View Full Version : What local bands of yours hit the big time?

Mine are Flaw (also spinoff band Five Bolt Main) and Nappy Roots.
That's all I can think of right now. Those two though are the big ones. Don't listen to Nappy Roots much, but Flaw and Five Bolt Main kick ass. Just all out great vocals, too bad they split. :( :(
I'm interested in hearing about small town bands and not you cheaters in Los Angeles and New York City. You have too many to choose from.

bobdude, you're from louisville--you've gotta count my morning jacket! i guess it depends on your definition of bigtime, but they are unquestionably awesome, and they're signed to a label (ATO) that's distributed by a major (BMG/RCA).
from my hometown (and surrounding area (yeah, i'm counting omaha)), all i have is matthew sweet and the saddle creek gang--bright eyes, cursive, the faint, et al. oh, and zager & evans, makers of the glorious one-hit wonder, "in the year of 2525". it pretty much changed music forever. or for the 3 minutes or so during which it was played.

To be pedantic, I believe it's 'In The Year 2525'. And it's a great song.

Madison Rose. You haven't heard of them yet, but they will be on VH1 by the end of the summer. The TV show that VH1 shot is being released then to coincide with their album release. They are 3 brothers and their best friend. I went to High School with them.
Check 'em out. http://www.myspace.com/madisonrosemusic

Well, I was 4 when it was released but it was on a compilation my grandparents had, so I've heard it a million times. They were also responsible for making me a big Jim Reeves fan.

Gizmachi, no one here has probably heard of them. They played on Ozzfest, they're signed to a label and their video has been on Mtv.

With an intense level of local pride (hahahaha), I can say that Brett Michaels of Poison, and 2 other band members, went to my high school. In the hair-metal heyday, he would show up at the school in a limo to pick up his younger sister. Power cheeeeeezzzzz.
Also, Live is from this part of Pennsylvania. And, more 80s metal - One of the members of Kix used to cut my hair when I was in middle school. I got free tickets to a show in a high school auditorium two albums before their brief popularity and still have their autographs on a poster and a guitar string package. That's now worth, oh, maybe perhaps, on a good day, nothing. (Taking offers now....)

I went to high school with the singer of Multoc. They're not huge by any means, but their album is available on iTunes.
Also, a friend of mine went to school in Manchester, Michigan. He would go into the boys' room and smoke between classes. As it turns out, the band Brownsville Station went to that same high school, and smoked in that same boys' room. They even wrote a song about it.

I can't actually think of anyone who's hailed from Stockport. Though I do know that Badly Drawn Boy used to rehearse at The Greenhouse rehearsal studios in Stockport (he even wrote a song about it - imaginatively entitled "Stockport").
Regarding where I live now, Madness are the most famous musical sons of Camden Town, just down the road from me.

Well I live in Winnipeg, Manitoba a City of about 600,000 people in the centre of North America, where is gets so cold in the winter that most kids sit in the basement and practice on their instruments rather than brave the outdoors.
One of the lynchpins of music here died last month and a eulogy is available here. http://www.whatsonwinnipeg.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=13946
Some of the musicians from here are Lenny Breau, The Guess Who, BTO, Loreena McKennitt, Neil Young, The Weakerthans, Crash Test Dummies, and many more. It’s nice to live in a place that values music.

I went to high school with members of Linkin Park and System of a Down in Glendale, California. I even remember their performances in our school's talent shows and Battle of the Bands, and I don't think anyone ever expected them to make it big, but their talent and charisma were definitely present. I still remember System of a Down's cover of Smells Like Teen Spririt (circa 1994), I wish I had recorded that, it was amazing.

Are you from lafayette or around the area? I was about to mention that blind melon was from around there. I was in a kindergarden class at McCutcheon HS, and the singer for blind melon was my high school helper lol. true story. I don't live in lafayette now, though. I have also lived close to the homes of John Mellencamp and the virgin millionaires. The virgin millionaires actually went to the same high school as me. you probably haven't heard of them, though, as they are just now starting to hit mainstream with their first record deal. check them out at myspace.com/virginmillionaires. Shannon Hoon (deceased) is from Louisiana. Glen is from Columbus MS, and the other two guys are from twenty miles from here - West Point, MS. I understand the way it happened was that Shannon and the other two got together in L.A., needed a drummer and called Glen. The rest is history.
