The RED iPod nano appeared on the edu page about the time the store went back up after MWSF here. You couldn't click on it and it was gone about an hour later.

Didn't report it, just thought someone stuffed up.

Bloody Kiwis get it though...

Well, it must have a very big picture.... why else would the store be down THIS long.

C'mon Apple, let us in to see the goodies - yet I find myself braced for a big dissapointment!

That'd be right....the update takes about a minute, then they just sit around for a while letting people stew on it for a while. I guess its how you build up a bit of free hype without actually doing anything at all!....and that seems to work.

I had to get my mum to buy it in Hong Kong, and literally a few days after it arrived the 8GB model was released. Luckily I was able to send back the 4GB version and pay a little more for the bigger model.

This could the iPod shuffle Beatles Edition:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/tobias-digital/374401824/
That'd be sweet! And they could set it up so you couldn't see which signature you were getting. Then you'd have to buy 6 or 7 to get all four! And they could have a black one as the Pete Best model!
But I'd definately get one. Even though I wouldn't have a use for it.

Yeah but I'm guessing when they add products to the store they upload the new files and then test order every possibility so as to check for bugs. New iLife = new pages for loads of products and lots of configurations that need to be tested through the order process. Of course it doesn't take long to upload pre-designed pages, it just takes a while to test them so that the site is usable once up.

CUPERTINO, Calif., Jan. 30 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Apple(R) today
announced that the world's most wearable digital music player is now available
in five brilliant colors: blue, pink, green, orange and the original silver.
A hit with customers since its initial shipment three months ago, iPod shuffle
is just half a cubic inch in volume, weighs just half an ounce and features a
stunning aluminum design with a built-in clip, making it the most wearable
iPod(R) ever. Based on Apple's pioneering shuffle feature which lets music
fans enjoy a continuous mix of their favorite songs anywhere they go, iPod
shuffle contains one gigabyte of flash memory, holds up to 240 songs and is
available in all five colors for just $79.
"iPod shuffle is the world's most wearable digital music player," said
Greg Joswiak, Apple's vice president of Worldwide iPod Product Marketing.
"Music fans can now choose iPod shuffle in one of five brilliant colors, or
they can buy one of each."
iPod shuffle features up to 12 hours of battery life* and lets users
shuffle their songs to listen to them in a random order or simply flip a
switch to listen to their songs in order, such as when listening to a new
album.
Users connect iPod shuffle to their PC or Mac(R) with the included dock,
and iTunes' innovative AutoFill feature automatically syncs the perfect number
of songs from their music library. Seamless integration with iTunes(R) 7 and
the iTunes Store (www.itunes.com) allows customers to choose from a selection
of over four million songs from the world's most popular digital music store.
With Apple's legendary ease of use, pioneering features such as integrated
podcasting support, iMix playlist sharing, seamless integration with iPod and
groundbreaking personal use rights, the iTunes Store is the best way for PC
and Mac users to legally discover, purchase and download music and video
online.
Pricing & Availability
The new iPod shuffle is available immediately worldwide through the Apple
Store(R) (www.apple.com), Apple's retail stores and Apple Authorized Resellers
for $79 (US). iPod shuffle includes an iPod shuffle dock and earbuds.
iPod shuffle requires a Mac with a USB 2.0 port and Mac OS(R) X version
10.3.9 or later and iTunes 7.0.2 or later; or a Windows PC with a USB 2.0 port
and Windows 2000 (Service Pack 4), Windows XP Home or Professional (Service
Pack 2) and iTunes 7.0.2 or later. Internet access is required and a broadband
connection is recommended.
*Battery life and number of charge cycles vary by use and settings. See
www.apple.com/batteries for more information. Music capacity is based on four
minutes per song and 128-Kbps AAC encoding; actual capacity varies by content.

{shudders}

I still would be very surprised if they go quad yet in the Mac Pros. It would mean them having to give up their 3Ghz machine and as we all know, Apple have been going on about 3Ghz Power Macs for years and years!! Unless Apple have gotten hold of new, unreleased and unanounced 3Ghz Quad Core Xeon parts from Intel that nobody knows of then I'd expect a price drop on the Pros at best. Maybe new nVidia cards but I think that would be pushing it.

Like I said before, the most likely updates imo are iWork '07, iLife '07 and maybe a new iSight at a reduced cost. There may be price drops along the rest of the line and possible Core 2 Duo chips in the Mac Minis but that's all pushing it a bit.

Edit: Meh, colour shuffles. Like I would ever buy a shuffle anyway!!

Current exchange rate doesn't equal what the price should be. You have to take into account expenses in the UK that are out of Apple's control.

Why ??

They could just add an octo as the new high end, and keep the existing ones.

The other manufacturers do this - you get the choice of quad 3 GHz or octo 2.66 GHz.This is how I expect it to be done. Just an added line to the configure page. I also expect the Dual Clovertown motherboard to be different with Stoakley-Seaburg (http://techreport.com/etc/2006q4/clovertown/index.x?pg=1) on board.

