leopard, because I feel handicapped when I play.

I run both operating systems on my 15" 2.5 Ghz MacBook Pro, which has 4 GB of RAM.

Any ideas?

I don't know, but that's interesting. I wonder if it's related to the sound problems I have with DotA under leopard (but not xp).

This is awesome. Now all I have to do is get a AV video chat program that works in MSN messenger and I can get rid of my windows partition!

kinda out of opic but:
i had much problems with looking for a good MSN mac alternative, check "aMSN" its the most compatible prog with msn available atm.. yes supports av chat.

and yes, warcraft runs sweet, nice work! Blizzard must be an example for all gaming industries, coz even if the mac share is low (~14%), you cant just ignore this part of consumers if you want to be called a good company

Perhaps it has to do with Leopard being 64-bit, whereas XP is 32-bit. ???

OpenGL is not worse than DirectX, nor the other way around. When a game is programmed well, it will run well, no matter what API is going to be used.

I'm having issues where if I install ROC, then install TFT, and load the game it tells me my OpenGL is out of date and proceeds to close Wc3. Weird, if I click on any Wc3 game it loads both the ROC & TFT Icon, then just closes giving me an error. Any ideas?

It use to be fine when I had my 22inch LCD at Univ, at home without my LCD I've had plenty of issues.

Based on some of the feedback in this thread and emails, we have made some changes in the latest patch v1.22 -

- sound effects should behave more correctly (including DotA)

- you can now limit the game's frame rate using the 'maxfps' chat command - this can help your laptop/desktop run cooler as desired

- the hang on exit after playing network games should be resolved

- the "port in use" error on battle.net games under Leopard, we were not able to reproduce internally in a very reliable way, however some changes were made which may reduce the frequency with which this happens - we'd appreciate user feedback on that.

Hi All,

Don't know where else to post this.

The problem I have is that my Mac desktop resized after force quitting WOW. Now the desktop is larger than my computer screen and moves around (very annoying) when I move the cursor. WOW screen is sized correctly when playing the game. I have returned to the game and tried to change the Video display options, without any success.

I have tried changing the screen resolution, deleting various .plist files (library>display), and checking the System Preferences>Accounts>StartUp Items (nothing was added).

I also rebooted. The desktop picture looks fine initially, then after a couple of seconds, it jumps to a larger size when the aliases (shortcuts) load. I am guessing that a java script is loading.

I have other users on this computer and their desktops are unaffected by this. I would hate to have to uninstall WOW, but will probably quit the game instead of dealing with this issue.

Does anyone else have this problem? Do you know how to turn it off?

Thanks in advance.

hi,
i'm having the exact same issues with regard to desktop resizing, as well as blurred pixels, on a macbook that shutdown when the battery died. i tried resetting the pram and ran applejack on the machine, but was not able to resolve the issue. i have noticed that the desktop is rendered properly when it initially loads, but then after a second or so it seems to pop and expand.

any help would be great.
thanks
