Well it's another Wii Shop Channel Monday so I figured I'd check what new additions we got. To my surprise the channel now has Mario Kart 64 and Comix Zone! I forget the other titles, but these two stuck out at me. MK64 is an instant classic (already downloaded it) and Comix Zone... anyone remember this game? I used to play it all the time on Sega Channel (ahh, memories). It's 800 Wii Points and I'm down to 200 already, so that one's going to have to wait a little.
So is anyone buying any of the new titles? MK64 is 1,000 points, by the way.

Can I purchase the points on the channel with a credit card or do I need to go to Target/Gamestop and buy them?

One of the other titles was Contra 3 which is the best of the Contra series IMO. Unfortunately, we already have tons of shooters and Gunstar Heroes so it may not sell as well as it might have otherwise...

Nintendo has to strike a deal with Microsoft before it can offer Goldeneye, but if I remember correctly, Reggie was hinting at the possibility....eventually.
I don't think anybody has an adapter to allow the N64 controller to be plugged in. You do know that a Gamecube controller will work, right?

Sega Channel was way ahead of its time. Nowadays, it would be called something like "on-demand gaming" and be hot sh*t.
But yeah, woah, Comix Zone! This is so cool. I absolutely love this game.

All this talk of GoldenEye forced me to plug in my N64 again and play it. :D
I have one of my N64 controllers in my hand and compared to the Wii's Classic Controller, it's pooooo... :o
I just realized the middle of the N64 controller is the Nunchucks granddaddy. :)
I don't know for certain, but I would assume Nintendo still holds some rights on GoldenEye 64, since they were the publisher and they owned almost half of Rare at that time.
Nintendo was smart to sell their share of Rare to MS. It was crumbling at that time and now it has lost its core essence;

 Typical. Rare release an excellent original game in the form of Viva Pinata, and people go eh? and dont buy it.
The same people then belittle the fact orginallity is dead.

Original? A souped up Animal Crossing more like (which is a close cousin of Harvest Moon). It has certain new elements but the core game is AC.
Rare have been flagging. I borrowed Majoras Mask and Conkers Bad Fur Day several years ago, I wept for both Rare and Nintendo. Thankfully Nintendo learnt from that and progressed. Next big outing for Rare was Starfox Adventures... then Perfect Dark Zero.
:( gone are the days of Jet Force Gemini, Goldeneye and Donkey Kong Country.

Huh. Wikipedia lists Nintendo EAD as the developers of Majora's Mask, not Rare. That said, I thought Majora's Mask was a solid game, and it added some nice variety into the Zelda series (compared to OoT, which I think of as pretty vanilla - not bland, but not as flavorful). How could you not like racing around in goron bowling ball form trying to ram a giant bull?
As for Conker's Bad Fur Day, it had some serious flaws, but it also had its moments. But after that, I agree, Rare pretty much lost all redeeming qualities, and became little more than a drain on Nintendo. I wanted to like Starfox Adventures, but after I checked out the demo in the store, it just didn't seem worth playing.

I downloaded Mario Kart 64 on Friday when it was released here in Australia and the first thing that struck me was Wow it's broken! No saved lap times, no ghosts, no record of the tracks you've actually completed! BETTER LUCK NEXT TIME NINTENDO!

I never said they were made by the same company, of course they weren't! I'm just saying I borrowed both games at the same time and didn't like either, but where one company saw how to improve the other didn't.
I wasn't a fan of MM. The world was huge, varied, lovely. But I felt the pressure from the time limit constantly. An updated version on the DS would be very cool and I'd give that a try any day.

Again this goes back to what MRU said. And jimmi, this isn't against you at all so don't take it that way, but MRU, you're right. We (the general public) complain at the lack of innovation, and the fear that a company has in departing from a winning formula. LTTP and OOT really defined the formula for the Zelda series, and WW & TP followed. They were all great games in my opinion, but when we look at what Nintendo tried to do with MM, the majority of the Zelda fans turn their noses at the different style. I thought it was great, though I didn't get to play all of it... maybe when it hits the VC I'll buy it. :)
Anyway, just an observation.
(and yeah, I felt the time constraint in MM was a little too constraining)

Most game publishers are good at killing originality and then stating it's not an important factor for sales, then limit the developers from putting in that little extra that can sometimes make a game shine. Unfortunately sales often back this up. When Nintendo sold its share of Rare to MS, Rare wasn't performing and hadn't for some time. So maybe a shake up is what Rare needed to get it out of its rut.
Lots of good games/companies get squashed. You can blame it on all of the publishers tailoring to the ever so present and persistent myth of the hardcore-gamer, so the kids that prefer games like GoW over a Viva Pinata or Psychonauts, because they deem one genre as being immature.
I certainly hope that Chris and Tim will move to a company like Retro Studios, or form a new one of that calibre.

