Good Sound Editing Tool

Anybody know a good Mac OS X sound editing tool? Here are the requirements:

1) Should be able to handle a vast majority of sound formats, including AIFC (compressed AIFF) sound files -- should preferably be based on QuickTime, so it can use any format that QT can handle

2) Should be able to do regular editing stuff -- delete portions of the sound file, skip to different parts of the sound file, pause/resume playback, etc.

3) Should be Mac OS X native

4) should be easy to use

5) should be shareware so I can try out a demo that actually saves files

The closest I've come is Amadeus (http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/5933), but it doesn't satisfy requirement #4 because of the annoying behavior where if you delete any portion of a sound file, the playback cursor resets to the beginning and you can't change it unless you start playback and then pause it.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Sound Studio is a good app. I liked it better than Amadeaus, just seemed more fluid, etc. It is a little pricy at 50 bucks, but the demo is full-featured, but expires.

AWESOME. That application is EXACTLY what I was looking for, and I can turn off the following of the playback cursor. PERFECT!

i havent tried SPARK ME, but i know that audacity is a pretty decent audio editor. anyone compared the two? audacity is totally free, i believe it is open source? and OS X native.

The instant you see the word Audacity on your screen, you should be thinking a second word: BURN!!

I tried Audacity on ALL THREE of my computers:

My iMac 233 with the latest version of OS 9, using the OS 9 version of Audacity.

My iBook with the non-beta version of Audacity and my Cube with the non-beta version (version 1.0), both using the latest version of OS X at the time.

There is all but no help with Spark ME. In words suitable for a total audio klutz, can anyone tell me how to save the hiss-free rendition I get after I have adjusted the dials in the SparkOneBand plug-in? The AIFF files I am playing on iTunes dont sound adjusted at all, so I am assuming I am missing a stage and saving the original only. Thanks.
