Okay before this takes off I just wanted to point out that this topic has been done before. Though it always makes for interesting discussion.

No cheating really - I think most American travellers treat each of our countries as separate - though most only make it to London it seems!

Good to hear a Scottish resident grouping the British Isles - I had a Scottish father and lived in Edinburgh for 3 years at Art College, and didn't hear too many Scots grouping their country with England. I still like the concept and title of Great Britain anyway.

It varies depending who i'm talking to actually. I do tend to split them when talking to non-european people (eg my Location on here) because the number of times i've had...

Me : "I'm from the UK"
Them : "Cool, so where in England are you?"

...is worrying.

UK, Iceland, Norway, Finland, Denmark, Luxembourg, Belgium, Holland, Germany, France, Spain, Portugal, Italy, Greece, Turkey, Majorca, Egypt, Djibouti, Saudi Arabia, Kenya, Pakistan, Singapore, Australia, Bahrain, Dubai (and other UAE), Qatar, USA, Bahamas, Barbados, Canada, Mexico

I count that as 31, but if you want to be picky, you can also add 3 for UK and 1 for Gibraltar!

Yeah, I hear that. i was in Tokyo earlier in the year and I met some other travellers at the airport and that asked me where i was flying to, I said "London".

She said "Which one?"

To which I replied, drunkenly, sarcastically, at 5am, "Is there another?"

It did of course turn out that thse people were Canadians flying to London, Canada. I wasn't to know, but they were REALLY offended. Served me right for being drunk at an airport, but what else do you do when the only shop in the airport terminal is called "Beer & Chips" - I love Japan!

Only England (the country, not the UK), Danmark, Nederland, Belgique, Deutschland, la France, Monaco, Helvetia, Österreich, Hungária, Česká Republika and Slovenskej Republiky.

So that's 12. Hope to go to Russia once, too. The US doesn't appeal to me, though. Well, mayby Cupertino, 1st Infinite Loop...

If I include USA, where I'm going in two week and the two counties I landed in but never left the airport then 11 different countries :

England (My Home)
Scotland (Guess it's seperate unless you say Great Britain as one)
France (Lived there for a year)
Spain
Portugal
Switzerland (Worked there for a year)
Croatia
Austria
The Netherlands
Belgium
USA (Soon, and maybe Canada as I'll be not so far away in NYC)

How can anyone be offended if you don't know some silly town apeing the name of one of the main capitals of the world? That really offends me, actually, and I'm not even from the UK! Damn, are all Canadians that stupid to think everyone knows there is 'another' London? Gawd, that's lame!

Whenever I see a map of the US it also very much offends me to see how many towns and cities there are over there that just 'stole' the names of old, European and Asian cities. Really lame. Can't they think of their own names? Really stupid. And then they all expect the Russian to know that St. Petersburg really IS a town in the US. I wonder if anyone in the US knows there is a St. Petersburg in Russia too?!

There is this anecdote in Europe that when you tell an American you're Dutch he goes and asks if you know his friend who lives in Copenhagen. That's stupid.

Sorry to bash in this post, I just hate it when people are so stunningly uninterested.

Well I don't think they stole the names as such - they were most likely founded by adverturers of the international community and named them in homage or something like that - pretty unoriginal really, but times were different! I don't know this for a fact, but it's a pretty educated guess. :)

This remind me a young american lady, who told me once that the italian had "stolen" the name of Syracuse from the US city...
All this is emphasized by the internet : if you do a search in Google for "syracuse", you won't easily find the original referance.

What's wrong with copying the names? Our country was founded by immigrants who named things after their homes and countries they came from. I don't think its all that bad - but I would agree that knowing where the names came from, at least the town you live in, should be something you should know.

And not all names are borrowed. A french cartographer looked at the map of the west coast US (not sure when, but probably 1700s/1800s) and named the area between what is now California and Washington - Oregon. Not based on anything or any person, only because it sounded good to him ;)

And in the North East/New England where I grew up there are a lot of place names within the towns that have Native American origins.

