iMac wireless w/ pc wireless

i'm on the verge of getting an iMac - 20in definate!!! one thing is just bugging me;
it has wireless connectivity.. if i purchase a wireless pci card for my windows pc will they talk without a roter??

All i need is the internet on both and filesharing. cable is an option but getting the cable from one side of the house to the other... well you know!😉

there is no mac wireless and pc wireless. Wireless is a universal standard, so everything should 'play nice'

nah im saying if i have a wireless mac and a wireless pc.. sorry worded it wrong... will it work without a router is my question

Sounds like you are connected to the internet on one pc and it shares its connection with other pcs wirelessly. No matter what, if a pc can do it then an iMac can do it too...

I don't believe either computer can share the internet with the other wirelessly. You would still need a router.
 
Friend of mine has a wireless internet USB stick (is that the same kind of thing as mobile phones which have the internet use? I think so). Currently the USB wireless modem is in her iMac. I tried using the Internet Sharing of Mac OS X to make a local wireless network over which the wireless internet connection could be shared with her PC laptop.

I couldn't get this working despite trying all sorts of things. The PC WinXP netbook just couldn't seem to connect to the iMac's (airport) network.

Don't know why.

Anyway, the point is that in principle an internet connection should be able to be shared, though it doesn't always work.

Actually, Windows has the "Internet Connection Sharing" for this very reason, and it appeared as a regular feature back in Windows XP. Lots of wireless chipsets support operating in a peer-to-peer or mesh mode. I've never used it, but it absolutely exists and has since at least 802.11b (if not 802.11a).
