View Full Version : Five things that turn you off...

ghall

So, we all have things that turn us off from the opposite sex (or the same sex, if you're "like that"), so I thought it would be interesting if we all were to share our 5 (or more, if you want) biggest things that turn us off. They can be physical traits, personality traits, habits, etc...

Well, since I started this thread, I might as well go first.
Here they are in no particular order:

1. red hair
2. hair dye
3. smoking
4. really loud voice
5. lack of kindness

These things that turn me off :

1. People who do not take care of themselves (i.e. extremely overweight)
2. Excessive drinkers
3. Excessive smoking
4. unintelligent
5. Do not care what goes on around them (i.e. people who don't pay any attention at all to politics etc.)

As TRITE as it may SEEM, I tend to find it DISCONCERTING when I meet a person and DISCOVER that they have a WHOLE LIST of items which they deem UNDESIRABLE and which they declare an inability to see BEYOND.

So MY list of THINGS would be THIS:

1) Having preferences which seem random or arbitrary.
2) Being stuck in their ways with regard to random or arbitrary things.
3) Showing a general unwillingness to accept people who either express different preferences to themselves OR who possess those attributes which they do not like.
4) Fat people.

That is ALL.

Yanno as a female I completely understand the hair dye, however someone once told me that I turned them off because I colored my hair. I devulged the information myself. I dye my hair or color it rather because I have gray and I have had gray since 16. It gets a bit rough when you're a teenager with gray hair. However I also pay someone $150 every 6-8 weeks to do an amazing job...so amazing that no one knows I do this unless they see roots. I don't get the hair dye thing, but to each is own.

My turn offs

1. bad teeth/breath
2. lack of concern for others
3. lack of ability to think for themselves
4. inability to succeed. (I do not mean "poor" I mean driven in life whether they're the best burger flipper ever or just doing what they do best)
5. back hair and too much chest hair. ;)

My 2 ¢:

-Smoker.

-Obsessive about weight. (Bones sticking out all over the place. Can't enjoy a meal without pulling out the calorie counting book. Contantly brags about her low resting pulse, then goes ballistic when she cannot get a parking space near the door. What am I not able to put together here?)

-Engages in Mac Bashing, without ever actually having tried one.

-Arrogant yuppie attitude.

-Excessive drinker. They try to cover this by calling themselves "Weekend warriors", or something.

Stupid question that I'll probably regret asking: Why are so many guys so turned off by tattoos? I find it very sexy. Now, I don't mean I like the "Born to ride" stuff. No thanks on that. I do like some of the designes some ladies have across their lower backs and upper arms.:D As long as the work was done by a pro, in a licensed shop, I'm fine.

I don't have such a wash-list style of preferences, but some things I don't like -

Overuse of Make up. I like natural beauty and don't believe any amount of off-the-shelf make up can (oh dear...) make up for that.

Smokers. It's a no if a girl smokes. I just don't like smokers around me. Same for drug users. Flat out no.

I was about to say drinking... but me and my girlfriend are teetotal, but I'd really love us to get a bit drunk just to see what happens really! So I'll just say excessive drinkers.

An independent thinker, but not in the extreme as they ironically just fall back into the sheep pen of people who want to be independent thinkers.

Smokers. It's a no if a girl smokes. I just don't like smokers around me. Same for drug users. Flat out no.

I take the city bus to and from school every day, so I'm around smokers a lot. I actually have this really weird thing around smokers. When they whip out that cigarette and start puffing away, I start coughing like I'm about to choke to death. It never seems to faze them though. So I just walk away.

Seriously though, it's just sad how ignorant some smokers can be. My uncle smokes, but at least he has the courtesy to not smoke while other people are around.

Sorry, I got a bit off topic there. I could rant on and on, but I wont.

Don't worry. I have very strange eating habits. I don't like to conform to the 3 meals a day, I eat when I'm hungry. It doesn't work well at school when we have a specific time to eat (I think it's called lunch-time   ), but somehow I get by.

You guys who have listed must have pretty close associations with the people that have these nuances. H ate does not develop with passing, mmmm....what does that say
How close do you need? Personally I don't need a "close" rendezvous with the big, hairy, smelly oaf standing arms raised on the train to know that I'm so uninterested that I find the word turn-off not nearly strong enough to describe the experience... it's just close enough.