As for people who don't know the geography - well, ignorance has a cure, but people need to want to know.

okay now that we have all showed off and feel much better ;) what is this poll good for ?
how about what cars we have driven in our lifetimes ?
what types of restaurants we have eaten in ?
or jeans brand or or or ...

this is almost as bad as which cola we prefer, apart from the fact that neither pepsi nor coke have 'boasting-potential'

hats off to whomever counted majorca (mallorca) as a country

Umm...it might interest you to know that the United States was formed from European colonies. Thus the city and state I live in is called New York and was previously called New Amsterdam. It's not uncommon to have cities and states named after European cities or provinces. There are also many cities and states with Native American names.

And to the UK posters above, the overwhelming majority of Americans consider the UK a single country, and consider England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland to be somewhat akin to our States. Of course, Americans have to be the most geographically ignorant people of any developed or even semi-developed nation, so they generally call the UK something else like England, Britain, or Great Britain, but regardless of what they call it they are thinking of the entire territory of the UK (except for Northern Ireland which they tend to forget about).

As for myself, besides the U.S. I've been in Canada, the Bahamas (I think they're an independent country???), and Greece.

USA (born and lived all my life, visited every state except for Alaska and Hawaii), as well as Mexico (drinking in college) and Canada (vacation in Montana strayed north for a day).

Born in Tennessee (Knoxville), raised in Colorado (Denver), finished high school and some college in Arizona(Phoenix then Tucson), currently living in Connecticut (Greenwich area). Until I get antsy and move again... thinking California or maybe Illinois, or Florida.

Decision to move from AZ to CT was made in about 10 seconds. I am a nomad... should have been in the military ;)

It does for me also:

The UK (England, Ireland, Scotland etc) is not the center of the universe, but you all are confident enough to still think so. What is the point of your royal family again, other than hording the wealth of their inbred ancestors? I see Imperialism worked out well for you. You frickin people caused so much of the current problems in the world because you _had_ to spread your archaic christian values upon the world, telling the Indians and the Arabs and countless other cultures how wrong they had been to pray to their god(s). You idiots drew the lines in the sand, leading to constant wars (Iran-Iraq, India-Pakistan etc) that the UN has to try to clean up, but can't. So who foots the bill? That's right, the USA does. We allow you to participate, simply as a token gesture. What was once the puppeteer is now the puppet. Your great country was whipped by a bunch of farmers 220+ years ago, and never recovered. 60 years ago the USA had to come to the rescue of the almight UK. Your country hasn't been relevant in ages. Your power can only be measured against the other fallen powers of the world. Soon, the communists will be more significant than you. Eventually, your old subjects will flex their muscles as we once did, and we will probably be called on again to save your "great" country. Serioulsy, if China and India decide to wipe your sorry country of the face of this planet, what can you do about it? Not much.

Ummm...John Graves Simcoe, the Lieutenant Governor of Upper Canada from 1791-96 (born in England), named London, Ontario. It's no Canadian's fault. Naming cities in the New World "New...something" is quite common.

I can relate to the, "Do you know so and so" beef, though. Drives me nuts. And I think it's pretty brutal for someone to expect others to know London, Ontario. I mean, it IS a pretty big city for Canada- population about 350,000- but still. London is London, England. The other one is not known the world over. (Although I heard it's quite nice.)

And the U.S. is not a colonial power???? I should know, I was BORN in a U.S. colony. Are you aware that we owned the Phillipines for about 20 years after the Spanish-American war? And that we killed about 200,000 Filipinos when they rose up against the American colonizers?

Oh, and yeah, you're right, we didn't try that hard to spread Christianity among the "savages" (Native Americans) we encountered. Noooo, instead we tried to KILL THEM ALL, and what few were left we put into concentration camps in the desert.

And as far as coming to Western Europe's rescue, we have this neat strategy of waiting 'till both sides are at war for several years, their armies thoroughly decimated, so we can ride in fresh on a white horse and "save" the day.

So get off your freakin' high horse, you're giving us Americans a bad name with your very stereotypical and predictable antics.