Good read. Thanks for the link. I agree with a lot of what the guy was saying. They've taken a formula and used it a lot. It's been a good formula while it's lasted, but now it may be time to move on. I'd really like to see Link move into an adventure mode somewhat like Metroid Prime or Final Fantasy. Keep from going into 3 dungeons, getting X, finding out X doesn't work only to play 5 more dungeons to get Y. Fight the boss in 3 forms, 3 hits each and roll credits. Rather than that, Link is free to run around in Hyrule and Hyrule itself essentially is one giant dungeon. You can still have the different zones with the different races, but let it progress somewhat like Metroid Prime.
Also, one thing I think that is missing in the series is a lot of the back details. Yeah, we know that Link is an ancestor to the Hero of Time and Zelda is the name given to all princesses, and Ganon is Ganon. But what happens in between. We get so little and are expected to draw conclusions. TP helps a little bit, but not much.... come on Nintendo, throw us a frigging bone.

That guy is clueless when it comes to what Zelda is about and has a limited scope of things. He's a twit IMO. If I want to play a game like Oblivion or KOTOR, or any of the button-tapping simulators that Square offers, I have those options. Zelda is something completely different, it's more about action than dialogue. It's an action adventure game, not an RPG. It's a formula we are all familiiar with and like to revisit every so many years, because it's fun.
It's obvious this tard hasn't played a graphic adventure or some of the better RPGs from the DOS days... The type of dialogue he's describing has been around since the eighties, but yet he assumes it's something new and makes the ninties reference about Zelda's dialogue. Oblivion an KOTOR are only borrowing on what has already been established. This guy enjoys the full motion cut scenes and stories in FF. If I wanted to watch a video game and not play it, then I would buy some of the later fasion shows that Square masqueraded as RPGs. I find it ironic that most consider FF4 as a game that has a great story. I liked the game, but its story was uber-cheese IMO.
There was a good thread earlier about what we would like to see in a newer Zelda adventure. This guy would benefit from reading it, since he really didn't bring anything new to the plate and only showed his limited undsertanding of what Zelda is all about. Change is often a good thing, but then again, why break what's not necessarily broken.
Is there a way to turn off those annoying popup up MS live vomit bubbles?

I agree fullheartedly. Twilight Princess was friggin spectacular, but it felt like the final Xmas special of The Office. Something that had run its time going out on an amazing bang.
I honestly think the next couple of Zelda games are going to be substantially different, with a "traditional" styled game coming out late in the Wii2's life.
Zelda mixed with Oblivion could be good, I just couldn't play too much of Oblivion with it's lack of personality, charm or story. Sorta felt a little too open really. But if you fixed the problems of Zelda (stale) and Oblivion, you have the next logical step.
But will the next game be a logical step? WindWaker anyone?

...
I was merely pointing out that the debate in this thread seemed to be headed down that same path...
He does have a valid point in TP being more forced linearity than some of the past Zeldas. In LttP if you go in and get the big chest out of each dungeon you can then go and get the pendants/crystals in whatever order you please, and the world is much more open than what I've seen so far in TP. I don't necessarily mind the repetitive story but the land bubbles connected by narrow paths seems a bit constricting in it's scope. Mind you FF X has some of the same issues.
The lack of voice acting isn't a deal breaker but the TP "Heeeeyyy!" and other garbled voices to get your attention is driving me a bit nuts since it sounds, to me, like what some juveniles do to mock the mentally challenged...
Back on topic:
Any word on what's headed to the VC for next week? or this coming weekend across the pond?

Sorry, wasn't ranting towards you. :)
Banjo and Kazooi is a good example to why voice acting isn't always needed. I personally like the old school games, where as all you heard was the text bleeping away. I'm into Zelda for the fun of exploration and adventuring, not listening/reading while others ramble like I do here online. :o I play games like Oblivion and its stiff controls when I'm in the mood for that sort of stuff.
I'm going to assume a true Wii version will allow much larger worlds and transitions. TP is limited by the Cube. The GC's 24 megs of vram, which the GC's disc can't feed fast enough was its biggest constraint. I'm OK with a smaller areas appearing first, instead of seeing a loading screen for each new section. This guy apparently didn't take that into account when he compared TP to Obvlian on this point.
Anyway, the guy who wrote that article frustrated me, since he was comparing games of different types and asking why they couldn't be more alike.
I would certainly like some of the extras from LttP, as in more armor and so on. I spent a big part of my time in OoT getting the big sword and used it instead of the master sword, since it was better. I don't know if TP offers anything like this, but these things have really made past Zelda games for me.
I'm still waiting for Ghouls n' Ghosts to show up on the VC. :( To ramble some more, I played Ultimate Ghost and Ghoblins on the PSP. This was the one game pushing towards a PSP purchase. Anyway, beautiful looking game with unrefined controls. They were too sluggish and slippery. Capcom has successfully ruined a classic platformer.