1) Pubic Hair (shaven poon is ideal, but a groomed vertical hitler stash is ok)
2) Girls that don't wash their butt hole (no chunks please)
3) Genital Warts (condylomata acuminata)
4) Girls with bad gas.
5) Girls that use PCs (or don't like macs). It reflects a character flaw, imho.^ I laughed :o :D

2) Being stuck in their ways with regard to random or arbitrary things.
3) Showing a general unwillingness to accept people who either express different preferences to themselves OR who possess those attributes which they do not like.

Ditto- this is one of the nastiest, most mean-spirited threads I've seen in quite some time. Especially when it comes to people being turned off by inherent traits, such as red hair. How utterly ridiculous. The world is a diverse, colorful place- I suggest some of you go out and enjoy it.

It can be a fine line, acknowledging our prejudices, and being hurtful. Context and presentation are important. I mean, there are certain things that we arbitrarily key in on with others, attraction-wise. And I can see how some people might be curious about other people's turn-ons and turn-offs, and want to communicate them. But, it's fairly likely to be at least slightly hurtfull to people who match those criteria. Part of the problem may be that these lists mix together perceived character and physical flaws, along with matters of preference and taste. That could make people feel like these tastes are a judgement on them. Case in point, with that red hair example, I like dark red hair, but not the orange-red hair. That's a statement about myself, not about anyone with those colors of hair. Although, I'm not sure if that's what others feel.

Anyways, on with the list. Except mine isn't in any order:

A fitness level too different than mine
No direction in life
Not having the specific facial structure that I like
Not knowing about the world, current events, etc.

Similarly to leekohler I don't like when a turn-off mentioned is an inborn trait, especially "fat/skinny people" without any qualifier such as "does not make an effort to better themselves". Can't really do anything about genetic factors you know.

That said, here's an unordered, incomplete list.

- Excessiveness. "Too much ...".
- Narrow-mindedness.
- Drinkers/smokers without consideration for others.
- Gossips and people who don't know how to keep their mouth shut.
- Strong odors good or bad. (leeway if they're losing weight. Ketones stink.)

1. Poor hygeine.

2. Lack of confidence. If you dont believe in yourself, why should I?

3. Racist, sexist, elitist belief systems.

4. Substance abuse whether it be drugs, alcohol, or food.

5. Republicanism.

I'm more swayed by personality traits than physical appearances. Smoking and drug use are things that I find extremely unattractive. I like people to be at least slightly intelligent as well, and to take pride in themselves: You're going to find it hard to find someone who thinks you're attractive, if even you don't believe you are.

Physical traits can be so easily forgotten when you meet somebody with a good personality. I'd always been a brown hair person until I met my girlfriend. http://att.macrumors.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=66486&d=1169208687

It's stupid to rule someone out based on something as small as the colour of their hair. At least talk to them, and feel free to rule them out if they turn out to be a complete idiot.

I think there's a difference between ruling someone out as a friend because of a character / physical trait and being attracted to them... in fact many of my closest friends have a characteristic that I listed as a turn off. They're still my best friends; people who I'd do anything for, but that's different then being physically / emotionally attracted to them.

For example, on my list I had overly religious people. This certainly applies to some of my friends... being around them has shown me that there's no way I could live with someone like that for the rest of my life.

The physical things are a little different. I can see how it might potentially be hurtful, but these are a list of things that we aren't attracted to. Just because I'm not attracted to you doesn't mean you should be hurt. I'm certainly thinner and smaller then average... a number of people on this thread have listed thinness as a turnoff but that really doesn't bother me.

What a fun thread!

In girls:

1) Overweight (I admitted my shallowness in this nature to my very skinny girlfriend, despite me being a bit fatso! :P) (this is trumped if she gains weight while giving me children someday (see #5))
2) Liberal politics
3) Doesn't plan for the future. By this I mean, a girl who wants a man to take care of her. While that's ok to some extent, she should educate herself and remain marketable to the work-force in case said provider should die or something.
#4) Not a Christian!
#5) Not open to having a family someday.

Why not?

I'd rather somebody with an open mind, who will look into anything, rather than somebody who devotes themself to a single train of thought. Whatever their choice, they should at least have a reason. I'm not religious at all, but I find it all quite fascinating, so I read about different religions quite a lot.