I myself have been to, in alphabetical order: Australia, Belgium, Canada, the Czech Republic, Denmark, France, Germany, Hong Kong S.A.R., Ireland, Luxemburg, the Netherlands, Singapore, the UK and the US. (I have travelled through Poland as well, but I didn't leave the car)

By the way, we left our colonial traces as well (I'm not proud of that). But, fortunately, the people in the former Dutch colonies were smart enough to make up their own geographical names :)

Where do you think we learned our tactics from?

As to your Western European war problems, either you want our help or not. You whine and bitch when we do something, and whine and bitch when we sit on the sidelines trying to let you resolve your own conflicts.

Remember, almost every major war is based on only two things; religion and land. As the US becomes less and less religious, we will become involved in fewer conflicts.

Send the troops abroad home. Let them defend our own country. Spend the extra money saved from military conflicts on fixing our own problems. Nuke the cr@p out of anyone that tries to attack us, militarily or otherwise. Drill Alaska for oil until fossil fuels are no longer needed. Recycle properly. Let everyone solve their own damn problems. We are not the police force of the world. The UN is.

Don't know if that is true, but this is what I had heard about the naming of Oregon:
>Oregon is a French cartographer's misspelling
>for Wisconsin (i.e: handwritten "Ouisconsin" looks like
>"OuraGon sin"), and "Wisconsin" originally described the whole
>unexplored northwest territory.

This could be a folk etymology or a real one; I don't know for sure.

I myself have been to, in alphabetical order: Australia, Belgium, Canada, the Czech Republic, Denmark, France, Germany, Hong Kong S.A.R., Ireland, Luxemburg, the Netherlands, Singapore, the UK and the US. (

Much of the reason that people born in the U.S don't go to many countries can be traced to three things, I think:

1. We can go to Canada or Mexico easily. Everything else costs lots of money and/or time.
2. The U.S. is kinda *BIG*, going from NYC to Chicago is like going across several European countries (in terms of distance). And while the cultures of each European country are more diverse, the sub-cultures and regional differences in the U.S. provide a lot of variation.
3. We are very U.S.-centric (ethno-centric, if you prefer). That's just the truth.

Many cultures are coming here, which provides more diversity (actually, I live in Venezuela, but have spent all but 2 years in the U.S.). It's not the same as visiting other countries, but it's the way things are.

A final thought: it's probable the fear of terrorism has entered into the equation the last few years, meaning people are less willing to cross borders.

Personally, I have lived in 3 countries (U.S., Costa Rica and now Venezuela) and have visited 6 others, for whatever that's worth to any of you.

:-)

PEACE.

Other than the USofA where I live, several visits to Canada: BC and Ontario, mostly, and only for vacations. Prefer BC, can strongly recommend Banff Springs Motel, and driving backroads between Vancouver, Kamloops, Lake Louise and Banff.

Sorry to bring this back but come on.Damn, are all Canadians that stupid to think everyone knows there is 'another' London? Gawd, that's lame!

Yes, yes we are. Well if you actually looked at a map maybe you wouldn't be so ugly. London Ont, does have a international airport so it is kinda important and southern Ontario is very populated even by U.S. standards. You don't even know what the Canadians said. Why do people have to get mad at everything, whats wrong?

Just the U.S. and Canada for me hopefully more soon.

I'm with Arn, I'm really surpried how well travelled most everyone is. The only region that seems lacking in people's lists is Mid & South East Asia.

Ok, my list just to help me remind my self too...
England, Scotland, Wales, Ireland (Republic of...), France, Holland, Belgium, Germany, Switzerland, Austria, Italy, Serbia, Croatia, Spain, hmmm....Australia, Singapore, Thailand, HongKong(China).

Like you American's, I think Australia is big enough to warrent counting as 3 or 4 countries ;).

PEPSI-Land is wonderful.
The inhabitants, whoppers and burritos are very friendly.
I leave it to you to figure out who are the males and who are the females :D
Entry is easy, but some of us leave with less money and more weight around our collective waists.
The national symbol is two crossed french fries, with a puddle of catsup underneath.
The language is not hard to learn but it can only be spoken with your mouth full.