And I hope we get a Blu-ray option that won't break the bank like under $500.

Yes our prices include VAT, but there is ALWAYS a discrepacncy in US/UK prices. And always more expensive here.

And was Jerusalem builded here

How many times does this have to be explained? Apple UK itself has to pay more taxes than Apple US. They have to factor in the costs of things like Employer's NIC and the UK Corporation Tax into the prices before VAT. Otherwise they run at a loss or can't meet their own tax bills.

So if you want to scream at anyone for the price discrepancy, start with HM Treasury.

Surely the best indicator is just to see how much of a profit Apple makes off each item after tax. If they make more this side of the pond, then they're ripping us off. If its the same, then we're not being ripped off.

Or is there a flaw in my theory?

Does anyone know the approx. profit on each iPod for example. Some sales guy in Micro Anvika (*spit*) told me they (the reseller) only get a £5-£10 profit on each 8GB Nano sold.

I don't think it's that we get taxed too much. We need taxes in order to fund institutions that are vital to maintaining adequate quality of life for all. I would rather pay a bit more tax and have a free health service than follow the American model.

However, I think our tax bracketing is completely skewed. Middle-income families bear far too much of a tax burden compared to the obscenely wealthy. Any remotely sensible conception of social justice (imo) requires a 50% top bracket rate for the mega-earners, perhaps even higher for the obscenely rich.

Yes, yes. Yesssss! The US does not have to factor in Corporation Tax or Salary Costs because US companies do not pay tax and all the workers are happy to work for free.

Apart from those who forget that the US prices are net of sales tax, the reason for the endless bitching is that the UK prices are frequently substantially more than the VAT differential, and more than can be explained by exchange rate buffering. Apple is not the only company guilty of this, though.

iPod shuffles? do people really buy these pieces of junk? zzzzzzz:mad:

They're really really nice for working out with. I have an iPod and I honestly don't need 20 days worth of music, a screen (you're running after all), an extra armbracelet to put it in etc when I work out. Just load the shuffle up with fast-paced music and off you go.

Same goes for when I'm skiing/snowboarding, where there's really no safe place to put an ordinary iPod since some people have a tendency to fall and slam any surface of the body (at least where pockets are located anyway). The shuffle is likely to survive, and worst case if you land on top of it, it was only $79...

(Although an iPod-shaped bruise would be kinda cool ;)

Apple is not the only company guilty of this, though.

Well, it's not just the tax, but you also have to take into account the minimum wage etc. Like in Norway, where I was earning more per hour working in a fast food restaurant my first month than my bf who had worked in the same library for 5-6 years (not even working for min. wage), you obviously pay more for products in that country.

For instance, the 15.5" MBP w/256 MB graphics card is about USD 2500 + tax (7%) = US$ 2675. However, the same MBP is selling for USD 3650,- inc. 24% tax and using the NOK/USD exchange rate of today. Dell Inspiron 9400 sells for about USD 2600,- in Norway.

Thus, if Apple is going to charge their customers a premium like they do all over the world, it's obvious that it can't be priced the same as the "lesser" Dell.

Another big factor to take into consideration: The exchange rate. The USD has, as far as I know, depreciated slowly against pretty much all the major currencies the last couple of years. Since Apple is an American company, you have to take this into consideration as well.

This latest rumor didn't happen of course, but regardless I think Apple really need to get back on the ball in a business sense. There are lots of things Pros are now waiting for which are holding up sales worldwide for Apple. Our business has a major hardware update every 5 years (like pushing it huh!?), but we are now way over that as we are waiting for apple to move on 3 fronts.

We want to replace our dual processor G4 with an 8 core Macpro, we want a 30" (minimum) HDMI compatible display and a minimum blu ray superdrive, preferably dual format though, i.e. HD DVD capable as well.
By the way I laughed when I saw a recent comment along the lines of "Why on earth would anyone want HDMI-in on a computer display", the guy obviously doesn't own a HD/HDV camera or work in video production!

Until all of the above happens our money remains firmly in our pockets, driving our local apple supplier nuts! We told him in November that we had the cash ready to go. I would suggest there are thousands of Pros around the world in the same boat. Let's go guys!

A quickie question.

1. As far as I know, there is no bigger (hi px density) dispalys that the 30" dells or apples. Apple obviously havent HDMI and neither does dell.
If you have to have input for HD cameras, why dont you use 3rd party lcd/plasma displays for it?

OR,

2. If you shoot HD, why dont you use for example BlackMagic Intesity cards, with wich you could capture "true" HD straight from the camera.
Then use ACDs and reference monitors to supervise and do the correction?

3. And the blue/HD dvd is a lacking problem.. Not that you cant get third party drives at the moment, it is just that is there any programs that support blue/hd dvd writing in OS X atm? The new Toast supposedly is and next update of FCP, but.. ?