1. Party Lover (I do not particularly enjoy being drug to parties, bars, clubs or most any social gathering involving mass intoxication, sweat, filth and noise)
2. Dog Lover (Dogs are okay providing they don't shed, jump, nuzzle, lick, bite, whine, scratch at door, bark, beg, make business in house, and are bathed often)
3. Politically Obsessive (I could care less, usually the angriest people I know always listen to political radio shows and constantly watch the News, I use to be one and thankfully broke that bad habit years ago.)
4. Body Hair (Anything other than eyebrows, eyelashes and the hair on top of the head is disconcerting)
5. Untidy (Messy, hair on sink/tub/floor etc, filthy home/room)

I know what you're saying, but being one who has sampled many "wares" so to speak, I would say that a lot of these turnoffs are superficial and based on inexperience. ;) I've found that there are many body types and "looks" I enjoyed that I didn't think I would until I tried. I think everyone has their pluses and minuses, but I find a vast range of body types, hair color and such very attractive. It depends on the person.

But then again, I can be a bit of a whore. :)

In my wares sampling experiences, I have found an appreciation for some people that I might not have really considered otherwise. But it's still simultaneously reinforced my desire to be with someone who matches me more. But I'm weirdly complicated like that :)

MarkCollette

You know, I bet smoking wouldn't be getting banned everywhere if smokers had done one single damned thing to be more considerate, themselves.

Like, for example:

Not leaving cigarette butts everywhere. Who else litters that much?!
Used those ash-trays that suck the smoke in. Hell, a lot of the time smokers don't seem to mind ashing on the floor.
Blowing away, instead of right into everyone.
When sitting, holding cigarettes away, or at least more at waist level, instead of right at eye level.

And, on a different topic, people with bad breath... I keep a tooth brush and tooth paste at work. How hard is it to brush your teeth after lunch, or at least after the 1378th cup of coffee? Or if that's too hard, at least some mouth wash?

Although, I should probably defend guys who don't shave everyday. I use sensitive shave gel and try to be careful, but I just can not shave my neck every day, or else my neck looks horribly mutilated. Once every 3 days is about the best compromise. Although, I do shave the mustache and cheek areas every day.

And what's with people who hate being in crowded places. It's not like they're going to attack or something. I mean, I can understand prefering intimate small groups, or hating having to slowly push through a dense unmoving crowd. But come on. I like the eye candy of large crowds, but I wouldn't hate being in a small group.

hm hard to choose especially since body traits would very likely be too easy and going very likely too much into genetic stuff we can't change like when we loose hair, how robust our teeth are etc.

so this is about girls mostly:
- being overly religious or worse believing esoteric.. and yeah thinking that astrology is science is included in that: at 4:30 AM while having a blast in the clubs i don't want to hear about how scorpions can go together with lions etc.
-perfume candles: just don't ... unless you want to kill me which on the other side is another turn off ...
-blindly following the latest trend in fashion without taking a step back and actually looking at it _once_: like pushing the end of trousers into the high boots, knowing that this even looks too stupid for the army should have got you thinking
- being vegetarian because of the "poor animals suffering" and letting everybody know about it while you are wearing leather shoes, leather winter jacket, a leather hand bag and a watch bound to your arm by leather might not be your brightest idea
- 5th is difficult because there is very likely too much to leave out: smoking is a candidate but i'm not that enthusiastic on certain hip-hop culture things either, another thing would be _tribal_ tattoos especially on the lower-back or too much piercings

Here are "some" of my turn-offs.
1. lack of critical thinking (this includes: people who voted for George W Bush twice---PC way to say about stupid people
2. body oder/dirty hands/being fat
3. Self righteous people (religion fanatics, Christian fundamentalist, or any belief which judges other people based on their own belief).
4. Incompetent and lazy people (I hope Darwinism prevail on them)
5. People who do not respect other people's personal properties (I cannot get nicer car because someone will key, scratch or dent it).

Doesn't your preference <4> demonstrate that you yourself possess attributes of <1>, <2> and <3>?

Edit: Nothing personal, just found it a little bit curious...

Mark, most smokers I know have done as you've requested or more, especially me. The fact of the matter is this- you don't like it, so any slip-up that happens gets magnified 100 times in your mind and the minds of other non-smokers. That's all I'm going to say about it. This subject is tired.

Pot, meet kettle...

I hadn't realised honest expressions of opinion meant judgement of others, I have never personally judged anyone in this forum. I've expressed my personal opinions about some topics of discussion but have not sort to vilify, degrade or judge anyone. Just because someone doesn't agree with my personal beliefs and opinions doesn't cause for judgement.

Smoking (by far the biggest turn off ever)
Blatant disregard for others