What I find interesting is that quite a lot of Americans in this forum have lived in various parts of their country, which is not really something a lot of Europeans do. Most people really stay in their own area for most of their lives, even in such a small country as The Netherlands.

Well if this thread is anything like the original then you have a few people not only couting the countries they had an hour layove in while flying but you are getting people also that are couting coutries they just flew over.

I'm not saying all these people are that way but I bet there's at least one or two.

Anyone in Europe has an inherent advantage because crossing country borders is like hopping states for us. Its a lot closer. Everybody in the US either can go to Mexico or Canada by car, only other place you have to fly. I've got 6 countries under my belt. Only been to London and Amsterdam in Europe though.... oh look at that the two big hubs.... :D.

If I ever actually visit Europe that number will quickly jump to +10. I'll do Spain, France, Italy, Germany. Bam! 10.

Also, does Quebec count as a separate country? Technically its a country in a country. :p

You cannot become a citizen of the UAE, even if you have a child in that country it assumes the nationality of its parents. Not sure about what happens if a foreigner marries a local.

I don't know about kicking their own citizens out but I know for sure if you are a foreigner and are unemployed, you have to leave but thats common policy with all governments regarding expats.

As to what the UAE government does with their money, is a question you have to ask any government. At least in the UAE you can see progress in terms of first class roads, public transport etc.

I don't know about kicking their own citizens out but I know for sure if you are a foreigner and are unemployed, you have to leave but thats common policy with all governments regarding expats.

Duff-Man says....not that many actually, though there are so many I do *want* to visit when time permits....so far:
Canada
USA
England
France
Germany
Switzerland
Holland
Austria
Russia

The problem I always have is the desire to go visit the people I know and the friends I have made...so I seem to end up in Switzerland whenever I travel, and now having a few friends in Moscow I want to go back there again too....I need to balance taking in some new things along with not forgetting the familiar....oh yeah!

LOL. Someone's obviously never been to Britain :D

Or the US.

I notice only a couple of people mentioned countries in South America (both Venezeula, I think), and one guy stopped at an airport in Brazil.

I think it's pretty easy for 13-year-old brits with rich parents to travel a lot. My uncle went on a trip to Europe a while back and visited like 14 countries in 7 days. At the very least, US states should count as 1 country each, or the EU should only count as 1. :-)

It costs about US$3,000 to fly my family to Brazil, and that's only counting airfare. And since all my relatives are either in the US or Brazil, those are the only countries I've been to, though I've been to Brazil 8 times. I've got more important things to do, like buying a house this year, and we need to get a minivan. Plus I'm paying about US$30,000 a year at USC. Not a lot of money left to travel.

Well, and we went on a cruise to Mexico; but we only stayed a few hours and got back on the boat. Even for people from Brazil, Mexico was not pleasant. Cruises are a great vacation deal though. In high school, a lot of my friends would drive the 1.5 hours to Tijuana for the weekend for booze and hookers, but I never went. In college, most of the weekenders were to Vegas.

How much can you really learn about a country on a week vacation? I lived in Brazil for about 2.5 years altogether, and I only scratched the surface. I've seen more of Brazil than most Brazilians though. Like someone said about people in the UK staying in one place their whole lives, most Brazilians are like that as well. But like the US, Brazil is an enormous country where traveling to another state is like traveling to a different country in Europe.

So, in summary:

North America:
USA
Utah (15 years)
Nevada
California (16 years)
Arizona
Idaho
Wyoming
Colorado
Georgia
Illinois
New York
New Jersey
Mexico
Baja California (about 4 hours)

South America:
Brazil
Sao Paulo (1.5 years)
Parana (2 months)
Mato Grosso do Sul (6 months)
Rio de Janeiro (1 week)

In spite of the impressive number, qualitatively, it seems fairly tame compared to some of your trips (although I have some wild stories about East Berlin). I hope to get to Japan, Australia, and Kenya. And between you and me, the Caribbean countries mentioned were on cruises, which seems unfair to count.

Prior to last summer, the only other country I had visited (as opposed to passing through an airport on the way to said country) was India. Last summer, I visited India, Ghana, UAE, and the UK, which, on top of the US, makes five. I'm certain I'll visit more very soon. I need to go back to Ghana, and will probably venture across the border this time; I am planning to go to Israel with a friend; and am thinking about a trip through Europe that will add a whole lot of countries to the above list. Oh, and I have lived for over half my life painfully close to Canada and still haven't gone. I guess I should...

Europeans are almost always going to have visited more countries just because there are so many small countries in Europe and only 3 big ones in North America.

I consider the UK to be one country, otherwise I might start counting the German Bundesländer, American states etc as well, hell even my tiny Belgium is a (very messy) federal state.

I would like to travel to France and be able to speak to a Frenchman like a Frenchman. And driving CA1 from S.F to L.A

I can recommend both experiences. I don't know that I necessarily speak like a Frenchmen, but the French love it when you make the effort and speak their language. Some of my fondest memories are from the time I lived in France, especially the incredible hospitality of the French (you'll rarely hear this from an American unless they have actually lived in this country).

I was born and raised in California and so I highly recommend driving CA 1 (better known in California as Pacific Coast Highway or PCH). I had family south of LA and in San Francisco when I was in school in Santa Barbara, so I know the drive well. I hope you get the opportunity to make this beautiful drive!

The grass is always greener, since I'd love to view the Norwegian fjords from a ship!

If Hawai= Hawaii, then that doesn't count as a country unless you come from the Sarah Palin School for Geographie™.

Other than my homeland, 22 countries.

Passed through airports in a couple more countries, but that doesn't count. These days I never fly to other countries via US airports, since they introduced 10 digit fingerprinting, etc. My own government doesn't have that information, so I'll be damned if I'm giving it to one who treats all visitors like criminals.

It's a fun experience (French). Of course, it helps if you can speak better french than just the obvious and how to order food.

Only two for me, Mexico and United States. When I was a kid we were on our way to Canada but the snow turned us around as there was going to be massive blizzards. I would love to travel more and perhaps when I get the money I will visit my amateur radio operator friend in Germany.

Every state in the continental US, all the provinces of Canada accept The two terriories and Newfoundland, Jamaica, Bahamas, Tortola, St. Martins, Cuba, Mexico, The Caymans, Germany, Ireland, The Netherlands, England, France, Spain, Belgium, Italy, Sicily, Yugoslavia, Serbia, Hungary, Czechoslovakia, Andorra, Switzerland, and Austria.

This has nothing to do with my Mac, but it's a nice way to introduce myself as this is my first post here. I'd like to be able to get around on my Mac as much as I have with my backpack (a Northface "Rucksack", purchased in 1976)

Don't have much money to burn here, so I have only been to 1 my lovely second country of Jamaica.

Hope to visit as many stable countries of Africa soon, and can't wait to climb to the top of the Pyramids of Giza.

Then walk the Great Wall, then lastly see the northern or southern lights with my own eyes.

I am not too thrilled about much after that, but I can't pass up any opportunity to trek.

I realize you kidding but I never understood why so many Americans feel like they have to say something like this every time they mention Canada, it's like a compulsion. I'm not trying to get on your case but even growing up in the States I never got it.

I guess maybe it's because it's the country they know best? People all over the world make jokes about neighbouring countries.
Here in belgium we always make jokes about the "greedy" Dutch, and the Dutch and French make jokes about the "stupid" Belgians. I suppose it's the same in North-America.

I guess to give this poll a Mac spin, these are the countries I've used my IPhone in in the past 20 months or so:

Spain, Italy, Germany, France, UK, Scotland, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Israel.

Having had great trouble prior ro this with Verizon, I think one of the best features of the iPhone is how it is very much an international phone. The caveat is the price of usage and the solution is to find a wi-fi environment to use the iPhone.
